As creators, many of us start with a hunch, a curiosity, or a simple “let's see where this goes.” Today's guest, Dexter Zhuang, embodies this experimental mindset. He's the founder of Portfolio Path and a fractional product leader who's spent the last 12 years leading teams across the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Latin America at companies like Dropbox and Xendit. In 2023, Dexter launched Money Abroad—a newsletter exploring personal finance for expats—as an experiment. Over time, it evolved into Portfolio Path, an education platform that helps high-performers grow their portfolio careers and manage their money with intention. Today, Portfolio Path reaches over 7,000 subscribers. Along the way, Dexter has leaned into audience surveys, embraced feedback, and navigated the common insecurities that come with publishing your ideas publicly. In this episode, we unpack that journey—from testing an idea to building something that resonates deeply with a growing community.     In this episode, we cover:    (00:00) Introduction (02:02) Starting a newsletter as an experiment  (06:11) Pivoting the newsletter  (11:10) Reviewing Dexter's past content  (16:26) Insecurities when building the newsletter  (20:49) Content is a stepping stone for the audience  (23:24) Conducting surveys with your audience  (30:52) Underrated parts of building a newsletter  (37:26) Actionable Takeaways  Connect with Dexter Zhuang   Newsletter: https://www.theportfoliopath.com/subscribe  Website: https://www.dexterzhuang.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dexterzhuang  Connect with Cheryl Lau   Website: https://cheryllau.com  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@cheryltheory  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cheryltheory LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheryllau ANNOTATIONS - The Newsletter    The edits that got cut from the podcast. From working in his family's Michigan restaurant to running his own tech company, Dexter Zhuang's story shows that hard work and smart planning can take you where you want to go. Dexter is the founder of Money Abroad, an online education platform that helps high-performers design their independent money paths. He started his career in San Francisco but has lived and worked across Southeast Asia and Latin America for the past six years. With over 10 years of experience building products and teams at public companies like Dropbox and scaling startups like Xendit, Dexter turned a side project into his main gig. In this episode, he shares that many startups, including his, come from scratching a personal itch.  His work has been featured in global outlets like Business Insider, CBS, US News & World Report, and Tech in Asia. Now, Dexter runs his own company, helps other startups, and offers advice based on his extensive experience. His journey, which includes guiding companies to go public and graduating from Dartmouth College, shows that with dedication and a willingness to take risks, you can build a successful career in tech and become your own boss. Here are the key takeaways from the conversation: Skills in product management and professional networks boost confidence when starting a business. Financial stability allows focus on the venture without immediate money worries. Early business exposure, through family or personal experiences, shapes future entrepreneurial paths. Balancing consulting work with main business projects maintains financial stability while growing the primary venture. An experimental approach helps identify effective content and strategies. Testing ideas and adapting based on feedback refine the business model. Establishing a strong online presence is crucial but challenging. Being active on professional networks increases visibility. A supportive community is vital for entrepreneurial success. Engaging with a network provides insights and opportunities. Understanding and responding to target audience needs is essential. This guides product development and keeps the business customer-focused. To launch a new season of Digital Transformation & Leadership we've got a special episode recorded live from the MoneyPot podcast studio at Money20/20 Asia in Bangkok. Danny talks to Tessa Wijaya the COO at Indonesian fintech Xendit, the expanding payments gateway. On top of being a driving force for the company's growth, Tessa is also a passionate advocate for more women in tech; she initiated Xendit's Women in Tech Indonesia program, where entrepreneurs and tech professionals share experiences in workshops and digital forums. Unlisted Xendit doesn't disclose its profits, but it has clearly gained the confidence of many venture capital firms. In September 2021, Xendit became a unicorn after it raised $150 million in series C funding, bumping up its valuation to $1 billion. Xendit helps businesses get what's due to them from payment channels such as credit cards, online wallets, QR codes and other tools for electronic purchases. Xendit's website says that in fewer than five minutes, it can set up an account for a business to start receiving digital payments. In Indonesia, the company competes with Doku and Goto's Midtrans. From fewer than 10 employees at the start, the company now has more than 900. Xendit, which initially focused on Indonesia, has expanded to the Philippines and is eyeing other parts of Southeast Asia. In the episode Danny and Tessa discuss: How Xendit has navigated local payment preferences and integrated them with existing payment infrastructures to facilitate seamless transactions. Many individuals in emerging markets may be skeptical of new financial technologies or lack the necessary knowledge to use them effectively. How Xendit has gone about overcoming these challenges. The fintech industry is highly competitive, with both local and international players vying for market share. Fintech startups in emerging markets face competition from traditional financial institutions, established tech companies, and other startups. How has Xendit has overcome this to stand out in the market. Then in part 2 of the episode Tessa talks through her entrepreneurial journey sharing what she is most proud of, the biggest risk she's taken in her career, how you go about finding strong mentors, how to find the right work/life balance, and her big career lesson. An entrepreneur at heart, CEO and Founder of Xendit featured in Forbes’ 30 Under 30, shares his secrets to start-up success - from finding the right people to setting bigger things in motion. In this episode, we sit down with Moses as he talks about how Xendit started and how he weaved its success. Leading an award-winning start-up digital infrastructure and payment gateway in Southeast Asia, he speaks about his experiences from his days at Berkeley doing 24-hour hackathons, to expanding and launching in emerging markets, and to set out to accomplish more and bigger things. *Episode Quotes:* ----------------- *On starting the framework and finding the right people:* “Similar thing with the Co-founder, I said, these are certain qualities I want, most important being commitment. Someone that you can build things with; you can argue with. Who actually makes the decisions? How committed are people going to be when things go badly? So those were the dimensions I cared about. And I tried to test that through a few examples.” *On setting up a business in Southeast Asia:* “I had no idea how hard it was going to be. I didn't understand fully. I knew it in theory because there are books about it, but I had no idea what it looks like in practice. What it's turned out to be is a mix of working with the right investors who can help navigate these dynamics, building relationships. Asia is all about relationships and building the right relationships.” *On dealing with potential disappointments:* “What we said to ourselves as we tried to be really rational, I think this is the Asian side of me, but it's to get rid of your emotions. And you have to be really logical and rational and say, ‘ Okay, all right, it failed. What's the next best thing that we can try ?’ Iterating and believing that if we kept iterating, we would eventually find something that would find a product-market fit.” *Show Links:* ------------- * *LinkedIn* ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/moseslo/ ) * *Xendit* ( https://www.xendit.co/en/ ) * *High Growth Handbook by Elad Gil* ( https://www.amazon.com/High-Growth-Handbook-Elad-Gil/dp/1732265100 ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations
