PopaHALLics #133 "Martha My Dear—NOT!"A new documentary fails to make Martha Stewart sympathetic, in Kate's view. We also discuss season 2 of "The Diplomat" and "Colin from Accounts," a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, and books about therapy, a cult, and a "normal" serial killer. Yikes.Streaming:"Martha," Netflix. This documentary directed by Jay Cutler traces Martha Stewart's rise from working-class roots to pop culture icon, through interviews and Stewart's private archives of diaries, letters, and footage."The Diplomat," Netflix. Season 2 follows the personal and professional aftermath of the ship attack and car bombing. Kate (Keri Russell) and Hal (Rufus Sewell) begin to suspect the Brits are after the wrong suspects."Colin from Accounts," Prime and Paramount +.  The delightful Aussie rom-com returns, with Ash (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall) moving in together but uncertain whether they really want a relationship or just a dog.Books: "Demon Copperhead," by Barbara Kingsolver. This acclaimed novel moves Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield" story to modern Appalachia, casting its eye on the foster system, child labor, the opioid crisis, and other ills."Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed," by Lisa Gottlieb. This "hilarious, thought-provoking" book explores one therapist's search for answers as both clinician and patient when she has a personal crisis. "Normal," by Graeme Cameron. A charming, seemingly ordinary guy happens to be a serial killer who kidnaps young women and holds them captive in a secret basement. As his world threatens to collapse, you may find yourself rooting for him in this darkly funny thriller."Dinner for Vampires: LIfe on a Cult TV Show (While also in an Actual Cult!)," by Bethany Joy Lenz. When the "One Tree Hill" star joined a Bible study group, she had no clue it was associated with a cult.Music: We love Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Know who else does? Paul Anka ("Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "Having My Baby"). Anka's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" swings, baby! Enjoy.

"Feeling like we matter is one of the most defining features of our humanity. When that feeling is present, we thrive. When it is absent, we feel ignored and helpless. Threats to mattering diminish dignity and can cause destruction, as we have witnessed in school shootings over the last few decades. Mattering consists of feeling valued and adding value, to ourselves and others. These two experiences are not only complementary, but highly interdependent."www.cambridgeblog.org/2021/04/the-mattering-effect/During this journey of Lent, Janell started writing a new meditation entitled, "A Tap on My Shoulder," in which she hears a whisper. Michael Ruff Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson In his first ever interweb interview, perhaps interview period, 3rd Zoom of his lifetime, and that includes 2 with his family, multiple Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter, BMI Award and Cable Ace Award winner, Michael Ruff, tried to be a little ruff, deflecting and avoiding answering questions about his past but ultimately, answering my questions he did. Even the really tough ones. And the password was FUN! I've had a bit of a run with bad boy musicians who are a tad unpredictable and contrarian- I love a good challenge. Well, I'm actually getting too old for that shit, but Michael's worth it. HIs story hasn't been told. Research for the show came up with a bio he'd written himself on his website, or had written for him, a few brief liner notes on a couple of videos, and 3 really short blogs, I mean really short. The end. No Wiki, no articles, no interviews for background. I was tightrope walking without a net of any kind for the first time myself and after getting over the initial shock of his response to a question being, “No, I don't wanna…” That's not an exact quote, fyi, I'm too fatigued to try to find the moment, at the moment, it's also the first time in 7 years I didn't stay up no matter how late and write liner notes, on the same night as the show, ever. Consider this a cherry breaking for both of us. Too harsh? For a man who values honesty seemingly above almost all else, except maybe love, I think he can take it.