Author and actress Elizabeth Gilpin joins Tim to talk about the story behind her bestselling book called Stolen: A Memoir. The story starts with how one night when she was 15 years old, she was pulled from her bedroom in the middle of the night and placed into what is best called the system for troubled teens. That was the beginning of the nightmarish life she would endure in a burgeoning and unregulated industry for troubled teens. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Stolen_auphonic.mp3 The story we're going to tell today is not unusual, at least the start of that story. Who doesn't know someone or a family where they had an out-of-control teenager who hasn't responded to anything the parents tried to do to help them turn things around? Elizabeth Gilpin was one of those teens. She came from a good family. She had parents who cared about and loved her. But she suffered from depression and that manifested itself in troubled behaviors. Her parents felt they tried everything, but nothing was working. So, when Elizabeth was 15 years old, her mother and father turned to a relatively new type of treatment field called the “troubled teen industry” or TTI. And that's where Elizabeth's story goes from common to unusual. And perhaps from the unusual to the disturbing. Today’s show takes a look at the difficult topics of postpartum psychosis and infanticide through the eyes of the filmmakers of the documentary, Not Carol. The film covers the story of Carol Coronado, who was convicted of the 2014 murders of her three young daughters in CA while highlighting the desperate need for education and services for mothers and fathers in recognizing and treating postpartum psychosis. Join us for a conversation with the producers and directors of Not Carol, Eamon Harrington and Veronica Brady. Eamon Harrington has co-owned Planet Grande Pictures since forming the company in 1993 with John Watkin. During that time, he has produced and directed hundreds of hours for all the major broadcast and cable outlets, winning seven Emmys along the way. Other industry honors include a Peabody Award and a DuPont Columbia Baton. Before forming Planet Grande, Eamon spent three years as Head of Production at VH1 in New York. Eamon has directed dozens of documentaries and unscripted series. His Emmy award-winning documentaries include Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am? (with Maria Shriver for HBO), Shades of a Single Protein (with Oprah Winfrey for ABC), Positive: A Journey into AIDS (ABC), and In Full Effect (FOX). Eamon is a hands-on producer and director, and frequently shoots many of his projects. That same hands-on approach brings him into the editing room on nearly every project.   Veronica Brady is a director, producer, and archivist. She has a varied career in theatre, TV, and film, which includes directing over 100 plays, helming three theatre companies as Artistic Director, and working on many TV shows, numerous documentaries, and feature film productions. Veronica has received an Emmy, multiple TV awards, and recognition in Ovation and LA Weekly for her theatre work. Her most recent film work as archival producer includes the documentaries: Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie (a Hulu documentary), Love 99 (Napa Valley Film Festival), Not Carol, Johnny Strange: Born to Fly, Ethel (an Emmy-nominated/Television Critic Award-winning documentary produced for HBO), Every Fifteen Minutes (a Telly Award-winning short film), Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am? (an Emmy-winning and Television Critic Award-winning HBO documentary), and Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans (a 5 episode series produced for Discovery/Velocity).   Show Highlights: How the documentary takes a look at maternal mental illness, specifically postpartum psychosis Not Carol, which follows the story of 30-year-old Carol Coronado, arrested for the murder of her three young daughters, all under 2-½ years old The 4-5 year filmmaking journey looking at postpartum psychosis through the lens of Carol’s case wrapped up in advocacy and information What really happens when psychosis sets in and how little we know and understand about it The importance of populating the film with leading experts on postpartum psychosis and survivors who have lived through it What surprised Eamon and Veronica about the lack of laws for infanticide in the US, meaning these women