On this week's program, we bring you some more highlights from the 2024 Environmental Justice Conference hosted by the West Jefferson County Community Task Force (WJCCTF) on Saturday, Oct. 19th, 9am - 3pm, at the University Club at the University of Louisville and online. Funding for this free public conference was provided by the Environmental Protection Agency RATHA Grant and the Louisville and Kentucky Branch of the NAACP. The Theme of this 8th Annual Conference was “Environmental Health: Knowledge Is Power.” Participants enjoyed a day of information with opportunities to ask questions concerning the three-year Rubbertown Air Toxics and Health Assessment (RATHA) research grant funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), learned about other topics of environmental interest, and participated in an Environmental Roundtable. The research partners for the RATHA grant include the West Jefferson County Community Task Force in collaboration with the Air Pollution Control District, the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute of UofL, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, and the Park DuValle Community Health Center. EJ Groups, Concerned Citizens, and Residents of West Louisville neighborhoods and areas near Rubbertown are encouraged to work together to address air toxics and their impact on our health. This week, we hear from two of the day's speakers: - Ann Hagan-Grigsby, retired CEO of Park DuValle Community Health Center - Keynote Speaker: "Barriers to Participation of At-Risk Groups in Clinical Research & Solutions: How Do We Address This?" Ready to learn the history, philosophy, and practice of an experienced professional in the test prep industry? MEET OUR GUEST Meet Kate Fisher, who grew up in Englewood, NJ, and graduated cum laude from Horace Mann School, where she remains an active part of the community and is a member of the Alumni Council. Private tutoring is not Kate's side hustle; rather, she deliberately chose to pursue it as a full-time career because she loves teaching and values cultivating genuine and impactful relationships with her students and their families beyond the boundaries so often required by traditional academic and classroom environments. Kate is an energetic and patient tutor (and cheerleader!) who is able to quickly and effectively accommodate her students' needs. Her tutoring is creative and adaptive, providing her students with the support and skills they need to achieve their goals. Kate has worked with thousands of students during her career as a full-time tutor, which she began as an undergraduate in 2008. As a part-time teacher at Kaplan Test Prep, she taught ACT, SAT, and SHSAT in both in-person and online classrooms. By 2010, Kate expanded her tutoring repertoire to include both the ISEE and SSAT, as well as various AP exams, SAT Subject Tests, and high school and college admissions consulting. She spent 2013 as a full-time instructor, teaching classes and tutoring students throughout the tristate area. In addition to training part-time tutors and developing teaching materials, Kate taught and tutored low-income students through her involvement in partnerships with the NYC Department of Education. In 2014, Kate was promoted to manager of content and curriculum, spearheading product and course revisions for the 2015 PSAT and 2016 SAT test changes. After returning to tutoring full-time, Kate joined an elite, boutique firm in 2016 and quickly became one of their most requested tutors. From 2020 to 2022, Kate joined the company full-time and was not only the top-grossing tutor but also served as Director of School Partnerships and trained other tutors to work with neurodiverse students. What we have learned from our pilot and when our next program is happening TL;DR: We are excited to announce the second round of our Research Training Program. This online program is designed to equip participants with the tools and skills needed to identify, compare, and recommend the most effective charities, interventions, and organisations. It is a full-time (35 hours per week), fully cost-covered program that will run remotely for 12 weeks. [APPLY HERE] Deadline for application: January 28, 2024. The program dates are April 15 - July 5, 2024. If you are progressing to the last stage of the application process you will receive a final decision by the 15th of March the latest. Please let us know if you need a decision before that date. What have we learned from our pilot? The theory of change for the Research Training Program has three outputs: helping train people to switch into impactful research positions, creating intervention reports that influence CE's decisions of which new organisations to start, and creating evaluations that help organisations have the most impact and funders to make impact maximising decisions. We have outlined what we have learned about each of these aspects below: Intervention reports: For eight out of the eleven weeks, the sixteen research fellows have investigated fifteen cause areas, created forty-six shallow reviews, and written twenty-two deep dives, five of which have already been published on the EA forum (find them here). Although we are planning some changes to improve the fellows' experience in the program, we are deeply impressed by these results and look forward to replicating them with a slightly different approach. People: Since the program ended only a couple of weeks ago, it is too early to tell what career switches will happen because of the program. We have some early and very promising results with two research fellows already having made career changes that we consider highly impactful. If you are currently hiring and are interested in people with intervention prioritisation skills applying, please contact us. Charity evaluations: Traditionally, Charity Entrepreneurship has focused most of its research on investigating the potential impact of interventions. We believe that more impact-focused accountability is essential for the sector, and we would like to support the evaluated organisations and funders in making more informed decisions. This is why at the end of the program the research fellows focused on writing charity evaluations in group projects. We were too confident in our timelines and are planning a major restructuring of this part of the program. However, we are happy that three evaluations could be shared directly with the evaluated organisations. We are looking forward to learning from other evaluators in the space. What will the next program look like? Content: The program will start with a week of providing an overview of the most important research skills. The program's first part will then focus on writing cause area reports in groups in which fellows take a problem and identify the most promising solutions. Afterwards, the fellows investigate those most promising ideas through a shallow review. After conducting a shallow review, research fellows will evaluate the most promising interventions through a deep dive, which will be polished and published, and influence decision-making within Charity Entrepreneurship and beyond. After these reports are published, there will be some time to think about careers and apply to different opportunities, before jumping into some charity evaluations that can influence the decisions of funders as well as strategic decisions within the evaluated o...

Now we are piloting a third - a Research Training Program, which will tackle a different problem.    The Problem:People: Many individuals are eager to enter research careers, level up their current knowledge and skills from junior to senior, or simply make their existing skills more applicable to work within EA frameworks/organizations. At the same time, research organizations have trouble filling a senior-level researcher talent gap. There is a scarcity of specific training opportunities for the niche skills required, such as intervention prioritization and cost-effectiveness analyses, which are hard to learn through traditional avenues. Ideas:  A lack of capacity for exhaustive investigation means there is a multitude of potentially impactful intervention ideas that remain unexplored. There may be great ideas being missed, as with limited time, we will only get to the most obvious solutions that other people are likely to have thought of as well. Evaluation: Unlike the for-profit sector, the nonprofit sector lacks clear metrics for assessing an organization's actual impact. External evaluations can help nonprofits evaluate and reorganize their own effectiveness and also allow funders to choose the highest impact opportunities available to them- potentially unlocking more funding (sometimes limited by lack of public external evaluation). At the same time, research organizations have trouble filling a senior-level researcher talent gap. There is a scarcity of specific training opportunities for the niche skills required, such as intervention prioritization and cost-effectiveness analyses, which are hard to learn through traditional avenues. Ideas: A lack of capacity for exhaustive investigation means there is a multitude of potentially impactful intervention ideas that remain unexplored. There may be great ideas being missed, as with limited time, we will only get to the most obvious solutions that other people are likely to have thought of as well. Evaluation: Unlike the for-profit sector, the nonprofit sector lacks clear metrics for assessing an organization's actual impact. External evaluations can help nonprofits evaluate and reorganize their own effectiveness and also allow funders to choose the highest impact opportunities available to them- potentially unlocking more funding (sometimes limited by lack of public external evaluation). There are some great organizations that carry out evaluations (e.g., GiveWell), but they are constrained by capacity and have limited scope; this results in several potentially worthwhile organizations remaining unassessed. University College Cork (UCC) has recognised Dell Technologies for its contribution to the education, research, and development of electronic engineers. The donation of high-end computing and data storage equipment enables UCC's Embedded Systems research group in the School of Engineering and Architecture to rapidly accelerate research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Dell's support for UCC has contributed to ground-breaking research activity in AI, specifically its application in medicine and cyber security. The digital equipment has also been an accelerant for financial mathematics, circuit design and IoT for environmental monitoring. A successful pilot programme that has seen over 8,000 students in over 100 secondary schools across Ireland learn about machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) is set to be expanded in the coming school year. The pilot programme, which was rolled out to schools right across the country in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Kildare, is the first of its kind and has been marked as a huge success after its debut year. Students experienced a fully immersive experience into the technologies that are giving the world self-driving cars, and manufacturing robots, and they learned about the jobs of the future. Machine learning and artificial intelligence programme to be expanded in Irish schools With the support of Huawei Ireland, the programme was developed by Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning (ML-Labs) based at University College Dublin (UCD) and Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). The programme was delivered via CSinc, a national research group based in TU Dublin and has ambitions to be rolled out again for the academic year 2022/2023 via the online learning platform CSLINC. The AI And ML module was developed by Joyce Mahon, an ML-Labs PhD student at UCD supervised by Brett Becker and Brian Mac Namee. Speaking about the programme, Vera Leader, Principal of Boherbue Comprehensive School in Cork, which saw 25 transition year students take part in the programme this year, said: “Our school is in a rural area so computers and engineering are high on the local agenda – but this programme has opened our students' eyes even more to the possibilities for artificial intelligence and machine learning. It has also challenged students in their thinking about what to study in the 5th and 6th year and whether they should consider studying STEM subjects in college – this wouldn't have happened without the programme. The structure of the programme meant that it was designed with both students and teachers in mind – so it has been very progressive and we look forward to offering the programme to students again next year.” Michael Moynihan, TD for Cork North-West, said: “This course's approach has helped students gain