Many of us feel more intuitive and connected to the mystical and the magical in the second half of the menstrual cycle and today I'm directly exploring the connection between menstrual cycle awareness, witchcraft and psychic capacities. Our guest is Mimi Young, a Taiwanese-Canadian, Daoist, animist, spirit worker and medium, who serves her community through ancient Chinese esoteric practices, dream interpretations, unconventional tea ceremonies, and occult education with her witches coven community. Mimi first experienced her intuitive and psychic gifts as a child, but they went underground until five months of bed rest while pregnant with her second child. And together we share a very unfiltered, raw and wild conversation about how Mimi works with the different skills and capacities that awaken in the four phases of the menstrual cycle in her divination and spellwork. We explore:Why you can't work with spellcraft or psychic gifts without being fully present and connected with your body, and how menstrual cycle awareness supports this. How to work more consciously with the premenstrual phase of the cycle as a gateway to your intuitive, psychic, magical and shadow work capacities. Mimi's animist approach to building a relationship to your menstrual blood as a conscious, alive, intelligence, and some ideas for working with our blood in magical ways. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

Traei Tsai was 6 years old when her family emigrated from Taipei, Taiwan to make a new start in Vancouver, Canada.  New to a country and community where they didn't speak the language, Traei began school where, for the first time in her life, she began to recognize that she was different. Some othe the children teased her, and to manage the discomfort she found solace in books. She began learning English through reading, even though her grasp of the language was still tenuous. In books she found the power of sharing a story, a way to open oneself to world where a different way of being was possible. She was grateful to her teachers and recalls a time when a teacher corrected her after she'd read aloud. “She did it with such grace,” she said, not shaming her in any way.  Perhaps not surprisingly, Traei found her voice in sharing the stories of others.  On her podcast Her Stories Untold, she shares stories from women from various walks of life as a way to build connection to the ordinary (and extraordinary) lives we all lead. As an actress and filmmaker she aims to open hearts and minds to the challenges that exist in the world around us.  Film has the ability to break us open, encouraging us to think about things differently, and then, perhaps, to shape our actions to make the world a better place.Traei Tsai is a Taiwanese-Canadian multi-talented artist based in Vancouver, Canada, who gained recognition for her role in the globe's first "Corona Movie," which in addition to the subject of the film's title, explored issues of racism and xenophobia. As the Vice-President of the BC Minorities in Film & TV Society, she champions diversity in the film industry, advocating for representation both in front of and behind the camera. Traei speaks seven languages with varying degrees of fluency, including English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, French, Taiwanese, and Russian. She is currently developing new digital art series to promote harmonious living and is in pre-development on several documentary, web series, and TV/film projects. To learn more about Robert Maggio, the composer of "Where Love is Love," our theme music, please check out his website. To learn more about Suzanne, visit her website. With all of the negative, and often untrue, headlines that surround foster care and adoption, it's refreshing to read a story that uplifts and brings hope.  That's exactly what this week's podcast guest is on a mission to do. Dagmara Sitek is a children's book author, who is turning tragedy into hope and bringing encouragement and empowerment to children in foster care, and their caregivers, all over the world.  A Little More About Dagmara... Dagmara Sitek is a Canada-based mother of two, who is committed to children's education and emotional well-being. Originally from Poland, she is married to a Taiwanese-Canadian. She wrote the Courage Tales series about foster care heroes because she realized something important – not all kids get a fair shot at life.

