California has a network of 124 marine protected areas, and in October the state's Fish and Game Commission takes up 15 proposals that could change it. The proposals came out of the network's first 10-year management review, an adaptive management process written into the law so the network could respond to shifting fish populations, a warming climate, and evolving public values. Anupa Asokan, founder of Fish On, explains what that review looked like from inside the room. Anupa is a marine scientist, angler, and surfer who started Fish On to give conservation-minded anglers and spearfishers a voice. She describes a review where the state asked the public to submit petitions instead of assessing the whole network itself, where early agency evaluations left out climate change and equitable access until people pushed for them, and where a public meeting on tribally sponsored petitions drew offensive comments that, she says, no state official condemned. She also credits the Ocean Protection Council for weighing in with its own recommendations, including a climate lens and support for some tribally led proposals. Andrew and Anupa also talk about starting a conservation nonprofit with the help of a fiscal sponsor, why MPAs act as an insurance policy for fisheries management, and what data the state could share first to lower the temperature between groups. The Commission hears MPA petitions October 15 and 16 in Sacramento. Anupa lays out how to send a letter, join the meeting, and find other groups working on the petitions, and every link is in the show notes. The 2026 midterms are approaching, and there is growing pressure on conservatives to sit out elections, reject Republican candidates, or pursue some kind of political accelerationism because Republicans have not accomplished everything conservatives hoped they would.In this episode of Conversations That Matter, I make the case for why Christian conservatives should generally vote Republican in the midterms, while also explaining why voting is not a substitute for the much more important work of Christian discipleship and social renewal.The key distinction is between practical politics and pragmatism. Pragmatism means changing your moral standards to achieve a desired political outcome. Practical judgment means recognizing the political circumstances you actually inhabit and using the tools available to you without changing your moral convictions. As I argue in the episode, morality does not change, but political circumstances and available options do.I also discuss the temptation to abandon the Republican Party because it is imperfect, the dangers of accelerationism, what the experience of Europe can teach us, my own decision not to vote for Donald Trump in 2016, and why that calculation would be different in a competitive state.Finally, I look at what the Trump administration and the MAGA movement have actually accomplished on issues including immigration, DEI, abortion, and foreign policy, and argue that conservatives should consider whether to build on those gains rather than simply destroy the political apparatus because it has not delivered everything they wanted.The question is not whether Republicans are perfect. A GOP senator leaned over and told Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) how to vote. The clerk still couldn't hear him. This is day three back for an 84-year-old senator after more than 90 days away — a fall, pneumonia, two months in the hospital, and a wheelchair through the Capitol. The Senate Agriculture Committee had already stalled the farm bill without him. On Wednesday, they needed that vote. So they brought him in, called his name, and the country watched Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) lean in with “no” while McConnell quietly said “aye,” then had to say it again louder because nobody caught it the first time. The bill cleared 12-11, party lines. The question is why Republicans keep pretending this is just a tough recovery and not a fitness problem.
