As many as 100,000 enslaved people fled successfully from the horrors of bondage in the antebellum South, finding safe harbor along a network of passageways across North America via the Underground Railroad. Yet many escapes took place not by land but by sea. William Grimes escaped slavery in 1815 by stowing away in a cotton bale on a ship from Savannah to New York, enduring days without food or water before settling in Connecticut. Frederick Douglass disguised himself as a free black sailor, using borrowed papers to board a train and then a steamboat from Baltimore to New York, reaching freedom in less than 24 hours. Thomas Jones, a formerly enslaved man from North Carolina, escaped in 1849 by hiding on a ship bound for New York, relying on his maritime knowledge as a steward to evade detection and later reuniting with his family in the North. This was a secret world of stowaways and the vessels that carried them to freedom across the North and into Canada. It sprawled through the intricate riverways of the Carolinas to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay to Boston’s harbors. Today’s guest is Marcus Rediker, author of “Freedom Ship: The Uncharted History of Escaping Slavery by Sea.” We see the Atlantic waterfront as a place of conspiracy, mutiny, and liberation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mindfulness meditation, which involves becoming aware of the breath in the present moment, has been a core part of Eastern contemplative practices for thousands of years. Over recent decades however, it's ‘exploded' throughout the West as scientists have sought to prove the physical and mental benefits of regular practice - like feeling calmer, less stressed and feeling better able to manage emotions. This week we look at some of the more surprising places where these simple techniques are having a big impact. In Kenya, we learn about the ‘mindfulness revolution' that took place in a men's high security prison outside Nairobi after a group of inmates and guards were taught mindfulness techniques in 2015. They soon started teaching each other and ten years later it's spread to prisons throughout the country and beyond. And we visit Baltimore in the US, where a non-profit organisation has been teaching mindfulness and yoga in inner city schools for over twenty years, giving children growing up with violence and deprivation the tools to manage their emotions and heal trauma.People Fixing The World from the BBC is about brilliant solutions to the world's problems. And, we're answering a topic sent in by one of our big fans - who, sadly at the moment, is a huge Orioles fan! We'll get Sean's take on why the O's have been so shockingly bad so far this season. Wiz is the “new kid on the block,” and it has had tremendous growth. During the interview, Bryan Rosensteel shows how agentless approaches can improve visibility and assist with compliance. We all know how complexity has infiltrated federal technology. We have the usual suspect of Cloud Service Providers, hybrid clouds, private clouds, and, if that was not complicated enough, alt-clouds. As a result, it is almost impossible to get a “bird's eye” visibility to provide cyber security. Two main ways have been proposed to secure this much-desired system's view. Agent. One approach is to put a bit of code on each device, called an “agent” method. It is good for granular control, but can slow down a scan and must be maintained Agentless. Bryan Rosensteel from Wiz describes something called a “agentless” method to gain visibility into complex systems. This method leverages infrastructure and protocols to accomplish the scanning objective much faster. Bryan Rosensteel states that in a world of constant attacks, this faster method allows for rapid updates to threats. Beyond better observation, an agentless method, like the one provided by Wiz, allows for compliance automation, continuous monitoring, and sets the groundwork for effective Zero Trust implementation.
