Today on Too Opinionated we chat with George Baron, the multi-talented mastermind who wrote, directed, and stars in the highly anticipated film, The Blue Rose, which premiered July 12th (available both on VOD and in theaters)! This gripping horror film follows two rookie detectives on a quest to solve a homicide. They find themselves trapped in an alternate reality filled with their worst nightmares. It's a mind-bending horror film that's sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The Blue Rose marks George's feature directorial debut. It was inspired by an Immersive Theater Art Show he directed in February of 2020, featuring many of the same characters in the film — all inspired by the artwork of his friend and longtime collaborator, Sophia Victoria Frizzell. The Blue Rose is a “pastel-noir” film inspired by the golden age of Hollywood and the mysteries that lie underneath. Although not a straight period piece, he set it in the quasi-50s — a time that was ripe with repressed fears and desires — to enhance themes of gender fluidity and facing fears in a universe that doesn't allow them to be expressed, which are themes George hopes to explore in his future directorial work. George is no stranger to the spotlight. You might recognize him as Arty from Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, where he starred alongside Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, and Molly Shannon. He can also be seen in Adult Interference and has guest-starred on hit shows such as Two Broke Girls, and Teachers. George's talents don't stop at film and TV; he's also a theatre fanatic, having directed Spring Awakening at the Stella Adler Theater and performing in major productions. Author's Note: This podcast was recorded after Universal Music Group (UMG) removed its entire catalog from TikTok. Also, the song, “One More Song (demo)” was featured in the film ROCKBOTTOM, which is now on Prime Video NOT Netflix. It is a pleasure to welcome pop/R&B band ICYDAY to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.ICYDAY is made up of Sloane Morgan Siegel, David Bloom, and guitarist-pianist Isaac Cohen. Sloane portrayed the titular characters in Dwight in Shining Armor and Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street and appeared in Chartered, Game Shakers, The Goldbergs, and NCIS. Sloane voiced Robin (Tim Drake) in the Gotham Knights video game. David portrayed Kevin in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, Stanley Zielinski in Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Josh in American Born Chinese, and Teenage Al in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. He also appeared in CSI: NY, Modern Family, The Goldbergs, and Arrow. Sloane and David first met on the set of The Goldbergs years ago and have known each other since they were 13. Sloane and David teamed up with Isaac to pursue this musical passion project. On January 26, the trio released their debut single, “Open Up” was released. The catchy, laidback single demonstrates the group's serious musical talent for crafting melody, blending elements of jazz, pop, indie, and funk into a commercial sound you can envision in the background of a film or your favorite coffee shop. “Open Shop” is an honest song about wanting to know somebody better, the ebbs and flows of a relationship, with tasteful R&B electric guitar and neo-soul sound. ICYDAY dropped their second single, a heartbreak love song called “Love Isn't Fair,” on February 15, followed by their third song, “One More Song,” on March 8. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, ICYDAY shared their origin story, the stories behind their songs, and their take on using TikTok to build their fanbase. “You’ve got a president who is so wrapped up in his own flawed masculinity that he won’t say that for him to acknowledge this disease is equivalent to him admitting his own weakness, his own powerlessness, his own vulnerability. He won’t wear a mask because he thinks it makes him look weak.” On today’s program, comedian, actor, and writer Michael Ian Black joins the podcast. He is recently out with a new book, entitled “A Better Man: A (Mostly Serious) Letter to My Son.” The book, which takes the form of an extended letter to his college-age son, is both a plea and a roadmap for young boys and men to re-examine what it means to be “manly” and what masculinity really means in the modern world. Long past are the days, according to Michael Ian Black, where masculinity needs to be proven by the classic feats of strength. Yet boys are often afraid to express their emotions, as kids and as they get older— and the results can be disastrous. Is there a remedy for this? Michael Ian Black is a multi-media talent who’s starred in numerous films and TV series, written and/or directed two films, is a prolific author and commentator, and regularly tours the country performing his ribald brand of jokes and observations. He most recently starred in TVLand's “The Jim Gaffigan Show” and Comedy Central’s “Another Period.” He also reprised one of his iconic film roles in Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later,” and previously in "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp." His third standup comedy special, “Noted Expert,” was released on Epix. Michael regularly tours the country as a stand-up comedian and lives in Connecticut with his wife and two children. --------------------------------------- Please consider supporting Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk via our Patreon: patreon.com/talkingbeats In addition to early episode access, bonus episodes, and other benefits, you will contribute to us being able to present the highest quality substantive, long-form interviews with the world's most compelling people. Episode 50 - Michael Ian Black, pt. 1Hello and goddam we made it to FIFTY!After this year and a half of letting politics and social commentary exist on this show only as it came up within the conversations, for the first time, I’ve decided to talk for a few minutes all by myself at the top of the show, pretty much completely off topic, pretty much about my working through how to be a 53-year-old white straight male ally in these days of Trump and Weinstein and C.K.If you can make it through that ...Michael Ian Black and I talk about everything from our moms (of course) and his recent memoir, “Naval Gazing,” about his mother and her