In this episode, Troy Trewin interviews Kris Jones, owner of Red Door Designs based in the beautiful Portland, Oregon, in the United States. Red Door Stories started 23 years ago as a design agency focused on branding and websites, but evolved to specialize in helping clients develop and tell their stories more effectively across their marketing and online presence. Over the past 12 months, Kris grew her design agency by an impressive 384%, transitioning from a solo operation to building a team of 5. The key to Kris' success was mastering the art of storytelling. She faced a common challenge - clients struggling to write their own website copy. This led Kris to immerse himself in the power of story, applying storytelling techniques to transform her clients' businesses. By helping her clients craft captivating stories, Kris enabled them to charge 6 times more, avoid burnout and attract higher-paying customers. Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: 1. What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Kris says the biggest challenge is figuring out how to talk about your business clearly. Being inside the "bottle", it's hard to read the label from an outside perspective - your customers' point of view. Being immersed in your own business, it's easy to fall into the trap of using industry jargon or assuming too much knowledge from your customers. 2 .What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Kris swears by Building A Story Brand by Donald Miller, as a game-changing resource. He explains how mastering the art of crafting compelling stories transformed his business, allowing him to help clients charge 6 times more, avoid burnout, and attract higher-paying customers. 3. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Kris is a big fan of the Marketing Made Simple podcast, as it provides practical, actionable tips for growing a small business. She also finds inspiration in story-driven shows, like ghost story podcasts to fuel her creativity. 4. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Kris emphasises the power of a well-designed website as the centre of your marketing universe, recommending platforms like Wix, Squarespace or Kajabi. She believes your website should be the focal point that you direct all your marketing activities towards, as it's the best way to convert visitors into paying clients in this digital age. 5. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? If Kris could go back in time, she would tell herself to focus solely on the tasks and clients that truly energise and fulfil her. She learned the hard way that saying "yes" to every opportunity, even if it's outside your zone of genius, can lead to a lot of frustration and burnout. Kris emphasises the importance of having the courage to politely decline work that doesn't align with your passions and strengths, as this will allow you to dedicate your time and resources to the areas that will drive the greatest impact for your business. The Book Leads – Episode 60 – Patricia Ortega & Building A Story Brand Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller The tough challenges Patricia, a Career Transition Coach and host of the podcast The Uncommon Career, had to overcome early in her life set the stage and lay the foundation for the work she's doing today helping people recognize their value and tell that story to the world. This was the perfect book for Patricia to discuss with me. In general, people are horrible at telling our stories – our REAL stories – and using them to reflect who we really are. So, we need to dial it in and tune it up. And that's exactly the work Patricia does to help others. What I took away from this conversation is the reinforcement of what coaches preach, namely that value is already inside who we're working with. It's a matter of realizing it, refining it, and presenting it that makes up the journey forward. Patricia understands that process based on her own experience growing up and into her own career. It's a reminder to both her and I, as well. All the pieces we discuss in the episode are the building blocks of our own commitments to our craft, namely building up our brand before an audience is there by knowing our story, recognizing our own value, and delivering it for others. It keeps us showing up – especially as podcast creators, episode after episode. We all need that constant reminder. It was great to share this exact conversation with a fellow coach and podcaster. Episode Highlights Breaking out and building up from the belief she was only ever meant to be at the bottom of the food chain, scraping up what no one else wanted. The tight parallels between entrepreneurship and being career savvy. The power of confirmation and validation for others. A conversation of what Artificial Intelligence (AI) can and cannot provide in the career coaching space. Confidence doesn't come from success but from the endless hours -- sometimes of blood, sweat, and tears -- practicing and refining our craft. The