Now, as a coach, I have seen how powerful questions can make a difference in helping a client shift their perspective about a situation or even themselves. This episode is going to be focused on helping you understand the importance of asking the right questions as a leader, whether that be in a meeting, in a one on one, in a presentation, or in Whatever you're in, you can use questions to really drive different conversations. Hey everyone, thanks for tuning into this episode of the LDS Mission Podcast. Today I wanted to discuss the importance of asking powerful questions as a missionary. While our one job is to offer thoughts with love, I've realized we can do even more by also asking questions with compassion and love. By understanding people's perspectives through questions, we can better meet their needs. I shared some examples of how assumptions without questions can cause discomfort or misunderstandings. My advice is to directly and humbly ask people what they need in a way that makes them feel heard. As missionaries, we should also ask ourselves loving questions instead of self-criticism. And don't forget to learn from those you serve. Whether you're prepping to serve, currently serving, or a returned missionary, I hope these insights help as you strive to offer thoughts and gain understanding through questions, with the goal of lifting others. My husband and I recently went golfing for the first time in a while, and let's just say, my irons weren't cooperating. This episode is an engaging and insightful conversation with Kate Heartsong, a confidence coach and author of two important books: Deeply We Are One and Humanity's Cry for Change. Her books provide valuable insights and ways that you can make a difference in the world today. She spoke about having to overcome the traumas of a difficult childhood, and how that led her to transformations based in spirituality. In coaching people on confidence, she says that she always seeks to empower people to know their own greatness. And one of the simple tools she uses is to have the client write down 3-5 things they can acknowledge about themselves and the good things they have in their lives, and then continue to notice at least 1-2 other things or new things each day. We talked about oneness as it relates to both of her books and the importance of everyone's interconnections to others. We also discussed how critical it is for people to raise their consciousness because that helps raise the collective consciousness, which is the only way the world can heal it's very big problems. Effective communication between a coach and client is often overcomplicated unnecessarily. It is the simple questions that help clients dig deeper within themselves for the right answer rather than a perfectly crafted inquisition by the coach. Open-ended questions are essential to gain insight into the client's thoughts and feelings, and it's important to understand the client's roles and responsibilities without projecting one's own biases onto them. Coaches should focus on powerful questions to expand knowledge and bring about change. Trust the process of coaching – it is a simple dialogue that can lead a coaching session in unexpected directions. Noticing important cues such as pauses or shifts in body language, tonality, and emotion is a result of being present in the moment with a client. Effective questioning skills can help coaches create meaningful interactions with clients; however, it's not as complicated as one might think. Simple, open-ended questions are best for gaining insight into clients' thoughts and feelings. Coaches should remain present and focus on their clients; approaching the session with topics in mind can help guide the conversation, but one must be mindful not to project one's own biases onto the client while also allowing space for the client to lead the session and determine what will serve their needs best at that moment. Noticing cues such as pauses or changes in body language can provide valuable information about clients' emotions and underlying motivations. Coaches who are able to ask powerful questions and expand their client's, as well as their own, knowledge, are more likely to bring about change. This week's Work from the Inside Out podcast is a little different than usual. Two of my previous guests, Corey Blake and Gen Georget, returned to share the work they have been doing to help people clarify their purpose through the transformative powers of storytelling. Corey and Gen lead The Roundtable Storytelling Academy, which offers a series of transformational online courses that helps participants find their superpowers and articulate their origin story so they can step into their purpose, and redefine the relationship they hold to the narrative of their lives. Leadership is exponentially better when accompanied by the skill of asking powerful questions.   If you are a problem-solver like me, you might be driving to solutions too quickly and people start running to you to solve the problem instead of taking the ball and running with it. That can be tiring!!! And it limits the team's potential when leaders become a bottleneck to solving problems. Questions have the power to turn the tables – to change that conversation.  When I married a scientist who makes a living asking questions to find solutions to seemingly unsolvable things, that's when I saw this question-asking skill in action. He would answer every question with another question. Only problem in a marriage that can be rather irritating. Maybe in leadership, too!  Observing this question-asking skill in my husband was like a confrontation to my well practiced problem solving leadership skills. I felt like it slowed us down every time we were trying to make a decision and get this show on the road. My drive to get to a decision and take action had the potential to make me skip steps or miss out on important information that would help make a better decision. I actually have become a keen observer of people who ask questions. I admire them and want to become better and better at asking powerful questions that help others move toward their own solutions or decisions. One of my observations is that Jesus in the gospels asked a lot of powerful questions  …. EXPAND SELF-AWARENESS You know, those kinds of questions that get people thinking. The ones that turn the mirror around so you see a truer reflection of who you are. They have the power to confront lies with truth, blow up limitations that are holding us back or turn around those false beliefs that keep us trapped.  