Christmas is a time for giving, and for many charities, that often means food. Jaega Wise explores the tradition and looks into the planning that goes into festive food donations.Food historian Carwyn Graves explains how the custom of giving food at Christmas has evolved over the centuries, and why the season inspires so many to give back to their communities. In Aberdare, we meet the team behind Company at Christmas, who host a festive feast for anyone who doesn't want to spend Christmas Day alone. The new CEO of Fareshare discusses how the charity manages the extra surplus food during the festive season, while Tim O'Malley from Nationwide Produce Ltd explains how his company has been working to ensure as little fresh food goes to waste as possible. In Glasgow, Social Bite founder Josh Littlejohn discusses why Christmas has become a cornerstone of his social enterprise and charity, alongside one of the volunteers who will be there to greet guests. Meanwhile, Lesley Gates in Bridgwater—known locally as Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo—shows how she's helping people make the most of their Christmas dinner ingredients through practical demonstrations on saving money and reducing waste. And in Cumbria, Rahina Borthwick, founder of the Grange-Over-Sands Community Foodshare, reflects on the importance of giving within her seaside town. She shares how their community space has become an important gathering point, including for Ukrainian refugees to celebrate Christmas together.Presented by Jaega Wise Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Natalie Donovan.

How can we solve some of the biggest societal issues we face? In this episode, Josh Littlejohn MBE shares his vision and blueprint for making meaningful change in our world through entrepreneurship. Josh is founder of Social Bite as well as The World's Big Sleepout, and has always worked hard to make a difference. He had a strong social conscience from a young age, and when a young homeless man came into Josh's very first Social Bite cafe asking for a job, it sparked an unexpected decade of charitable work and campaigning for the homeless. Social Bite is a business with purpose, and a mission to end homelessness, whilst advocating for those less fortunate in our society. He has attracted royalty and celebrities from overseas, is the inventor of mass sleepovers across the globe, and has built an entire village — and raised millions of pounds for — those experiencing homelessness. As Josh shares, it hasn't always been easy and in many instances in its early days, Social Bite was on the cusp of going under. However, through manifestation, an incredible team, a hint of luck and with a lot of hard work, Josh has achieved remarkable change — and has even bigger plans for the future.  Holly's conversation with Josh shines a light on the power of the people and what is truly possible when you possess that entrepreneurial ‘insanity' which Josh so eloquently describes. It is a must-listen for anyone out there looking to support positive progress.  If you enjoyed this conversation, you might also enjoy Holly's episode with Natalie Campbell, CEO of Belu Water.  This Conversations of Inspiration podcast episode is brought to you with support from Adobe Express. He talks about how we hounded him to come on the show and tells us the hounding he did to get on GMTV back in the 90s, at a time when advertisers did not want a black man doing aerobics on morning telly. He gives us rare insight into his personal life, how he was given up at 3 months old, moving to the UK from Jamaica and growing up in Leicester. He tells us the key things that took him from being a homeless single parent in his early 20s to training Gloria Hunniford, Lorraine Kelly, Eamon Holmes and being the face of fitness for a generation. We hear about his recent work with charities like Social Bite and starting his Motivator Club aimed at getting older people moving and caring more about their health. After her health took a bad turn and she had to fight bowel cancer, she decided to take a break to travel. At the end of 2015, she spent time in Greece and volunteered in a refugee camp on Lesvos Island. It is when she returned that she decided to set-up her own social enterprise: Invisible Cities. Invisible Cities is a community interest company that trains people who have experienced homelessness to become walking tour guides of their own city and they offer off the beaten track, personal tours, highlighting stories of real people, while raising awareness about social justice. Have you ever wondered what it is like to sleep outside through the coldest night of the year? Or how you can help to fight homelessness? Or even how George Clooney managed to put a small social enterprise café on the map? The latest episode of People Who Make Hospitality Podcast is about how we, as an organisation, are joining forces with an incredible charity Social Bite to help fight homelessness.  This time we are joined by Josh Littlejohn and David Gallacher. Josh is one of the world's leading social entrepreneurs and campaigners. He is a founder of the Social Bite, which is both a charity and social enterprise, who have in recent years run some national and global campaigns that have shifted the cultural dial on homelessness and pioneered some ground-breaking social impact projects. And having a conversation with Josh is David Gallacher, who is a Divisional Director in Mitchells & Butlers, overlooking some of the most loved and famous brands in the UK such as Toby Carvery, Harvester and Stonehouse. David has over 30 years experience of working in the industry, having worked for many well-known hospitality companies in the UK. David and Josh chat about the story of the Social bite, which started as a small charity café in Edinburgh and now they are building social villages for people who are homeless. (A bit of a spoiler - George Clooney played a big role.) They discuss how people end up becoming homeless, a lack of support systems in the UK, surviving and pivoting through a pandemic, how we as an organisation are partnering with Social bite and what everyone can do to help to fight homelessness.   Want to get involved? Could we kick-start a major transformation of our food system, in just three years? That's the ambition of the National Food Strategy, the first independent review of our food policy in nearly 75 years, commissioned by the government in 2019 and authored by Henry Dimbleby - who published the second and final part of the report this week. Food-related problems have been stacking up in the UK for a while: inequality, poor diets, a boom in costly bariatric diseases, the environmental impact of food production, the resilience of the overall system - the list goes on. But now we could be at a turning point, as the country starts to emerge (hopefully) from months of restrictions with fresh perspectives and priorities, and seeks to reposition itself post-pandemic and post-Brexit. Now, Part 2 of the National Food Strategy has set out a framework for transforming our food system. So how exactly does it propose we do that? Sheila Dillon digs into the detail of the report, speaking to Henry Dimbleby (co-founder of the restaurant chain Leon and co-author of the 2013 School Food Plan) about the strategy's focus and recommendations; and inviting listener feedback for a future episode. The programme also features questions from Caroline Keohane at the Food and Drink Federation, Martin Lines from the Nature Friendly Farming Network, and Jeanette Orrey: a former dinner lady turned school meals campaigner and co-founder of Food for Life. And we revisit previous guests Nutritank - a student organisation campaigning for better nutritional education for medics - and Social Bite: a project supporting Scotland's homeless through social enterprise cafés.
