STRONGER BONES LIFESTYLE: REVERSING THE COURSE OF OSTEOPOROSIS NATURALLY
Healing scoliosis without surgery seems impossible, but yoga may provide hope to patients suffering under the weight of their diagnosis. Today, we welcome back Dr.Fishman to discuss his yoga routine for scoliosis. His technique is helping patients without surgical intervention. Most cases of scoliosis are characterized as idiopathic, meaning no medical explanation. However, Dr. Fishman believes the cause is simply muscular imbalance. This simple hypothesis informs his yoga therapy so that he can address the weaker side of his patients. By evening out the muscular capacity, it is possible to reverse scoliosis and prevent dire symptoms from arising. Left untreated, the angle of the curve worsens by 1 degree each year. Elderly patients with untreated scoliosis can develop curves that obstruct the heart's ability to fill with blood, subsequently depleting the organs of oxygen.Early intervention is the key to reducing the long-term consequences of scoliosis. Dr. Fishman's Yoga for scoliosis has the potential to change lives, and help patients live a stronger bones lifestyle!Key Takeaways:[2:10] What is scoliosis [4:00] Scoliosis is more common in teenage girls [5:50] A healthier alternative to X-rays[7:10] The serious ramifications of scoliosis in the elderly [9:40] Dire consequences of untreated scoliosis [15:40] Strengthening the weak side[21:45] Temporarily weakening the strong side[25:50] Understanding the imbalance of muscles[32:20] Strengthening your back muscles[38:00] Ending surgery as the dominant treatment [44:15] Thai Chi for osteoperoses [51:30] Outcomes depend on compliance Where to Find Our Guest:Sciatica.orgmanhattanphysicalmedicine.com12 Poses vs Osteoporosis Yoga for OsteoporosisHealing Yoga Postures Memorable Quotes:“It can so distort your chest, that your heart can't fill up with blood, so it's pumping alright, but it's not pumping as much blood, therefore the other cells of your body, which include your liver, your spleen, and your kidneys, and of course your brain, they don't get as much blood as they did before, and therefore they don't get as much oxygen.” [9:47] -Dr.Fishman“These muscles are not the dexterous muscles of your fingers, the coordinated muscles of your muscles of your vocal cords. They are not such fine muscles, their strong suit is that they pull, and they endure, they persist. You know, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, your back doesn't hurt, most of the time, why? Because those muscles are so darn strong and so well created to sustain the pressure that they do so.” [32:55] -Dr.FishmanTo learn more about me and to stay connected, click on the links below:Instagram: @debirobinsonwellnessWebsite: DebiRobinson.comHealthy Gut Healthy Bones ProgramScotland Retreat 2023Cultural Immersion to Bali 2023

Today, we are honored and happy to speak with Kim Praitano, the CEO of Gilda's Club in South Florida! Each year, Gilda's Club helps 5000 people affected by cancer. Kim is an interesting person with a fascinating story to tell! She has tons of experience and many health insights to share! She is joining us to talk about Gilda's Club, how they use meetings to help raise funds and awareness, and how Krav Maga has helped her become a better leader. We hope you enjoy listening to our conversation with Kim Praitano! Bio: Kim Praitano, MSW, CFRE Kim Praitano is the President & CEO of Gilda's Club South Florida, serving over 5000 people affected by cancer annually, addressing social determinants of health, and providing support services, renowned cancer education, and healthy lifestyle programs throughout South Florida. Kim has held executive leadership positions for nearly 40 years, working with various nonprofit organizations, and served as CEO of Dynamic Leadership Concepts, a consulting firm serving nonprofit organizations through professional development and capacity-building. Kim's family Kim's grandparents immigrated from Italy in the World War 2 era. Although her family owned nothing materially, they had strong values and a good work ethic. They taught Kim that quitting is never an option. That gave her the grit she needed to move forward in life. Education Education was always important to Kim. It was her refuge. Leadership After starting work, Kim constantly took leadership programs. She felt constant learning was vital because she knew where she wanted to go. A nonprofit leader Kim wanted to lead a nonprofit regardless of the services provided because they are all interrelated and important. She knew that a good leader was the key to the success of any organization. Funding Nonprofits do not necessarily get funded for infrastructures like human resources, finance, marketing, and advertising. Kim got certifications continuously to do those things because she knew no one would provide funds for them. Harvard Kim went to Harvard because they had leadership programs for nonprofit executives. Outcome Measurement was a program she found meaningful. Another was Excellence in Nonprofit Governance because, in a successful organization, the nonprofit leader will work collaboratively with the board to lead the organization. Board members Some of the Gilda's Club board members are experts in the areas Kim is not. They help create the vision and experience for the organization and assist Kim in overcoming any organizational challenges. Gilda's Club's mission The mission of Gilda's Club is to ensure that anyone impacted by cancer gets empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by