The Did you know Segment… it's back!  Sigh… “Karen's” geez and geez… what's with the racist behavior… immediately followed by a lame ass apology…and “white” tears!  So, this “Karen” owns a hat store and thought it was a great idea to use the Star of David as an anti-vax symbol…this genius hails from Nashville, TN.  In other DYK news, Amy Cooper is back in the news, you know the lady that called that police on the African American man birdwatching in Central Park and lied and cried more “white” tears.  Well, apparently, she's suing her former employer for racism.  No words.  Shifting gears… if you have not seen High On The Hog (Netflix), see it.  If you've seen it, see it again!  Yes, it's that good!On this episode of Active Allyship…it's more than a #hashtag! The ladies converse with Karen's Daughter founder - Amy Bauer!  What an incredible conversation, like seriously, no exaggeration! On the question of marination, Amy Bauer is working on undoing some of that marination… it really isn't her truth. What an awaking!Like who knew?  An actual initiative for the good of humanity titled “Karen's Daughter”…if you haven't picked up what's being put down by now… The name “Karen” has become synonymous with European American women aka white women (and men) behaving badly based on their racist beliefs. But wait, Amy expounds upon “Karen” as a person and a concept, you've got to listen!Just when you thought you knew what “Karen” was all about, here comes Amy Bauer to educate you on the total and complete miseducation of her up close and personal engagement.  How have you dealt with relatives that have propraganda'ish mindsets and behaviors? O wait, wait!  As a European American woman/man - How about healing…have you thought about your own healing journey and how it can be transformative for your role in humanity and being or becoming an ally? **Bonus… You've got to listen to the story of Amy and the stranger on the park bench… it might make you feel like someone's cutting onions… but LISTEN anyway… Please. If you aren't already, please follow us on IG|Twitter @activeallyship.podcast! EPISODE NOTES FOR THE GAIL TEEVAN INTERVIEW GETTING BACK INTO THE GAME OF LIFE AND CELEBRATING YOUR WINS AFTER ABUSE On today’s show I have Gail Teevan, a survivor and a coach with a heart for health and healing. She was a professional basketball player with The All American Redheads, and in her time with the team, she toured all over the US and played against men “winning 80% of the games”; Amazing! She was amongst a group of women who were trailblazing for women in the game. Like many Gail has pivoted from her massage therapy business last year when Covid-19 hit and has redirected to become a health and wellness coach, utilizing a blend of her therapeutic practices and her team building experience to create a program to help other's heal and build their mind muscles. She promises to ignite hope, clarity and balance in the lives of those she helps. She is sweet and playful and knows all too well how to achieve success with focus on strategies, with a combination of training with a good dose of fun thrown into the mix. Gail understands that there are rules to the game of life, but ultimately it is a game, so being energized and having fun along the way is what keeps us playing our best game. Remember that every day is a new day and a new opportunity to move in the direction of your dreams. Every day is a clean slate to start fresh. So hang in there and keep striving to regain your personal power. For anyone interested in getting some coaching support to get your life back on track in 2021, please contact me. I work online via zoom face to face calls, which allows you the flexibility to work with me wherever you happen to be located and wherever you are comfortable to have private confidential conversations. If you would love to get unstuck and know deep down you will achieve far more by getting the support of a transformational coach, I would love to help you get your life back on the right track. If you want to fast track your journey to triumph over your trials, click this link  Here are the top 10 tips of today’s episode Get support through therapy and counselling to give voice to the challenges you are facing. Ask yourself what are you tolerating in your life and do you want to keep putting up with the same thing? If you are facing a fear of staying with something harmful and are also facing the fear of not knowing what will happen if you leave that harmful situation, choose the fear that will guide you to the safety and protection you need and deserve. When you break away from a toxic situation you learn to trust yourself again. Know that each time you stumble you have a point of reference to show you that you were able to get back up again. To be able to step away from the judging, the guilt and the shame, know that it is not your fault. Know that nothing that has happened to you changes your innate worth; you are precious! Dance your way to happiness. If you are feeling down, put on an upbeat song and dance yourself happy. Water is very therapeutic. If you live near water, spend time near the water. If you don’t and you can have a bath or even a footspa with some Epsom salts, this can really help relax when you are feeling stressed. Plan ahead for something you look forward to, this really helps elevate your mood and make you feel more optimistic.    BONUS You can retrain your muscle memory through your mind. If you would like to contact Gail Teevan please use the links below. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gail.marks.549 Email: teevancoaching@gmail.com I hope this interview inspires you to rise and shine. Subscribe. Enjoy. Share. There are also many online counselling supports now available. If the Support Person is not a good fit for you, try another and another, until you have one that is the right fit for you. After another break up just before Christmas she has realized what needs to change in her dating life, and what she wants to focus on when the time is right for a next relationship. Her January intention and theme is to honour herself by being mindful of what and who she allows access to her energy. She also speaks on her transition from New Age to Jesus and how her faith journey has transformed her life. Making money on social media can seem SO complicated. But the truth is, anyone can do it. You don’t have to have millions of followers or snag sponsorship deals (well, that helps, too). In this Monday Marketing Minisode, Darla and Natalie count the 6 ways YOU can make money on social media. Don’t miss it! What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [0:36] Natalie’s Big Green Egg [3:02] #1: Instagram Shops [3:58] #2: Facebook Paid Live Events [4:43] #3: YouTube Partner Program [7:55] #4: Twitter Pre-roll [9:17] #5: LinkedIn Events [10:14] #6: TikTok’s Creator fund [11:40] The disadvantages to monetization [14:02] Blooper Reel! Resources & People Mentioned Wingnut’s Facebook Monetization episode Wingnut’s YouTube Mid-roll Ads episode Big Green Egg #1: Instagram Shops Did you know people can shop your products on Instagram? The one caveat is that you need to sell physical goods like pillows, t-shirts, pottery, art, etc. Users can shop through your products right from the app. You’ll have to use a business account connected to a Facebook page and a catalog (i.e. a Shopify site). But once Instagram approves your shop, you get to rake in the cash.  #2: Facebook Paid Live Events Facebook lets you monetize your event with a one-time access charge that’s collected when your guests register. You just have to apply and undergo a review process to find out if you’re eligible. Darla and Natalie might be collaborating on a webinar soon, so stay tuned! (To hear more about Facebook monetization, check out episode 175) #3: YouTube’s Partner Program YouTube is currently the #1 way to make money with social media. You can actually make a living from it. The downside is that you have to have at least 1,000 subscribers and over 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months. It’s a lot of work, but there are 5 ways you can make money on the platform: Advertising Revenue Channel memberships Merchandise Shelf Superchat and Super Stickers YouTube Premium Revenue (Subscription Fee) Listen to learn more about the avenues you can take! Also, check out Wingnut episode 171 for the full story on Mid-rolls.  #4: Twitter Pre-roll Twitter isn’t usually an effective medium for interior designers, but if you have thousands of followers on Twitter, you can capitalize on this. Twitter now allows you to add pre-roll to monetize the video content you share on Twitter. To do this, your content has to be deemed safe and you have to be accepted into the program. Bonus: You can choose which videos will get ads and even who gets to advertise on them.  #5: LinkedIn Events LinkedIn isn’t just for business connections. You can create events and use the platform to promote an online OR in-person event. You provide a link to an external ticketing site. The best part? You can also bring in a third-party to help manage the page + event. #6: TikTok’s Creator fund Last but not least, Darla’s favorite platform has launched a creator fund. Basically, TikTok is offering money to people to create content on TikTok. It will pay prominent creators for original video content. If you meet the requirements, you should see a notification in your inbox (under “All Activity” and “From TikTok”) that notifies you that you’re eligible to apply for the creator fund. What are the eligibility requirements? You have to be 18 or older Have at least 10,000 followers Have 10,000+ views in 30 days Read and agree to the TikTok Creator Fund agreement Live in the US, the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain Once approved, you can start making money from your content. If you have videos with thousands of watches? Cha-ching.  Why should you monetize your accounts? How does it help your business? Are there any disadvantages? Listen to the whole minisode to find out! On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to write proposals that get you a yes almost every time.  Do you often waste hours and hours on proposals that end up getting rejected? Only to receive back terse emails like, “It’s out of our budget” or “We’ve decided to go in another direction?” This is the reality for too many consultants.  Let’s stop wasting time on proposals only to hear a no. Doing proposals right can grow your business exponentially, and in this episode of the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how.  Proposals are heinous and dreadful and terrible for almost everyone. You don’t always need to send a proposal, and there ARE ways to make them simpler.  Here are the key areas I covered in this episode:  A proposal should not be a discovery session, yet that’s how too many of them read. Find out what a proposal is - and is not, what to put in and what to leave out.  How to shorten writing time by ensuring you have all the information you need when you sit down to write your proposal.  Your proposal does NOT need to be a 50-page document - or even 15. I’ll share why including too much detail can cause you trouble down the road.  You are the expert. I share how to write your proposal so you gain trust, protect yourself from “scope creep” and don’t tempt clients to  micromanage you.   There’s ONE BIG THING you’re not going to do in your proposal that will save you from rejected proposals and avoid the dreaded sticker shock. Yes, it’s going to require you to be brave - but it works. Should you put options in your proposals, and if so, how many? (Plus, I share something profound my husband asked me years ago that I’ve returned to over and over again.) BONUS: You can download my personal template for proposals here: theyesproposaltemplate.com. I’ve used this proposal to close business in the range of low thousands all the way up to a million dollars for a client that we wrote one for, so I know it can be a winner for you as well. If you follow the tips I share in this episode, you’re going to start getting more yeses to your proposals for a more profitable - and yes, joyful - business. Listen to this episode to learn how to make the proposal process light, easy, and full of yeses wherever you get podcasts or click here to listen and subscribe: https://enlightenedmarketing.com/podcast/.

