In this episode my guest is Tony Wasley, President of the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI).  We begin the episode talking about the Institute itself, what is does and when it was established. I am interested in the way that wildlife values are characterized, how they have changed, and how those changes in wildlife values potentially affect the future of hunting and hunters. Tony discusses the dichotomy between areas of focus for wildlife management agencies; the task of tag allocation and the broader responsibility for conversation.  Before turning our attention the "America's Wildlife Values Report" (what it is, what is it's purpose, and why hunters should care about the findings), Tony shares his views on what he sees are the main eras of the way that American society has impacted wildlife.  Tony tells us about the way American society can be broadly categorized by the way in which individuals relate to wildlife, and he outlines how people are distributed among the each of the categories. Tony then tells us how values have shifted over time, and he explains the underlying reasons for the shift in wildlife values. We talk about the main funding streams, and how people believe wildlife conservation programming should be funded. We spend some time discussing potential underlying causes for an apparent decline in hunting interest. We conclude the episode discussing those things that Tony believes are important factors driving support for hunting in the non-hunting population, and what he believes are the main threats to hunting today.

Jay shares his wildest experiences, including getting dragged by an unseen force in an old saloon basement, and witnessing objects moving on their own. What makes these encounters even more captivating is Jay's belief that these occurrences are manifestations of energy left behind, often triggered by human emotions and actions.  Could there be a connection between the energy we put out and the spirits we encounter? We explore the intriguing link between energy, spirits, and our own success in life. Join us in this hair-raising and thought-provoking episode as we venture into the world of Ghost Adventures and uncover the mysteries that surround us. You won't want to miss this spine tingling episode!  HIGHLIGHTS “My personal theory is that we're all made up of energy, right. And suppose the energy doesn't go away. So like, imagine you walk up and down the same hallway every day of your life, and then your body dies, it makes sense that a little bit of your energy might still linger and just kind of linger and move up and down that hallway.” "I think there's something that like watches out for us, there is something that like, kind of keeps things together in a way."  "It's a fascinating perspective that can extend beyond the realm of the supernatural and into our personal and professional lives." Congress passed the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses & Burros Act in 1971 when populations of these animals were declining. Back then, no one could have foreseen the problems we currently face 55 years later, as unchecked populations overrun the carrying capacity of the land and out-compete native wildlife (including wild bighorns) for forage and water. The law requires the BLM to protect and manage populations of horses and burros for the health of the landscape and these animals themselves, but it forbids multiple-use agencies from destroying healthy animals. That leaves us – the taxpayers and owners of the public land where most of these critters live – with conflicting rules and a whole lot of mouths to feed. The President's FY24 budget requested nearly $155 million of taxpayer dollars to employ and resource 239 full-time employees for horse and burro management. Most of that taxpayer money will be spent feeding the more than 60,000 animals still in long-term holding facilities. Current horse and burro policies are failing our public lands, our public wildlife, and the equids themselves. The time for change has come and passed. Sheep Fever asked those close to the situation to help explain why the law is being carried out as written, how bad things have gotten, and what can and should be done.

Welcome to an all-star Halloween episode of Ghost Magnet! Todays Guests are Jay Wasley and Aaron Goodwin from Ghost Adventures! We're going behind the screams of the Devil's Den episode of Ghost Adventures, The Goldfield Hotel haunted Disneyland and a whole lot more!! Aaron Goodwin, often referred to by many as a teddy bear, or Zak's bait of choice, Aaron actually hates to be left alone in attics (or just about anywhere). You can also expect to hear him say "dude!" about 20 times per episode. Always armed with a camera, Aaron travels around the world with the team to record what they experience in each haunted location.  Jay Wasley started his filmmaking career in Philadelphia, Pa. as a director of photography and audio engineer. Wasley joined Ghost Adventures in season 4 as the paranormal investigation team's sound mixer, and has since evolved into one of the show's audio/visual technicians and cinematographers. Throughout the series, Wasley travels with the team to domestic and international locations rumored to be haunted in search of evidence proving the existence of the supernatural. This is an extra long episode and I'm sure you're going to love it! Plus Lisa Morton with an all new Ghost Report! #GhostAdventures #DevilsDen #JayWasley #AaronGoodwin #HauntedMuseum #GoldfieldHotel #GhostMagnet #HauntedDisneyland

Our guest in this episode is architect Heather Wasley who is a registered architect and associate at Grieve Gillett Andersen in Adelaide. Heather started her role at GGA in December 2021 and most of the experience she talks about in this interview is from her time at Tectvs, where she worked for many years on a range of projects. Tectvs provided Heather with many opportunities to develop good working relationships with clients, something she strives to continue in her new role at Grieve Gillett Andersen. Heather shares her belief that the best architectural outcomes occur when an Architect is focused on understanding their clients and representing the best interests of a project, and that the client, the end-user and the wider public can all benefit from a productive relationship between a client and an Architect. This interview is conducted by Renata Gebara who is an EmAGN representative based in South Australia.