* *See his story about how he, with the help of his higher power to hear him tell it, saved and changed Snuffy's life for good. For someone who's never done a Zoom podcast, Michael had arguably the best sound and set up of any guest I've had the privilege to sit down with––pointing up how much work I have to do on my own deal. Also pointing up his greatness, what makes him a one-of-a-kind brilliant artist, worth everything and anything. He displayed that brilliance tinkling throughout and featured on his new, as yet unreleased, Nobody But You, his classic, I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know, my favorite, Wishing Well, and a taste of the brand new, Beautiful Children. *sigh* We talked about being born in Utah, Connecticut, Boston, Upstate New York, The Bitter End, The Flying Jib, At My Place, Hawaii, a bounty of musicians who populated them, playing with Rickie Lee Jones, MDing Chaka Khan, bringing in the Snuff, being brought into Laura Brannigan by the him, Eric Burdon, Clive Davis's pass, his Warner Brothers deal, Bonnie Raitt covering his Cry on My Shoulder on Nick of Time, self sabotage in work and in life, and the work to right that latter wrong. HIs massive love of his wife, his kids, his grandkid, his Island, its people, his music, faith, and his life. Michael's jazz… an improvisation…his artistry, his impromptu, in the moment, in his skin, funny, irreverent, genius… fun, complicated, incomprehensible for its difficulty, made to look easy, is the stuff that makes him a treasure I hope he gifts us more of in the days and years ahead. A short west coast tour in June with John Cruz approaches. Dates here: JohnCruz.com We'll be there with massive smiles on. My takeaway - underneath the self-assured confidence Michael is a man who cares very much about pleasing, with his art, his craft, his life––he gives his very best. Even when he tries to withhold, he shares without filter. I'm even more enamored now, even if I did have to work for it. We had the pleasure of interviewing Faith Marie Zoom video!Singer-Songwriter Faith Marie, has released her single “Alleyways,” today. Released in collaboration with the label UUin, “Alleyways” is the second single off her upcoming 3 song debut EP, More than I am. Written by Faith, “Alleyways” is about a pivotal point in one's transition into adulthood. She elaborates “I realized in order to grow, I had to let go of other people's ideas of me and explore the parts of myself I was afraid to address and take responsibility for my trauma and healing.” The moody, yet ethereal track serves as the perfect introduction to her attentive songwriting and delicate vocals. The synth and guitar heavy sounds, paired with ominous echoes of different musical elements and vocals, is meant to represent the drive needed to walk into the unknown while still facing the unease of what you'll find in the process.Hailing from Provo, Utah, Faith's foray into songwriting began at the age of 13, launching a successful YouTube channel that attracted over 121,000 subscribers over the next five years, in addition to over 80 million Spotify and Youtube streams combined. Inspired by the likes of My Chemical Romance, Paramore, and Brockhampton, Faith pushes herself creatively when it comes to genre-bending. In 2015, her love for artists that seamlessly cross genres led her to posting a cover of Bring Me The Horizon's “Drown,” which immediately went viral and is currently sitting at 5M views. “Bring Me The Horizon has always been the most inspiring to me because they don't care about upholding a genre or appeasing specific types of fans that listen to them, they do what inspires them” Faith states. The virality of this cover catapulted her into the release of her debut single “Antidote,” which Faith wrote and self-produced. Now, 7 years later, Faith has released multiple singles ranging from the orchestrally adorned “Little Girl” and the electronic-laced “Devil on My Shoulder,” each dealing with themes of struggle, anxiety and hope. Faith is constantly working to perfect her craft of songwriting with each release, and is also currently pursuing a bachelors in audio engineering. She elaborates “I'm on a lifelong mission to master as much of the music creation process as possible.”We want to hear from you! This honor is given annually to individuals whose selfless service as entertainers perpetuates the legacy of the late Bob Hope.   Recorded July 1, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America.   From WIKIPEDIA: Michael James Peterson (born August 7, 1959) is an American country music artist. He made his debut on the country music scene in 1997 with his self-titled debut album, which produced five Top 40 hits on Billboards Hot Country Singles & Tracks, including the Number One hit "From Here to Eternity". Peterson's second album, 1999's Being Human, produced two more chart singles, and a third album, 2004's Modern Man, was issued only in Europe. Peterson also made a cameo appearance on an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. After attending high school at Richland High School in Richland, WA, Peterson later earned a football scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University, where he won a national championship. One of his teammates, Brad Westering, was also working as a producer for Deniece Williams at the time. Through Westering, Peterson got the opportunity to write songs for Williams, as well as gospel headliners The Imperials. This all led to the production of Peterson's first release, "Michael Peterson", a collection of contemporary Christian songs, on Sparrow Records in 1986. Eventually, Peterson traveled to Nashville, Tennessee where he started working as a professional songwriter, collaborating with other writers such as Josh Leo and Robert Ellis Orrall.   