AI visual production is revolutionizing how independent artists create and present their work, and Steve Pasieka (Skulk the Hulking) is creating visual art at the forefront of this transformation. In this episode, Steve shares how he evolved from live performance art and noise rock to creating a multimedia project that seamlessly blends music, AI-generated visuals, and storytelling. We explore Steve's unique background in hardcore music and comedy improv, and how these seemingly different worlds inform his creative process. Steve discusses his pivot during the pandemic from live shows to digital content creation, including the development of his fictional video podcast and the birth of his visual art practice using AI tools. Whether you're intimidated by AI music production or curious about expanding your artistic reach beyond traditional music, Steve offers practical insights on incorporating new technologies while maintaining creative authenticity. He shares the specific AI tools he uses, the communities that helped him learn, and how he harnesses the quirks and obstacles of these technologies to fuel his creativity. This conversation provides valuable perspective for any independent artist looking to explore the intersection of music, technology, and multimedia storytelling in today's evolving creative landscape. Even being confronted with something that is weird or uncomfortable: it's character growth. You have to ask the question: why is this person doing this weird thing? It's a good exercise in empathy, to be perfectly honest. Why is this person doing this thing? Why does that make me uncomfortable? What, what is it about my perception that has shaped this experience for me? I feel like those are really essential questions for us to be constantly asking ourselves, especially in an age where there's a lot of discord, a lot of dissent and a lot of disagreement. And the better we understand ourselves, the better we're able to engage with humans who are different than us.My conversation with Meghan Moe Beitiks, assistant professor in theatre at Concordia University in Montreal. Meghan Moe is an artist and designer working with associations and disassociations of culture, nature and structure. Our mutual friend Ian Garrett thought we might get along. We did. Our conversation focused on Meghan Moe's Angles of Consequence project, a season of site-specific performances with Canadian performers to create work with reflected sunlight in key sites of climate advocacy and destruction in Québec. Meghan Moe and I had tea in Montreal. It was a very, enlightening, conversation. Show notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AI:Action pointsRecognize art's crucial role in processing emotions and spreading information during crises.Explore the use of reflected sunlight in art to highlight climate change issues.Support Indigenous resistance against fossil fuel expansion as an effective climate action.Consider the impact of positionality (literal and cultural) on our perspectives.Utilize resources like Canada Green Tools to calculate and reduce the carbon footprint of events.Story PreviewImagine art that dances with the sun, revealing hidden truths about our planet's climate crisis. It evolved into a series of site-specific performances addressing climate change in Québec, highlighting both the destructive forces of fossil fuels and the powerful resistance of Indigenous communities. The project aims to create an open-access guide, encouraging global engagement with sunlight performance art. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Selina Thompson: On Getting Braver and Other Durational Practices

Performance artist Selina Thompson's work exemplifies how working on oneself can be harnessed to change the world. Thompson began making autobiographical solo performances about stereotypically feminine concerns before moving on to political topics with a capital ‘P', e.g., racism and democracy, topics that “men write books about”, as she puts it. The first solo performance work of her still flourishing career was called Chewing the fat (2013) and addressed eating disorders; her next two, both made in 2015, were companion pieces, with Dark and Lovely focusing on the tribulations, joys and solidarity of Black hair styling, while Race Cards compiles thousands of questions on the topic of race. Subsequently, her most widely acclaimed and internationally toured piece, Salt (2016), reckons with her identity as a British post-colonial subject by recounting her endeavour to retrace the transatlantic slave trade route on a cargo ship. Her current work, Twine, arguably her most personal piece to date, is the show she previously vowed not to make because the subject matter, her own adoption, was too emotionally fraught to tackle. We discuss the continuities across these works: the defiance of shame, the channeling of anger, her commitment to durational research and development, and how all of the above have impacted her life, for better or worse. Selina Thompson (b. 1990, Birmingham) is an artist and writer whose work has been shown and praised nationally and internationally. Her practice is chiefly concerned with grief, love, and the world to come, and she seeks to make work that is visually striking, and lyrical, even while grounded in politics. She won the ISPA Distinguished artist award in 2023, and her credits, both with and outside of her company, Selina Thompson Ltd, include  BBC4, BBC Radio 3, The Royal Court Theatre, The Public Theater and BAM as well as theatres across the UK, Europe, South and North America and Australia.Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. Pippa Hudson speaks to Vanessa Carlon Valerio, Director at Verona’s Palazzo Maffei Museum, about a viral moment where careless tourists caused damage to Van Gogh’s Chair, a crystal-covered artwork, while posing for photos. Captured on video, the clip shows one tourist stumbling onto the chair, causing it to buckle, before fleeing the scene. Kratchanova discusses the aftermath, the museum’s police complaint, and the broader challenges of protecting fragile art in a selfie-obsessed era. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. You can order your own copy of the book Scansion In Psychoanalysis & Art: The Cut In Creation (Routledge) HERE: https://amzn.to/4jMubrj The book explores the intricate relationships between psychoanalysis and various art movements, particularly focusing on the avant-garde. The text is structured into several parts, each addressing significant themes and historical contexts that shaped both psychoanalysis and modern artistic expressions. Throughout the book, Sinclair employs the concept of scansion—a method of analyzing rhythm and structure—to draw parallels between artistic creation and psychoanalytic processes. She argues that both realms engage in a form of cutting or disruption that reveals underlying truths about human subjectivity. By focusing on fragmentation, the manuscript illustrates how both art and psychoanalysis seek to reconstitute identity and meaning in a world marked by chaos and change. In conclusion, Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art: the Cut in Creationpresents a comprehensive examination of the dynamic interplay between psychoanalysis and art movements, emphasizing the transformative power of disruption and the continuous quest for understanding the self in relation to the world. Sinclair's work invites readers to reconsider the significance of art as a vehicle for exploring the unconscious and the complexities of human experience. What can I do to support the grieving? There's so much to grieve. Whether we think about the crisis of climate, whether we think about the political crises, the issue of displacement, which is around the world. Forced displacement, such a huge crisis. How do we manifest the kinds of spaces that people need to be able to individually and collectively get in touch with how they're feeling and do it in such a way that opens the possibility for what you're talking about with the renewal, or, you know, a post traumatic growth, if you will. And in my experience, you can't get to that post traumatic growth until you actually sit with the emotions, however difficult they are.My conversation with interdisciplinary artist-researcher, educator, and community-engaged practitioner Devora Neumark and their 30 + years of contemplative practice most recently as a Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Fellow at the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg. This conversation was recorded on the unceded lands of the Algonquin-Ainishinaabe nation, in Ottawa, on February 21, 2025, while Devora was on their way back home to Iqaluit, Nunavut and spoke mostly about Displacement Codes, a collaboration with Karina Kesserwan, which centers around 13 prompts, adapted from AI-generated outputs, each designed to inspire reflection and performance-based responses to the lived experiences of displacement. Action pointsAcknowledge and sit with difficult emotions to facilitate post-traumatic growthEngage in contemplative practices, such as meditation, to regulate emotionsCollaborate across disciplines to broaden perspectives and create impactful changePrioritize understanding the present moment before planning for the futureReinforce community connections through dialogue and shared thinkingShow notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AIStory PreviewCan art help us process the overwhelming grief of climate change and displacement? This project, born from their Forced Migration and Refugee Studies at the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg fellowship in Germany, addresses the emotional toll of forced migration and climate change. By collaborating with Karina Kesserwan, a lawyer, Neumark bridges the gap between art and law, demonstrating the power of cross-disciplinary dialogue in addressing complex global issues. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Through immersion in the work of these artists and psychoanalytic ideas, participants will walk away with a better understanding of the transformative process inherent of the act of creation itself, especially when used as a powerful disruption of narrative, and hopefully feel inspired themselves to create! In this discussion, Vanessa gives a sneak peek into each of the four parts of the course. Some highlights are: talking about the inspiration for the course;outlining the events that led to the creation of psychoanalysis as well as the avant-garde movement;expanding on the historical backdrop – what was happening during these years that created this paradigm shift;looking at the years leading up to WW1, and what was taking place then, focusing on psychoanalysis and the avant-garde art scenes;focusing on surrealism and later developments in experimental film, followed by some discussion on the Beat Poets, and outlining how these three are interconnected;focusing on the birth of pop art, and art as it moved from the galleries to the streets, as well as performance art that included the body as an important vehicle/tool of expression. PROGRAM NOTES:Vanessa's website (with all links): Dr Vanessa SinclairMorbid Anatomy Course:The Cut in Creation: Exploring the Avant-Garde, Dada, Surrealism, Modern Art, Noise Music, and Performance Art through a Psychoanalytic Lens, Led by Vanessa Sinclair, PsyD, Begins May 25 — Morbid AnatomySelected Works:Amazon.com: Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art (Art, Creativity, and Psychoanalysis Book Series): 9780367567262: Sinclair, Vanessa: BooksAmazon.com: The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: 9781032603827: Sinclair, Vanessa, Punzi, Elisabeth, Sauer, Myriam: BooksPodcast Rendering Unconscious:Podcast – Dr Vanessa SinclairInstagram:InstagramRobert Frank, Me and My Brother (1968)Me and My Brother (1968) - IMDbMusic, Editing and Video Production: Stephanie Shea