Today's episode is the first in a two-part series on rebooting your author career, featuring two authors who both have new releases, and who are both taking their careers in new directions with their two latest books. The first interview is with Sasha Wesley, and next week, I'll be speaking to Meredith Jaffé. Sasha is a West Australian author who had three books out a few years back in her Outback romance series: Dear Banjo, True Blue and Love Song. She also writes in the paranormal genre, under the pen name S.D. Wasley, for both adults and young adults. Last year Sasha published her first contemporary fiction title with Pantera Press, Spring Clean for the Peach Queen, and will soon be going into middle grade fiction. Sasha wears a lot of different writing hats, has a couple of pen names and a lot of diverse interests, including a new genre that she talks about at the end of this interview. In this interview Pam chats to Sasha about her new release, A Caravan Like a Canary, published last month by Pantera , as well as talking about the new direction in Sasha's author career and how that has come about. So grab a cuppa, sit back and I hope you enjoy this chat with Sasha Wasley on the Writes4Women Convo Couch.   SHOW NOTES: Writes4Women www.writes4women.com Facebook @writes4women Twitter / Instagram @w4wpodcast   W4W Patreon https://www.writes4women.com/support-us-on-patreon   Sasha Wasley Website: click here Facebook: click here Twitter: click here Instagram: click here Buy A Caravan Like a Canary  here   Pamela Cook www.pamelacook.com.au Facebook: click here Twitter: click here  Instagram: click here   This episode produced by Pamela Cook for Writes4Women.         Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/writes4women?fan_landing=true See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now, for the first time ever, the Cecil Hotel is allowing cameras inside for an investigation of ghostly proportions in the two-hour special, GHOST ADVENTURES: CECIL HOTEL, launching on Discovery, Inc.’s new discovery+ streaming service beginning Monday, January 4, 2021. In previous episodes we learnt that the Wasley family has a propensity to burp and fart A LOT, we arrived at that decision after my little brother Tom questioned our Mum about why we is all so gassy, it's a family trait. I should add it's a Wasley family trait, so it affects our Dad's side of the family, not so much my Mum's side of the family, my Mumma would want that to be mentioned because she hardly does either, but boy is she constantly surrounded by them. Anyway there's proof of my excessive burping presented in crystal clear crackling 90's cassette audio quality within this episode, as my former co-host and bestie Claire, aka The Vixen of the Vibes, joins me for another weeks worth of diary entries. It would seem I burped into a microphone a lot in the 90's...and even today. More on that within, plus there's more mother truckers and even some garbage truckers that are waking me up way too early. I’m also now nearly 9 months in to this gig and the 20 year old version of me thinks I should be getting waaaaay better on air shifts, so it’s time to put my big boy pants on, which will probably be Jagmen ones, and confront my boss Neville about it. We also have diary entries recording the arrival of the new announcer Dave, which inspires more bitching on my behalf over managements ineptitude, because of course it does. Plus there’s UFO sightings to deal with and I get offered another job, which I swiftly reject with typical teenage arrogance, apologies in advance to anyone who calls South or Port Hedland home for my sassy dismissals of those towns within this diary, let's just say my arrogance within it's pages, doesn't seem like it will be diminishing anytime soon, meh can't say I'm all that mad about it hehe.

