This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a production of Nation’s Restaurant News’ Last Bite Network, NRN editors Lisa Jennings, Holly Petre and Sam Oches enter the metaverse. McDonald’s and Panera both registered trademarks to enter the metaverse this week, joining the likes of companies such as Chipotle that have already begun experimenting in the metaverse. But that’s not all, there’s the difference between cryptocurrency to blockchain to the metaverse to NFTs (nonfungible tokens). Jennings explains the difference between them all and why it’s important. “Trillions of dollars are being traded in cryptocurrency…it’s a thing people have to understand,” Jennings said on the pod. “But it’s something you have to research as a restaurant company if you want to play this game.” Then, the team discusses Chipotle’s latest quarterly earnings where it was announced that average wages would be raised to $17 an hour — just one week after the NRN team discussed the thought of Chipotle raising wages on the podcast. How will the chain be paying for this increase, and how else is it helping stave off the labor crisis? Find out more in the episode. Plus, hear from Nick Marsh, CEO of Founders Table Group — owner of Chopt, Dos Toros and FieldTrip — about the group’s latest collaboration.

These days, it seems like all the food is going into bowls. Between Chipotle and Sweetgreen and Chopt and Cava and all of the other places that make mildly-to-egregiously-overpriced lunches for America’s millennial workforce, the focus appears to have shifted from the humble sandwich to salad bowls, burrito bowls, Mediterranean bowls, and on and on and on. Why is this happening? And, as we often ask, is it a good thing?MUSIC: “Me & My Dog” - boygeniusADDITIONAL MATERIAL: Patton Oswalt on KFC Famous Bowls (YouTube)
The best thing about a cleanse is ending the cleanse--and thankfully our Trump cleanse is over. This week, Rachel reveals how the Trump administration is blocking her efforts to gain German citizenship, and we explore the technological ineptitude of Paul Manafort’s legal team and Leonardo da Vinci’s unexpected involvement in the Mueller probe. Meanwhile, the New Year’s resolution crowd is wreaking havoc at Chopt and undermining the spirit of eating salads. Also: people are blindfolding themselves for the #BirdboxChallenge and staging confusing gummy bear concerts for the #HariboChallenge; Wikifeet gets to the bottom of an AOC podiatric Instagram mystery; Saudi Arabia develops push notifications to inform women that they are divorced; Martin Scorsese finds himself embroiled in a dumpling scandal; Ellen Degeneres inserts herself in the Oscars-hosting drama and Eric Trump’s Twitter feed; and a women’s sexual health company becomes the La La Land of CES.
