Shred With Shifty
Elliott Easton's Countryfied Solo on “My Best Friend's Girl”

Shred With Shifty

The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut record changed the world of power pop forever. Guitarist and co-vocalist Ric Ocasek penned all the tunes, but lead guitarist Elliott Easton transformed them with his tasteful 6-string stylings. This time on Shred With Shifty, Easton sits down with Chris Shiflett to show him how to play the solo from “My Best Friend's Girl.” Born in Brooklyn before winding up in Long Island, Easton washed dishes to save up for his first 1971 Fender Telecaster, and after high school he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he picked up key theory and technique that he still holds dear. Reared on country and rockabilly players like Roy Buchanan, Jesse Ed Davis, Gram Parsons, James Burton, and Roy Nichols, Easton brought a slick twang to Ocasek's new-wave gems. Easton tells Shifty how the band came to work with producer Roy Thomas Baker in London, while crashing at a label-provided mansion nearby and driving a loaned Jaguar and Land Rover to the sessions. Easton's celebrated leads didn't take long to come together. “On my mother's memory, I did all my guitar parts in a day and a half,” he says. All he had with him was a 1978 or '77 Telecaster with a Bartolini Firebird-style mini humbucker in it, a red Les Paul, a Martin acoustic, and two effects: the brand-new Boss CE-1 and a Morley EVO-1 Echo Volume pedal. His amp of choice in those days? An Ampeg VT-22 or VT-40. After running down his giddy-up guitar parts from “Best Friend's Girl,” Easton talks about which modern players impress him, why he doesn't consider himself a shredder, and the experience of working with Mutt Lange: “I spent as much time tuning with him as playing!” If you're able to help, here are some charities aimed at assisting musicians affected by the fires in L.A:  https://guitarcenterfoundation.org https://www.cciarts.org/relief.html https://www.musiciansfoundation.org https://fireaidla.org https://www.musicares.org https://www.sweetrelief.org Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314 Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle Special thanks to Jon Romeo, Michelle Yoon, Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

1987 - January: Beastie Boys “Licensed to Ill”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2025 39:31

It's not every day that we at What the Riff?!? review a rap album, but the Beastie Boys aren't your every day rap group either.  Hailing from New York City, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Michael “Mike D” Diamond came out of an experimental hardcore punk band (think “punk” but faster) called The Young Aborigines.  After changing their name to the Beastie Boys, they saw some local success from a comedy hip hop single based on a prank call to a Carvel Ice Cream franchise.  They then began to incorporate more rap and hip hop into their sets, and ended up connecting with Rick Rubin, who formed Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons. Many of their songs were locally distributed, and led to uncomfortable situations when three white guys would show up to perform for a mostly black audience that had heard their music but never saw the group.  Their courage and live performance skills won the audience over.Shortly after supporting Madonna as an opening act on the Virgin Tour in 1985, the band recorded their debut studio and breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill.  It was released by Def Jam and Columbia Records, and became one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records, and had shipped over ten million copies in the United states by 2015.  It was also a critical success, and was selected as one of "The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums."  It was hailed for hits stylized rapping, and its combination of hip hop and punk sensibilities. The Beastie Boys would go on to greater heights of stardom in the mid to late 90's as they moved in a more alternative direction, but this is where it all started.Lynch brings us this illin' record for today's podcast. No Sleep Till BrooklynThe song that opens side 2 is inspired by an exhausting tour, and it chronicles many of the events that wear the band out along with their determination to not rest until they get back home to Brooklyn.  It is often the closing song at their concerts.  It also features a solo guitar riff by Kerry King of the heavy metal band Slayer.  Paul RevereThis song is a fictionalized account of how the Beastie Boys met.  It was inspired by an incident when they encountered Joseph Simmons aka "Run" of Run-D.M.C. in a recording studio.  It features a reversed beat from an 808 drum machine.Hold It Now, Hit ItThis was the first single to be released from the album, and was ranked number 27 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.  The video switches between concert footage, and the band lip synching in front of a fish-eye lens.  Brass MonkeyThis is a later-produced song that takes its name from an alcoholic drink by the Heublein Company.  