Welcome to Episode 84 of Tablesetters, where Devin and Steve break down a loaded week across the baseball landscape. We open with the Subway Series, which gave us tension, star power, and plenty of narrative fuel. Juan Soto made his much-anticipated return to Yankee Stadium — and the reaction was loud. Devin and Steve unpack how the series played out, from Soto's quiet weekend at the plate to Max Fried's dominance and Cody Bellinger's statement performance. The Yankees took two out of three, but the bigger story was what this matchup revealed about where both New York teams stand in 2025. Then we go around the league: Brandon Hyde fired — The Orioles pull the plug on their manager and DFA Kyle Gibson as their season spirals. What's next for Baltimore? Jose Alvarado suspended 80 games for a banned substance reportedly tied to a weight loss drug. He's out for the postseason. How do the Phillies respond? Twins win streak snapped at 13, thanks to a highlight-reel robbery by Brewers rookie Jackson Chourio. Angels sweep the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine for the first time since 2010. Is this the spark they needed? More bad news in Pittsburgh — Tommy John likely looms for Jared Jones, and Jeff Passan says the Pirates might want to trade Paul Skenes now while his value is highest. A bold take — but does it make sense? We also dig into the Sub-2.00 ERA club, debate the results of our Twitter poll on breakout players, run through this week's Red Hot/Ice Cold picks, and wrap with what we're watching next in Coming Around 3rd. Whether you're locked in on the pennant races or already dreaming about October, we've got your baseball conversation covered. Today we have Kayleen. She is 27 years old, lives in Baltimore, MD and she took her last drink on April 6th, 2025. On this 10-night, 11-day trip of a lifetime, we will be hiking the Inca Trail and participating in two service projects. Registration closes in about three weeks. [02:35] Thoughts from Paul: There is so much speak in the recovery world about letting go. In recovery meetings, many of the topics are centered around letting go. Paul shares that he has spent years thinking he needed to figure out HOW to let go. Like there was a secret technique that was missing. In fact, all you can do is realize you're holding on and this awareness is the first real step towards letting the sunshine in. Once you realize you are holding on, or bring awareness to something weighing you town, it immediately begins to shift on its own, and you don't have to let it go. Another thought is that it's not even about letting GO, it's more about letting IN. If something is nagging you, don't let it go, let it in. It will eventually leave on it's own, when the time is right, when it's resolved. Paul encourages us to have the strength to see where you're holding on and then invite it in a little more. [09:23] Paul introduces Kayleen: Kayleen is 27, lives in Baltimore, and works as a server in a fine dining restaurant. She enjoys walking, being in nature, painting and going to Café RE meetings. Kayleen says she never drank normally. She recalls being in ninth grade and taking swigs of liquor from her mom's cabinet before getting on the school bus in the morning. Looking back, she thinks that she was always looking to escape her feelings. In college, Kayleen didn't go to parties and drink with others. She preferred to drink at home and didn't want anyone to know how much or how often she was drinking. She would frequently drink before going to class and eventually was suspended from the university. Kayleen was sent to detox three times in college for her drinking and self-harm. She wasn't ready to quit drinking and would start back as soon as she got out. When she was 21, she was arrested twice for DUIs, and she wasn't willing to stop drinking. A year later Kayleen was married and their relationship revolved around alcohol where they drank together daily. Over the next three years Kayleen gained over 100 pounds, and her mobility was suffering. A doctor told her that due to her poor health, she might not see age 30. For Kayleen, the idea of quitting drinking didn't feel like a possibility. In April of 2023, Kayleen discovered the RE podcast. Within a month of listening frequently, Kayleen decided to quit drinking on May 25th – just for that one day. She woke up feeling so proud of herself she kept going. A few months later she joined Café RE and found community. Kayleen began walking and ended up losing 60 pounds in the first year of sobriety. Her wife had quit drinking too, but that wasn't enough to save the marriage. Kayleen ended up divorcing her wife and moved from Indiana to Baltimore to stay with her accountability partner that she met through Café RE. In April of this year, Kayleen's sister got married and it was at the wedding that she relapsed. She said within a day she was drinking just like she was before quitting and quickly turned to her community for help. Kayleen says she decided to quickly shred the shame and make sure she didn't get stuck in a “woe is me” place. The community lifted her up and helped her realize that she didn't lose her sobriety time and Kayleen shares that she learned a lot from the experience. Kayleen's parting piece of guidance: Just keep