Anthony ‘Staz' Stazicker CGCThruDark Co-Founder Former SBS“The Hard Road Will Take You Home”I'm thrilled to share the latest episode STAZ from ThruDark with you all. I had the honour of sitting down with Anthony ‘Staz' Stazicker CGC, a former member of the UK Special Boat Service (SBS). His journey from the frontlines of Afghanistan to founding the groundbreaking, Tier 1 Quality clothing brand - THRUDARK is nothing short of inspiring. Here are some key takeaways and intriguing insights from our conversation: Key Lessons and Ideas Bravery Redefined: Anthony shares that bravery isn't the absence of fear but the ability to act despite it. His stories from Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC), highlight this nuanced understanding of courage. Medals and Meaning: The CGC, awarded for valour, is a symbol of collective achievement rather than individual heroism. Anthony's sentiment, "Medals are for mothers," underscores the shared nature of military success. Training and Experience: The rigorous training in the Royal Marines and SBS prepared Anthony for high-pressure situations. He emphasises that exposure to challenging environments and repetitive training are crucial for developing an automatic response to stress. Transition to Civilian Life: Anthony's shift from military to civilian life wasn't easy. He co-founded the clothing brand THRUDARK with his friend Louis Tinsley, channeling their military experiences into a new venture. This transition highlights the importance of finding a new mission and maintaining a sense of community. Authenticity in Business: THRUDARK s success is rooted in authenticity. The brand's gear is tested in real-world, extreme conditions, and their marketing features real people, not models. This genuine approach resonates deeply with their audience. Learning from Failure: Anthony's mantra, "I either win or I learn," is a powerful reminder that failure is a stepping stone to success. This perspective has shaped his approach to both business and life. Support Systems: The importance of having a support system, whether in the military or civilian life, cannot be overstated. Anthony's partnership with Louis and the support from his partner Ruby have been crucial in his journey.Special Forces Insights: High-Stakes Operations: Anthony recounts two significant operations in Afghanistan, including thwarting a large-scale Taliban attack and a high-stakes firefight. These stories provide a gripping look into the realities of special forces operations. From Sniper to Entrepreneur: The transition from a specialised military role to civilian life is challenging. Anthony's journey from sniper to entrepreneur is a testament to adaptability and resilience. THRUDARK's Mission: The brand's strapline, "Endeavor Through Adversity," reflects their philosophy of pushing through challenges. Their high-performance gear is designed for extreme conditions, inspired by Anthony's military experiences. Upcoming Collaborations and Charity Work: An exciting collaboration withThe Call of Duty Endowment, helping get veterans back to work. https://www.callofdutyendowment.org/ This partnership underscores Through Dark's commitment to social responsibility. I hope these highlights spark your curiosity and entice you to listen to the full episode. Anthony's journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of purpose, resilience, and authenticity in navigating life's challenges. Rebels, at a certain age, I guess it's tricky to make new friends. (I still don't understand why I get so much flak for handing out applications. My rejection letters are highly regarded, you know...) It was interesting getting to know Scott, and hearing the story of how the podcast came into existence. We're going to have to do something about that podcast that keeps them from winning that award. I would suggest a horse head microphone, to send a message, but that might be kind of cool you know? (I'm not referring to an actual head of a horse, so calm down, you with the sign. I'm talking squeaky toy.) But anyway, have a listen, even if you're a Jersey or Florida man, and you happen to be made of cardboard (Don't worry, the interview explains everything.) Thanks for coming on the show, Scott! Young Puerto Rican women became the face of the genre. They sang about love, heartbreak, and their sexual desires. In Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's “I Wonder If I Take You Home” —a huge hit in the genre— a young woman sings about that on her own terms and without shame, opening up mother-daughter conversations that weren't happening. Created on the streets by young Nuyoricans in the mid-1980s, freestyle music became the soundtrack for the lives of second-generation Puerto Ricans. Hip-hop and pop, Latin Caribbean rhythms and instruments — it all came together in freestyle. The sound was ubiquitous in New York, and later in Orlando, Florida, where many of these Boricuas were charting new ground and new lives across the diaspora. Artists, many of whom were young Puerto Rican women, ultimately became the face of the genre; and for the listeners that so resembled them, the music provided an opportunity to dance to the beat of someone who looked and sounded like them. Young freestyle artists sang about love, heartbreak, and their sexual