Having been a part of the academe, I have seen how students cope and manage different struggles, but I found myself in awe when I encountered working students. This make-ahead christmas brunch menu will allow you to prepare for the holiday in advance so you can enjoy time with your family instead of slaving away in the kitchen.Have you noticed, that as a mom during the holidays somehow everyone is laughing, talking playing games, having fun…and somehow you’re STILL cooking, STILL cleaning, STILL making sure that everyone else has a great time, but you don’t get to be a part of it?Well, let me tell you that I am not about to sit on the sidelines while my family enjoys holiday festivities.…but I am also not willing to give up my holiday food traditions either.Enter…this make-ahead christmas brunch menu.I love making a fancy christmas brunch for my family to enjoy after they open all their presents Christmas morning…but it can be hard to make that happen with everything else going on.To solve the problem, I created this simple but elegant Christmas brunch menu that can be made almost entirely ahead of time.So What’s On The Christmas Brunch Menu?Get your complete make-ahead Christmas brunch menu here!I’m so glad you asked. For a brunch I like to default to a little formula. I want to serve something sweet, something savory, something that grows in the ground, and a drink.Make-Ahead Christmas Brunch Main Dish: QuicheFor our something savory we are going with quiche. Quiche is a great dish to make-ahead because it freezes and reheats wonderfully.Another reason I like to serve quiche is because if I’m thinking ahead, I can make the crust for the quiche when I am making my thanksgiving pies and freeze it until I need it.The quiche I use is a sage cranberry sausage quiche to give some seasonal holiday vibes.Make-Ahead Christmas Brunch Side: Sweet RollsFor something sweet, I serve sweet rolls. Is there anything more quintessentially Christmas than sweet rolls? To make these ahead, I use a technique called parbaking.Parbaking means exactly what it sounds like…partially baking. This allows you to finish the baking process on the day you eat them so they smell amazing and taste fresh (instead of dry which might happen if you baked them all the way through and then froze them.I love this technique for all sorts of bread products, but it works great for sweet rolls because they are a bit time consuming to make. Making them ahead makes it do-able for a holiday breakfast without a huge mess.Bonus: You can freeze the glaze ahead as well in little baggies for the easiest sweet brunch treat ever! You can use this method for any type of sweet roll. Simply bake for about 2/3 of the time suggested, remove from the oven and cool, then cover and freeze. When you are ready to bake, bake again checking them at about 15 minutes (they will likely take about 25 minutes to bake).Rolls can be cooked from frozen instead of thawed, but it will take a bit longer.Since it’s Christmas I went for a classic orange roll.Make Ahead Side: Fruit SaladI always try to include a fruit or vegetable at every party for a little balance…but doing this ahead of time is tricky as fruits and vegetables don’t hold very well.So for this fruit salad, I use canned fruit so it can be thrown together the day before or the day of by only opening a few cans.I’m sticking with the seasonal citrus theme here with a grapefruit, mandarin orange, and pomegranate salad with lime and fresh mint.Note: if you’re not a grapefruit fan (i’m still deciding if grapefruit and I are friends) you can use canned pears in it’s place!Christmas Brunch Drink: Non-Alcoholic MimosasTo me, a fancy drink really p

It may be a fine line between comics and art, but Karl Stevens' fine line crosses effortlessly between them. Karl & I talk about how his realistic drawing style and watercolors treat comics as fine art, and how that visual style complements his naturalist stories, especially in his recent collection, The Winner (Retrofit Comics). We get into his gateway from superheroes to art-comics, his recent commission to make comics that accompanied a Botticcelli exhibition at the Gardener Museum in Boston, his work as a guard in that same museum, the challenge of drawing his wife, the challenge of getting paid as a freelancer, and whether he regrets his his teenaged decision to devote his life to comics. We also talk about his upcoming book of cat comics, drawing gags for the New Yorker, visiting the Words & Pictures Museum in '90s Northampton (a.k.a. How does an artist make The Leap into greatness? In Ersi Sotiropoulos' wondrous new novel, What's Left of the Night (New Vessel Press, tr. Karen Emmerich), we explore three days in the mid-life of the poet CP Cavafy and how they may have helped him become the most distinguished Greek poet of the 20th century. Ersi & I talk about