Episode 4 - Murdock and Marvel: 1966 1966 saw America sink even deeper into Vietnam, with war deaths tripling from 1965 to 1966, Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California, and the first artificial heart surgery was performed.  It was a big year in American pop culture as well, with both Star Trek and the Batman TV show debuting and the Beach Boys releasing their “Pet Sounds” album.  On the Daredevil front, our hero entered his first full publication year, with a full 12 issues for Duane to revel in!  Preshow Our first No Prize award Moon Knight Back Catalog The Year in Comics New Comics, Creators & Characters Big Moments Best Selling Books... and Marvels The Year in Marvel Starts and Ends New Characters Big Moments Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Jim Steranko The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil Issues 12-23, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 and Amazing Spider-Man #43  New Artist for books 12-19: John Romita Sr.   New Artist for books 20-23: Gene Colan   More multiple book story arcs this year.   Murdock leaves New York via a Cruise that gets boarded by Pirates and is kidnapped to the Savage Lands where he befriends Ka-Zar and Zabu   Referenced DD and Spider-Man's first teamup in Spider-Man #16 during issue 15   Foggy decides to impersonate Daredevil to impress Karen. Hilarity ensues.    Interesting Note on Issue 18 “There Shall Come a Gladiator”. Stan Lee only wrote the first 7 pages of this book with “Dandy Denny O'Neil” to finish the story because Stan had to leave for vacation.  Matt Murdock is abducted by the Owl and brought to his island hideout to defend a Judge who previously sent him to Prison. As Daredevil, he saves the Judge and flies them both off the island just as its volcano erupts.  Murdock decides he's going to tell Karen how he feels about her. Even if it means it hurts Foggy. Though that never actually happens before the year ends.  Daredevil finishes off the year with a final battle with recurring villains The Masked Marauder and the Gladiator.  New Powers, Toys or Places This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil Issues #22 November 1966 “The Tri-Man Lives!” and #23 December 1966 “DD Goes Wild!”  Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Batmania and Endgame. The dangers of getting too big into pop culture. Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil Haley and Kim Sorrelle interview Jesse Hutch. Jesse Hutch was born in the same location as the Marvel hero Wolverine. This could be nothing more then a fun fact, however, it does not excuse why Mr. Hutch is immune to Tylenol and Novocaine(most commonly used in dental practice). He drowned when he was 19 years old. Fell from a 25 foot rock quarry while free climbing in high school. Had his stomach cut open by a barbed wire fence when he was 10, and he moved across the country(solo) when he was 21 to pursue acting. This was the first time he was ever on an airplane. Now, after 22 years of being an actor, Jesse Hutch says he is still working on his: "22 year overnight success story". You may have seen him in classics such as Freddy vs Jason or The Butterfly Effect. Maybe you saw him in the 60's as Jimmy Riley on Dick Clark's American Bandstand(American Dreams). Dark Angel, Kyle XY, Smallville, Arrow, Almost Human, Supernatural, Batwoman and Project Blue Book are but a few of his television roles. Keep an eye out for his latest roles, one being "Savage Lands", an historical fiction about Davey Crockett, Jesse plays the villain known as spike. Now over to the romantic comedy zone Jesse stars in "B&B Merry" along side actress Jen Lilly. The list goes on with Supernatural, Wu Assassins and Coffee & Kareem(theatrical release). Mr. Hutch recently Directed, wrote and acted in a proof of concept for a new television series he's developing. When asked what his best role has been to date, his response: "My best role of all time is that of husband and father. I believe that giving your life for others is one of the greatest gifts you can strive for. Turns out this is also the best acting class you will ever take...life".

Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are currently watching, commentary and analysis of NBC Peacock’s Brave New World, and our listener feedback.  This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss the season finale which explores the after effects of the Epsilon rebellion that John inadvertently starts. How much culpability does the savage enjoy in this matter, and how will he integrate into the new world that Lenina has been tasked to develop. Of course, the biggest mystery involves the box that Bernard and Helm take to the Savage Lands and how much control Indra still holds over both worlds. In our What We're Watching segment, Dave reminds viewers that the Netflix horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor will drop on October 9, and Wayne has good things to say about the Emmy award winning series Ozark. In Listener Feedback, Fred from the Netherlands wonders whether John really had any choice about whether or not to distance himself from the Epsilon rebellion. Fonseca talks with actor Sean Whalen is an American actor and writer. He is known for his work in numerous TV shows, including Shannon's Deal and Grace Under Fire, as well as movies, including The People Under the Stairs and Doppelganger. He is also known for appearing as a hapless history buff in the first commercial of "Got Milk?", directed by Michael Bay, which aired in 1993. Superman is one of DC’s strongest heroes, and can be a thorn in the side for any comic book or screenwriter who tackles him. That’s mainly because he’s super hard to defeat, so much so that ensemble features typically have to burden him with one specific task to prevent the reader to ask why he doesn’t just do everything the rest of the team is working on. Superman has had his troubles in the DC Universe, though I believe he’d struggle much more with a solid number of Marvel villains. There are some Marvel villains that would easily crush Superman in a fight. With that being said, I’m not just going to rattle off the strongest villains that would vaporize the Man of Steel on sight. Instead, I’m taking things down a few levels and presenting some options that could be defeated by Superman, but would overall be at an advantage against him. Long story short, don’t expect Onslaught or Franklin Richards, but this list may have some touches of cosmic strength as one works their way down. Dark Phoenix Marvel Dark Phoenix As demonstrated in Dark Phoenix, the Phoenix force is among the strongest entities in the X-Men universe. Through Jean Grey, it allows for psychic and telekinetic abilities that are off the charts in terms of strength. The only real way to defeat Dark Phoenix is to get through to the real Jean, who Superman doesn’t know. immune to the effects of telepaths. This Marvel villain would be able to dominate the mind of Superman with little to no effort, and he’d be bent to her will and ultimately defeated in whatever way she chose from there. As long as Dark Phoenix didn’t try to make Supes a puppet to do her bidding and buy him time for the real Jean to intervene, I’d say this battle would come to an end rather easily. Doctor Doom Marvel Doctor Doom Doctor Doom isn’t just one of the greatest Marvel villains ever conceived, he’s also a formidable foe for nearly any hero. This includes Superman, who could easily overpower Doom when it comes to brute strength, but is outmatched when it comes to matters of the mind. Doom would certainly find a way to create or find kryptonite to weaken the hero, and drastically lower the gap of strength between them. Beyond being intellectually superior, Doctor Doom is one of the more magically proficient Marvel villains out there. Superman is invulnerable to many things, but magic is notoriously one of the things he struggles a great deal with. Provided Doom could prevent the physical power of Superman, he could easily subdue him with plenty of magic and some advance planning. If the two were to just meet on the street randomly, however, it’d really come down to how Doom learned Supes’ weakness, and if he could exploit it before Superman took a shot. Loki Marvel Loki The god of mischief Loki may not be a physical threat to Superman in any way, but he does have the standard durability of an Asgardian. That alone allowed him to take a thrashing from Hulk in The Avengers, and while it didn’t look like it tickled, it was shown he walked away from the encounter in Avengers: Endgame with seemingly little to no long term damage. That’s impressive, not to mention a little intimidating. Much like Doctor Doom, Loki is one of the notable powerful magic users of the Marvel universe. His command of magic combined with his ability to keep Superman adequately confused with his vast array of tricks, I don’t see any scenario where Superman would easily defeat Loki on his own. With the full power of the Justice League he may get it done faster than The Avengers did, but that’s not what this list is about. Venomsaurus Rex Marvel Venomsaurus Rex The MCU has come a long way in elevating the quality of superhero movies, but even now, there are some things that can only be done in the comics. Case in point, we have Venomsaurus Rex, who was first conceived during the Old Man Logan comic run. This is essentially a Tyrannosaurus Rex from the Savage Lands that had eaten a symbiote chasing Logan and Clint Barton. It’s still a T-Rex, though everything about it is enhanced due to it also being inhabited by the Venom symbiote. The Marvel villain would be one tough nut to crack for Superman, for various reasons. To start, it’s a freaking dinosaur, and while it can’t throw a punch, that symbiote ability will allow it to do a bunch of things a typical dinosaur couldn’t. Also, let’s not forget the symbiote itself would see a superior foe in Superman, and try to attach itself accordingly. Even if the T-Rex itself was killed, I’d have to think the symbiote attaching to Superman and corrupting him would be a definitive win for Marvel villains everywhere. Electro Marvel Electro I’ll be the first to admit this is a dicey option. Again though, I’m looking for villains that would give Superman a run for his money, not necessarily Marvel villains that would demolish him immediately. Even still, the iconic Spider-Man villain Electro is a long shot, but under the right circumstances he could take Superman to the limit, and maybe even defeat him in a one on one battle. While it isn’t always true of the character, Superman has been shown to be sensitive to electricity. Provided this is the case in a battle with Electro, that’s a trump card that the villain can go to again and again to exploit against Superman. With that said, even Superman is frequently shown to overcome insurmountable odds, so I could definitely see him overcoming Electro through some planning eventually. Electro would have to strike fast and keep the pressure on, and if he did that, I think he’d pull out the win. Juggernaut Marvel Juggernaut With the power of Cyttorak flowing through him, Juggernaut is a powerhouse. His strength is limitless, he’s physically invulnerable, and nigh-impossible to stop physically when he gains momentum. He’s one of the stronger people in the Marvel universe, but still below as powerful as the Marvel strength chart can go. Not counting Gods though, it took Hulk being enhanced as a Horseman of Apocalypse with Celestial technology to physically stop Juggernaut in motion. In layman’s terms, it took a hell of a lot power to make that happen. Superman would not be able to physically stop Juggernaut without some modifications of his own. Even though, the mystical power of Cyttorak is a form of magical ability, which would feasibly mean that merely getting struck by Juggernaut would injure Superman greatly. The best Superman could hope for is to outsmart or fool Juggernaut into some trap, though I don’t see a situation where the Man of Steel could effectively overcome this Marvel villain.