Just like the movie 'Sixteen Candles' teenage me is totes the Molly Ringwald character in this episode of the podcast. The differences are I'm turning 20, I also don't have a crush on the high school senior, although maybe Bradley can take on that role, and instead of my parents forgetting my birthday and my grandparents visiting with a foreign exchange student compiled from hideous Hollywood movie racial stereotypes, I've got my Mum Anne and my little brother Tom visiting me in Karratha. Not only have they NOT forgotten my birthday, but they've actually travelling all the way to Karratha on a freaking BUS to help me celebrate it. As we heard in our previous episode, the Wasley family like dropping tummy shame on the regular (should acknowledge that tummy shame is just a pleasant way of saying farts, thanks to The Mighty Boosh, their Crack Fox, and my partner Geordie for introducing that magnificent show and wording to me hehe) thankfully none of that appears in this episode, except in this description. Coming up in this episode, my visiting family and I get numb bums travelling across the dirt roads of the Pilbara for a day trip to Harding Dam. Our road trip driver is a little loose behind the wheel, displaying erratic and gungho road skills that will leave me fearing for my completely self absorbed life. Speaking of being self absorbed, I'll do my self described best on air shift ever and then swiftly follow it up with an utter shit one just to bring myself back down to earth. There’s also my birthday to celebrate, which also includes a surprise b’day dinner at Jan's, although I'll ruin that by arriving before anyone else. I also have to come to terms with sending my little bro and mumma on that unbearable return bus trip to home to Adelaide, poor them, but huzzah for me, although there will be no me sitting on the bonnet of the high school senior's car sharing a kiss like Molly Ringwald did at the end of Sixteen Candles, I was probably too busy obsessing over myself to be bothered with anything like that anyway.

There's LOTS of things you learn about yourself by keeping a diary, especially one like mine, for instance, teenage me chose to record for future posterity that I just casually dropped my guts after falling asleep, whilst at the drive in, WITH my Mum, my little brother and my roomie, inside a small hatchback, IT'S A LOT TO PROCESS for me, how you feeling about it? This is a revelation I'd never have to relive if I hadn't kept this diary, I would have been lost to the wind, with all the other non eventful and totally forgotten bottom burps I've delivered so far. Thankfully I also recorded actual interesting information, like the arrival of my Mum Anne, and my little brother Tom. In 1989 they actually willingly climbed onto a bus to endure a journey all the way from Adelaide to Karratha, just so they could spend two weeks with me as I celebrated my 20th birthday, hectic AF. Once they get to town, we’ll do some touristy things together, watch a lot of television, and my depression kicks in again without any explains, but my mum will fix it with an early birthday surprise that turns my frown, into a less self absorbed resting bitch face probably. Obviously it would be stupid to work through all of those diary entries without my Mum and little brother, especially because they were actually there to endure some of it, luckily I managed to convince them both to a Group FaceTime to get this episode, and the next one done with their added thoughts and memories. Spoiler alert, none of us remember much, maybe it's a family trait. Speaking of family traits, that reference to my tummy shame in a confined vehicle, that also inspires a rather deep question from my brother Tom, and some equally flippant comments from my mother, so prepare for an insight into how the Wasley family works, or at the very least you'll learn how gassy we are.

My bestie MJ, aka Mary the 14 year old babysitter we first met in Episode 7, is back for another week of diary entries. She's returning to the podcast because on this week, back in 1989, she was doing work experience at my employer 6KA. While she's being diligent and focussed on a career, (so much so that I'll mention her devotion in a job reference I would write for her in the 90's, you'll get to hear that in this episode) anyway while she's all focussed and totes business, it would seem that teenage me's current obsession is whipping up CV's and trying to get a new job. The fact that I've only had this radio gig for 25 weeks isn't lost on me, but I think back then that was the vibe, you'd get your first regional job and then you'd work hard to move up the chain of radio stations, all the time trying to make your big move to one of the capital cities. For me that would end up taking three years, but in the meantime 19 year old me isn't really worthy of a new gig just yet. As if to prove that, I'll go on to deliver a bloody awful on air shift, mostly thanks to a hideous hangover. I’ll also reuse a lame joke in my diary again and talk myself and my talents up like only a teenager can do, as in without any proof, skill or clue, but thinking that teenage me is fully onto it. Plus I get my thespian on and go to the theatre and manage to meet another celebrity from the halls of Prisoner and Cell Block H fame, who knew so many of them would tour the Pilbara in 1989.