are tried for 1st-degree murder with no recourse for legal defense, all based on laws dating back more than 150 years How these women are at risk even when they are incarcerated How the title Not Carol came about and fits the story What Eamon and Veronica wished people understood about postpartum psychosis: how to recognize this treatable, temporary illness The lack of substantial help for those left behind after a postpartum psychosis tragedy The double whammy of the illness AND the trauma The numbers: 4 million babies are born in the US yearly; 1 in 5 moms will experience some form of postpartum depression; about 2 in 1000 will have postpartum psychosis; of these with PP psychosis, 4% will commit infanticide, and 5% will commit suicide Why Eamon and Veronica think young women AND young men should see the film, to help them understand that postpartum psychosis is a real thing Why much patience was required in the filmmaking process How Eamon and Veronica secured the trust and approval of individuals and Postpartum Support International to tell the story How Eamon and Veronica have become advocates in Carol’s story and for her family How to have a screening in your area   Resources: Film information and the 5-part podcast:  https://www.notcarol.com/ For more information, please see the Planet Grande website:  https://www.planetgrande.com/ Postpartum Support International:  www.postpartum.net

Our two guests today are Tom Mackey, the former winemaker at St. Francis Winery, now owner of Mackey Cellars, and Jim Morris, winemaker at Charles Krug. Barry Herbst is back in today too. Tom Mackey retired in 2012 after 30 years at St. Francis. Dan Berger says Tom knows where all the great grapes are so he is not surprised he is back in the business. Mackey Cellars has sold out its first two vintages, 2013 and 2014. Tom went to Fresno State after being accepted also at UC Davis. He chose his school because he had heard that Fresno graduates all got jobs right after graduating. Dan Berger mentions a lot of great winemakers who also went to Fresno State. Tom started at St. Francis when they were small and located across from Chateau St. Jean. They had expanded as much as they could at that location so by the early 90s they needed more space. As they grew their production, in the last 90s they built a brand new facility. It was built in three phases, main building, barrel building and visitor center. He helped design and build it and also develop the staff. Jim Morris is also in today. He is now at Charles Krug. He lives in Healdsburg and drives 45 minutes to Napa every day. He says, "there is nothing in Sonoma County to prepare you for Napa County." Dan Berger tells that once, a newspaper editor asked him to write a story "Napa versus Sonoma" and Dan says he found that there was and still is a difference. Jim Morris is now the winemaker at Charles Krug, the oldest winery in Napa. Jakob Schram was their first winemaker and Jacob Berringer was their second winemaker. Barry describes the new Bottle Barn website which will allow them to sell selected bottles online. Dan says that when Tom started in Sonoma Valley, Kenwood was new and the name wasn't famous yet. But a lot of people in Sonoma County knew that Kenwood was a wine area. Tom remembers Buena Vista, Sebastiani and Grand Cru in the early  70s then St. Jean came in in 1974. The differences between Sonoma and Napa are less and less, mostly in the property prices. "You can't blame them for focussing on Cabernet because that's what they're known for." They are tasting a 2015 Sonoma Valley Cabernet. The grapes came from St. Francis' Wild Oak vineyard. The vines are about 12-14 years old. The fruit is concentrated but balanced. Jim Morris tells how they are reclaiming and rebuilding the Mondavi legacy and they are encouraging him to develop the property as an attraction. So, for instance, they have a comedy series at the winery. They are also part of the Napa Valley Film Festival. Next year they will do a music series. Now they are tasting the Frei Brothers Russian River Valley Chardonnay which won a Double Gold Medal at the Harvest Fair. Dan says that since a slowdown in the wine industry in about 1990, there have been great advances in grape growing and wine making. Dan thinks that more distinctiveness will creep into the varieties. Vineyard designation is the wave of the future as far as high-end wine. They also taste the Laurier Pinot Noir.