What does it mean to commit to performance so fully that it transforms how you move through the world? Winnipeg artist Shawna Dempsey reveals in this week's episode how performance art can be a radical tool for change. Dempsey recalls the inspiration behind some of her and collaborator Lori Millan's iconic works like Lesbian National Parks and Services, where she and Millan became uniformed officials "protecting the lesbian wilds" while educating the public about the inherent queerness of nature. Their performances blended humour, authority, and subversion to create transformative encounters decades before mainstream acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities. Learn about a time in the not-so distant-past where donning a ranger uniform emblazoned with the word "lesbian" forced constant coming out in 1990s Canada – a time when queer people had few legal protections and homophobia was abound. Dempsey and Millan are still creating work, like Thunderhead,  Canada's new LGBTQ2+ monument commemorating victims of The Purge. The financial realities of life as a non-commercial artist pose a counterpoint to creative freedom, and Dempsey explores how she walks this tightrope. Despite international recognition and exhibiting at prestigious institutions like MoMA and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Dempsey remembers that sometimes the most they earned in a year was under $19,000 each while touring five months of the year. "Supporting oneself as an artist in Canada is very challenging, especially if you don't make anything saleable," she explains, detailing how they survived through teaching, writing, and "pretty much anything for $50."As co-executive director of Mentoring Artists for Women's Art (MAWA), Dempsey confronts the persistent inequality in visual arts, where women artists in Canada still earn only 70 cents for every dollar male artists make.  Aspiring artists will find wisdom in Dempsey's journey – from playing pretend as the famous artist "Miss Shawna from New York" as a child to creating groundbreaking feminist work that's changed lives. Her advice to artists? "Do it. What a wonderful way to live, because you get to go into the studio and think: what do I want to say today?"  Connect with us:Madison Beale, HostCroocial, ProductionBe a guest on The Artalogue Podcast

On this episode of the Scandalous Podcast, I sit down with the incredible Katerina Kiranos, aka Katacombs. We dive into everything from childhood memories and navigating relationships, to the cultural richness of traveling—especially our adventures in places like London and Greece. She opens up about confronting life's challenges, the strength she's found through the support of loved ones, and the powerful freedom that comes from breaking away from societal expectations—especially the pressure to always be "polite." Throughout our chat, we touch on the feminine experience in music, the evolution of her voice, and the confidence it takes to stay true to yourself in a world that often pushes conformity. She also shares what touring has taught her, the ongoing journey of self-acceptance, and what it means to find empowerment at every stage of life. It's raw, it's real, and of course—it's a little bit Scandalous.Follow @ScandalousOfficial

Emmalea Russo is here to discuss her ongoing course PSYCHO-COSMOS and the upcoming workshop we are hosting together DREAMS AS ART: Freud, Jung, Lacan In this discussion we dive into Emmalea's year-long class, "Psycho Cosmos," which explores the intersections of psychoanalysis, astrology, and art. The class features visuals, slides, and conversations, and has attracted a diverse group of artists, astrologers, and psychoanalysts. We highlight synchronicities, such as references to Freud's seminal dream “Irma's Injection” and Louise Bourgeois' spiders, and discuss the astrological significance of Neptune entering Aries. We discuss our upcoming workshop on Freud, Lacan, and Jung, and their relationship to art, where we'll explore dreams and life as creative expressions, and artworks as mirroring dreamwork. I also mention my upcoming classes on avant-garde art and psychoanalysis at Morbid Anatomy, and love for encouraging independent research and diverse perspectives. EMMALEA RUSSO is a writer. She is the author of four books of poetry and her first novel, Vivienne, was published in 2024. She has taught at various institutions including Saint Peters University, Northeastern University, The Melbourne School of Continental Philosophy, and GCAS. She teaches classes independently on art, literature, psychoanalysis, and the occult and works with clients online via her private astrology practice. https://emmalearusso.com/ Join Emmalea Russo and Vanessa Sinclair for a free-associative workshop exploring psychoanalysis as art.
