Episode #48 - Learn about what the Director of Lifestyle Options role is within the Retirement sections at Schlegel Villages as Erin Davis & Doug Robinson welcome Branka Matijevic to the Green Bench. Branka is a relationship-builder, and community-builder, proud to support green bench conversations, and a fantastic DLO at The Village of Wentworth Heights in Hamilton. Helping seniors and their families not only to choose the right living environment but to help new residents find community, trust, friendship, and a real sense of belonging. "No matter what age, there is always a chance for love to bloom." - Erin Davis As a Director of Lifestyle Options, Branka's role is to get to know individuals considering moving into a retirement community such as The Village of Wentworth Heights and working closely with the Hamilton community to highlight what the Village offers. Her father's was living with Alzheimer's and the way she was able to love and relate to him during this challenging time has helped her relate to people who are going through similar experiences. "It has changed my life completely being able to sit on the green bench and meet so many interesting people." - Doug Robinson "Having a level of responsibility is important as we get older." - Branka Matijevic "Older adults have so much that we can learn from. It's great to watch the community gather this power and knowledge from the residents on the green bench." -Branka Matijevic "We're turning things around. We are having younger people take the time to sit down and to learn from elders on the green bench." - Branka Matijevic History of the #ElderWisdom campaign In 2016, we began a campaign to end ageism in our communities by highlighting the wisdom and talents of seniors all while using the #ElderWisdom tag on social media. 2016 - Throughout June, we brought the green bench to 13 cities across Ontario where local seniors shared their wisdom with key influencers and community members. 2017 - On June 6, 2017, 80 seniors shared #ElderWisdom on the green bench with students at 16 different high schools across Ontario. 2018 - In June, 41 seniors from 19 villages participated in #ElderWisdom in 15 cities with the green bench. 2019 - Throughout the month of June, 50 seniors shared their #ElderWisdom in the community for 49 hours on the green bench. A Twitter chat with Ron Schlegel and Instagram experience was held on social media as well! 2020 - During June, Seniors Month, residents from Schlegel Villages share their #ElderWisdom digitally through our Stories from the Green Bench videos and our LIVE Facebook events on Tuesdays. 2021 - Our focus was on this Podcast. 2022 - Green Benches returned to the community visiting 6 locations across Ontario hosting over 114 hours of conversations with 44 Schlegel Villages residents. End ageism Ageism is a form of discrimination, often experienced by older adults. Our elders have a great deal of wisdom to contribute to their communities. However, societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, make them feel unwelcome and generalize as if they were all the same. Ageism robs seniors of choice, independence, dignity and negatively impacts their quality of life. Let's use social media to end ageism and celebrate the great things seniors have to offer by sharing #ElderWisdom. "My wish is that people would have more compassion, patience and to be more inclusive to all ages." -Branka Matijevic "What I've seen to be most important is the relationships not just amongst residents, but with team members and residents. We've become one big family." -Branka Matijevic Cultivate The Ultimate Team Member Experience At Schlegel Villages, we have an amazing culture that stellar team members want to be a part of. We care about our team members as much as we care about our residents. As one family, we learn, grow, and move forward together. We are passionate and find fulfillment in making a difference in people's lives. Our caring community honours and encourages well-being, and team members are appreciated in personally meaningful ways. Through mentorship, ongoing support, and education we are empowered to go beyond the status quo, and unleash our full potential. “You can be you while being a part of our family.” "What the elders see while sitting the young ones standing on their toes won't see." - African Proverb Subscribe, rate, and review our podcast on any network and share your thoughts on social media using the #ElderWisdom tag to help others find us. ----more---- The Green Bench is a symbol of elder wisdom. Physically or virtually, the bench invites us all to sit alongside a senior, share a conversation, or give and offer advice. It challenges the stigma seniors face; the ageism still so prevalent in society. It reminds us of the wealth of wisdom our elders offer and in doing so, helps restore them to a place of reverence. "The greatest untapped resource in Canada, if not the world, is the collective wisdom of our elders." -Ron Schlegel This podcast is brought to you by Schlegel Villages, retirement & long-term care homes in Ontario, Canada. #ElderWisdom | Stories from the Green Bench is produced by Memory Tree Productions Learn more about our host, Erin Davis, at erindavis.com Learn more about #ElderWisdom at elderwisdom.ca