It samples Wild Sugar's “Bring It Here” in the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:If I Only Had A Brain by Ray Bolger and Judy Garland (from the motion picture “The Wizard of Oz”)Actor, dancer, and singer Ray Bolger who played the scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” died in January of 1987. STAFF PICKS:Still In Hollywood by Concrete BlondeWayne kicks off the staff picks with the debut single from American alternative rock group Concrete Blonde's first and self-titled album.  This post-punk sound was bubbling up in the LA street scene at the time, and the lyrics portray a life in Hollywood where the town drags you down.  Right Next Door (Because of Me) by Robert CrayBruce's staff pick is a song off Robert Cray's fifth studio album, “Strong Persuader.” The lyrics chronicle an infidelity breaking up a marriage as told from the man who had an affair with the next door wife.  Cray played with a number of artists, and was at the final concert with Stevie Ray Vaughan before his death in a helicopter crash. Too Hot to Stop by Benjamin OrrRob brings us a solo single from the second vocalist of The Cars.  This keyboard-heavy piece was off Orr's only solo album entitled “The Lace.”  After they released their Greatest Hits album in 1985, The Cars briefly split up to pursue solo projects, and both Orr and Ocasek hit the charts.Land of Confusion by GenesisLynch closes out the staff picks with a rare political track from Genesis that questions global leadership and the threat of nuclear war during the cold war era.  It is famous for its video which uses puppets from Peter Fluck and Roger Law caricaturing political figures of the time, and the band members themselves. COMEDY TRACK:Ronnie's Rap by Ron and the DC CrewRonald Reagan was a hot commodity for comedy in 1987, as this satirical rap shows.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Thom shares his experience of taking his daughter to her first concert to see Jimmy Eat World, while Mark brings updates from Burro Borracho Records for Columbia Jones and Regan Ashton. Listen to how a fortuitous meeting with Rick Ocasek, frontman of the band The Cars, fast-tracked their journey. Mark and Thom talk about the band's early days, including how Ocasek helped them produce their first album, which was recorded at Electric Lady Studios. Mark and Thom spend some time discussing their biggest single "Popular" and how a song that resonated with diverse audiences for different reasons had a distinct resonance with the 90's music scene but also eclipsed some of the genius of the rest of their album. And, always, they'll do a play-by-play breakdown of all songs from high/low and give you their top 3 songs from the album. Everything Will Be Alright in the End Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine   Two songs into Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Rivers Cuomo sings "we belong in the rock world," a repudiation of the big beat experimentation of Raditude, a 2009 record that found Weezer working with such pop producers as Dr. Luke and Butch Walker. Weezer fans eager for Pinkerton, Pt. 2 are often quick to bristle at Cuomo's experimentations, so when the guitarist sings that they're "rockin' out like it's '94," he's not only not lying -- they went so far as to once again hire Ric Ocasek, the producer of the group's debut, to helm this ninth studio album -- but he's reassuring his audience that he's left all those pounding dance beats behind. The weird thing is, Weezer already shook off the ghost of Raditude via 2010's quickly released indie Hurley, so the emphasis on the group returning to rock feels a little odd, but Everything Will Be Alright in the End does trump its immediate predecessor by being bigger, bolder, slicker, and stickier than Hurley. Some of this is indeed due to the presence of Ocasek. His exacting production, anchored as much in pummeling arena rock as new wave pop, polishes and preserves Cuomo's quirks, but it's also true that Rivers has decided to indulge in his eccentricities once again. Take away the woolly mammoth-sized guitars and "Back to the Shack," with its overt references to "In the Garage," and Everything Will Be Alright in the End doesn't feel especially like early Weezer, not with the dexterous syncopation of "I've Had It Up to Here" providing a midpoint palate-cleanser and a neo-prog rock suite concluding the proceedings. By having the record follow these twisty detours, Cuomo provides a counterpoint to the classicist pop Weezer pursue elsewhere, but even such succinct, sculpted pop as "The British Are Coming," "Ain't Got Nobody," "Cleopatra," and "Go Away" (the latter a duet with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino) never feels like a desperate scramble back home. Rather, a feeling of acceptance underpins Everything Will Be Alright in the End: there's a sense that Weezer made another record of massive, hooky rock not only because that's what the fans want but because they know it's what they do best. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo sits down with Shifty to talk Yngwie, Phish, and the outro solo to "Only in Dreams" off the “Blue” album. Head to http://volume.com/shifty to watch the full episodes! "I don't use effects," Rivers Cuomo states, matter-of-factly, to Chris Shiflett on this second episode of Shred With Shifty. That might come as a bit of a shock to all the Weezer fans out there who went and bought a Big Muff in an effort to imitate the alt-rock guitarist's sound. For his tones on the band's famous debut album, he went straight into his amp, and the only effect heard on that record, he says, was a bit of delay on the swells in "Only in Dreams." The outro solo to "Only in Dreams," the final song on the album, is the subject of this ep. And after the guitarists spend a few minutes discussing Cuomo's inspirations, influences, and the production of both that album and the band's sleeper success, Pinkerton, Cuomo walks Shifty through the solo lick by lick. There's the sequence of octaves high up on the neck, colored by an unexpectedly placed major 7th chord ... and Cuomo's vibrato, which reminds Chris of Brian May. What shapes a guitarist's vibrato? “Must have something to do with your nerves between your brain and your fingers,” Cuomo says. Before the recording of the album at Electric Lady Studios in NYC, Weezer's label insisted they work with a producer, which Cuomo rejected at first. Then he heard the Cars' "Just What I Needed" in the supermarket one day, and sought out the band's guitarist, Ric Ocasek. Ocasek was the one to push Cuomo to record an outro solo over the previously stripped-down, rhythm-section-based final three minutes of "Only in Dreams." After weeks of Ocasek's encouragement, Cuomo found himself alone in the studio one weekend and improvised his way through the solo. "This might be hard to believe, but when we started out, we were much more like a hippie band," Cuomo explains, describing his past devotion to Trey Anastasio. As it turns out, part of the "Only in Dreams" solo came out of Weezer's jamming portions of the song during their live shows. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! The Making of LET GO by Nada Surf - featuring Matthew Caws

For the 20th anniversary of Nada Surf's third album, LET GO, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca formed the band in 1992, they eventually linked up with drummer, Ira Elliot. They spent several years grinding it out in their hometown of New York City where they worked multiple jobs and hustled to get their music heard. During a chance encounter with Ric Ocasek at a show at the Knitting Factory, Matthew Caws gave him a demo tape. A couple weeks later, Ocasek got back in touch with Matthew and offered to record them if they were able to sign to a label. Luckily, Elektra Records offered them a deal soon after and they went on to release their Ocasek-produced debut album, HIGH/LOW in 1996. Due to the unexpected success of the first single, “Popular,” Nada Surf found themselves under a lot of pressure for their follow-up album. THE PROXIMITY EFFECT was released in Europe in 1998 but Elektra got cold feet and decided not to release the album in the U.S. and ended up dropping the band. With no record contract, they found themselves back in New York, working odd jobs and calling in favors for help recording their third album, which ended up becoming LET GO. In this episode, Matthew Caws joins us for an in-depth conversation about this pivotal moment in the band's history when they went from being a major label success to suddenly being completely independent. Matthew describes how this period of his life was completely music-focused as he worked at a record store and spent all of his time going to shows and writing songs. The low pressure situation that they found themselves in inspired a more diverse group of songs and a more relaxed feel to their recordings than ever before. From sprinting home to remember song ideas to obsessively listening to a Sony Sports Walkman to writing a song in an Amsterdam bathroom to Chris Walla's mixing skills to gratitude for recorded music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

We borrow some bdays from March 25th Elton John – And the Lone Ranger and Tonto return here for some additional hilarity. Aretha Franklin And the handsy Gloria Steinem Other earth-shattering topics discussed are: Norm thinking about giving a ‘warm-up’ bday for players to get the feel for the game and mere seconds later makes a decision on that. The ever-expanding DBG Rule Book which is up to 900 pages. We learn of an old, Colonial New England saying. Norm just may write a Bluegrass Opera sung with a Wisconsin accent. Which do you prefer: Beano or Bingo? Beans or Bings? How about NORMO? Maybe not because of two ‘O’s’’ Maybe NORMY? There is the sudden realization that this is what is airing on a 50,000 watt radio station. Jack does some math that pains Norm so greatly that blood stopped flowing to Norm’s fingers. Most importantly we gain some valuable insight into the prize closet where Norm gathers all the goodies for our winners. Then the consternation begins: Contestants suggesting that if Jack wins, he could ‘will’ the prizes to someone else. The protest continues with sections from the rule book being quoted but alas, Jack doesn’t get anything so there’s nothing to pass down. But that doesn’t prevent another attempt saying that the prize must go to the contestant calling the longest distance. And the show closes with what becomes a 50,000-watt Party Line! It’s madness…and Norm deftly regains control in the smoothest of fashions. Episode 79 – The Lady Doth Protest Too Much, begins in 3,2 and 1.