trying. Never, never, never give up on yourself. Recovery Elevator You took the elevator down, you gotta take the stairs back up. We can do this. The climate crisis is not just a climate crisis—it is a planetary crisis threatening the very continuation of life and civilization as we know it. If humanity continues to lolligag its way to an apocalyptic future without drastically addressing this planetary crisis, “We are ensuring at best abominable lives for ourselves and our children,” Malcolm Harris writes in his new book What's Left. But, Harris continues, “I refuse to believe that we have no alternative to the universal human project's erosion into parochial barbarism and petty domination. That is an unacceptable outcome, and its giant advancing outline visible through the mist of the near future compels immediate radical action.” In this podcast, recorded at Red Emma's Cooperative Bookstore and Cafe in Baltimore on April 29, 2025, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Harris about his new book and about three practical paths humanity can take to save itself from apocalypse.Audio Post-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

The AI revolution is underway, and the U.S. and China are racing to the top. At the heart of this competition are semiconductors—especially advanced GPUs that power everything from natural language processing to autonomous weapons. The U.S. is betting that export controls can help check China's technological ambitions. But will this containment strategy work—or could it inadvertently accelerate China's drive for self-sufficiency? Those who think chip controls will work argue that restricting China's access gives the U.S. critical breathing room to advance AI safely, set global norms, and maintain dominance. Those who believe chip controls are inadequate, or could backfire, warn that domestic chipmakers, like Nvidia and Intel, also rely on sales from China. Cutting off access could harm U.S. competitiveness in the long run, especially if other countries don't fully align with U.S. policy. As the race for AI supremacy intensifies, we debate the question: Can the U.S. Outpace China in AI Through Chip Controls? Arguing Yes: Lindsay Gorman, Managing Director and Senior Fellow of the German Marshall Fund's Technology Program; Venture Scientist at Deep Science Ventures Will Hurd, Former U.S. Representative and CIA Officer Arguing No: Paul Triolo, Senior Vice President and Partner at DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group Susan Thornton, Former Diplomat; Visiting Lecturer in Law and Senior Fellow at the Yale Law School Paul Tsai China Center Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates This debate was produced in partnership with Johns Hopkins University. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner break down MLB Friday from a betting perspective. best bets as always. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner hosted the MLB podcast focusing on Friday's games. They began by reflecting on their recent 2-0 best bets streak, expressing confidence heading into the weekend. The first highlighted game was the Chicago rivalry at Wrigley Field, where Shane Smith starts for the struggling White Sox against Cade Horton of the Cubs. Griffin noted Horton's limited pitch mix might still overpower the weak Sox lineup. Munaf emphasized the Cubs' rest advantage and the Sox's fatigue after a loss in Cincinnati. Next, the Guardians face the Reds in the "Battle of Ohio." Griffin was cautious about Tanner Bybee as a road favorite, pointing out the hitter-friendly park and Brady Singer's vulnerability to home runs. Munaf countered, citing Bybee's strong recent performances, including seven innings against the Phillies, making him lean toward the Guardians' money line. In Philadelphia, Andrew Haney's inconsistency was likened to an unpredictable night out, while Ranger Suarez's solid home record made the Phillies a favored pick, especially on the run line, with Munaf highlighting Haney's poor career numbers against the Phillies. For the Mets vs Yankees, Griffin leaned toward the Mets due to their bullpen strength and skepticism of the Yankees' offense, while Munaf preferred betting the over, expecting home runs from both sides at Yankee Stadium. Griffin selected the Orioles over the Nationals as his best bet, trusting Baltimore's bullpen despite their shaky start to the season. Munaf agreed, noting Cade Povich's prior success against the Nationals. In Toronto, Griffin doubted the Tigers' offense despite their strong start, while Munaf leaned under 8.5, noting Flaherty's rough patch and Francis's vulnerability. In the Braves vs Red Sox matchup, Griffin was hesitant to back Chris Sale and wary of the Braves' underperformance. Munaf praised Crochet's early season form and leaned towards under eight, expecting a pitching duel. Regarding the Astros vs Rangers, both analysts favored the Rangers due to Ivaldi's dominance and McCullers Jr.'s limited pitch count. Munaf stressed the under, given the Astros' offensive struggles and Rangers' home under trends. In Milwaukee, Griffin was cautious about backing the Brewers despite Chad Patrick's solid form, while Munaf pointed out the absence of Buxton and Correa for the Twins, making the under eight a strong