1962 novel by Kurt Vonnegut
POPULARITY
In this episode, the devious, uncanny Spiders examine Mother Night, a solid and thought-provoking novel from the oft-overrated Kurt Vonnegut.
Times are strange, and it's doubtful they'll get any less strange any time soon. So the siblings are looking towards the one and only Kurt Vonnegut for some guidance by reading his unfortunately still so topical classic: Mother Night. We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. URL: Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas
Helen DeWitt's debut novel "The Last Samurai" almost didn't get published, but since then has become a cult classic, and it also made the now infamous NYT 100 Best Books of the 21st Century list.In today's episode we break down the book, which we read for our January book club, and Andy gives us his feelings on finally reading a book written by a woman.Become part of our growing book community!patreon.com/LifeonBooksJoin the Life on Books mailing list to stay up to date on all of our latest book giveaways, projects, and more!https://linktw.in/BRYAnVhBooks mentioned in this episode:The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitthttps://amzn.to/4hsDhI6https://bookshop.org/a/103053/9780811...Galapagos by Kurt Vonneguthttps://amzn.to/4hOqVdhhttps://bookshop.org/a/103053/9780385...Mother Night by Kurt Vonneguthttps://amzn.to/40Lh5CmSlaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonneguthttps://amzn.to/3CEfE0phttps://bookshop.org/a/103053/9780440...Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonneguthttps://amzn.to/41109cihttps://bookshop.org/a/103053/9780385...The Tunnel by William H. The darkest nights of the year have long been the time for celebrations, from Yule and Mother Night, to Christmas and New Year's Eve. But where did these traditions come from? Who started kissing under the mistletoe? Why are trees decorated and brought into homes around this time of year? And how did the Romans bring in the New Year?Today Kate is joined Betwixt the Sheets by Ronald Hutton to find out how these celebrations originated and developed, and just what has stayed the same.Produced by Charlotte Long and Sophie Gee. Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Èstes recently asked the question, "Who is Mother Night and why do we need her now?" Kate and Jeanette explore this question as it relates to liminal spaces, shame, and the essence of sacred sexuality and connection.
So you might remember him as Arnie from CHRISTINE and that's where I first became aware of the terrific talent of one writer/director/actor extraordinaire Keith Gordon. He's been on Director's Club a half dozen times which is truly an honor and a pleasure. We continue a yearly tradition where we check in and take the opportunity to nerd out about the cinema of years past. We go back to talk about a particular decade in film citing some under-seen titles that may have been underappreciated at the time. Several of these you may have heard of, but the reason I enjoy doing this is to hear Keith's thoughts on titles such as SECONDS, POINT BLANK, THE INNOCENTS and many more! There are honorable mentions & this time, we briefly talk about what it was like working with Sheryl Lee on his great Vonnegut adaptation, MOTHER NIGHT. This is a wonderful discussion as always so if you've been a fan of our other talks, I have no doubt you'll enjoy the latest one as well. Check out the previous KG episodes / lists below! What a treat to meet the artist behind more cross-genre iconic licks than I can count. Fellow Bronxite, Eddie Martinez, surrounded by platinum records, without a trace of a New York accent, was fun, whip-smart, thoughtful, articulate, inclusive, with stories to spare. Inspired by the Beatles, Hendrix, and Beck, Eddie started out when his neighbor, Nile Rogers, lead him to his first professional gig with Mother Night. Eddie took us through his time with LaBelle, game-changer, rocker, Nona Hendrix, Blondie, at the height of their heyday, cross-over to jazz with Lenny White and then Stanley Clarke and George Duke, She's The Boss, with Mick Jagger, getting to play with Beck, and at Live Aid, Tina Turner, his years with Robert Palmer, so many gold nuggets there, Addicted to Love to Simply Irresistible, Run DMC (Guitar World ranked Eddie's contribution to Rock Box Number One on its list of The Top Uses of Guitar in Hip Hop, David Lee Roth when he was it, with Crazy From The Heat. We talked his time with Joe Cocker, Lou Reed, meeting John Lennon and Yoko (playing with her), then Ringo, playing with Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, we would've needed hours to get through his complete discography. Eddie's solo album, Akosua, is a mind-blower. The cut, Majestic, with his killer vocals to match his thrilling guitar, is on heavy rotation in my kitchen. The LP is a masterful treat, available on iTunes and Amazon Music. Loved every moment in Eddie's good company. Heartfelt thanks to Carmine Rojas for introducing me to his old, my new, dear friend. Eddie Martinez is a rarity in rock, and in life––brilliantly talented, knowledgeable, sweet, gracious, gentleman. A gem. Host Charity Nebbe discusses "Mother Night" with Vonnegut scholars Jerome Klinkowitz and Suzanne McConnell, as well as first-time Vonnegut reader Caleb Rainey, for a discussion of this timeless modern classic.
First published in 1961, then republished several years later from Iowa City, Kurt Vonnegut’s “Mother Night” explores issues of morality, humanity and individual responsibility in the aftermath of World War II. While the book explores an era of misinformation and mass tragedy decades in the past, the themes feel eerily relevant to the state of affairs in 2021.