“This particular residency was a thematic one, and the theme was titled Meeting for Teas. So it drew artists curators and thinkers from all over. We all had this time and space to sit with Tea independently, sit with Tea communally, and talk about tea in all the different ways, including decolonizing as an aspect of tea and tea culture. And I couldn't stop crying the first two weeks when I was there, and I didn't even really know what I was crying about. To a certain degree, I kind of did, because the day that I received news that I've been accepted was the same day my Nai Nai passed away.” Mimi Young, née Lin, is a Taiwanese Canadian animist spirit medium, Tea devotée, writer, and the founder of Ceremonie. Mimi's work lies at the intersection of animacy and re-animation, intuition and creativity, using symbolic interpretation and ancient Chinese wisdom practices to commune with the Unseen and invite new possibilities during times of uncertainty and change. In this podcast episode, Mimi shares excerpts from her limited edition artist's book, A Tea Stronger Than Death: Poems of Hurt and Healing While On Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain. “Created during the 5-week thematic residency, Meeting For Teas, held at the Banff Centre for Arts + Creativity, located on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain, this collection of poems and illustrations of grey-scaled cyanotypes (sun prints) is both prayer and journey through light, shadow, and verse, giving honour to the painful and healing moments of locating oneself over and over again, with Tea, the departed, and the more-than-human.” She also has an upcoming sliding scale 6-week transformational writing series titled UGLY WORDS. Hello beautiful ones!  I am so excited to bring you this month's episode of The Becoming Podcast with Mimi Young. Mimi Young is a Taiwanese Canadian animist spirit medium and the founder of Ceremonie, an esoteric brand focused on conversations around greater intuition and creativity, animism, and realigning with our deeper purpose. Mimi works at the intersection of animism and wu shamanism, practical magick, tea kinship, and other Chinese mystic practices to communicate with the Unseen, offering private readings, education and mentorship, and made-to-order skin and aura care. Mimi has held space globally in her Mystery Mentorship program and retreats, as well as collaboratively with brands including Goop, Almost 30, Spirit House Collective, and Tokyo Smoke. She currently holds an online coven space, Homing Coven, open to all who desire to walk closely with the Seen and Unseen.  Here's some of what Mimi and I talk about in this episode: > Failure as a confrontation with death that ultimately makes us more human and divine >  How to suspend your disbelief and follow your intuition in a hyper-rational world >  Animism and working with tea as an ally > How we clutch exogenous sources of intuition like tarot and astrology when we're traversing the unknown, and what to do instead >  How the wisdom of the 5 Chinese Elements can support us to thrive in liminal space >  How motherhood sparked Mimi's intuition – and how this plays out for so many mothers >  The link between creativity and intuition, and the animacy and mystery of Creative Force And so much more.  This was such a rich and wide-reaching conversation, and Mimi is so incredibly well-spoken and wise.  We had fun, too, and laughed a lot!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Mimi as much as I did in this episode.

Graham also noted the upcoming MBA essay workshops, scheduled for July, signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessays Then Alex quizzed Graham with some 'real humans' lighting round questions. As usual, this episode features three ApplyWire entries: First up, we review a Taiwanese candidate residing in Canada. They've got a strong academic record, including a masters degree, and with 6 years of experience, it places them on the older end of the spectrum. Their GMAT score is solid but not outstanding for top programs. Their experience is accounting-focused, and they also are active in their communities, teaching financial literacy. Our second candidate has some quite interesting experience in the financial advising area, with three progressive moves. They have a specific goal in terms of a search fund, and their extra curriculars look positive. Alex and Graham worry about their GRE/GPA combination (320/3.19), this is the area they need to bolster, if possible. Finally Alex selects a candidate who has a low GPA (2.8) and a high GRE (330). Your hosts discuss the impact of these numbers on a candidate, and measures they may take to improve this aspect of the profile. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. After making nearly $2000 on his fourth day on the job, Sam decided to drop out of school and work with a door-to-door sales company. While he was there, he helped grow that team from 25 agents to 300 agents selling for one of Canada's largest telecom companies. Since then, Sam has helped scale companies of all industry types and sizes, including the most recent company he started, VTMEMBER, which he scaled from 0-65k a month in monthly recurring revenue in 6 months. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:Why the dog-eat-dog mindset will be the downfall of the corporate worldHow VTMEMBER combats taking advantage of lesser income countriesWhy cold calling is a superpowerHow leading from the front produces the best resultsWhen was the last time someone told you noHow failure and success correlateHow Sam's business plan builds loyalty and accountabilitySponsors for this episodeThis episode is sponsored by STS Capital Partners and Altruvest Charitable Services. In this episode….How does being a door-to-door salesman inspire someone to start their own business and earn over $65,000 a month in their first six months? Sam Chang, a Taiwanese Canadian out of Vancouver, did just that. After dropping out of university at 19, he used his sales experience to climb the corporate ladder. He now uses his expertise in sales and cold-calling to guide his company VTMEMBER, a virtual assistant company, to new heights.Sam recalls two instances where the dog-eat-dog way of the corporate world caused him to snap and leave. The corporate world's structure employs what Sam termed the “Golden Handcuffs”. However, through this adversity, he rose and built VTMEMBER. By creating opportunities for employees within the company, he has created a space that encourages career development and growth. In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and Sam Chang discuss how the corporate world keeps people within its clutch with Golden Handcuffs. VTMEMBER extends worldwide and was built with both employees and consumers in mind. Applications like Zoom have allowed businesses to take on global expansion. Sam and Martin discuss how his unique business structure challenges global inequalities and builds loyalty within his company.Resources mentioned in this episode:URGEOContact email: info@urgeo.comMartin Hunter on LinkedInVTMEMBERSam Chang on LinkedInSam Chang on InstagramSam Chang on Facebook'The 4 Hour Workweek' by Timothy FerrissBook: Wolf of Wall StreetMovie: Wolf of Wall StreetSponsor for this podcast...This podcast is brought to you by URGEO.URGEO is the Latin for urge: A strong desire to drive change, stimulate thought, incite feeling, and encourage action. Martin Hunter and his team provide liberation for the CEO and Board of a company through their fractional COO services.URGEO's fractional COO services help to move you through growing pains so that your company can flourish and improve its profits. They have worked with a multitude of companies in SaaS, CPG, mining, and transportation, from start-ups to large multinational corporations. A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:   This year, the Lunar New Year falls on February 1st and it's the year of the tiger. For those of you familiar with Lunar New year celebrations, you may recall some of the traditions, which might include: wearing the color red, receiving or giving red envelopes, eating special foods, lion dances and firecrackers   My guest on this episode of Talking Taiwan is not going to talk about any of that. Charlie Wu is the Managing Director of the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, which organizes Taiwanfest and Lunarfest. The Lunarfest is a twist on celebrating the Lunar New Year, inspired by the Lantern Festival which marks the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Charlie talked about how Lunarfest has evolved over the course of a decade and engages with local indigenous communities in Canada.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Charlie's background and upbringing in Taiwan Charlie's experience assimilating to life in the U.S. The differences between Canadians and Americans Why he wrote an article about being Taiwanese Canadian, not Chinese Canadian Why Charlie was named one of the top 100 influential Chinese Canadians in B.C. What happened when a group of Chinese Canadians asked Charlie to support their fight against anti-Asian and anti-Chinese racism at the beginning of the pandemic When Lunarfest started and its connection to the 2010 Winter Olympics hosted by Vancouver How Lunarfest is the only legacy event from the 2010 Winter Olympics that has continued until present day How Lunarfest has evolved over time and been able to sustain for a decade The challenges in changing the perception from Chinese New Year to Lunar New Year This year's Lunarfest events in B.C. How the Lunarfest is different from most traditional Lunar New Year celebrations How Lunarfest has engaged the local community by inviting participation of indigenous people The artists who have created the lanterns for Lunarfest There will be a