The city of Boston in 1976 was a busy musical town, as the debut album from the band Boston hit the airwaves and music store shelves. It was in this very same year that Ric Ocasek and The Cars came forward to produce a sound totally unlike Boston the band, focused on pop synth new wave experimentation that earned them millions of record sales, and eventually a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Ric Ocasek made a name for himself not only as a prolific singer and songwriter, but also as a producer for fellow new wave bands like Romeo Void and Suicide, and later, alternative rockers Weezer. He even began producing the 90s pop trio of brothers Hanson but was booted off the record for forbidding corporate presence in the studio while the brothers were recording. In 1984, the band produced one of their best pop songs of all time, Drive. During the video shoot, Ocasek met supermodel Paulina Porizkova on the set. They fell in love, got married in ’89, and had two boys. 1978 was a great year for the debut of the Cars, as they were named Best New Artist by both Rolling Stone and Creem Magazine. In 1979, they lost their Best New Artist Grammy award to one-hit wonder, A Taste of Honey. Anyone that has met Ric Ocasek might say he was a little bit off the wall. Perhaps that’s because his family life wasn’t exactly simple. Ocasek's father worked for NASA on Top secret projects. Ric recalled one time when government agents visited his house and questioned his mother about the dreams his father had at night. The band broke up in 1988 and Ocasek told reporters that a reunion would never happen. So, in 2005, surviving bandmates joined fellow 70s-rocker Todd Rundgren to form “The New Cars,” performing many of the Cars and Rundgren’s hits. The band toured in 2006, then disbanded shortly after, with the full Ocasek-led group reuniting in 2010 for a new album. But the reunion didn’t last long. The band toured for less than three weeks before calling it quits. The next time they appeared together occurred during the live and televised performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2018, when they played several of their biggest hits together. It turned out to be their last performance together, as Ric Ocasek died in 2019.

On Sunday, September 15th 2019, Ric Ocasek of The Cars passed away at his townhouse where he was recovering from surgery. This group was a staple of radio and video throughout the later 70's and 80's, and their album Heartbeat City propelled them to super-stardom both with the number of singles off the album and heavy video airplay on MTV.We covered The Cars' debut album on What the Riff?!? Ep. 28, but it seemed appropriate to make this group the first one we feature twice as a tribute to Ocasek and his work as front man of the group. We hope you enjoy this “Drive” down memory lane and keep Ocasek's family in your prayers.“Magic”This is one of the five single hits produced by this album. The video featured Ocasek "walking on water" in a pool at the Hilton estate. During the production, the Plexiglas used to facilitate the stunt cracked, dumping Ocasek in the water. “Looking for Love ”This deeper cut has a more New Wave feel. Ric Ocasek was the songwriter for The Cars.  “You Might Think”The funny and strange video for this cut is iconic, and beat out Michael Jackson's ultra-successful “Thriller” for MTV Video of the Year. “Heartbeat City”The title track received radio airplay as the B-side of “You Might Think” in the U.S., but was not actually released as a single. Who is Jackie, and what took her so long? ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The Theme from Friday the 13th” by Harry ManfrediniThis month saw the release of the fourth iteration of the Friday the 13th movies was called “The Final Chapter”... but obviously wasn't the end. STAFF PICKS:“99 Red Balloons” by NenaThis song had two versions, and English language version and a German version. The German version was surprisingly popular in America. The song itself tells the story of worldwide destruction from war initiated after mistaking 99 helium balloons for an aerial attack. “Balls to the Wall” by AcceptThe title of Wayne's heavy staff pick references the throttles on a jet fighter. Full throttle is pushing the ball at the top of the throttle all the way forward. It means going full out. Like Nena, Accept is also from Germany.“Rebel Yell” by Billy IdolThis title track from Idol's second studio album. Though the song is about a one-night stand, the title was inspired by a late night session Idol had with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ron Wood taking swigs from a bottle of Rebel Yell bourbon whiskey.“So You Ran” by Orion the HunterThis group was made up of two artists from the group Boston, and the lead vocalist would actually join Boston to handle lead vocal duties on Boston's fourth album “Walk On” in Brad Delp's absence. This album is kind of hard to find these days — and the song is not on iTunes. INSTRUMENTAL:“Drive” by the CarsWe finish off this week with an instrumental version of the biggest hit off “Heartbeat City.” This one was originally sung by Benjamin Orr (who died of pancreatic cancer in October of 2000) rather than Ocasek, but the voiceless version seemed appropriate. Rest in peace gentlemen, and thank you for the music!

