Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po were introduced to British viewers on 31st March, 1997 - launching an international phenomenon and changing kid's television forever. ‘Teletubbies' was an enormous hit for the BBC, but not without controversy: from viewers concerned that the characters' toddlerish language might impede the linguistic development of the nation's children, to angry Radio Times readers who claimed the BBC were committing ‘cultural vandalism' by axing the long-running series Playdays. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly get lost in the weeds of Teletubbies Wiki fandom; revisit the ‘toy rage' that the show had inspired by Christmas 1997; and reveal why the first generation ‘tubbies never did live appearances… Further Reading: • ‘Teletubbies turn 20: how four blinking toddlers became a true TV phenomenon' (The Guardian, 2017): https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/mar/31/teletubbies-turn-20-how-four-blinking-toddlers-became-a-true-tv-phenomenon • ‘The Great Distractor' (Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy, 2021): https://www.mediatechdemocracy.com/work/the-great-distractor • ‘Teletubbies: Ned's Bicycle' (BBC, 1997): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9woh2gKx1rM&list=PL8Zq4IrtuktnIh_XkWqMRfNkebVPgUIwy Love the show? Ten měl dětem, rodičům i školám ulehčit celý přijímací proces, který loni kvůli nástupu silných populačních ročníků ovládl chaos a měsíce nejistoty.
V posledním měsíci stát spustil dva elektronické systémy a v obou případech start provázely komplikace. Kvůli zájmu o elektronické občanské průkazy byly problémy i s dalšími digitálními službami.

In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly get lost in the weeds of Teletubbies Wiki fandom; revisit the ‘toy rage' that the show had inspired by Christmas 1997; and reveal why the first generation ‘tubbies never did live appearances… Further Reading: • ‘Teletubbies turn 20: how four blinking toddlers became a true TV phenomenon' (The Guardian, 2017): https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/mar/31/teletubbies-turn-20-how-four-blinking-toddlers-became-a-true-tv-phenomenon • ‘The Great Distractor' (Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy, 2021): https://www.mediatechdemocracy.com/work/the-great-distractor • ‘Teletubbies: Ned's Bicycle' (BBC, 1997): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9woh2gKx1rM&list=PL8Zq4IrtuktnIh_XkWqMRfNkebVPgUIwy If you enjoyed this episode, there's three-and-a-half minutes MORE material about the Teletubbies exclusively available to our supporters today! This week sees us paying homage to the montage and though it's really an editing technique if you want to be pedantic about it which I do, they're a useful tool in the screenwriters arsenal too, perhaps being used to propel the plot forward as in the classic ROCKY-style training montage or maybe used to set tone and weave plotlines together as in The Story Of The Apartment sequence in the brilliant Brazilian crime drama CITY OF GOD. Join us as we chat through some of our favourite examples and as always, let us know your favourite too and we'll bring it up next week. HUSTLERS (2019) is a movie based on a magazine article about a series of real crimes that took place after the financial crash in September 2008. Destiny (Constance Wu) is a new girl on the dancing scene and is quickly taken under the wing of alpha female Ramona (Jennifer Lopez) who teaches her the ropes at Moves strip club. When the money runs out the girls find themselves with limited options, and, desperate to bring back the good times to the club and make a quick buck for their various dependants, they decide to exploit their former customers by drugging them and running up huge credit card debt in their name. Given their clientele is made up almost exclusively of Wall Street types or shady sexual predators, this is essentially a victimless crime. Teletubby Land was actually a farmer's field in Stratford-Upon-Avon so our frankly ridiculous speculation about the origins of the TELETUBBIES is largely redundant. Don't think about that while you listen to us ramble. As fathers of course we have all seen the adventures of Po, Laa-Laa, Dipsy and Tinky Winky many times before so it seems surprising it's taken us this long to get round to chatting about the giant, colourful space aliens, with their uncanny valley baby features and television stomachs broadcasting real world children's stories twice in the same 20 minute programme. Twice! What monsters these people are.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Leave me alone !