the community. The community support part motivates Kim and many other Gilda employees to get up and go off to work every day. Servant leadership For Kim, servant leadership is ensuring she gives her staff members all the tools they need to do their jobs. The Gilda's Club activities Cancer patients require more than just medical treatment for good health outcomes. Many people also need assistance with things like housing, food, transportation, mental health insurance, physical fitness, and follow-up treatments. The Gilda's Club provides healthy living classes, like yoga, Thai Chi, and cooking, to help people do better after their clinical treatments. They also provide cancer education, mental health counseling, and support groups for cancer patients and their family members. Covid For two years, Covid interrupted cancer patients' regular screening schedules. Getting people screened has become significantly important now, especially in communities of color. Women of Color They have a Women of Color initiative at Gilda's Club where they help people re-partner to their screening via a mobile mammography health clinic. Events Gilda's Club has three major annual fundraisers to raise money and awareness and get people to start building a relationship with them. Krav Maga Fitness has always been important to Kim. Krav Maga gives her confidence and keeps her mind and body healthy. It strengthens her as a leader and helps her operate better as a CEO. Yoga teacher, Thai Chi instructor, world traveler and my friend, Lizandra, shares how to be her own best friend AND stay connected to friends around the world, even while living a nomadic lifestyle. She talks about how it feels being a single, childless woman whose friends mostly have kids and husbands. We talk about guy friends and how to be a great house guest, and you'll also hear about the harrowing accident that left her partially paralyzed. She reveals how friendship played a prominent role in her amazing recovery journey, and also explains her need for boundary setting--by inventing the hashtag 'no new friends,' which comes in handy for those times when we really need quiet solitude and just can't squeeze any new relationships into our lives. Lori Ann King is on a mission to inspire you to live a life of true health, love, laughter, and freedom! She is the Amazon best-selling author of Come Back Strong, Balanced Wellness after Surgical Menopause, and a two-time contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series. Lori didn't start off being a writer or an author as this journey came to her a bit later in life. She found that she was communicating best when writing and it was her way to process those things around her easily. In 2014/ 2015, Lori experienced some health challenges and with her doctor, decided to remove an ovarian ovary and ovarian cyst. She went into the surgery expecting to be right back at it in no time but that's not what happened. She woke up having a full hysterectomy and a full ovariectomy which means that everything was gone. With this procedure, you pretty much lose all your hormones so that puts you immediately into surgical menopause. Lori thought that menopause was night sweats and hot flashes but she wasn't prepared for all the other symptoms that came: insomnia, the rollercoaster of emotions, weight gain, and brain fog. She immediately felt out of balance. It was by researching online and getting involved with other blogs that she discovered other people writing on this topic and started to contribute with her writings. She started to share her story to be an inspiration to others and it was then that she started to write and she kept on writing! She found that through writing, she was connecting with women globally which was very humbling. Menopause is a global issue and we need to find a way to deal with these setbacks so we can find our balance and come back stronger! Lori goes on to share her experience of waking up and not being in control of her emotions and being frustrated by the pain and bloating in her body. Little did Lori know that this would be years of trying out how to feel good again in her body. This involved some hormone therapy and a lot of lifestyle changes as well. She really had to ask herself “ Is this how I want to feel for the rest of my life or can I change it? “. Since writing the book, Lori has connected with women all over the world who have thanked her for writing her story as they feel less alone. We as women want to be seen, heard, and be part of a community and not feel so alone. We talk about how her book has helped women who are going to be getting a hysterectomy and what they can do for themselves as it relates to hormone therapy and other modalities. She also has many suggestions on how to enlist the help of a friend or family as support prior to a procedure and how they can support you in the overall journey. Lori was very fortunate that the doctor she was working with at the time was very knowledgeable in hormone therapy and felt that it is an art and science. The Science part is the testing and the art is listening to the patient or symptoms and working together down the path together. Her doctor empowered her to play a role in her health. She shares that if you are not vibing with your doctor and something doesn't feel right then find someone that has the same belief or that treats you as a powerful part of the partnership and collaboration. Lori supports her community with her course: Balanced Wellness During Menopause and