First up this week we have a story about China influencing game studios to block any references to protests in Hong Kong. Obviously we weren’t approached, probably because of Buck’s rants. But this is kind of bad as it is enforcing the propaganda of a military regime. So please listen in and then go forth and show support for Hong Kong in its bid for democratic freedom from oppression. Viva la revolution!Next up we look at news of resorts and hotels being planned for space. That’s right, hotels in orbit! You will be able to play basketball in one if you are so inclined. There is even mention of accommodation available on the ISS for a price, but no airport transfers, sorry. So if you know anyone expecting a return visit from aliens and wanting to avoid those pesky immigration queues then this might be just the ticket. Then we look at the Emmy awards, particularly the creative side. They took place recently and there are some interesting winners to take a look at. There are the usual suspects that are to be expected, such as Game of Thrones, but also others such as “Age of Sail.” So take a look through the list and see who you like and also if there is something you like and we over looked it.As always we have the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events from this week in history. The fish — a relative of the shark that dates back 300 million years — live in deep water and are very rarely caught. Not wanting to waste it, he said he took the fish home and fried it up. Fahrenheit was born in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland), then a predominantly German-speaking Hanseatic city in the Pomeranian Voivodeship of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, but lived most of his life in the Dutch Republic (1701–1736) and was one of the notable figures in the Golden Age of Dutch science and technology. A pioneer of exact thermometry, he helped lay the foundations for the era of precision thermometry by inventing the mercury-in-glass thermometer (first practical, accurate thermometer) and Fahrenheit scale (first standardized temperature scale to be widely used). In other words, Fahrenheit's inventions ushered in the first revolution in the history of thermometry (branch of physics concerned with methods of temperature measurement). From the early 1710s until the beginnings of the electronic era, mercury-in-glass thermometers were among the most reliable and accurate thermometers ever invented. He died from mercury poisoning at the age of 50 in The Hague - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Gabriel_Fahrenheit16 Sept 2005 - Gordon Gould, American physicist who is widely, but not universally, credited with the invention of the laser (Others attribute the invention to Theodore Maiman). Gould is best known for his thirty-year fight with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to obtain patents for the laser and related technologies. He also fought with laser manufacturers in court battles to enforce the patents he subsequently did obtain. He died from natural causes at the age of 85 in New York City - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Gould15 Sept 2019 - Richard Theodore Otcasek known as Ric Ocasek, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and painter. He was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the rock band the Cars . In 2018, Ocasek was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Cars. That same year, he exhibited several his paintings in a national tour. He died from heart disease at the age of 75 in New York City - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ric_OcasekFamous Birthdays16 Sept 1875 - James Cash "J. C." Penney Jr., American businessman and entrepreneur who founded the J. C. Penney stores in 1902. In 1898, James Cash Penney began working for a small chain of stores in the western United States called the Golden Rule stores. In 1902, owners Guy Johnson and Thomas Callahan, impressed by his work ethic and salesmanship, offered him one-third partnership in a new store he would open. Penney invested $2,000 and moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming, to open a store there. President Trump says the U.S. is “locked and loaded” to respond to a weekend drone assault on Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure. His aides blamed the assault on Iran. The attack, which cut the kingdom’s oil production in half and sent crude prices spiking, led Trump to authorize the release of U.S. strategic reserves should they be necessary to stabilize markets. New York City police say there are no signs of foul play in the death of The Cars frontman Rick Ocasek. He found by officers Sunday afternoon in his Manhattan apartment. Ocasek was 75. The European Commission says it remains open to discussions with Britain to try and find a solution to the current Brexit impasse and is urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to come up with viable solutions. The European Union's executive arm said "such proposals have not yet been made" during Monday's working lunch between Johnson and the European Commission president.