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 7, Texas Rangers 3 Houston Astros 4, Chicago White Sox 3 Atlanta Braves 6, Chicago Cubs 0 Tigers 7, Rangers 3 – Grossman leads Tigers past Rangers 7-3 for series split Robbie Grossman homered and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Texas Rangers 7-3 to split the four-game series. The Tigers and their league-worst offense scored five or more runs in consecutive games for the first time this season. Detroit had lost six straight before winning 14-7 Saturday. For the second day in a row, the Rangers hit a homer in the first — this time, it was Corey Seager — only to let Grossman homer during a three-run reply in the bottom of the inning. Astros 4, White Sox 3 – Matijevic homers for 1st MLB hit, Astros beat White Sox 4-3 Rookie J.J. Matijevic homered for his first major league hit and Mauricio Dubón added a two-run shot to power the Houston Astros to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Astros bounced back from a 7-0 shutout Saturday to get a 2-1 series win. The victory breaks a tie between Houston manager Dusty Baker and Chicago manager Tony La Russa, giving the 73-year-old Baker a 106-105 edge against the 77-year-old La Russa in regular-season matchups dating to 1996. Braves 6, Cubs 0 – Anderson, Olson lead Braves over Cubs, avoid 1st 3-game skid Ian Anderson pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, Matt Olson hit three doubles and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0. Travis d’Arnaud and Michael Harris II homered for the defending World Series champion Braves, who avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season. The Braves, who arrived in Chicago with a 14-game win streak, went 21-8 in a stretch of 29 straight games against teams that were under .500 at the time of the matchup. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Kilian 0-1) at Pittsburgh (Brubaker 0-7), 7:05 p.m. Detroit (Faedo 1-3) at Boston (Winckowski 1-1), 7:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Toronto (Berríos 5-2) at Chicago White Sox (Lynn 0-0), 8:10 p.m. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Tonight Colorado Avalanche at Tampa Bay Lightning, 8:00 p.m. (COL Leads 2-0) NHL – Lightning may be running out of gas vs fresher Avalanche It’s no secret Tampa Bay has played more hockey over the past two years than any other team in the NHL. That may finally be taking a toll on the two-time defending champs against the Colorado Avalanche, who took a much shorter route to the Stanley Cup Final. The Avalanche now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 going into Game 3 Monday at Tampa Bay. The Lightning have played 67 postseason games since Aug. 1, 2020. That is the most by one team over the span of three playoffs. Players and coach Jon Cooper refuse to use that as an excuse. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Indiana Fever 89, Chicago Sky 87 Fever 90, Sky 87 – Smith scores career-high 26, Fever rally, beat Sky 89-87 NaLyssa Smith scored a career-high 26 points — including a go-ahead three-point play in the closing seconds to help the Indiana Fever erase a 15-point second-half deficit and beat the Chicago Sky 89-87. Smith was fouled as she hit a turn-around jumper from the left block and made the free throw to give the Fever an 88-87 lead with 39 seconds left. Chicago missed two shots on the other end before Victoria Vivians was fouled with 7.8 seconds remaining. She made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Fever a two-point lead. After the Sky called a timeout, Courtney Vandersloot missed a short baseline jumper and the Fever held on. Chicago’s Candace Parker missed her second consecutive game due to an knee injury. Golf – US Open – Fitzpatrick a winner again at Brookline as US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is a champion again at The Country Club. And this time he has one of the grandest trophies in golf. Fitzpatrick delivered all the clutch shots on the back nine at Brookline in a terrific battle with Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler ahead of him. He seized control with a two-shot swing on the 15th and closed it out with a shot onto the green from a fairway bunker. Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Amateur at Brookline in 2013. He joins Jack Nicklaus as the only men to win a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open on the same course. Golf – LPGA – Jennifer Kupcho wins LPGA Meijer Classic in playoff After missing a 2-foot eagle putt on the first hole of a playoff, Jennifer Kupcho won the LPGA Meijer Classic on Sunday when Leona Maguire’s 3-foot birdie try lipped out on the second extra hole. Kupcho closed with a 1-under 71 to match playing partner Nelly Korda and Maguire at 18-under 270 at Blythefield Country Club. Maguire finished with a 65. Korda, the winner last year, had a 72 after taking a one-stroke lead over Kupcho into the final round. Korda dropped out of the playoff with a three-putt par on first extra trip down the par-5 18th. Kupcho won for the 2nd time on the LPGA Tour, following her major victory in April at Mission Hills in the California desert. NCAABSB – Sooners beat Notre Dame 6-2 to move within win of CWS finals Cade Horton struck out a career-high 11 in six innings, Tanner Tredaway continued his torrid postseason with three hits, and Oklahoma took control of its bracket in the College World Series with a 6-2 win over Notre Dame. Horton held the Irish scoreless on three singles the first five innings. Tredaway continued to be a catalyst for the Sooners and is batting .513 in the NCAA Tournament. Chicago's Candace Parker missed her second consecutive game due to an knee injury. Golf – US Open – Fitzpatrick a winner again at Brookline as US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is a champion again at The Country Club. And this time he has one of the grandest trophies in golf.