how an off-the-cuff discovery of Cavafy's 1897 trip to Paris led her to this novel over three decades, how she almost drowned in research before a poet browbeat her into writing the proemium of her novel, and how the book rebelled against itself until she had a dream of Cavafy that quelled the unrest. We also get into the universality of desire, her non-challenge of writing from the perspective of a gay man, the process of translation and Ersi's tendency to over-edit translators when it's a language she knows. Plus, she tells us why she considers me a pantophile (one who likes everything), and why she prefers hotels over being home in Greece, the Iliad over the Odyssey, and the daemon over the muses when it comes to the font of creativity. I’m about to release my book, Find Your F yeah: Stop Censoring Who You Are and Discover What You Really Want (via Chronicle Books, in September 2019!)—so naturally, I’ve been having a crisis of confidence, because, you know, sharing art is always terrifying. So, today’s voicemail is as much for me as it is for you—because I’ve learned some stuff about confidence you just CAN’T UNSEE, stuff that will change your life. In this episode we talk about the difference between confidence and self-esteem, according to science (it turns out you only need to work on one). We also cover how to build up your confidence even if you have low self-esteem (spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with innate personality traits , looks, or talent; it’s all about TRYING.) This is all thanks to a little mechanism in your brain called the “dorsal raphe nucleus”…long story. Actually, it’s only a 14 minute story. BONUS: You also get to hear me admit my two most hated smells in the world, and also cough loudly in your ear. My bad. Follow my soon-to-be-published book RIGHT HERE! Science I reference in this episode: Taking risks builds our autonomy, one of our 3 Psychological Needs, according to SDT (self-determination theory). This counterbalances the pain of failure + making mistakes. Martin P. Seligman, the founder of positive psychology (and one of my professors from the Specialization in Applied Positive Psychology I just earned from the University of Pennsylvania) talks about default helplessness and the dorsal raphe nucleus in his book, The Hope Circuit. You can also read an academic paper on it here: Maier, S. F., & Seligman, M. E. (2016). Learned helplessness at fifty: Insights from neuroscience. It takes a lot of confidence and faith in yourself to start a business. But it also takes a lot of talent, assets and planning. The only way a business finds success is a well-developed strategy based on research, market analysis and experience. So why do so many people try to run a business without all the necessary pieces? How can you avoid these costly mistakes? That’s what we’ll discuss on this episode. Solid advice for entrepreneurs, business decision makers or anyone who manages a business. We discuss common mistakes and pitfalls you should stay clear of (if your ego will let you). The Bonus: You're Learning & Adjusting! - Learn more here: : https://therealtyclassroom.com/podcast/punched-face   Subscribe to the podcast: https://apple.co/2CkWYB8 THE DANGER OF GUESSING & THE LAW OF CORROBORATION There's a big danger in guessing and how that leads to the "Law of Corroboration." What do I mean? When you have a perception of how something works, that's a guess. If you're guessing, you can't go back to Episode #62 about written goals and be accurate. If you are guessing, you will only look for corroborating evidence that supports your guess. For example, once you've written down your goal for gross commission income (GCI), you will go do research to find evidence that it is possible. My goal is to get you to be very pragmatic at this moment in time, as you seek evidence to achieve your GCI goal. If you rely on guessing, your plan will also be subject to guesses. THE WRITTEN GOAL PROTECTS YOU FROM YOUR WHIMS Once you have your written goal, which I hope is geared a little bit toward a "luxury-sized" number, you will tend to be whimsical. We all are. That's when you start making BAD, whimsical decisions. "It's harder to get there than I thought, so I'll just go back here." No. That is simply you making a whimsical decision based on the challenges of growing a business. Writing the goal down helps you stick to the plan. IF YOU'RE STUBBORN (AND INSECURE) LIKE ALL OF US! You have to check yourself on a regular basis if you're stubborn (and insecure) like all the rest of us. Don't fall into the trap of, "I made this decision and I'm stickin' to it!" Believe me, I understand: It's painful to look at a mistake and realize that you've charted a course in the wrong way. If you're irredeemably stubborn, you might wake up in 15 or 20 years and wonder why nobody warned you