coaching. Lori shares that she can't go back and change what happened to her but perhaps she can help ease someone's pain through their situation. Her course is born out of the book and helps women get through any type of situation, illness, surgery, or setback. The concepts are specific to all menopause and not just surgical menopause. Lori goes on to share about another book that is coming out in September 2021 which is called: Transform. It's a book about using your mind to transform your body. It comes from her and her husband's journey. And if that isn't enough there is another book called: Wheels to Wellbeing which is also being released that same month. This book helps us to understand the spokes to your wellbeing so that you can live a more blanched life. We discuss how Lori and her husband continue to make intentional goals and be one another's support in tough and challenging situations. They have a beautiful relationship that offers a lot of support and you'll love hearing their story! Lori asks the important question. What does healthy mean to you? What does movement mean to you? It's finding those things that you love to do, and define what healthy means to you that's so important to your overall success. We need to give ourselves grace and love during this change. So often it comes from a place of hate and we need to come from a place of self-love. Lori wants to live every single day as healthy and she can because there are people in her life that are counting on her! And she needs the energy to do that! :) She encourages us to find the right movement that works for us and listen to our bodies. Sometimes we may feel like being more physical and other times we may need something less like yoga or Thai Chi. Be curious and open to finding what works best for you. It doesn't need to be the same routine every day to be a form of self-care. Listen to yourself and honor what comes up for you, that's self-care.

Catherine and I met in London about 7 years ago and even if there where months when we just each had our own priorities, we kept being friends and lately yoga actually got us closer, even if through Zoom! This chat is a chat between friends, full of interesting stories and lots of laughter, but also lots of useful information, especially for people who are interested in martials arts and yoga. Catherine told us about her studies, her past jobs; the very cool experience of being part of an all girl death metal band; her studies; how and why she came to the UK (I’m not going to spoil it, but there is a love story in there too and talking about spoiling, I once accidentally told Catherine how Anna Karenina ends while she was only half way through the book). We then went on to talk about martial arts (Kung Fu, Thai Chi, Kickboxing – I might have mentioned Kung Fu Panda OUPS); the future plans for a charity aimed at elderly people or people who can’t afford paying for Thai Chi and Yoga: Wellbeing Mindfulness & Martial Arts. Catherine explained more about the world of yoga and how it’s not just the physical exercise that we always associate yoga with, she talked with passion about teaching yoga and always learning and improving. We made fun of our own accents and mistakes in English, Catherine also revealed that she knows a few words in Romanian, that was super cute! We, of course, talked about wine, literature, movies and all sort of heart warming subjects. Sit back, relax and enjoy this episode, especially the part where Catherine talks us through a very relaxing breathing technique, you will be amazed to know how a small practice like this can improve your mood so much. We all want to maintain our independence and lifestyle as long as we can, but for seniors, that can be difficult. Memory can slip and activity can wane, but the biggest challenge is actually being alone. Senior isolation has always been a problem, and it has gotten even worse in the past 12 months. There are great services out there that can send a home health worker to the house or even a "grandkid on-demand," but what about the in-between times? That's where Cutii by Care Clever comes in.This robotic companion combines the best aspects of a telepresence robot with the voice control capabilities of a digital assistant. It is designed to help relieve some of the stresses created by social isolation by creating virtual environments in which to interact with other people. For example, during CES, a Thai Chi class was held through the platform. While other virtual class platforms exist, Cutii sets itself apart because you can easily interact with your classmates. This makes the experience a lot closer to what it would be like to be in a real class. In addition, Cutii has the ability to interact with things around the house, including smart devices. This is because of its wide range of communication technologies. Cutii can turn on lights, check doors and windows, and more. You can also summon Cutii to your location with your voice, which is possible because of the onboard sensors which create a map of the house. About Colin Hoobler: Colin is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and he's been a Doctor of Physical Therapy for 19 years. He is an author and trainer, the creator and host of the action 30 podcast, as well as the fitness show on PBS. He's a medical expert for his local NBC affiliate. By the way, injured senior community he is out in Oregon. So I'm here in Baltimore. So he is literally on the other coast. He's a health writer for The Oregonian Newspaper and he's the Founder and