great insight into how AI actually works, to demystify and remove barriers to more advanced learning, and to emphasize the important roles of ethics and bias in AI. I'm delighted the Boherbue students have got such value from the module and I applaud Huawei Ireland and ML-Lab's work in this area and intention to expand the course in the coming school year.” Module Projects The module contains lesson plans, presentations, videos, classwork, homework and solutions for teachers. In addition, code and accompanying instructional materials are provided, to introduce various machine learning algorithms if the teacher desires a more technical approach, with minimal setup, no specific software requirements, and no cost to participate. Classes can be adapted by teachers to support diverse student groups, and the course authors recognize that for some students this might be their first-time exploring issues relating to algorithms and data. Students who successfully complete the course receive a Certificate of Completion from the TU Dublin research group. Speaking about doing the course in Boherbue, transition year student, Charlotte Murphy, said: “This programme has been a great experience for me, and didn't require any previous knowledge of coding so allowed me to get a grasp of the basics of AI and machine learning very quickly. It gave me a fresh perspective on the digital area and the relevance of STEM courses to the future world of technology. Dr. Alice Kuo is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and of Health Policy and Management in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She is also the Chief of the Medicine-Pediatrics Section and Director of the Medicine-Pediatrics Comprehensive Care Center. Her research interests are mainly in early childhood, and she has published in the areas of developmental screening and services, early literacy practices, cognitive and language development in young minority children, hearing screening in early childhood, services for children with autism, and mental health services for children. In addition to her research, Dr. Kuo is heavily involved in educational programs at many levels, from high school to post-graduate fellows. As the co-director of the Training Core for the NHLBI-funded Center for Population Health and Health Disparities, she works with disadvantaged high school students in East Los Angeles, focusing on reduction of cardiovascular risk factors, community capacity-building and career mentoring. She is the Director of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB)-funded Pathways for Students into Health Professions for disadvantaged undergraduate students interested in public health and health professional careers. She also teaches the Foundations of Maternal and Child Health course at the UCLA School of Public Health each year. In October 2012, Dr. Kuo joined the NICHD-funded Center for Autism Research and Treatment as its Director of Research Training and Education. In September 2020 she was named as the Project Investigator of the Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health, a multi-organizational network dedicated to improving health outcomes of autistic individuals. At the David Geffen School of Medicine, she is Director of the Systems of Care Pathway, a longitudinal program for medical students to learn about the intersection of health care systems and clinical practice. At the post-graduate level, Dr. Kuo is the Program Director of the UCLA Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program. At the national level, Dr. Kuo is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Community Pediatrics in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). She was the co-chair of the Community Pediatrics Training Initiative Program Advisory Committee at the AAP from 2005-20008. She was the co-chair of the Advocacy Training Special Interest Group in the Academic Pediatrics Association (APA) from 2004-2007, and Region Co-Chair of the APA from 2007-2010. Clinically, Dr. Kuo sees primary care patients at the Medicine-Pediatrics Comprehensive Care Center in Santa Monica, the first ambulatory practice at UCLA with extended hours in the evenings and on weekends and holidays. This week's guest is Dr Brandon Birckhead, MD, who is a project scientist working on VR clinical trials at Cedars-Sinai. He is currently running the Digital Pain Reduction Kit study which is assessing the use of virtual reality therapy in those with musculoskeletal injury. This will be one of the largest randomized control trials within VR pain reduction research. He is also the co-director of the Virtual Medicine Conference along with Dr. Brennan Spiegel the founder of the event. One of the largest immersive technology conferences focused specifically on its use in healthcare. In VR education, Brandon has collaborated with radiation oncologists at Moffitt Cancer Center to assess its use in medical education. While at the Medical College of Wisconsin he designed a VR breast cancer education program to help patients understand radiation treatment and why it is of use for their cancer. He then designed a pilot study which has garnered 40K of funding from the NCI. A century ago—at the height of World War I—history’s most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. The disease claimed more lives in twenty-four weeks than AIDS has claimed in thirty-seven years, and more than the Black Death killed in a century.