MAIN QUESTION that underlies my conversation with Patricia is, How much do we understand our story to then communicate our value to others? About Patricia Patricia is a master's level career counselor & coach with a decade of professional experience. Her mission is to use everything she's learned to help career seekers overcome mindset challenges and walk out their career goals. She helps people explore options and strategically navigate their career journey. Through the power of coaching, she also helps candidates develop a professional brand and communicate signature strengths so they can become confident, sought-after professionals. She is also a Christian, wife, dog mom, and of course, host of The Uncommon Career Podcast. I was introduced to Patricia by Erin Harrigan, my guest in Episode 55, in which Erin covered her book, Pursuing Success God's Way: A Practical Guide to Hustle with Heart. "What you wanna do in order to sell more products, get elected, or whatever it is that your agenda is. You want to own the problem. So whoever owns the problem of making a headache go away, is gonna sell more medicine. Whoever owns the problem of getting you from point A to point B in a quick period of time is going to dominate the transportation industry. For all of us Entrepreneurs, the most important thing you can do is figure out what problem you solve and communicate it and articulate that solution very very clearly to that problem, over and over and over again, until people have connected in their subconscious that problem with your solution. The key is when they experience that challenge or frustration they think about you." Donald Miller has helped more than 3,000 businesses clarify their marketing messages so their companies grow. This week's episode talks about the book by Donald Miller "Building a Story Brand" and how to start developing your business story so your customers hear you over the noise of your competitors
Here's the thing .. The key
On today's episode of The Brian Nichols Show, I'm joined by Morgan Bonwell (Founder, Right Strategies) to discuss the importance of building a storybrand to help candidates and campaigns effectively meet their constituents where they're at on the issues they care about. "So, the story brand framework, steps follow the basic concept of a hero meeting a guide. First, the customer has a problem that needs solved. And they're introduced to a guide. And that guide gives them a plan or a solution, and calls them to action, where they either achieved success, and how they can ultimately avoid failure. So in the book, it talks about using this method in business and marketing your product. But as I started to develop this concept, while implemented, implementing it in my own business, I was like, wow, candidates could really use this." Learn more about your ad choices. This book is a classic marketing book that is founded on the best practice in the art of story telling. However, it won't help you tell your story to your client. It will do something much better. It will help you build your brand around your client's story, which is the only thing that your client cares about. I have made some interesting changes on my website as a result of reviewing this book and invite you to visit it to see if you like it: www.theintuitiverevolution.co.uk. Niching and messaging is something I help my clients by tuning into the energy of their ideal client. The marketing industry has been evolving rapidly over the last decade or so. If you are able to successfully animate, articulate and deliver information as well as effectively communicate a brand message, you have a very marketable skill and can launch yourself into any career you choose. As Erin Pennings, my brilliant B2B copywriter guest, explains, copywriting has survived the test of time. A successful career in it could reap more rewards than you might even imagine.Successful marketing is always incomplete without the right words. No matter the industry, your business needs crisp, engaging copy that entices your audience and seals your reputation in the market. If you do not believe me, imagine this – imagine bumping into a potential customer unexpectedly. You speak of your work, your services, and the next thing you know is they are asking for your website address. Now, what if… you don't have a website? Or maybe you aren't confident about how it looks? ('Not professional enough'?)Maybe you thought your website could wait, but you also don't want to miss out on this opportunity. Here you are -- spiraling in a negative thought pattern.Perhaps, you could still manage to land the offer, but wouldn't you agree it kept you spinning for a bit?Today's conversation is dedicated to the listeners who want to learn about or succeed in the copy marketing world.I am delighted to introduce Erin Pennings, Founder of CopySnacks, a boutique B2B copywriting microagency, as my guest for today's episode. She talks about building a successful marketing career, polishing your copywriting skills, and why the market space is forever hungry for copy-crazy hands. She also digs into some neatly developed copy fundamentals, including the definitive need for writing binge-worthy headlines! Most important of all the points we discuss is leading as a shining mompreneur amid the responsibilities of everyday life. Learn to show up consistently for your passion and other tips to help you achieve the same! Here is a quick look into the episode. [03:36] From interning as a creator for art courses for a museum to running tours, Erin has always been a marketer. She's even worked with a graphic design agency and a PR firm. She narrates her story from there to becoming a copywriter.