Orrall suggested that Peterson sign to a recording contract, and in December 1996, Peterson was signed to Reprise Records, a division of the Warner Music Group. His debut single, "Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie", was released that year, charting at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts and No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the lead-off single to Peterson's self-titled debut album (not to be confused with the Christian album of the same name from 1986), which also produced four more chart singles. The second one, "From Here to Eternity", became Peterson's first and only Number One hit, while "Too Good to Be True" reached No. 8. Following it were "When the Bartender Cries" at No. 37 and "By the Book" at No. 19. The album was certified gold by the RIAA for shipping 500,000 copies in the U.S. Also in 1997, Peterson was named Male Artist of the Year by Billboard. In 1998, Peterson appeared on Jenny Simpson's 1998 self-titled album, singing duet vocals on "Grow Young with You". Peterson made a guest appearance on a 1998 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger called "Eyes of a Ranger."   Peterson released his second album, Being Human, in 1999.[3] Its lead-off single, "Somethin' 'bout a Sunday", failed to reach top 40, and "Sure Feels Real Good" peaked at No. 39. Also in 1999, Peterson co-wrote the title track to Travis Tritt's album No More Looking over My Shoulder, which was released as a single. After a Super Hits album for the label, Peterson exited Warner Music Group.   After his departure from Warner, Peterson signed to Monument Records Nashville. His third studio album, Modern Man, was to have been released in 2002 for the label. Although its title track and "Lesson in Goodbye" both entered the country charts (with the former being the highest-debuting single of his career), the album itself was not issued in the US due to a restructuring of the label's parent company. AGR, a European record label, acquired the album and issued it in Europe in 2004. Six singles were released from it in Europe, including Peterson's own rendition of "No More Looking over My Shoulder." Also included on the album was the track "Right About Now", which Ty Herndon later released from his 2007 album of the same name.   Peterson's songs have been covered by a number of artists. Though his last charting song was in 2002, he continues to release albums and performs at military benefits.   https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com  https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

Mary J. Blige Welcome to the I Want to Believe podcast. In 1990, a young couple stopped at the Amber Beacon Tower on the Singapore shoreline. Moments later, nothing would ever be the same. I’ll tell ya about it in a sec… A quick reminder that ALL of our I Want to Believe social media & email are in the show notes. My brand-new book, Granite Skies: A Disconcerted Journey Through the Unknown is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase at The Green Hand Bookshop in Portland, Maine (and online). Alright… let’s talk about an unsolved murder and a haunting. A young couple, James Soh and Kelly Hong were friends and classmates in secondary school. They enjoyed each other’s company throughout the years. But when James was attending University and studying polytechnic he finally asked Kelly out, making it about a decade after they first met in school. The pair ventured out to the Singapore shoreline for their first date as an official couple. After walking for a while, they stopped for a short break, sitting to rest and talk upon the stairs of the Amber Beacon Tower. The tower is a brightly colored beacon that exhumes a radiant light and makes for a convenient resting place, positioned right on the beachfront. The unsuspecting couple were sitting peacefully when... they were attacked. Listen to the episode for the rest of the story. CW: Suicide, Mass Violence at a School It's that time of year where you see teenagers dressed in formal wear in the middle of the afternoon, so it's Prom Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey are discussing two horror films where death comes with a corsage! The Classic Film: Night of the Creeps (1986) "In 1959, an alien experiment crashes to earth and infects a fraternity member. They freeze the body, but in the modern day, two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which proceeds to infect the campus with parasites that transform their hosts into killer zombies" (IMDb.com). We can't believe we've never seen this instant favorite 80s comedy horror pastiche. The Modern Film: Tragedy Girls (2017) "A twist on the slasher genre, following two death-obsessed teenage girls who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small mid-western town into a frenzy, and cement their legacy as modern horror legends" (IMDb.com). Perhaps the biggest tragedy here is the squandered promise of an interesting premise and compelling actresses. Get more at podsematary.com!
