If you can believe it I've gone my whole life without seeing the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie. This is yet another one to check off on the list of nostalgia watches. I remember watching the tv series in the first season but boy did this world really expand! Me and Mikey are back to talk the ultimate camp movie about mid 30s teens of Angel Grove that somehow everyone knows they are superheroes? We talk about the film being saved by a campy villain, the amazing fashion coordination, and our childhood memories of the tv series.off-topic rants include: commercials on streaming being a scam, Christopher Walken as Ivan Ooze?---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Power corrupts, and absolute power transforms heroes into the very monsters they swore to destroy. Go Go Loser Ranger masterfully subverts the traditional tokusatsu genre by revealing a dark truth: the beloved Divine Dragon Rangers subjugated the monster invasion years ago, forcing creatures to act as weekly villains to maintain their hero status.Season 2 takes this premise to thrilling new heights as mysterious figures emerge from the shadows. Hwalipon broadcasts forbidden truths about the Ranger Force, while Green Squadron hunts the remaining boss monsters. When Angel Usukubo of the Monster Protection Society is revealed to be half-monster—the daughter of an exiled boss monster—the line between human and monster blurs further. Meanwhile, our protagonist Fighter D continues his infiltration of the Rangers, discovering that his simple mission of vengeance has become hopelessly complicated by human connections. What makes this series exceptional is how it weaves together multiple character motivations for opposing the Ranger Force. Some seek justice, others revenge, while a few harbor world-changing ambitions. The revelation that the Monster Protection Society plans to transform all humans into monsters adds another layer to this morally gray battlefield. Every character feels justified in their actions, leaving viewers constantly questioning who deserves their support.Season 2 delivers a perfect 10/10 experience with its brilliant plot developments, satisfying action sequences, and thought-provoking themes about equality and purpose. It's like the Power Rangers meet The Boys in this twisted world where the heroes seem more villainous than the bad guys. If you're craving a series that challenges conventions while delivering genuine surprises, Go Go Loser Ranger should be at the top of your watchlist. Haim Saban is a Billionaire and it all started with a trip to Japan and only one thing on TV. Way to Go Go Power Rangers. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [OG Law Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast, and we're talking empires today. Stephen Semple's there. I'm here. I'm Dave. Gosh, if anybody that ever thought I was reading the intros like that, it's not okay. Stephen Semple: Mystery solved. Dave Young: Mystery solved. Never the same twice. So Stephen, you told me that we're going to talk about Power Rangers today, and I think of that like an entertainment franchise sort of thing, but also what also toys. Stephen Semple: They are also toys, yes. Dave Young: Was it one of those things where it's like, oh, we're going to invent this toy and then we're going to have an entertainment program to go along with it? Because these things seem to go hand in hand these days. Stephen Semple: Yeah, and they very much was hand in hand. The two came about very much together. And it's got an interesting history to it because it was launched in 1993 and it was created by Haim Saban, who is now a billionaire. He's gone on to do a bunch of things. Not just making a ton of money from this, but if you look him up on Wikipedia, it's estimated he's worth a couple of billion dollars. So he's done well in the entertainment industry. And Hasbro acquired the company back in 2019 for $522 million. So it certainly has contributed to his wealth. And he was a cartoon theme songwriter is where he got his start. Dave Young: Really? Okay. Stephen Semple: He worked on things like Professor Gadget and Masters of the Universe. Those were the things that he was writing theme songs for. Dave Young: Oh, cool. Stephen Semple: But he wanted to create his own property. He always wanted to have his own thing. And at the time, he's on a business trip in Japan, and the only thing you can get on the TV is this Japanese animated series called Choudenshi Bioman, which is part of what they call a Super Sentai series. And Saban was fascinated by this concept of five masked people in spandex fighting monsters. So it's in 1985, and he produces a pilot of Bioman. And the idea of adapting Japanese productions to the US market started basically in 1970 with Marvel. Marvel did a deal with Toei Company to exchange ideas, and Toei created a Japanese version of Spider-Man that did actually really well. And what Marvel tried to bring to the US, not so much. So it sort of worked. Initially, America to Japan was working, but Japan back to America was not working as well. But that didn't stop Saban. So what he decided to do was create a show where they could keep the original action scenes, because the action scenes are complex and hard to film, and then just replace the other scenes with good-looking American actors. So basically when there was the action scenes, it was actually the original Japanese content. And then they would put in... Dave Young: Oh, wow. Stephen Semple: Yeah, he just basically said, okay, here's this Japanese thing. I'll keep the original story. I'll keep the Japanese content. And then where any of the acting is, I'll put in good-looking American actors. Basically that footage is already shot and the toys already existed. So it was also economical to import it to the United States. This was his idea. So he gets a meeting with Toei and Bandai, and they agree. What the heck? Sure. Take our content.

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's September, so that means it's time for our “Mechtember” series, where we cover movies involving all things robotic!! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Bill Mueller discuss Keita Amemiya's 1995 robo-showdown, Mechanical Violator Hakaider!Mechanical violation! Awkward sound mixing! A glowing brain! Cool, glowing hands! An evil, robotic Angel! Excessive use of smoke! Dramatic flower burning! Subtext so overt it's effectively hypertext! Amazing use of dummies! Soldiers that look like the Minions from Despicable Me! Imaginative use of an 80s panel van! Extreme head violence! Bleeding walls! Unexpected arm removal! All this and more in a movie that's possibly TOO ambitious, with incredible designs and special effects, that feels like it was made for fans of RoboCop, Power Rangers, and The Guyver! In addition, Bill shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the original Terminator, while Alex does the same for 1989's Tango & Cash, and the Hong Kong action classics, the Iron Angels trilogy! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris and Tim Gardiner, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from two filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. This episode's guest, Bill Mueller, can be found on Bluesky. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. As they analyze fighting styles, weapons, and special abilities, nostalgic memories of Saturday morning cartoons emerge, leading to a spirited discussion about UPN's golden era of Black television shows. The conversation shifts to boxing's decline as they evaluate the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Mike Tyson exhibition match. "Not all money is worth it," one host argues, questioning why legends risk their legacy for exhibition fights that won't count toward official records. This prompts a deeper conversation about boxing's lost cultural relevance. Things get juicy when we dissect Young Thug's leaked jail phone calls that have revealed shocking comments about fellow artists including Future, Kendrick Lamar, and his alleged infidelity against girlfriend Mariah the Scientist. "These calls are dropping like mixtapes used to in the early 2000s," they observe, questioning who might have a vendetta against the Atlanta rapper. Long before he became famous as the sharp-tongued TV personality who launched the careers of pop stars, Simon Cowell was a rebellious teenager who dropped out of school and started his career in the mailroom at EMI. After a failed business left him nearly bankrupt, he found success by zigging where others zagged—initially by selling hit records based on TV shows like Power Rangers and WrestleMania. Eventually Simon got behind the TV camera himself, where his brutally honest feedback on shows like American Idol and The X Factor made him a household name. Today, through his company Syco Entertainment, Simon continues to discover new talent. His latest challenge: an upcoming Netflix show where he'll try to build a boy band from scratch. This episode was produced by Josh Lash, and edited by Neva Grant, with research by Iman Maani.