Mistakes Business Owners Make in Selling a Business

Pamela Wasley:           Hi, I’m Pamela Wasley. CEO of Cerius Executives. Cerius is one of the largest North American providers of contract executives of part-time, temporary, interim and consulting assignments. Cerius has a network of thousands of executives form operations, finance, sales, marketing, IT, engineering and human resources. These executives are available to step in the companies on short notice to fill a sudden gap, leadership, to run a key initiative or to provide specialized skills or knowledge for a temporary period of time. Cerius deals with thousands of CEO’s and over the past few years, more and more CEO’s have been telling us that they’re ready to sell the company. However, most don’t realize that they have to get a company ready for sale, and that they have many options when it comes to selling their businesses. Selling a company takes time and lots of preparation, as well as, picking the right partner to sell to. But today, we’ll be talking to four experts: an investment banker, a private equity partner, a CEO who sold his company to his employee- through an employee stock option program also known as an ESOP- and a strategic acquirer. All who can give advice to business owners considering selling their businesses in the next 1-3 years. What is some of the mistakes you see business owners make when they try to sell a company today? Steve LaRue:  Oh gosh. There’s probably four key things I’ve seen in my experience. The first and foremost is that you typically will find, especially sellers of smaller private businesses that they’re pennywise and dollar-foolish. They resist going out and hiring professionals to help themselves in the business. This is probably going to be the single most important financial transaction that a founder’s ever going to have, selling their business. So it’s really important to get professional advices and help them through the process. The second is and perhaps the most, the biggest reason why most deals in experience has failed is because of a sense of valuation by the small business owner. The founder doesn’t accept the unreasonable offer from a seller but also refuses to get a valuation resulting in an impasse [laughs]. I just had this experience, just last week trying to acquire a business and I’m talking to the founder and I finally, just had come straight out and say, “Help me understand, where you came up with this valuation number?” [Wasley laughs] And you get some really, really interesting processes that people go through to value their business. The third is that small businesses tend to have a lack of discipline and the buyer won’t do the necessary preparation in advance sales so sometimes small businesses for example don’t always follow business practices or principles, they have inadequate or improper documentation, and as a result of not having that cleaned up in advance of the sales process, that can result in either a delay or derailing of the transaction. Once the sales process starts, there’s really very little time for house cleaning and so you really need to get your house in order before you enter into the sales process. And then finally the selling process can be long and it requires a tremendous amount of commitment, prime commitment on the part of the founder and often the management team selling the company. And we found in some cases that the founders have either not have the necessary resources or willing to commit the necessary time to file the transaction all the way through to completion. Pamela Wasley:           Great thanks Steve, and Murray you’re not buying this that owner’s think that their companies worth a whole lot more than they, than you think it is. Are you? Murray Rudin:            [laughs] I tend to think a line. I tend to believe that, you know, we have as a firm pretty good idea of 30+ years of experience what the kinds of businesses we invest in are worth. Um, you know, in our view when somebody says, well I think it’s worth 50% more, you know, that’s great. If you can find somebody who will give you that valuation you should definitely take it because based on our experience that will be an extraordinary valuation and we want you to do the right thing for you. And if you get somebody to pay that, give you that kind of valuation today in cash, that’s wonderful. We’re really happy for you and you should grab that. Pamela Wasley:           [laughs] John, are you finding any other mistakes that companies are making today in selling their company? John:                            Yeah, well Steve said something I think is important and it’s what we call ‘deal fatigue’. It is a long process and at some point in this the owner gets, could get so wrapped up in the deal itself he neglects the business. And that’s one of the worst things that can happen is you’re right in the middle of selling your company, you’re starting to get into the final two months of due diligence and suddenly the growth slows down or there’s a dip in the backlog or things that come from taking the eye of the ball. And that’s always, always frustrating. One of the reasons people hire guys like us is so that they, we handle a lot of the transactional stuff so that they can keep the business going well. Um, I think the other big mistake is depth in management. Owners, entrepreneurs start a company and they build it and they know everything, they know every customer and how the product’s made and all the technology, and that’s great and it’s very satisfying to entrepreneurs. I’ve been one myself. But if you want to leave the company and go retire to a beach, you have to have someone who will run it after you. So owners really do need to identify and hire and groom a number 2 person who can step into the company and lead it forward. Sometimes owners think like I can’t spend a quarter million dollars to train a chief operating officer here, it’s too much money. But when in fact we package a company to sell it, that’s what we call it, an add-back. We would leave that person’s salary and take out the owner’s salary and say he’s there because he owns it not because he’s running the business. So it does not affect value from a math calculation standpoint and in fact enhances value because the buyer feels like he’s got an experienced manager to run the company once he owns it.