Tinky-Winky, LaLa, Dipsy & Edgar Allan Po An uncharacteristic happiness and contentment falls on the show this week as Aidan, Graham and Rob discuss "Paddington 2". Before that though, there are all the regular features - including Off the Shelf where Graham tackles Second Run's release of Otakar Vávra's historical nightmare "Witchhammer", Aidan flees the nudging piano as he reviews Indicator's reissue of Freddie Francis's "Torture Garden", and Rob talks about a book. Yes, a book! Does he know what show he's on? After that that it's time to see if Paul King has continued to look after that bear from darkest Peru. President Donald Trump may have finally crossed a political line with his tweet attacking MSNBC's Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski. The outrage came swiftly from both Democrats and Republicans, but these constant distractions from the White House are killing any chance Republicans have of getting things done in Washington. Rep. Jason Chaffetz is leaving Congress for Fox News. What will he be remembered for by Utahns, and when will he start laying the groundwork for a run for governor in 2020? We speak with Provo Mayor John Curtis, who is the frontrunner to win the GOP nomination in the August 15 primary election. What kind of Congressman will he aspire to be if he wins? Plus, the "simultaneous game" takes on healthcare reform, the special congressional election and this year's municipal elections. Bryan Schott and Mike Winder make you the smartest person in the room when you talk about politics.
Kaner and Amby discuss the Calhamer estate auction of original Diplomacy paraphernalia, other news and game updates before interviewing Super_Dipsy and Morg from PlayDiplomacy before Amby gives his final thoughts on PlayDip after his exposure during his Online Diplomacy Championship game. Apologies in advance, this is our longest podcast yet at around 2 hours 15 mins! Latest news The guys announce that the DiplomacyCast podcast is back after a 8 month hiatus. Its a good listen focused more on the face-to-face aspects of the game rather than online which we cover off (2 mins 30 secs) The big news is the Calhamer estate auction over at eBay where the creator of Diplomacy, Alan Calhamer, has a heap of original Dip material when he created it in the 1950's. He passed away 4 years ago and now his estate is being sold off. Both Amby and Kaner really like the way the gameplay works in Versailles where you're playing as a major and minor power and how Super_Dipsy describes it (1 hr 10 mins) Super_Dipsy starts turning things over to Morg as he explains how games before being php coded for PlayDip are first played out extensively in the forum. Will & Lucas have BABIES on the brain this episode, as Baby Kate enters the Arthur-verse! It's a Rashomon-style origin story, and the boys talk about everything babies, as well as Chubby Bunny, the Teletubbies, and more! Please note there is some mild language; apologies for the audio quality in this particular episode. EPISODES: Arthur's Baby/DW's Baby
Is Jimmy Fallon "legitimizing" Donald Trump? Sure seems like it, much to the chagrin of Gloria Steinem and the Hard Left. The New York Times describes the "tsunami of unease" and "creeping dread" now afflicting Hillary supporters -- including a bichon-frise poodle named Dipsy -- as Donald Trump takes polling leads in several swing states. Hillary Clinton gives a supremely sleepy response to the terror bombings on the East Coast, and President Obama inserts himself into the 2016 campaign with self-absorbed frettings over his "legacy." Also, we share a Vangelis vignette on Captain Bligh, the Mutiny on the Bounty and remnant Never Trumpers. Plus, an appreciation of the virtues of resilience, tenacity and faith -- via Trump & Fallon on The Tonight Show. With Listener Calls and Music from Hank Williams Sr., Cesaria Evora, Salif Keita, Social Distortion and Abba.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We learned this week that Jane Horrocks, Jim Broadbent and Fearne Cotton are to voice a new run of the hit children's TV series Teletubbies. It's estimated that around a billion children in over 120 countries have watched Teletubbies but there have been no new episodes since 2001, and the imminent return of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po has made news around the world. But who, or what, are the Teletubbies? And why have they proved such an enduring cultural phenomenon? Presenter: Becky Milligan Producers: Ben Crighton and Hannah Barnes.
