In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Duncan Forrester.Duncan is a globally experienced Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and consultant who's worked with many of the automotive industry's most famous brands. He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. My friend Paul Kirby is a musical polymath: a tenor of excellence who performs throughout the world as both a soloist and as a valued member in small vocal ensembles; he is also a killer banjo player and bluegrass singer, and a member of the Norwegian group Stemmespesialisten that combines voice lessons, voice massage and coaching. In addition he has worked as a musical administrator and is a Timani teacher in training: an education that focuses on in-depth anatomical knowledge in order to enhance movement and playing for musicians. He has also been a valued and trusted friend of mine for the past twenty years, and was a major encouragement and support when I was putting Countemelody on its feet. For his favorite episode of the podcast, Paul has chosen the Fourth of July episode I posted in 2021. In this episode I bring you a gorgeous conglomeration of great baritones and bass-baritones performing songs by the emblematic American composer Charles Ives. In this episode we hear thirty of his songs which display a wide range of compositional, musical, and literary styles. Some of the greatest Ives interpreters are represented here, including Thomas Stewart, Samuel Ramey, Donald Gramm, Sanford Sylvan, Kurt Ollmann, Gerald Finley, William Sharp, and William Parker, accompanied by Alan Mandel, Dalton Baldwin, Alan Feinberg, Warren Jones, Steven Blier, Craig Rutenberg, and others. I finish the program with Jerry Hadley performing that most celebratory of Ives's songs, “The Circus Band.” Since this episode was first posted I have gone on to produce full episodes on Donald Gramm, William Parker, and Jerry Hadley. Thanks, Paul, for your support, encouragement, and wonderful introduction to this episode that also does not shy away from the question of Ives's alleged homophobia, but remains focused on the composer himself as well as the array of wonderful performers who celebrate Ives's fascinating combination of old-fashioned Americana and revolutionary compositional techniques. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. We don't need to inform you that new and used motorhome prices have jumped massively in the last few years... unless you've been living under a rock. But this week, Matt and Keith are looking into the future. Could the price of motorhomes keep going up? Back at the Motorhome and Caravan Show last month, we spoke with Paul Kirby, aka The Electric Van Man, about what the future holds for vehicle sales, with the shocking revelation that motorhome prices could go up with the introduction of electric. Despite a disappointing number of EVs on display at the show, this is a change that is coming to our industry. Paul sheds light on the current state of electric motorhomes and the evolving technology in the electric vehicle sector, addressing your concerns about range, safety, licensing, and pricing. Unpacking the impact of Rishi's 2030 rule change and the zero-emission vehicle mandate, we discuss predictions for diesel-powered motorhomes and the potential challenges in the transition to electric including pricing dynamics, supply and demand issues, and the influence of government regulations on the industry. In the Q&A we hear from recent buyers about their experiences of purchasing a motorhome, and Matt tackles the topic of whether you should join an owners club. A huge thank you to our sponsors who supported us at the Motorhome and Caravan Show 2023

Vans are vehicles that generate revenue for drivers. Paul shares his thoughts on diesel vans being polluters and contributing to poor air quality and carbon emissions. Paul Kirby goes on to make a passionate pitch for all the benefits of moving to electric vans. Topics range from mental health benefits of driving electric vans over diesel to education. Vans are high mileage vehicles making fleets a quick win on the journey to 2035 when no new diesel and petrol vans will be sold.
'If I had had the career that I initially wanted, I wouldn't be singing now because I would have left so much of the real me behind' Paul Kirby is a classically trained tenor who lives and works in Oslo. He performs both as a classical singer as a soloist and in ensembles and as a banjo player and (bluegrass) singer in several bands. He is part of the Norwegian company 'Stemmespesialisten' that combines voice lessons, voice massage and coaching. He also is a Timani teacher in training: an education that focuses on in-depth anatomical knowledge in order to enhance movement and playing for musicians. Growing up in Illinois (US), his musical roots lie in the genre of music now known as “Americana.” From there he moved to the city of Boston, and eventually France, Belgium and finally, Norway. He combines all of his experiences in his current profession, which is to help singers connect to their authentic voices, as well as performing regularly as a singer on stage. In this podcast we talk about the following things: - What Paul's work for stemmespecialisten is all about - How he combines vocal massage with voice lessons - Growing up on a chicken farm in Illinois and discovering music - Working for the Norwegian National Opera - Being trained as a classical tenor while having musical roots in Bluegrass - How you can find your way into your true voice and help the body to work in harmony with itself - The importance of treating yourself with love and respect as a singer - Impressive singing versus loving singing - How do you make a whole career out of a bunch of different puzzle pieces: finding the common thread among all your experiences and who you are in the middle of that - Harmonizing with Simon and Garfunkel - Discovering Bach's music - Having a profound experience picking up the banjo again after 20 years - How to tell a story as a singer and how to tell your own story - Understanding the functional and anatomical elements of how the body works - How to create a safe environment where you can learn - Learning to recognize if you're on the right track - The importance to learn playfully so new knowledge can be integrated naturally - Physical play increases a certain way of nerve growth - We grow old from not playing - Experiencing the energy that binds us all together Here you can find the company where Paul works: https://stemmespesialisten.no/ You can book sessions with him in Norway of online. ABC Rural speaks to the NT's new Minister for Agribusiness, Paul Kirby. Why has the value of an Australian carbon credit unit (ACCU) jumped by 20 per cent this week?
After months of a "planned" hiatus, "the boys" finally take their podcast to a numerical trifecta, and enter The Hundreds. The arrival of episode 100 brings along with it: none of what we promised - and a whole lot of nothing. But that nothing... consists of a heartfelt and sometimes heartwarming conversation between three ̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶ acquaintances, who all share a love and appreciation of Jurassic Park 3. Arguably the greatest sequel in the franchise, Jurassic Park 3 released on July 18, 2001 and features the character of Dr. Alan Grant, who is now a happy man with the previous incidents of Jurassic Park now behind him. Grant is that happy that he announce in public, that nothing on Earth can persuade him back onto the islands. Maybe nothing, except Paul Kirby. Kirby and his wife, Amanda want a plane to fly them over Isla Sorna, with Dr. Grant as their guide. But not everything Kirby says is true. When the plane lands, Dr. Grant realizes that there is another reason why they are there, that he doesn't know of. Now, Dr. Grant is stuck on an island he has never been on before, with what was a plane journey now turned into a search party. There’s a ship docked in downtown St. Pete with aerialists flying from the rigging. It’s a ship filled with actors and dancers and theatre crew, creating a visually spectacular story about climate change. Adriana Kelder started the Caravan Stage Company with Paul Kirby in the 1970s. They’ve been bringing original productions to small towns and cities around North America - and Europe - for more than 40 years. Adriana and Paul toured with horse-drawn carriages for 20 years before setting sail. They raised a family as they traveled, and built a network of creative collaborators around the world. And while the troupe lives together onboard with a library in the galley and lively shared meals, their website’s up to date and their shows use high-tech gear and video projections. Quiet, passionate and full of humor, Adriana shares the inspiration behind the company and their current production, the risks they take performing political theatre and the pleasures of wanderlust. Find out more about Caravan Stage Company’s history and current projects at http://caravanstage.org. You can reserve tickets to “Nomadic Tempest,” performing April 4-8 in downtown St. Petersburg at https://www.eventbrite.com. Rehearsal photos by Tom Kramer.