Like when Jesus said to the man at the pool of Bethesda, “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:6) or to the two blind men in Matthew 9:28 when Jesus asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” In both instances, the questions require the hearer to look inward and do some self-assessment.  CHALLENGE OUR ASSUMPTIONS Another kind of question that Jesus asked that always gets my attention is those questions when he challenged assumptions. We are all set in our ways and have our own biases – this is the kind of question that unsettles us. They can be confrontive, yet they are gifts because they shake us out of narrow thinking to broaden our perspective Like when Jesus pointed out hypocrisy in the Pharisees about healing on the Sabbath by asking, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or destroy it? (Luke 6:9) OR with the story of the Good Samaritan where he poses the question, “So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” (Lk 10:36). In both situations, Jesus demonstrates the complexity of a situation by sharing a story or a parable and then asks a question that challenges their thinking. INVITING OTHERS IN Just as much as Jesus used questions to confront, he also used questions to invite people into a deeper relationship or understanding. He asked questions that let the disciples think for themselves – to find their own solutions or recap what they had been learning through an experience. Questions that would lead down the path of deeper knowledge and insight. These kinds of questions are an opportunity for us to grow and to expand our thinking. With these questions, Jesus was able to invite participation instead of telling people what to do or think.  When Jesus was having a conversation with the disciples and he asked, “Who do men say that I am?”, they answered him and then he takes it deeper and asks, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-29). He often used these kinds of inviting questions when he was talking with the disciples.  LET'S ASK MORE QUESTIONS! I am not saying Jesus always used questions. He gave answers, too. He offered a whole lot of teaching. Sometimes he told the disciples what to do. I'm just amazed at how he used questions so artfully.  As you have probably guessed by now: I am intrigued by questions. I certainly like answers!!! It's still my default >> and I am learning to enhance my default with more questions.  That's why I am inviting listeners like you to ask questions so together we can take it deeper and find the questions behind the question. Because, there usually isn't one right answer. Our leadership is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Listen to the episode to get a question asking exercise that will help you become more savvy in asking more powerful questions. Write down questions as they come up – capture them like brainstorming without judgment, without grammar editing, just “brain dump”. If you want to make it extra challenging. The most powerful person in the room is actually the person that asks the most powerful questions. In this episode, we talk about what impact asking a powerful question can have. Plus we give you three simple hacks to turn a poopy question into a powerful one.  Erin's birthday was last week, so along with some other friends, her and Nicole had a last-minute rendezvous, which just so happened to align with national Pina Cola day.  Nicole has a birthday quiz for Erin, and it's NOT about guys she dated in her 20's...or Patrick Swayze...though he manages to steal the show for a little while. They recap and discuss Nicole's solo episode from last week, with some reflection and insights into interviewing and recording yourself.  On the subject of solo Nicole, she tells the story of her recent trip to a Lorean Spa and being "Scrubbed down by a really strong Korean Lady." A few weeks ago my husband and I spent the night at his brothers home. He and his wife invited us to join them the next morning for their early morning scripture study. I was interested to share this time with another family to see how this process worked for them. We each took a turn reading a few verses from the assigned CFM reading, but after the reading something magical happened. His wife asked a question. The question she asked was NOT, How did the spirit speak to Oliver Cowdery, nor was it even What are the different ways the spirit can speak to us? , but instead she asked, “What experiences have you had where the Holy Ghost has spoken to you? “,. Wow! Was that ever a power packed questions. That one question spurred a discussion that continued far longer than it should have as some of the kids had to get ready for school, but each of us shared and listened to each other's experiences, all of us were edified. This experience reinforced the idea that not all questions are created equal. How can we turn an average question into a powerful question? What are the principles around questions that I need to understand to help me ask better questions? In today's episode, Keith Johnson, this very brother in law , in whose home we stayed, shares his journey of he has learned to harness the power of the question. I recently read the book ‘The Inner Game of Tennis’ by Tim Gallwey. It had been on my list for a while. It wasn’t just to improve my tennis game, it was to see what the principles were about. Around the time of reading it, and posting some insights from it, Jeffrey Lipsius connected in. He’s been using the approaches from the book not just for improving his Tennis game but to become a better sales person. He’s been so successful with this that he’s wrote a book about it, and set up his own program to teach others how to be an Inner game Sales expert. Questions have been the cornerstone of education, science and invention since the beginning of time. The greatest inventors and scientists, like Edison and Einstein where famous for the questions they would pose. And, of course, questions have tremendous value to everyday life. Asking powerful questions is one of the best ways to help all types of people wrestle with truth and give them an opportunity to better understand truth. Excellent organizational leaders must learn to communicate clearly, compellingly, and cogently. Powerful questions can be one of the best ways to facilitate effective communication and therefore release individual and organizational potential.