Savages: Chronicles of Warshard by Katherine Bogle. https://www.amazon.com/Savages-Chronicles-Warshard-Katherine-Bogle-ebook/dp/B06XG5KJMT/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6WYYW82F41EZRX1CF6TB It currently has 18 reviews with an average of 4.1 star rating. It was published on April 4th of 2017. I saw this the week before, advertised on Twitter. The blurb and book cover caught my attention, so I preordered it for 99 cents. Two weeks after it's release it is sitting at 12K odd in the Kindle store and at #5 for Teen & Young Adult > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Historical   Katherine Bogle's debut young adult novel, Haven, came second in the World's Best Story contest 2015. She currently resides in Saint John, New Brunswick with her partner in crime, and plethora of cats. She can be found at www.katherinebogle.com. Haven is a Chonicle of Warshard book as well as another one called Fyre which is a collection of short stories in the same environment. Here's the story description on the amazon page. Daughter of Chief Ruin, Breen is one of the most fearsome warriors in the Southern Delica Tribe, but nothing can stop the Emperor from reaping the Savage Lands for soldiers. When her village is attacked, Breen is taken from her home and her family to the Seaburn Academy, where southern savages are broken and chained into a life of service to the Empire. Through the beatings and torture, Drakkone, one of the few Seaburn-born soldiers, brings solace to her days and gives her hope for the future. Once freed of the Academy dungeons, Breen is sentenced to daily training between her plots for escape. But one night of unexpected passion turns into a problem bigger than either of them could have imagined. Breen and Drakkone must risk capture and flee the city or death might be a blessing compared to eternal imprisonment. The blurb has left me a little confused. It sounds to me like Drakkone is a Seaburn solder who beats and tortures Breen and by doing so, brings her solace and gives her hope. Then free of the Academy, though she is sentenced to daily training, she has an affair with someone, who we assume is Krakkone. This leaves me wondering, was he also a prisoner and in a position to become romantic with Breen, or was he still in a position of authority over her. The Amazon preview has the first two full chapters and part of the third. I am going to read the first chapter which equaled 5% of the book. Here is Chapter 1:   (After the Chapter) I thought the first chapter was well written. It's fast paced, gives us a feel for Breen's talents and the people of the Southern Delica Tribe, and sets us up with a conflict to carry us into the second chapter. The description copy tells us there is a lot of action to look forward to and at this point I am will to read on to see how she will become imprisoned and what she will do to try to escape. The blurb mentions torture. I'm not big on torture, especially if it gets graphic or just too long winded. In the 1990's there was a series of books by Terry Goodkind that started with "Wizards first rule". I read that and several that came after it and it seemed that in each of these massive epic fantasies, the protagonist couldn't help but get caught and tortured for a couple hundred pages. It went on and on in intricate detail. If this book gets hung up on that kind of plot, I would have to give it up. That aside, the only thing I found that took me out of the story was some ambiguity about who was talking. At times pronouns were used and it wouldn't be until the following paragraph that I would know who it was who had spoken. So, overall, this is a good book and you probably should give it, or one of the author's other books a try. Thanks for listening and I'll see you next week.