desires. In Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's “I Wonder If I Take You Home” — one of the genre's biggest hits — a young woman sings about her sexual desire, on her own terms and without shame. As a Boricua born in the '90s, reporter Raquel Reichard didn't experience the freestyle explosion in real time, but she's felt its profound ripple effects. In this episode, we meet two mother-daughter duos — including Raquel and her mother — for whom “I Wonder if I Take You Home” is particularly special. The song opened intergenerational conversations around sexuality, respectability and empowerment, and while impacting their lives both personally and professionally, it also strengthened their relationships with each other. Learn more about the voices in this episode: • Stacey DiLiberto, lecturer at the University of Central Florida • Louie Ortiz-Fonseca, freestyle historian and former freestyle artist • Nic Lopez Rodriguez, DJ and performance studies scholar • Stephanie Loraine Piñeiro, Executive Director of Florida Access Network • Read Raquel Reichard's reporting on the history of birth control trials. • Watch the documentary "La Operación,” about the sterilization of Puerto Rican women during the 1950s and 60s. Our cover of “I Wonder If I Take You Home” is by the artist RaiNao, featuring IFE (out this April). Listen to our Spotify playlist, featuring music from this episode — and this season. We'll keep adding to it each week as new episodes come out. Special thanks this week to Zoe Colón, Angel Vendrell, Jackie and Emily Diaz, Richie Rosario, Cynthia Torres, DJ Dominick, and Maritza and Lizardo Reichard. Fact checking this season is by Istra Pacheco and María Soledad Dávila Calero. This season of La Brega is made possible by the Mellon Foundation.
Un agradecimiento especial a Zoe Colón, Angel Vendrell, Jackie and Emily Diaz, Richie Rosario, Cynthia Torres, DJ Dominick, y Maritza y Lizardo Reichard. Ana & Lizzie start Part 2 with discussing topics from Maria Sherman's book “Larger Than Life”, including the business of One Direction and their professional relationship with 5 Seconds of Summer. We also talk about the Rainbow Direction and how 1D was most likely the first ever queer-friendly boyband, and how this benefitted them. We then get into a deep dive of their albums Midnight Memories, Take You Home, Four, and Made in the A.M. Credit is given to how 1D re-defined so many boyband “rules”, including properly setting up every member for a successful solo career with the proper backing and support from their label and music industry (and yes we compare this to how JC Chasez and the rest of *NSYNC were treated) Don't forget to listen to Lizzie's Essential One Direction Spotify Playlist! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13q5MfPxa3QNAxQcK4jxvM?si=a0186391a4d84812 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/boybandpod/support

Mandi Macias a multi-talented singer and songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles California. She wrote her first song at the tender age of 8. Her first song dubbed “Old Pal” was a tribute to her late Nana Barbara. She found solace in writing music and later began piano and singing lessons. Turning pain into purpose and lessons into studio sessions. Her overarching ambition is to do what she loves and bring happiness to others through her music. Her dream is to one day write music with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus and write songs for other amazing artists. She also wants to one day open a record Label company and help young artist! Mandi first rose to prominence after recording a cover of Camila Cabello's “Crying in the Club”. The music video for the song garnered plaudits and is currently her most viewed video with over 84K views. She then followed up the success of the song with her debut EP Titled “Sixteen” which she released on her 16th Birthday. Despite being regarded as a “Pop” artist Mandi's sound combines elements and nuances from multiple genres such as Synthwave, Alternative Pop, Electro Pop, and Contemporary R&B. One of her most recent singles, “Some Nights”, hit over a million streams amongst all Streaming platforms, including Spotify with 460,000 streams! Finishing the last week of winter quarter classes and getting ready to face finals week, I talk about the upcoming exams and papers I have waiting for me. On a more exciting note, I detail my somewhat-carefully-laid out but ambitious plan to immerse myself in language study both during the academic year and during the summer, a luxury I can now afford as I forfeit the second major/minor life and opt to focus on one major, leaving free space for language courses. Unfortunately, many parts of my plan are contingent on many things being successful, but one can hope! To pump us up for the final stretches of winter quarter, get through the semester's midterms, or even survive through one more workday, I recommend a flirty but groovy Korean song that boasts a strong choreography that matches well with its lyrics!

Psalm 49:1-20 It's a beautiful display of how our lives only can be redeemed by Jesus. No wealth on this earth can buy our place in heaven. We are not to be jealous of rich people for they will not take anything with them they will not see the light if they didn't know Jesus. Live in your own lane, at your own pace.

