A new study found that hair loss affects over 52% of women over 50 years old, and 80% of women by the time they are 60 years old. During peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause, women's hormones are fluctuating, decline, and causing chronic hair shedding, thinning, and hair loss in many women. During women's midlife years, there are other hormonal changes going on causing weight gain, leading to yo-yo dieting, increased stress, disrupted sleep, and challenges with exercising. Add in genetics, poor nutrient absorption, and other health issues and you have the perfect storm for hair loss. There are solutions for reversing hair loss. Lifestyle interventions are the first lines of defense (optimizing nutrition, sleep, stress management, and exercise). Making sure you are absorbing nutrients properly, and have good gut health is also essential. Comprehensive lab testing dictates supplementation, and possible medication, and then looking at the array of hair growth therapies to create a personalized approach to growing healthy hair.Dr. Lady Dy is double board certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology and has clinical expertise in hair loss and pigmentation disorders, including ethnic skin and hair disorders. I was confused about "heuristics"! It is always so exciting when I learn something new that makes things clearer to me. According to Dr. Gigerenzer, heuristics are NOT the same as cognitive bias. Cognitive bias describes PAST behavior, often in situations of so-called "risk" (the economic term) (that actually means that all variables are known). Heuristics guide what can be DONE in the FUTURE and are helpful in situations of uncertainty. Dr. Gigerenzer is an international expert on judgments under uncertainty, and this is part 1 of my conversation with him on heuristics. Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer, PhD is Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam, Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg and partner of Simply Rational - The Institute for Decisions. He is former Director of the Center for Adaptive Behavior and Cognition (ABC) at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich, Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago and John M. Olin Distinguished Visiting Professor, School of Law at the University of Virginia. His award-winning popular books Calculated Risks, Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious, and Risk Savvy: How to Make Good Decisions have been translated into 21 languages. His academic books include Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart, Rationality for Mortals, Simply Rational, and Bounded Rationality (with Reinhard Selten, a Nobel Laureate in economics). Given the concept of emotions being OURS (OUtside of us, Relational, and Situational), work culture, home culture, national culture, gender culture...all of these cultural settings are relevant to how we individually do emotions. We can be more resonant with each other, and Dr. Batja Mesquita explains what this means and how we can do it.  Dr. Batja Mesquita is the author of Between Us: How Cultures Create Emotions. A social psychologist, an affective scientist, and a pioneer of cultural psychology, she spent much of her life in the Netherlands before moving to the United States for her postdoctoral years at the University of Michigan, where she was part of the “culture and cognition group” that played a key role in the start of cultural psychology. She subsequently worked in North Carolina at Wake Forest University. Currently, she is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Leuven, Belgium, where she studies the role of culture in emotions, and of emotions in culture and society. She directs the Center for Social and Cultural Psychology in Leuven. She has numerous honors and awards; most recently receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Advances in Cultural Psychology Award by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in 2022. Emotions are OURS (OUtside of us, Relational, and Situational), rather than MINE (Mental, INside of us, and Essential; essential meaning always the same) (as in the movie Inside Out). The concept of emotions as OURS has revolutionized my thinking about emotions and how I do my emotions! Dr. Batja Mesquita is the author of Between Us: How Cultures Create Emotions. I know...dialectical behavior therapy sounds complicated - but it is DBT for short, and Dr. Osmond does a great job of summarizing a key concept - wise mind being a combo of rational mind and emotion mind. This is an important concept for us all, relevant to home life and any decision-making task, including diagnostic work for physicians. DBT (first brought up to me by David Caruso in a prior episode) can also give insights into burnout (consider listening in to Michi Shinohara, if you haven't yet!). Dr. Allison Osmond is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Osmond completed residency in Anatomic Pathology at Western University in London, Ontario Canada in 2015, followed by a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Western, with a focus in gastrointestinal pathology. She then worked in a general Anatomical Pathology practice for one year and then completed Dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Toronto in 2018. Dr. Osmond has a keen interests include digital pathology and teaching dermatopathology to residents and medical students at the microscope and in particular via the global #dermpath Twitter community.