“The Cars” by the Cars This was one of the first albums Rob bought after he got his first Stereo System. The Cars are from Boston and clearly evolved out of the NEW WAVE trend. Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr met in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1960s, and released this hit-filled debut album in June of 1978. It reached 18 on the Billboard Charts, and the band was rewarded by Rolling Stone Magazine fans as “Best New Artist” that same year. Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr take turns on vocals on these synthesizer-heavy tracks. The Cars was a name selected for because it was easy to spell, hard to forget, and appeared at the top of the alphabet, which made it an easy group to find in the record store. In April 2018, The Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we hope you enjoy these picks and “like the way she dips.” “Moving in Stereo” One of the coolest ways to use stereo, this song has an eerie quality to it, that you just can't ignore. Sung by bassist Benjamin Orr, you may remember it from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” as Judge Reinhold character’s dreams about Phoebe Cates’ removing her top. “Bye Bye Love” Originally performed, and recorded by Ocasek, Orr and Elliot in their first band, “Cap’n Swing,” this is Ocasek singning. “My Best Friend's Girlfriend” The band Nirvana actually performed “My Best Friend’s Girl” at their final concert on March 1, 1994 in Munich. “It’s All Mixed Up” Ric Ocasek’s “icy-cool” vocals garnered the attention of most fans, but Benjamin Orr’s voice adds a warm quality you can’t ignore. Keyboardest, Hawkes exchanged the keyboard for the SAX — the only one in the Cars’ library. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Diff'rent Strokes” by The Edwin Davids Jazz Band Gary Coleman's vehicle to fame was this family TV show. STAFF PICKS: “Hot Child in the City” by Nick Gilder and Time Machine Wayne shares this hit off Gilder's second solo album -- a popular one at the skating rink. The lyrics are much darker than they appear at first, as it focuses on exploitation of girls in what would come to be known as sex trafficking. “Baby Hold On” by Eddie Money This hit is from Eddie Money's self-titled debut album, and one of Brian's favorites. The album went to number 37 on the strength of this song and "Two Tickets to Paradise." “Kill the King” by Rainbow Bruce shares how Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore teamed up in this early heavy metal band. Blackmore tended to be a critic of the band members, and this would be Dio's last album with Rainbow before he went on to take over front man duties for Ozzy in Black Sabbath. “Imaginary Lover” by Atlanta Rythm Section “Imaginary Lover” is a 1978 hit single by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, the first release and greatest hit from their album Champagne Jam. If you play it at 45 Speed, it sounds like Stevie Nicks. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, “An FM station accidentally played the Atlanta Rhythm Section album cut “Imaginary Lover” at the wrong speed – 45. Favorable calls began to light up the switchboard, so the disc jockey let it play. Speeded up, the song sounded unmistakably like Fleetwood Mac, with Stevie Nicks warbling lead vocals.” “News quickly reached Nicks in Los Angeles. She rushed out to buy the record and played it at the wrong speed. “I got chills,” says Stevie. “It sounds exactly like something I’d sing, the way I’d sing it. I even played it for Christine [McVie], mixed in with some other demos for the new album. She complimented me on it.” LAUGH TRACK: “Feels So Good” by Chuck Mangione This popular jazz instrumental hit from the summer of 1978 takes us out for this What the Riff session.