celebration planned on February 5thand 6th at the ---art gallery The Lunarfest installation in association with the Taiwanese Canadian Association of Toronto in Markham The endangered Formosa leopard The Lunarfest's annual arts and crafts programs for 2000 school-aged kids in the Greater Vancouver Area Past Lunarfest programs and how Lunarfest has changed due to COVID How the Panjabi community is participating in Lunarfest Vancouver Cirque de Soleil's participation on Lunarfest Vancouver Lunarfest lanterns will be on Granville Island for the first time Indigenous artist Susan Point's participation in Lunarfest Vancouver How you can participate and see photos of Lunarfest online using the hashtags #lunarfest #lanterncity The Lunarfest lanterns have audio descriptions about the artists accompanied by pipa music in the composition, “Woven Melodies”   Related Links: To view all related links for this article, click link below: https://talkingtaiwan.com/charlie-wu-of-lunarfest-celebrates-the-year-of-the-tiger-ep-167/

Middle earth - China's cultural industry podcast

China’s entertainment industry has undergone staggering changes over the past two decades. The content, the ways it's delivered, and even the stars themselves are taking shape in a manner that is unique to China and reflects a new type of user — one who has come of age in the digital era. cw: eating disorders and domestic violence Gloria Hu grew up a Taiwanese-Canadian in a majority-minority suburb of Toronto, with a Mormon father and Presbyterian mother, eventually migrating into the United Church of Canada. In this episode, Gloria gets personal about how recovering from her eating disorder coincided with letting go of the rigidity of evangelicalism, why therapy based around Intensive Outpatient Treatment was for her a game changer, and discusses her doctoral research on religion and religiosity as a predictor of health as well as potential intimate partner violence among Asian Americans. Gloria also shares her painful but necessary experience of creating distance and setting boundaries with family members and the moment she realized something needed to change. (Episode is primarily in English) Tony Hu (胡牧民) is a Taiwanese-Canadian who has gone back and forth between Taiwan and Canada (加拿大) his whole life. He shares his experiences and perspectives on growing in Canada and the US, going to American School (美國學校) in Taiwan, college in Canada, alternative military service (替代役) in Taiwan, and now back in Canada for grad school. *** (intro) in English and Chinese (2:15) How Tony stumbled upon the podcast. Interested in hearing about how other people think about their Taiwanese identity. (4:25) Tony's self-intro in English. Childhood going back and forth between Taiwan, the US, and Canada. High school in Taiwan at an international school. University in Montreal, Canada. Alternative-military service 替代役 for 13 months in Taiwan. Back in Toronto, Canada now for graduate school. (5:41) Tony's self-intro in Chinese. 在台灣上美國學校。在大學讀心理學。回台灣當兵,在金門的國小當替代役。現在在加拿大讀social work. (8:00) Experience attending international/American school in Taiwan. The curriculum was catered towards learning through an American lens (American government, politics, and history), so Taiwanese history, language and culture not really taught in school. Outside of school, he'd have to switch to speaking Chinese. English bubble in a Chinese-speaking country. Code-switching came naturally; conversational Chinese was done at home, but his dominant language was English. His educational background was very westernized. Now trying to get in touch with his heritage more. (12:30) A lot of the Chinese, particularly reading and writing, he knows now was acquired recently through the military experience teaching at the school (替代役). Relied on the Chinese-English dictionary to write his daily logs. (14:20) Had to have foreign passport to attend international school in Taiwan. So mostly of his classmates were Americans or Asians who spent time overseas. Family could be involved in business or missionary. (16:30) Didn't have to attend cram school or take the Taiwanese university tests. He took the SATs and participated in extracurriculars because he knew he'd be going abroad for college. Canadian universities don't put as much emphasis on extracurriculars as US universities. (18:30) What's cool about the US and Canada is that they're both so multi-cultural. Communities of people can form pretty naturally. Vancouver is a Taiwanese hub in Canada, as is Toronto. Access to Asian food in Toronto: Scarborough-Markham, Pacific Mall, Chinatown. Please tag us on Instagram (@tonyhu0_0 and @twdiaspora) with specific Taiwanese food recommendations in Toronto! Tony's favorite food: Bubble tea 珍珠奶茶 + Taiwanese beef noodle soup 牛肉麵. Check out Episode 14 for continued discussion with Tony about mental health. *** Say hi! 來打招呼!If you like what you hear or have a story to share, drop me a note!