"I like your shoes." Those were the first words that Luca Guadagnino, the director of Call Me By Your Name, one of this year's biggest critical hits and Oscar favorites, said to me as I sat down to interview him. Truth be told, I did wear my red sequined Converse so I might have been fishing for that. Guadagnino himself was sporting fabulous red suede shoes so, of course, I returned the compliment.  Both Luca and one of his film's stars, Michael Stuhlbarg, were in town for the Napa Valley Film Festival. Stuhlbarg was receiving a Spotlight award and had two films at the festival - The Shape of Water and Call Me By Your Name. A fascinating duo, as Guadagnino was verbose and gave detailed and long responses to questions and Stuhlbarg with a more methodical approach to answers.  Throughout the interview we talk about the journey for the book to get to film, getting Sufjan Stevens aboard and even a casting scoop the upcoming sequel (hint: it's someone from The Big Splash). New Podcast with Actor Glen Powell! In this installation of "Kahnversations," we interview Glen Powell. Recently described by The Hollywood Reporter as the “Next Big Thing,” Glen Powell is well on his way to becoming one of tinsel towns’ most sought after actors. Glen just finished filming the FOX feature HIDDEN FIGURES. Powell will star as famed astronaut John Glenn in the historically focused film. The plot centers on a group of women responsible for providing NASA with important statistical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space mission. Powell will share the screen with Kevin Costner, Kristen Dunst, Jim Parsons, Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer. The film is currently slated for a January 2017 release. Up next for Powell is the second season of the FOX hit SCREAM QUEENS. Powell will reprise his fan favorite role of Chad Radwell, President of the Dickie Dollars Scholars. The Ryan Murphy show proved to be a critic and fan favorite among the Fall 2015 freshman class. Also upcoming for Powell is THE SET UP, starring opposite Emilia Clarke. The MGM film is currently in pre-production but slated for a 2017 release. This past December, Powell wrapped production on the Iraq War drama SAND CASTLE. Further proving his acting chops, Powell will star opposite action heavy weights Henry Cavil, Nicholas Holt and Luke Evans. The film follows an American military unit on a mission to repair a water system in the turbulent Iraqi village of Baqubah. Powell plays Sgt. Falvy, a tough-minded and foul-mouthed solider hailing from the south. The film is slated for a late 2016 release. 2016 is proving to be the year of Powell as he has been featured in two major motion pictures including April’s critically acclaimed film EVERYBODY WANTS SOME, directed by Richard Linklater. The Paramount Pictures’ film, set in the '80’s, follows a college freshman who rolls with some colorful baseball players. The highly anticipated film is being referred to as the spiritual sequel to Linklater’s cult classic film “Dazed And Confused.” Additionally, Glen was seen in January’s comedy RIDE ALONG 2, opposite funnyman Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, portraying a lethal drug-lord on the streets of Atlanta. Powell will be seen in BEYOND DECEIT, alongside silver screen royalty Sir Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino. The independent film is slated for a late 2016 release. In 2014, Glen co-starred with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Harrison Ford in THE EXPENDABLES 3. He joined the ranks as an expert hacker and drone pilot named Thron, singular to none in his intensity and agility. Powell was also seen in the independent thriller, WIND WALKERS, from director Russell Friendenberg. Other film credits include the independent comedy SEX ED, opposite Hayley Joel Osment, RED WING, starring alongside Bill Paxton, as well as the final installment of the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, opposite Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway. This November, he will be honored as a rising star at the Napa Valley Film Festival. When not in production, Glen resides in Los Angeles. There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

Josey Gerrish, featured in The Caretaker With immigration reform stalled in Congress and the California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights being reviewed by the senate, tonight, we bring you a discussion on immigration. In studio with us we have Mercy Albaran with Mujeres Unidas y Activas working on their Domestic Workers Bill of Rights campaign; Noela Payton, a domestic worker who fought back and won a wage claim after her employer refused to pay overtime; and Roseli Ilano with Immigrant Nation, a short film series that spotlights the commonalities between recent immigrants and those whose families have lived in the US for generations. The director of the film series is award-winning filmmaker Theo Rigby. As we're in fund drive, we're offering his documentary, Sin País, which won the best documentary and audience choice award at the Napa Valley Film Festival, as a premium. And we hear from R.J. Lozada, our international reporter in the Philippines, with his commentary (passed on to us by Secretary General of BAYAN-USA Jessica Antonio) fresh from the people's response to the State of the Nation Address (SONA 2013).