[10:55] Writing for your own requirement is probably the hardest thing in the world, according to Erin. It's easy to dodge a personal project and go for client projects.[12:32] How Erin coined the name of her business – CopySnacks[14:45] Erin shares the common mistakes people make with their website copy: The headline – it's essential to have a headline that hooks your readers in a matter of just a few seconds[16:57] Your website is your source of confidence. Not having it done the way you'd like could incite negative feelings in your minds when it comes to pitching for work or showcasing your services. Your website also adds to your credibility.[19:54] List of copywriting services Erin offers today[21:48] A well-written email is a way of communicating with your network; it makes sure you keep your customers.[22:30] It's essential to have a solid network of people. When networking, it is helpful to remember that it's easier to contact someone who's just a step ahead of you than someone who's levels above you.[25:51] Why authenticity will be the marketing trend for 2022 and beyond – people are tired of being sold to.[27:13] Erin's advice for you – If you're uncertain of giving your dream a go, or are even just curious about it, give it a try. Make the leap; who knows maybe, things will all seem to fall into place?[28:52] Advice for mompreneurs – invest in a good day-care for your kids, try bringing in someone to deep clean your house once a month at least, show up at your work desk consistently.[31:15] Erin's book recommendation for you – Building A Story Brand by Donald Miller[32:10] Where to connect with ErinAbout Erin PenningsErin Pennings is a B2B Copywriter with over fifteen years of marketing-copywriting experience. He learned to layer his strategies (my favorite!) and has built super successful farm that has allowed him to expand his business drastically. In today’s Law Chat, we have a recovering perfectionist with us. She started her business on her own terms because she knew that she was meant for the entrepreneur life. She ditched the big corporate giants and paved her path to support small businesses with her skills. Episode Introduction: In this episode of Law Chat With Girija, we are accompanied by an entrepreneur at heart, Kelly McInturff. She tells us about the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey, her pivot into it and how she built a life she loves by making the right choices for herself. Episode Summary: Kelly McInturff shares with us the experience she had while building her marketing firm, Bird & Hyssop where she helps entrepreneurs in creating clear marketing messages that resonate with their customers so they spend less time looking for clients and more time doing what they love. She also walks us through the process of picking her niche in business and the challenges she faced while doing so. She also tells us about her confidence jam, some fun moments and super valuable nuggets of knowledge. Main Takeaways: Kelly McInturff’s top three suggestions to a 22-year-old today: - Find something that you’re passionate about and you’re good at it too. - Go for it - try a lot, fail a lot & readjust a lot. - Re-train your brain to understand that you don’t always have to be perfect but the important thing is the effort. Most people don’t start their business thinking about the various aspects it would include (like Marketing, Law, etc.), that’s a potential path for you to pursue, to help others with what they’re struggling in. When changes happen in your personal life, it’s okay to show grace and give yourself a break in your professional life. One of the biggest challenges that mompreneurs have to overcome is the mom guilt. As a mother, it becomes important to separate your personal identity apart from just being a mom. You can do many things, it’s just not practical to do them all at once. There are tons of free resources on the internet that can help you get your work done more efficiently. Some of them discussed in this episode are Planoly, Trello & Asana. If you’re not asking people to buy your product -- that’s subconsciously leading them to believe that you’re not confident in your own product. Focus on providing a direct call-to-action on your website. Recommended Resource: Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald A. Donald