illness, among other things, to his podcast, “How to Be Amazing,” to dream jobs, to his twitter activism fighting Trump and all the other horrible shit therein that’s happened this year, to his three-decade (what I’m calling) love-feud with Marc Maron. Oh, and fame. We talk about fame too. Here’s verifiable information his bio says about him:Michael Ian Black is a multi-media talent who’s starred in numerous films and TV series, written and/or directed two films, is a prolific author and commentator, and regularly tours the country performing his ribald brand of jokes and observations. He most recently starred in TVLand's “The Jim Gaffigan Show” and Comedy Central’s “Another Period.” He also reprised one of his iconic film roles in Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later,” and previously in "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp." His third standup comedy special, “Noted Expert,” was released on Epix.Black has authored 11 books, including the recently released best seller, “A Child’s First Book of Trump.” He’s written two well-received memoirs: “Navel Gazing: True Tales of Bodies, Mostly Mine (but also my mom’s, which I know sounds weird)”, and “You're Not Doing It Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death and Other Humiliations.”Eleanor Gordon-Smith’s “This American Life” piece: by turns upsetting, fascinating amusing and maybe ultimately depressing story on trying to get a few Australian men to reconsider the “harmless”ness catcalling and ass-slapping.https://m.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/603/once-more-with-feeling?act=1#act-1Nicole Stamp CNN “What Decent Men Can Do” - If you listen to my intro, you’ll know I’m not satisfied with this as being enough, at least for me, but it’s a darn good start:http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/21/opinions/what-men-can-do-me-too-stamp-opinion/index.htmlHere’s the "How if You’re a Man … Trash" piece I talked about in the intro:https://verysmartbrothas.theroot.com/how-if-you-re-a-man-to-deal-with-the-fact-that-you-re-1820410857?utm_source=theroot_facebook&utm_medium=socialflowHere's my essay, "Peep Show":https://psiloveyou.xyz/peep-show-9912979642cdWant more on the awful topics of recent weeks? Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talk about the first four episodes of the BBC series The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy from 1981. After debuting as a successful radio play on BBC Four, Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was adapted as a novel to be followed by this BBC miniseries. These first four episodes cover the first book in the six-book trilogy (!!!). Several, but not all, of the actors from the radio series reprised their role for this show. After waking up to a bulldozer advancing upon his home, Arthur Dent (Simon Jones) tries to stop it. Before the day is over, he's found it his best friend Ford Prefect (David Dixon) is really an alien, been thrown out of an air-lock into space, and discovered the true origins of Earth. The typically low BBC budget doesn't help things, although the hand-drawn animated sequences of the guide are quite a treat as is the witty, droll dialogue. Mat finds the pilot of the new BBC series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency to be too violent for its own good. On the other hand, he feels the new Netfilx series Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later is far superior to Wet Hot American Summer: First Day at Camp. Thrasher felt Get Out lived up to the hype and insists you watch it at once. He also caught enough of Ascent to Hell to realize it's dreadful. It’s a brand new episode of your favorite Netflix podcast, and we don’t waste any time going through the titles that are coming to Netflix Instant in August. Don’t get too excited, there isn’t a lot of quality, but there is DinoTruckz!! And then we take some people hostage while Bruce Willis tries to save his family in Hostage (directed by Florent Emilio Siri) from 2005. Then we get creepy as we film a naked Mark Duplass during his ‘tubby-time’ in Creep (directed by Patrick Brice) from 2015. And last, but definitely not least, we go back to camp with every funny person that’s ever existed in Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp! All of this plus forgotten Reading Rainbow books, Tyler Perry’s unnecessary vanity, Guy Fieri’s unmistakable look as the Smash Mouth frontman, and the best beverage the 90s forgot: Fruitopia! Also submit drawings of what you think “Mr. Netflix” looks like, for a chance to win…something..don’t worry we’ll make it worth your while! got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflixinstant@gmail.com
I can't believe we're doing an episode on football. Football is a repugnant sport filled with head injuries, clacking of helmets, and brain damage. Did we mention a lot of these guys end up killing themselves? Okay, well it's not totally fair to focus just on the whole concussion thing when football is also an exciting sport! We have to talk about a sport? Again? OH MY GOD KILL ME. But not until after this interview with Mookie Blaiklock, a hardcore New England Patriots fan. Mookie Blaiklock is one of the great joys of our lives. The man is a powerhouse of fun and giggles. That and he and his girlfriend Jacquie have two of the cutest little dogs ever who they call the Garbage Babies (check em out on Insta, y'all! @garbagebabies). You can see Mookie in like every single shot of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and as the nasty next door pervert in Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. “Just as I suspected, toxic waste.” This week on THE SCRIPT, we analyze the new Netflix Series, reboot, reimagination, fever dream Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. What a screenwriting mindfuck. What a screenwriting challenge. What story components did creators Michael Showalter and David Wain smartly bring forward from the film to the series and what did they unfortunately leave behind? What is the slight difference in comedic tone that made Wet Hot a comedy cult classic and The State a comedy experiment? How does a director manage the intersection of improv comedy and scripted comedy? Despite our recurring criticism of Streaming Studio Pilots feeling incomplete in terms of writing a spec, we loved this series— independent vision with broad distribution.