that you're doing it wrong. Insecurity is another killer. Remember, instead of asking "Who am I?" you should be asking, "Why not me?" NEVER STOP QUESTIONING YOUR GOAL AND YOUR PLAN TO GET THERE There's no such thing as a straight path to your goal. You're going to have wins and losses, and you're going to get beaten up from time to time. The more that you question your goal and plan, and make this a game worth playing, the more likely it is that you'll be able to make those course corrections when they're necessary. Asking questions helps you refine your plan. THE BONUS: YOU'RE LEARNING AND ADJUSTING When you have the courage to take a beat and question your goal, you're learning and adjusting. I want you to look in the mirror and see someone special, who wasn't quite sure they could go to this new place where they're a high achiever with a successful real estate business -- but they did it!

Learn Smarter

Calendaring is hated by so many of the students we work with--and it’s the first thing we do with them. It is so critical and so important. If you do not keep track of what is going on in your life, nothing else can get done. Having a calendar is the starting point that greatly reduces anxiety in students because once you are in control of your time, you are in control of your life. You cannot get into a car and start driving unless you know where you are going--it is the same with calendaring. You cannot start reaching goals and milestones within educational therapy without knowing what they are in the first place. We encounter a lot of resistance when it comes to calendaring, but we have learned to challenge that resistance. Many students rely on online portals and memorization to keep track of their assignments and commitments. To counteract this resistance, we challenge our students to find an adult that does not have a calendar. All adults have calendars (or some sort of way of keeping track of their tasks). Like many things, it is difficult to start calendaring and there is a lot of upfront work, but as soon as the process becomes automated and habitual, you will see results.  The benefits far outweigh the uncomfortable beginning of starting. One of the reasons students don’t want to calendar is because of their online portal. We have a love/hate--but mostly hate--relationship with the online portal because it teaches students learned helplessness. The online portal teaches students to rely on whattheir teachers are posting to tell them what to do everyday. Often the online portal is used differently by different teachers, sending students off on a wild goose chase to source their responsibilities.  The online portal does not allow for forward planning--it is nearly impossible to manage a long-term project simply by using an online calendar. To help you and your child start calendaring we have compiled the… Seven Big Rules of Calendaring. Everything needs to be in one place. Students need to have one point of action everyday, which is, “I am going to check my calendar.” Decide AND COMMIT between digital and paper.  The advantages and disadvantages of the two depend on age and preference. If you tend to lose papers but not your phone, the digital calendar may work best. We don’t want to pretend like we prefer a paper calendar--the ability to quickly automate, reconcile and access it is simply not an option with a paper calendar. Sometimes it’s unavoidable and ourclients have to use a paper calendar, but we undoubtedly prefer the digital calendar. (BONUS: You can have an all-family calendar and communicate and schedule with your child.) Automate, automate, automate. Automating is both learning smarter and working smarter. Put weekly commitments into your calendar once as a repeating event and have it always be there. Front-load. Put in all dates for all tasks as soon as you learn of them. This means, when you have the same class, every Monday at 8AM for the entire year...put that on your calendar at the beginning of the year. Layering. Digital calendars allow you to create specific calendars for the different facets of your life. We recommend that each student have two: school and personal calendars. Color code your different calendars to allow you to see how your time is being spent. Because each calendar is a different color, it allows students to visually see what is actually happening every day. The “to-do list” is an all day event. Listing your one time tasks on the same calendar as an all day event keeps everything you need in one place. Our Seven Big Rules of Calendaring are some guidelines  for you to be mindful of when calendaring with your student.  Now, what goes on your calendar? We have created a universal list to help guide your planning. School Entire School Academic Calendar (Days Off, Progress Report Days, Late Start, School-wide events, Class Schedule) All Day vs.

Bonus: You can hear the birds chirping in the background of this episode recorded on Lake Champlain (NY) at sunrise. Enjoy! This picture pretty much sums up my trip to the Adirondacks this summer. Open, expansive, peaceful. IDEAS SHARED Where do you get your best ideas? The shower? Running? I bet you won’t say: Sitting at my desk. Those breakthrough moments are unlikely to show up while you are pounding away for your umpteenth hour at the computer either. Point is: We need breaks.     Remember the false peak I discussed in this episode? Here she is in all her glory. Not a bad sneak preview of what was to come!   Here are just a few of the benefits of taking breaks: Allows us to recharge; Creativity flourishes away from our desks; We get new perspectives on old problems; Clarity of focus when we return to our work. Our view of Lake Champlain on the “real” Point Road. So magical. Baby on hip, crisp summer day, dogs snoozing, happy hour started…this is the stuff I dream about on vacation.   I find that anytime you are looking to make more space for something new – whether a behavior, habit, or hobby – it’s helpful to be able to understand that thing. Distinctions are a great way to do that and it is in that spirit that I discuss in this episode three types of breaks.           1) Short, Every Day Breaks           2) Vacations/Minibreaks           3) Long Breaks, e.g. sabbaticals Of course it’s one thing to start to see what different options are out there for taking breaks and quite another to actually start taking them. For this reason, the episode concludes with some practical tips for taking breaks.            1) Integrate short breaks into your everyday routines When we dream about taking a break, it usually doesn’t include something like taking a deep breath, standing up from your desk and stretching, or taking a walk around the block. But really these short breaks are the kind of daily practice that can bring peace and a sustainable pace to our lives. Sure it’s not as dreamy as jetting off to the shore of Nice, but I promise the impact will be felt every single day. Plus learning how to appreciate the sunshine on your lunch break is very good practice for being able to shift into the vacation mindset when you do head off for longer adventures.            2) Take vacations on a regular basis Did you know that in 2016 55% of Americans left vacation time on the table? Don’t be that person. (You can learn more about this issue over at Project Time Off. Psst – it’s not just bad for those of us missing out on vacation; it’s also bad for the businesses who employ them.) Listen to the Note To Self interview with NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley on tech etiquette. It reminded me again of the cultural differences at play when it comes vacation. Eleanor is based in Paris and I was shocked to hear that she never gets out of office messages from her colleagues in France. There is a deeper assumption that work can continue when they are gone. She laughed about how stateside we can write these out of office messages when we step away for even a mere afternoon. Fascinating. And so darn true.           3) Take a longer pause Sometimes longer pauses are delivered to us when we didn’t ask for them. Think jury duty, being sick, or caring for someone in need. Other times we can carve out special pauses like a sabbatical or year of traveling around the world. I personally loved my month-long break spent on the Camino de Santiago when I was nearing my third-trimester of pregnancy with my first. (A little insane in retrospect, but a lot amazing too.) Look at the beautiful Grandma I got when I married my hubby. I think she is the human embodiment of the peace that this environment offers.

Admit it, you've wondered at least once in your life "Who would win in a fight, Gandalf or The Silver Surfer?" So we decided to put some random hero match-ups to the test. Jacob created a bracket of sci-fi and fantasy heroes, and it's up to Joel and Kent to debate and decide who wins each bout. Since we had approximately 50 heroes to discuss, we only got through the first round this time around, but we'll be back to finish it off next week. BONUS: You can print off your own Baconsale heroes bracket at Baconsale.com and play along/argue with us!

“It's not natural to forgive without some sense of evening the score. It's intolerable to know that someone gets away with something, and there's no sense of avenging the act.” Thane Rosenbaum talks revenge in the second episode of our two-part 9/11 special! An author and law professor, Thane recently published Payback: The Case for Revenge (University of Chicago Press), an exploration of how the American judicial system has excluded vengeance from justice, to the detriment of the polity and the moral universe. “I'm not advocating that people go seek revenge as self-help; I am advocating that the legal system has to do a better job to do it on our behalf.” We discuss why the American legal system has a problem with emotion, how victims have been trivialized, what to do about suicide bombers, how western man split justice and revenge (and why it was a huge mistake), how Aeschylus' Oresteia creates a perfect model for the justice system, how to make better lawyers (and better people), and how The Godfather demonstrates the rule of proportionality. “Let's stop pretending that we don't believe in vengeance. Because if you believe in justice, you believe in vengeance. It's a false distinction between them.” Bonus: You get to hear about the time I had to decide whether to have someone killed!