Miller is due me a large commission for the number of new fans he has thanks to the book recommendation I posted a few months back explaining that his book “Building A Story Brand” was the best book I’ve read on marketing. First Ryan Deiss a genius digital marketer, who I believe is friends with Donald, read the book and recommended it to the audience, which I was a part of at Expert Empires business conference, then I read it and raved about it in my community of entrepreneurs and readers: "Ben’s Business Book Club" and on instagram. This started a trend of more people reading it, which has been sneezed all over this community and caused this group chat to happen so we can all share our key takeaways from “Building a Story Brand”. Enjoy! - Ben Laing (OnlineMarketingConsultant.co.uk and founder of Ben's Business Book Club)
If you've ever struggled to write your own content, explain what you do or introduce yourself with confidence... you might be missing one of 3 brand fundamentals that I'm talking about today.Your backstory, your brand story (whether for a personal brand or a "business" brand) and a one-liner or elevator pitch are all foundations of brand building that so many of us skip because they seem like they're a bit dry or too much work.Today I'm going to share...My own failure to use them (and what it cost me)What each of these 3 things are and where you'll use themHow to create the right balance of personal and professional in your backstoryThe brand story framework that changed the course of my businessAnd an example of how to write a memorable one-linerGrab a notepad and pen because this episode is jam-packed!Mentioned in this episode:My "back story" video on YouTubeMORE RESOURCESThe Magnetic Brand Quizhttps://magneticbrand.co/quizThe Magnetic Monthly Marketing Planhttps://magneticbrand.co/marketing-planWORK WITH ME1:1 Brand Coachinghttps://magneticbrand.co/brand-coachingStrategy Intensiveshttps://magneticbrand.co/brand-strategyMini Courseshttps://magneticbrand.co/coursesCONNECT WITH MEInstagram: @iamkatelizabethLinkedIn: Kat ElizabethYouTube: KatElizabethWebsite: magneticbrand.coEmail: kat@magneticbrand.co
Eddie and Terry explain the story telling framework that's used in popular movies, books and advertising. This is the ultimate branding formula and they use the book "Building A Story Brand" by Donald Miller as an outline. Enjoy!
Stories are how we connect with people and ideas. StoryBrand is how you craft your message to your customer. How can you do that most effectively? First, understand the story that is most important is your customer’s story, not your story. It's not about telling people how good your products or services happen to be. The story you want to be crystal clear on is about your customer and their internal and external interests and needs. So, how can you use the StoryBrand method to jumpstart your product and brand? Well, that’s the focus of this episode! This episode closes out the four-part series on using Lean Startup ideas and methodologies for your manufacturing business. In case you missed the other episodes, here’s a quick recap: we started with the Lean Startup method basics and utilizing the Business Model Canvas. Then we moved on to crafting your value proposition; learning how to connect what you do and what you want to offer with what the customer really wants. And last week we talked about the customer discovery process. We uncovered how to go about learning more about your customers. In the final episode of this series, I share some ideas on how to clarify your message to your customer or stakeholders using the StoryBrand method. We’ll dive deeper into these concepts: The story is about your customer - internal or external - and not about you Creating clarity for your customers but also for yourself StoryBrand - what it is and why it’s useful, plus using the StoryBrand worksheet StoryBrand Marketing ideas, creating a “one-liner” for your product or business, and the importance of a clear call-to-action Moving your customer from Curiosity to Enlightenment to Commitment My challenge to you this week is to try creating a “one-liner” for your business or project. And check out the StoryBrand book or the podcast and experiment with creating your own brand script using the seven steps mentioned in this episode. Coming up next time on Leading the Factory Forward, I’ll be talking about what we can learn from Finding the Space to Lead and creating new habits of mind and action. On today’s episode we are reviewing the book of the month. In order to be considered for book of the month, the book must meet a very simple criteria. It has to capable of changing you life, or your perspective on the world. Of course, whether it changes your life is up to you. You can consume the content, remark on how good it is and then continue your life without making any changes. In fact, that’s what most people do. If that’s what you do, you’re missing the point. This month’s book is “Building a Storybrand” by Donald Miller.