CEO of S3 Balance LLC. He will talk a little bit about that later on in the episode. Well, welcome to the show Collin, it's so good to have you here.In this episode, Steve and Colin discuss:1. How serious of a problem is sitting and remaining sedentary to the aging population?Sitting carries the same or greater risk, an actually greater risk than smoking a pack of cigarettes every day. So if you're a non-smoker, but you decide to be sedentary and sit, you know, eight to 10 hours a day, which most seniors do, unfortunately, especially if you're in a community like Memory Care assisted living, then basically if you're a nonsmoker, you are adding risk to your life. It's basically like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. On top of that, you're talking about an increased risk of suicide, increased risk of chronic pain, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, diabetes, I mean, the list is so long, you're definitely going to fall more. Worst of all, that there's a strong link between sitting that much and becoming disabled. So you will no longer be able to care for yourself. 2. You've got a lot of seniors who say, Well, I have to sit a lot because my knees ache, or I've got a back problem. So it's just better to sit. So if I don't sit and I stand, I'm putting myself at risk for a fall and a broken hip, do you hear that a lot from your patients?Yeah, I hear that a lot, even from non-patients, especially independent living, where they're supposed to be independent, and staff is not supposed to be able to touch the residents. So they need to be able to get up on their own, they got to be able to walk on their own. Saying that, well, I can't stand up, because I'm afraid this will happen, is extremely understandable. I understand that the fear is there. But let's look at why that's the case. That's the case because you are sitting too much. So yes, there is a greater risk initially, for a fall, there's a greater risk for discomfort initially. But what I see 100% of the time, over and over again, is you do it once, even if you have somebody stand up for 20 to 30 seconds, and they sit back down because they just got tired, the next time they get up, even if it's a minute or two later, they get up faster, and then they don't want to sit down. So then they're up to two to 300% more time, the second time, and it's just this thing that just keeps going downhill. It's like a snowball. So really, the key is, how do you just initiate that process?3. How do we get the senior and elderly community to change the behavior? It depends on the person. But there is one term that tends to resonate with seniors more than anything else and that is wheelchair. Yeah, and if you want to make yourself disabled, so you want to make it, so you have to depend on others, which that whole concept is very painful, not just for older adults, but young, middle-aged old kids, there's something about losing your autonomy that is devastating. From a human standpoint, that is really, it's not tolerable. 4. Is there a blood test for inactivity? No, but there are tests for balance, right? There are tests for A1C, which is measured for diabetes, right? But do you want to use A1C's? Yep, got to keep that low. There are other tests that the more you sit, you will become less and less independent? Do you like using a walker sit more and that will turn into a wheelchair eventually,5. Do you think that television has anything to do with it? A lot of times if they if they're watching a TV program that doesn't initiate any movement, that there's literally sitting there watching TV for four or five hours, they're like, well, I guess I got to get to go to the bathroom, they come back and then they reset another four or five hours. That's what we're talking about that deficit they got to get up. 6. Should the senior and elderly community be doing exercises more like Tai Chi or gentle yoga?Yeah, Thai Chi is great, that kind of thing. But for Free, you can go to s3balanced.com, and it's free, you can look and click on exercises and there are over 40 or 50 videos of exercises, they could do another using the s3 device, you don't have to have the s3 device, you can do it with a loved one we're, we're a loved one just stands in with the arms out and is touching you so that to prevent you from falling, and you know what will happen, you won't need that person after doing that for too long. It's extremely powerful, very fulfilling to see that happen. Every time you do it.7. So 1 to 2 million of our senior and elderly population are in assisted living or nursing homes. Do you think there's any responsibility on the part of the nursing homes or the assisted living facilites to be a little more proactive in getting their residents or the patients to move around a little bit more? Not a little accountable, a lot of accountability? As it stands right now, if Steve owns his own memory care unit, or assisted living facility, the law states that you only need to provide activities, there's no rule that you need to educate or get people up. So as long as you provide these types of services, that's enough for the law. But it's not enough for me and it's not enough for the residents and their families, because they still sit all day long. So I think the first step with these communities, whether it's assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, they owe it to the residents to number one, they got to educate them. So they make an informed decision. Rather than are you how are you? Are you 100%? comfortable, great stay sitting there? No, you've got to find out, Sharon, what do you like to do every day? Well, we've got to get you up and doing that every day. Because if you don't use it, you lose it. And I just started a coalition, by the way, just did that last week, it's called the Coalition for Active Residents in Engagement and Care and I'm going to start legislating, I'm going to start pushing for legislation to hold these communities more accountable. We need to have stricter standards for education to avoid that ignorance and devastating policies that they have now just well, if they get up, that's fine. If they don't, that's fine too.8. Do you think the role of medication plays a part of this sedentary lifestyle for people in their 60s 70s and 80s?Yeah, you need to look no further than the research on that. The research says that the vast majority of older adults are grossly over medicated. For example, I think hormone replacement therapy or blood pressure medication, well, a lot of these caught cause fatigue, a lot of them can and they state and these people are on the medications for far too long. The doctors are not proactive enough to not just get them we to wean them off the medication, but to do so in a way that couples it with the most powerful medication we have, which is exercise and standing. So that the medication piece it's the responsibility to have the doctors the geriatricians there are some fantastic geriatricians that they will only medicate to a point knowing that they're going to motivate the person to exercise and then that exercise will take the place of medication, but that doesn't happen very often the research says that less than 25% of the time that physicians even mentioned, exercise, even still the elderly, it's just not something that's done. So we have to change this whole, it's like racism, right? We've got to start in order to get away from that you got to face it and acknowledge that it is a problem. Age is a big problem. We stigmatize weak, we pigeonhole people, well, you're old. So you need to just, you need to just not burden me with your problems, sit there, and then just enjoy your last years of life, your last years of life needs to be spent in vertical, not horizontal, life's too valuable to skip.9. Do you see now that the individuals who are in their 50s might be a little more open to more activity? Or are not as sedentary? Yeah, but it's a generational thing. The older generation, they were during the age range, right, that occurred before the fitness boom. So it just wasn't really the thing, especially women. So they don't really, a lot of them tend not to have that mindset, but they're smart people, they're influential, they follow what each other, do what they do and so if you can get them to motivate each other, especially in communities, get one person to lead the classes and please don't do it in sitting, that's defeating the whole purpose. I mean, how many times you go into these communities, and there's five chairs in a circle, and I'm just, I just shake my head and go, what's the point? I mean, it may increase circulation a little bit but all it really is, therefore is to appease the administration, to be able to say we offer activities, it really doesn't do much of anything, it doesn't reduce falls, it doesn’t do anything. 10. When somebody has been used to sitting nine hours a day, when they begin to transition to trying to be more active and standing. Is it okay for them to start with a walker? Or is crutches or just something to get them up on their feet?Yeah, it depends on how low level they are. If they can walk with a walker, now they need to walk with a walker more. So rather than just going to and from the bathroom, or just around the house, it's time to start thinking about leaving the house or doing going around the house more. But it's just it's like putting money in the bank only more powerful than money because once you lose your independence, when and you can feel it happening, you know, you start to realize, boy, things are getting harder, it's already getting harder to tie my shoes. It's getting harder to go and I'm becoming more nervous going to the airport or leaving my home. It's starting to happen, and you got to do something."Your’re body is a slave to your brain." — Colin HooblerTo find out more about the National Injured Senior Law Center or to set up a free consultation go to https://www.injuredseniorhotline.com/ or call 855-622-6530 Connect with Colin Hoobler: Twitter: @losetheweightFacebook: Colin HooblerEmail: ch@action30.com CONNECT WITH STEVE H. Everyone will remember the first time they saw the Northern Lights dance across the night sky. For some it will have been a deeply moving moment, for others, time to capture a photograph. For cultures and communities going back 100's of years the aurora borealis have meant many different things, from the spirits of the dead being whisked away to the omens of the Gods. Whatever your belief, it is impossible to not look at this mythical dance of colours in the night sky as anything other than beautiful. Plasma scientist, Dr Melanie Windridge has devoted herself to understanding the science of the aurora borealis and recording the human connection with them. In this episode of Brainwaves, Melanie explains why there are different colours, how the dancing waves of the lights are a kind of earthly Thai Chi and while the aurora might be beautiful it is actually vital to protect us from violent space weather as we become a more and more tech dependant world.