Andy goes solo for this episode and talks about remembering people's names, buying dog sweaters online, tiny libraries, Kurt Vonnegut's novel Mother Night, Thanksgiving desserts, and homemade macaroni and cheese.
Emily Edwards, host of Fuckbois of Literature, and I talk about one of Kurt Vonnegut's oft-forgotten early novels, MOTHER NIGHT. Along the way we chat about whether straight male English majors can be trusted, sharing favorite books with our mothers, the endurance of Confederate monuments, and so much more. Oh yeah, this episode gets POLITICAL. Consider yourself warned. As always, spoiler free and lots of fun, despite the dark subject matter of this week's book. HMSG Interview with Keith GordonKeith Gordon is a writer, actor and director. Sue Campbell spends most of her writing time working on Middle Grade novels, which is why listeners might be shocked that the two major story influences in her life are Kurt Vonnegut’s Mother Night and John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany. Together, Abigail and Sue explore the tremendous impact these stories had on Sue’s personal and professional life, from pushing her to question who she is perceived as, who she wants to be, and how to align the two–to the immeasureable power of a fueled and supported imagination. Listen to this episode to explore the dark, complex questions that challenge our identities, and be inspired by what can happen when we set out to become who we want to be with intention and purpose. We're in a werewolf cave with a drunk werewolf and a cursed treasure. Will we be able to tell Lank before he touches it? When will we kill this werewolf jerk? Just what is the deal with this cave, and why did Lank feel weird when he began to approach the statue of Mother Night? What's the dragon skull all about? And perhaps most importantly, will Batthwack and Will write another theme song? #bestfriendsforever #fightingwerewolvestogether Music by AbBowie Cross.

Today’s guest on Tales That Bind Us is Andrew Hathaway, a high school educator, deep-thinker, and avid reader. The focus of this episode is Kurt Vonnegut’s Mother Night which depicts the fictional memoir of an American spy turned Nazi propagandist. We discuss this moral conundrum as well as the human inclination to make bold, unqualified claims, the totalitarian mindset, and many more Vonnegut-esque themes.

Last year around this time, I spoke with the one and only Keith Gordon, actor, writer, director extraordinare. The following is a repost. A second conversation will be recorded soon and I wanted to post this very special episode from Director's Club / Pop Culture Club since the sequel is coming soon in the form of Episode 34. Enjoy! From May 2016: Welcome to a very special bonus episode of Director's Club. These days you can find our guest directing episodes of TV shows like FARGO, DEXTER, THE LEFTOVERS, HOMELAND, MASTERS OF SEX, RECTIFY and so much more. But if you grew up in the 80s like me, you probably recognized the talent on display in a horror film like CHRISTINE or a comedy like BACK TO SCHOOL. What I wholeheartedly recommend are the films directed by the one and only Keith Gordon. I first saw A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, took note of the name of the director, and became a huge fan from that point on when I rented his films in the mid-to-late 90s. I am still a huge fan to this day, and this interview was a really special event for the podcast. And I couldn't have had a more pleasant, engaging, and fascinating discussion with someone I would consider to be a hero. He continues to work hard to this day, and we even talk about possible projects in the works that I hope come into fruition. We also discuss my four favorite films of his going back to his debut adaptation of THE CHOCOLATE WAR, A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, MOTHER NIGHT and my personal favorite, WAKING THE DEAD (image above). For more on Keith, check out his IMDB to see some of his many credits and be sure to rent/stream all of his incredible work. Thank you so much for listening to what I consider to be an interview that I will never forget. IMDB: Keith Gordon PODCAST NETWORK: Now Playing Network
