On this episode of The Scoop, Bittrex Global CEO Stephen Stonberg joined host Frank Chaparro for a discussion on Bittrex's US and global businesses, his outlook on security tokens, and how the company is tackling regulatory tightening in an effort to safely enter markets across the world. In its global business, Stonberg said that Bittrex is testing out lending and staking products as well as dipping its toes into STOs or Security Token Offerings, such as in real estate, stocks, cars, etc. Bittrex test-launched a limited number of what Stonberg termed ‘unsolicited ETFs' like "Google tokenized and Tesla tokenized" which they are currently only selling to a small subset of clients via their Bermuda license. As the market matures and investors eventually look for yield in alternative products outside of utility tokens, Bittrex is positioning itself to capture that market share. “I would expect that as utility tokens become a more mature market, that you won't see those types of returns," said Stonberg. Stonberg views real estate on the blockchain as one of the use cases that will reshape the industry. In fact, Bittrex is exploring the potential of STO-based tokens, such as in real estate as well as possibly art and IPOs, as Stonberg suggested. “I really think that you're going to see everything being tokenized. Why should we not have real estate tokenized? Like, why should if you're IPOing a company, why does it have to be an IPO? Why can't it be in the venture stage?” As for where competitors are in the adoption cycle, Stonberg added: "Right now, we're in the fund build phase where the regulators haven't caught on yet." However, he did not comment on whether Bittrex has plans at this time to fundraise or enter public markets. Republic is an investment platform that allows anyone pretty much anywhere in the world, of any income and net worth, to invest in some of the best private equity startups. It allows regular people, not just a few wealthy accredited investors, to invest in highly vetted private startups, with as little as $10 or as much as $100,000 per investment.In the past, accredited investors were the only ones allowed to invest in startups through equity-based incentives. However the JOBS Act of 2016 created an exemption under the federal securities laws so that crowdfunding can be used to offer and sell securities to the general public. Republic launched just after the JOBS Act was passed with a goal to create an investment platform which was truly accessible to everyone. This was around the time that companies began raising funds with ICOs, and Republic was among the first platforms to offer a framework for Security Token Offerings.Republic has recently innovated again with their Republic Note product. This is a profit sharing token which allows investors to receive dividends when companies who raise money on the platform make an exit. The tokens are issued by Republic which distributes a portion of the exit profits to investors in proportion to their holdings. Als gelernter Banker dachte der heutige Chef der Immobiliengesellschaft Brickmark: "Das schaust du dir mal genauer an." Gekauft habe er nicht, fügt Rind schnell hinzu. Die Blockchain-Technologie aber lässt ihn seitdem nicht mehr los. Weil er mit der Colonia Real Estate schon früher in seiner Karriere eine börsennotierte Immobiliengesellschaft geführt hatte, lag die Idee nahe, Immobilien auf die Blockchain bringen, damit Anleger investieren können. Zwölf bis 18 Monate habe die Vorbereitung gedauert. Immerhin musste nicht nur die technische Seite geklärt werden. Auch eine Immobilie samt Verkäufer musste gefunden werden: "Unser Anspruch war es, eine Transaktion zu schaffen, die auch Leuchtturm-Charakter hat", erklärt Rind. Das hat er mit seinem Team geschafft. Mit 130 Millionen Franken hat die im schweizerischen Zug ansässige Firma Brickmark den weltweit größten Immobilienkauf in Token realisiert: in der Züricher Bahnhofstraße. Noch können private Anleger zwar nicht investieren, die Nachfrage sei aber jetzt schon groß: "Das war keine Welle, das war schon ein Tsunami", scherzt Stephan Rind. Doch noch muss er die potenziellen Privatanleger vertrösten.  Denn das Konzept hinter dem Vorhaben ist ein STO, ein Security Token Offering. Frei übersetzt handelt es sich dabei um ein digitales Wertpapier, das Anleger erwerben können. Dafür muss Brickmark noch einen Prospekt ausfertigen und diesen einer Aufsichtsbehörde in Europa vorlegen: "Dann haben wir erst die Zulassung", erklärt der Manager. Sobald das der Fall sei, könnten Anleger aber richtig profitieren. Brickmark verspricht das Beste aus den unterschiedlichen Anlagewelten: Man biete die Vorteile einer Anleihe, gleichzeitig stünden den Anlegern aber Dividenden- und Zinsausschüttungen zu. Michael Oh is a Lecturer at the Walton College of Business at University of Arkansas and taught the College's inaugural course on cryptocurrencies. (www.patreos.com) He is a faculty advisor to the University's Blockchain Center of Excellence. Previous to entering the cryptocurrency field, Michael was an emerging market sovereign debt and currency investor at T. He has worked in other international policy and finance settings, for example at the Asian Development Bank and ExxonMobil.
