That's one thing that I would recommend for companies that are trying to be more open about that. One thing that I've promoted even in our own company is diversity. There's a lot of women in leadership that are white, expanding that to include women of color and really showing people that you're doing these things and it's not just talk. I think that's really key." RACHEL'S TIP: "Just start talking to people. Ask them one on one, what should I do? If you do that they're much more likely to reach out a hand to you and help you along. If you're in a company and you want to move up or you want to move in a different direction, just let your manager know or let the manager of that department know. Say, "This is what I want to do. Here's where I am now. What do I need to do to get where I want to go and can you help me? That makes the difference."

Artemio “Arty” Rivera, a former designer at 3Pillar Global and current UX Lead at Capital One as well as a leader at Design Thinking DC, joins me today to talk about the learning experiences that grew his career, his insights from applying design thinking, and much more.   When Arty was a child, he started sketching spaceships, aliens, and dresses. Later, as a teenager in 10th grade, he did a personal project in which he learned to make a website and got his first serious taste of technological design. In college at Stanford, he stumbled into the product design program at the d.school. Upon learning that he could do engineering and sketching in on major, he switched to studying product design.   After graduation, he found a job in DC working as a UX designer. In our conversation, you’ll learn about how the beginning of his career went, and some of the early challenges and achievements he experienced. We talk about where the idea and inspiration for the app came from in the first place, what the process of developing the app has been like, and when you can expect to see it in the App Store. Kevin Boyle talks about the origins of the app and the void he and colleagues experienced that it could help fill. Matt Sich, a “unicorn” designer/developer, talks about trial and error during the development process and why iterative design is additive rather than subtractive. Paul Axente is a UX Engineer who took Matt's first concepts and built upon them. Paul talks about 3D Touch interactions in iOS 9, how he envisions future versions of the app employing 3D Touch, and the inspiration for the visual treatment he gave the app. Chris Graham, of episode 78 fame, helped shape the vision for the project. Accessibility for web applications typically gets added at the end of development cycles with different tools and low priority. This ruins the experience for many users and generally causes a huge impact on the quality of code. Many companies are now seeing the viability & market for connected IoT. Many of these companies want to unify product experiences and blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds. With that said, how can we start building our skills and becoming the experts in this development arena?   Whether you are interested in building assembly line robotics, medical technology solutions, or even a simple product with blinking LED's, developers will need to know many things. The security, product development cycles, how to connect devices to together, & how to share and assimilate firmware & software packages are very important. Standardization and assimilation of devices in a secure manner is critical for businesses.   JavaScript's ubiquity & evented I/O model lends itself well to easily build IoT devices. Other languages are just as viable and debatably better at many aspects of IoT but JavaScript makes it easier, approachable, and portable.   NPM (@npmjs), the Node Package Manager, is used across the world as the standard JavaScript package manager for Node.js JavaScript primarily for the web.