1, 2020. Though Steelheart was considered a new band when its self-titled release came out in 1990, the nucleus of the band had been together for nearly a decade. As Red Alert, the band spent most of the ‘80s honing songwriting skills and recording demos in Connecticut while playing occasional shows in a state that didn't offer a lot of opportunities for a hard rock band. With a plane ticket and 4-song demo cassette in hand, the band, now called Steelheart, scored a record deal almost immediately after relocating to Los Angeles and within a year of moving to the West Coast, Steelheart was topping charts with “I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)” which showcased Milijenko Matijevic's soaring and glass-shattering vocals. With a modest level of success, the age old question of, “What would have happened had Steelheart moved to L.A. five years earlier?” is one that Matijevic has considered but knows he's powerless to answer. After playing 50 shows in support of 1992's Tangled in Reins, Steelheart played a Halloween gig opening for Slaughter. Matijevic attempted to climb a lighting truss only to discover it had not been properly secured. The 1,000 pound truss fell on Matijevic breaking his nose, cheekbone and jaw and, subsequently, led to Steelheart's breakup as Matijevic was in the hospital and rehab for a considerable amount of time. With a new lineup in tow, Matijevic has carried on the Steelheart name and released Wait (1996), Good 2B Alive (2008) and Through Worlds of Stardust (2017) while playing gigs whenever he can. The singer also provided the vocals for Mark Wahlberg's character in the 2001 film Rock Star which featured Steelheart's “We All Die Young”. In 2022, Matijevic released the single “Trust in Love” in multiple languages in support of global peace and hopes that the song becomes an anthem for those who need hope in their lives.

"Piano Night Live" Ep. 19 - Season 2 | We All Die Young - Steel Dragon This has never been performed on piano before. Some history about the song "We All Die Young" is a song by Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart, and Kenny Kanowski formerly of Steelheart. It is the first song from the 1996 album Wait. The song was covered by the fictional band Steel Dragon in the 2001 film Rock Star, with Miljenko Matijevic on vocals, Zakk Wylde on guitar, Jeff Pilson on bass and Jason Bonham on drums. For the movie, Matijevic performed the vocals for Mark Wahlberg's character, Chris "Izzy" Cole. In this episode we are livin' the life with Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart. We catch up with Steelheart's main man Miljenko to talk about his career, the new live album, and what Steelheart fans can expect in 2019. In 1990 when Steelheart finally got their shot to hit the rock scene, the band embodied everything you would want from a band in that era. They had the look, catchy songs, emotional ballads, screeching guitars, energetic live shows, and a singer named Miljenko Matijevic with a multi-octave range that would make your head spin. Through the journey, Steelheart ended up with a varied history. The band had a couple of hit songs of off 2 amazing albums and then quickly fell off the face of the earth after a fluke stage accident. Miljenko rebuilt the band for a stint in 1996, was involved in the movie Rock Star (playing the voice of Marky Mark Wahlberg) in 2001 and then returned to the rock scene for good in 2006. In 2010, Miljenko even did a stint being the lead singer for The Doors. After releasing the acclaimed Through Worlds of Stardust in 2017, Steelheart is back with a live CD/DVD called Rock ‘n Milan. Miljenko Matijevic tells his Growin’ Up Rock story by sharing his humble beginnings, move to America, his start in music, influences, how Steelheart became a MTV smash, handling adversity of the music business, coming back into the scene through movies/TV, success that being a hit in Asia brought and what the future has yet to offer. Miljenko was very transparent and passionate throughout the conversation. You will enjoy the conversation but to truly appreciate everything that Steelheart has to offer, we encourage you to see them live. The experience is energetic and the musicianship is impressive.