Big props to Belmonts, Curb College of Music for hosting the honest conversation on where women are at in having a chance for equality in music. Recorded live at Columbia Studio A, Cassadee Pope (The Voice and recording artist), Tracy Gershon (artist manager and c0-founder of Change the Conversation), and Leslie Fram (Senior Vice President of Music Strategy for CMT and co-founder of Change the Conversation) all share their feelings on where we are as a community in accepting women as equals in business and in creativity. All three women brought their unique experiences and vocations into the conversation. We start with the purpose of Change the Conversation and the numbers behind the topic at hand. The double standards against women and has it always been like this? Then looking ahead is there a chance for women to not just survive but to truly thrive within music. Change the Conversation is dedicated to improving the environment for women in music. Their goal is to become obsolete and “to never have this conversation again." In an attempt to turn their frustration into action and help level the playing field, Leslie Fram, Tracy Gershon, and Beverly Keel formed Change the Conversation in late 2014. Cassadee Pope; singer, song-writer, and musician was the lead vocalist of the rock band Hey Monday then embarked on a season of The Voice and became the first female winner. Her debut solo country album, Frame by Frame, was a top 10 Billboard 200 record and it debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, with 43,000 copies sold in its first week. Today she is releasing new music and working on new material. Recently, she's released "One More Red Light" and "Take You Home" that you can download on Spotify or Apple Music. Be sure to go to for tour dates, merch, and music and follow here @cassadeepope. Leslie Fram serves as Senior Vice President of Music Strategy and Talent for CMT, overseeing all music integration within the CMT brand, including original programs, CMT and music video airplay across all screens. Respected for both her hit intuition and hard-driving passion for music, Fram was the first woman to receive the TJ Martell Award in recognition of outstanding performance in the music industry in 2000 and was presented with the NARAS-Atlanta Chapter Heroes Award for her outstanding contributions to music and the music community. In 2009, she was honored as a Lifetime Achievement Inductee in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. She will also be one of the recipients of the very first ‘Innovation In Music’ Awards held June 6th in Nashville. Leslie currently serves on the Board of the Academy of Country Music, the Recording Academy/ Nashville Chapter, Board of Directors for The Sports Authority, the Nashville Film Festival Music Committee, and an alum of Leadership Music Class of 2014. Fram is an avid philanthropist and spokesperson, using her voice to support numerous non-profits and causes. Tracy Gershon is a noted music business professional with a wide-ranging career discovering, nurturing and developing influential talent as an A&R and music publishing executive as well as an artist manager. During her A&R career at Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, Gershon signed award-winning platinum-seller Miranda Lambert and help guide the careers of Blake Shelton, Randy Travis, Gretchen Wilson, The Wreckers, Faith Hill , Big & Rich and Lori McKenna. According to the website www.thegatheringireland.com, The Gathering 2013, launched by the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Tourism in May 2012 and supported by Fáilte Ireland (National Tourism Development Authority) and Tourism Ireland, is the biggest tourism initiative ever launched by Ireland. Its intent is to give an economic boost to the country which has staggered in recent years under the weight of failed banks and the burst real estate bubble. The programs and events planned for the year are designed to encourage an estimated 70 million people of Irish ancestry who live around the world to visit the country and reconnect with their families and their heritage. A total of 3,144,800 people visited Ireland between January and June of 2013, an increase of about 8% from 2,982,400 for the same period last year. The number of North American tourists from between April and June grew about 15%, from 305,700 to 350,800, compared to the same months in 2012. In 2009 about 36 million people in the United States claimed some Irish ancestry either as immigrants themselves or from some more distant relation. With that range of generational links the connections that Irish Americans feel to Ireland and family there varies widely. In the Oral History Program at Glucksman Ireland House one of our objectives is to learn how or if our participants connect to their ancestry. Do they identify as Irish American, how do they share their heritage with their children, what do they know of their family origins in Ireland, and how or do they stay in touch with Irish relatives? In this year of the Gathering we thought it fitting to share some of the recollections and stories we have heard over the past several years about visits home and how those trips helped to shape the individual’s sense of self, family, and heritage. Visiting Ireland is an emotional and illuminating experience for most whether the contact is made as a child or as an adult or whether it is organized by parents or self-initiated. Either way the experience is a personal one and the journey home begins long before the visitor steps foot on Irish soil.