Sell ANYWHERE Free Offer Link: https://www.thesalesclassroom.com/ If you are in sales, you’re probably doing it wrong. I know. I was there-FOR YEARS. You go to the trainings, study all of the flyers, pamphlets, and brochures, and you know every feature of your product or service. You are a professional, you know your stuff, and you are ready to step in and be the hero! Before you put on your boots and start wearing your underwear on the outside, consider this: Do you wake up every morning, looking at the challenges and wish you had a hero? Or do you look at the day and its challenges and see yourself as the hero? Do your prospects care if you are some sort of hero with business superpowers? Not likely. Why not? Because before they are buyers (or “targets”-eek), they are people. Real people. And real people think just like you, and you are the hero of your own story, aren’t you? To quote the great Tina Turner, “we don’t need another hero!” But every hero needs a guide. I am a huge fan of Story Brand since reading How to Build A Story Brand by Donald Miller. He basically took the buyer’s journey and parallels it with the hero’s journey. That’s why I was super stoked to sit down with Story Brand’s Director of Sales, April Sunshine Hawkins after seeing her speak at our Global Coaches Conference. She brings such clarity to sales messaging in our discussion on the Sell ANYWHERE podcast. Your job is to find people where they are, not call them to where you want them. Then position yourself as the guide. They are Luke, you are Yoda. The guide gives knowledge and coaches the hero into action. What is interesting here is that almost ZERO product knowledge and training need to occur to get us to that point. (In fact, I find that often the deluge of training actually does more damage than good, in terms of the sales story.) Once you have their attention, you have to be New York QUICK in communicating how you will guide them. What do you do then? April gives a very simple formula for your bullet-proof one liner. Here it is:Problem Solution Success. What problem is your customer facing? (How does it help with their survival or thriving) How do you solve that problem? What life looks like if you overcome the problem. Gosh how much pressure has just been removed from your shoulders now that you don’t have to carry the burden of saving the world. Just be a guide, and find some peeps to help. We are all on a journey. We all need help getting to where we are going. I hope that April and I have been able to shed some sunshine on the path you are walking. Please take the opportunity to dig into the podcast and other resources mentioned. Here are some of my notes from the show: 7:30 the journey into being a speaker and facilitator at Story Brand 8:42 Origin of Sunshine An energy giving force. I want to provide energy for them along the way 10:30 Fundedby.org, April’s way to give back 13:37 serving with your gift 23:40 Everybody wakes up and THEY are the hero of their own story. They are not looking for Superman or Batman-THEY want to be the hero that rises up and wins they day. Whenever you can position your client as the hero, then what you are saying resonates with them. 27:30- If you confuse, you lose. We don’t have time to figure out what you are doing. Describe what you do in a clear, efficient manner, so they don’t have to “burn calories” to remember…and they will file you in the right part of the brain. 31:00 Keep it easy, the metaphor of the Bowling Ball 32:40 The curse of knowledge. This makes it difficult for us to be concise. 36:00 Creating your 1-Liner Problem Solution Success What problem is your customer facing? (Help with their survival or thriving) W What are most of them experiencing. Solution-what you offer. What life looks like if you overcome the problem. In Ben's Business Podcast episode #36 I do a mini book review and share one of my key takeaways from the New York Times Best Selling business book "Building a Story Brand" by Donald Miller. The key takeaway was focusing on the importance of having an obvious Call To Action (CTA) on your website. Covering: 1) What is a call to action? - Asking someone to take an action. - Direct Vs Transitional calls to action. 2) Stop Hiding your Buy Now Button - Noise on your site kills sales. - Call to action buttons need to stand out. - "People don't read websites, they scan them" 3) Repetition of your Call To Actions 7x - A person has read or hear something several times before they process information.

Guest - Donald Miller - CEO, StoryBrand Don helps companies "clarify their message so customers engage", he is the CEO of StoryBrand and a New York Times best-selling author. Don joins us this week on the Catalyst Sale podcast to discuss the StoryBrand Framework and how it applies to Sales professionals, marketers, and anyone looking to improve their success. Questions addressed What are two core functions of the human brain? What are prospects/contacts looking for when they scan your email? As a sales pro - should you be the hero? Why do we daydream? What are the 7 stages of the StoryBrand Framework? How does this apply to working with customers? Key Takeaways The first priority of the human brain is survival The next thing the human brain tries to do is conserve calories. Stories create engagement. Simple, clear messaging wins. Customers look for what they can understand the fastest. The purpose of the guide is to help the hero beat the villain and win the day. We all wake up in our story in the hero role, when we come across another hero we compete for resources. When you stop talking about their problem, the story ends. Give your customers a plan, provide the steps necessary for your customer to win the day. Break things down into simple steps, this communicates that working with "us" will be easy. Make sure your call to actions are direct, too often they are passive.