play. For the late games, they mocked the Rockies' dire situation in Arizona, where Corbin Burns' Diamondbacks were massive favorites. Munaf joked about backing the D-Backs team total overs. In San Diego, Munaf leaned over eight and a half in the Mariners vs Padres game, noting Koenig's regression potential after his shutout of the Rockies. Griffin, however, was hesitant. The Dodgers vs Angels featured Dustin May against Jack Kahanowitz. Both hosts dismissed the Angels' chances, advising bettors to focus on Dodgers team totals. In the Giants vs A's game, Griffin acknowledged JP Sears' surprising stability but warned about his fly-ball tendencies in San Francisco's pitcher-friendly park. Munaf favored Logan Webb's strong home splits and suggested a Giants win by multiple runs. Finally, the best bets were set: Griffin chose Orioles ML at -108, citing bullpen strength and home field, while Munaf selected Phillies -1.5 at -108, pointing to Suarez's home form and Haney's frailties. Throughout the podcast, both hosts balanced data and playful commentary, giving special attention to pitching matchups, team fatigue, and offensive inconsistencies, emphasizing the significance of situational factors like park dimensions and team travel schedules. On October 3rd, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe was found wandering the streets of Baltimore, delirious, disheveled, and dressed in someone else's clothes. He was taken to a hospital, barely coherent, slipping in and out of consciousness. For the next four days, he was gripped by hallucinations, unable to explain what had happened or how he got there. He repeatedly called out the name “Reynolds,” a man no one could identify, before dying under murky circumstances. To this day, no one knows exactly how or why Poe died—and no autopsy was ever performed. In this episode, the boys dive into one of the most puzzling deaths in American literary history. Was Poe a victim of "cooping," a form of election-day voter fraud where victims were drugged, disguised, and forced to vote multiple times? Or was his death the result of alcohol withdrawal, rabies, syphilis, or even a planned murder? Some believe he may have had a secret medical condition, while others suspect foul play tied to a romantic rivalry.Theories are as numerous as they are bizarre, and the lack of medical records or police reports only deepens the mystery. Even Poe's burial was hasty and unceremonious—his grave went unmarked for years. From his eerie final days to the symbolic poetry of his death, this episode unravels the strange case of a man whose life was steeped in darkness—and whose death may be his greatest unsolved mystery.Originally recorded as Mini Ep 2 for Patreons Only. www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast

Mackenzie Rivers (0:24-0:26) supported RJ's disciplinary stance. RJ detailed NBA playoff promotions (0:26-1:44), highlighting Mackenzie's 20+ unit season profit and Fezzik's 21.7, while Diamond Dave Esler led with 37 units. Mackenzie (1:45-1:52) admitted frequent alignment with Fezzik's picks. RJ offered bundled picks at a discounted price. Fezzik (4:47-5:57) introduced the critical Week 18 schedule impact, noting six teams—Jets, Washington, Vegas, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Indy—may face weakened division leaders, offering betting value. RJ (5:57-6:19) supported this with Kansas City's precedent of resting players. Fezzik (7:02-7:14) warned about Saints and Jets possibly tanking due to QB issues. Scott Seidenberg (7:26-8:24) declared Kansas City's schedule as brutal, starting in Brazil, facing the Eagles, and enduring short-week matchups against Buffalo and Baltimore. RJ (8:24-13:19) added context about KC's fatigue from years of dense scheduling and pointed to their 11th hardest schedule overall. Fezzik (13:20-14:32) explained that by Robbie Greer's method, the Giants had the hardest (+1.6 per game) and the 49ers the easiest (-1.4). Fezzik (16:48-20:05) outlined a strategy of betting unders on NFC teams, due to their road-heavy schedules. RJ (22:37-23:55) spotlighted the 49ers' easiest stretch—Week 13 to 17—and New England's favorable Weeks 5-9. Scott (24:37-25:19) dissected Dallas' post-bye stretch as brutal. RJ (25:26-26:08) showcased Cincinnati's taxing three-game stretch against Baltimore, Buffalo, Baltimore. RJ (54:53-55:04) noted the 49ers' early season is manageable but highlighted their late-season schedule as historically easy. RJ (1:24:28-1:24:44) confidently placed a best bet on 49ers over 10 wins, supported by Mackenzie. Scott (1:25:32-1:26:07) advised splitting bets on Broncos and Chargers to fade the Chiefs in AFC West. Mackenzie (1:40:21-1:41:31) warned of increased NBA playoff injuries, stating all-star absences are five times higher than 20 years ago. He and Scott (1:43:57-1:44:05) saw the Knicks as undervalued against the Pacers, projecting the Knicks as deserving stronger home court consideration than the market indicates. Throughout, RJ questioned the sustainability of the Chiefs and emphasized the 49ers' position as strategically undervalued. The panel agreed that San Francisco remains a betting target despite roster losses, with RJ and Mackenzie noting their favorable odds across the board. Learn more about your ad choices.
