The search for life beyond Earth is no longer science fiction—it takes a lot of data, powerful telescopes and a bit of cosmic detective work. And at the center of this search is University of Chicago astrophysicist Jacob Bean. Bean was part of the team that made history by detecting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a distant planet using the James Webb Space Telescope—a major step forward in our ability to study exoplanets.Bean uses cutting-edge tools and discoveries that are reshaping how we think about planet habitability, biosignatures and our place in the universe. From potentially habitable exoplanets like K2-18b to false hopes like Gliese 486b, Bean shares why the atmospheres of these faraway worlds might hold the key to one of humanity's oldest questions: Are we alone in the universe?

In this reflective and personal episode, I share a powerful insight that emerged during my weekly guided meditation and journaling group, Curious Minds, in Mount Maunganui. As the group grows and flourishes, I have been facing an internal resistance — the sneaky, familiar voice that whispers, “This is too good to be true.” Do you ever find yourself thinking that? I explore the roots of this mindset, how it shows up in different areas of my life, and why many of us struggle to feel safe in moments of success and joy. I also offer gentle, grounded strategies to help you expand your capacity for joy without self-sabotage. In this episode you will learn: What the "too good to be true" mindset is and how it might be showing up in your own life Why success and happiness can sometimes feel unsafe or unfamiliar How protective pessimism can rob you of presence and peace The connection between fear of loss, control, and self-sabotage Practical ways to create space between your thoughts and your truth How to gently rewire your brain with more supportive, regulating thoughts The importance of building your capacity to hold joy — and why it's a practice Insights from the Curious Minds group and the value of community reflection - What stood out the most for you in this episode? What if the key to innovation lies in embracing the absurd? In this episode, we sit down with David Carson, creator of Dumbify, to explore how “thinking dumber” can unlock powerful creative breakthroughs. Challenging conventional notions of identity and intelligence, we examine how embracing the fear of looking foolish fosters curiosity, adaptability, and deeper problem-solving skills.Together, we navigate the societal constraints that suppress unconventional thinking, uncovering how a beginner's mind and unresolved psychological patterns influence creativity. From Montessori classrooms to cutting-edge tech spaces, we discuss the environments that nurture curiosity, allowing us to accept uncertainty and reframe “I don't know” as a launchpad for discovery.Expanding beyond creativity, we explore the role of identity, vulnerability, and discomfort in reshaping how we approach challenges. Like an athlete refining their craft, we discover how stepping into the discomfort of new ideas can transform not just our metacognitive processes, but our sense of self. We also examine the balance between humor and harsh judgment, cooperation and competition—revealing how innovation thrives in the middle ground.Through David's insights, we uncover a metacognitive approach to creativity—one that celebrates inquiry, welcomes the unexpected, and redefines intelligence as the courage to process differently.Tune in and discover how exploring “dumb” ideas might just be the smartest move you can make.Highlights(04:03) Embracing Dumb Thinking for Success (114 Seconds)(07:52) Embracing Dumb Ideas for Mindfulness (123 Seconds)(12:06) Overcoming Fear of Looking Stupid (96 Seconds)(21:18) Montessori Education Impact on Learning (71 Seconds)(27:56) Fostering Creativity and Trust in Workplace (100 Seconds)(35:05) The Essence of Mediocrity (49 Seconds)(39:08) Creative Collaborations in Fashion Industry (56 Seconds)(53:25) Innovating Through Frustration and Context (75 Seconds)(57:36) Originality Through Diverse Perspectives (75 Seconds)(01:07:35) Approaching Problems With Fresh Eyes (55 Seconds)Chapters(00:00) - Thinking Dumber(07:29) - Embracing Mindfulness for Creative Thinking(13:19) - Reimagining Identity and Productive Thinking(17:37) - Fostering a Curious Mind(21:18) - Creating a Curious and Collaborative Environment(27:22) - Navigating Judgment for Creative Innovation(35:55) - Exploring Middle Ground and Creativity(46:11) - Navigating Self-Identity in Problem Solving(01:00:16) - Embracing Dumb Ideas for InnovationKeywordsDumbify, Thinking Dumber, Innovation, Creativity, Mindfulness, Beginner's Mind, Curiosity, Identity, Self-Improvement, Judgment, Middle Ground, Humor, Collaboration, Improv, Coopetition, Internal Family Systems, Decision-Making, Iteration, Mistakes, Business CultureJOIN US ON INSTAGRAM: @thelightinsidepodcastSUBSCRIBE: pod.link/thelightinsideCredits:Featured Guest: David CarsonExecutive Producer: Jeffrey BeseckerExecutive Program Director: Anna GetzMixing, Engineering, Production and Mastering: Aloft Media Studio

This week, I got to sit down again with the one and only Brock Meier—author, former scientist, and all-around fascinating guy. His friends and family call him “the most interesting man in the world,” and honestly, they might be right! Our first conversation covered everything from ancient civilizations to whirlwind romance, so I knew I had to bring him back for more. Here's what we got into this time:His early days in the lab, working with lasers and infrared tech before most people even knew what they were. How that technology has completely changed the way we explore the world today. The top-secret stuff he couldn't talk about (but hey, we tried!).His unexpected passion for winemaking—specifically, crafting wine from things like jalapeños and grass clippings. The science behind fermentation and how his research background actually plays into it.The big question—will there be another book after The Stone Cutter?Life in the Texas Hill Country and where he finds inspiration. This was such a fun conversation, jumping from cutting-edge science to creative passions and everything in between. If you love history, technology, and unexpected stories, you're going to love this episode!_____________________________________Lisa's Website: https://brockmeierauthor.com/_____________________________________Link to all things Not in a Huff Podcast: https://linktr.ee/notinahuffpodcastPlease follow/subscribe to the podcast to be the first to see new episodes when they come out each week. Children truly are natural learners, approaching the world with wide-eyed wonder and boundless curiosity. Their developing minds aren't just passively absorbing information—they're actively seeking to understand everything around them. At the heart of this learning process lies the powerful tool of questioning. Those endless "why" questions that sometimes test your patience? They're actually your child's brain building neural pathways and creating understanding. Each question represents their mind working to connect new information with what they already know, helping them construct their understanding of how the world works. When children ask questions, they're not simply gathering facts—they're processing information, identifying patterns, and creating meaning. This questioning nature is the engine that drives their cognitive development, turning everyday experiences into valuable learning opportunities. By encouraging and thoughtfully answering their questions, you're not just providing information—you're nurturing their natural learning process and helping them develop the critical thinking skills they'll use throughout life. Everyone, Sheevaun here, driving for your success and a little thing happened today that I thought would be beneficial for you to remember in your own life. And today I got locked out of my car because my phone, which unlocks my car, was inside it and it's not supposed to lock when your phones inside the car and I did and you know I mean we get so caught up in our heads about well what do we do I had no contact information everything's in our phones I had no spare key my computer was in the car I had no contact information even if I had made at home and there was no way for me to make it home and I didn't have anybody's phone number remembered in my brain so you know I mean for me I really got to thinking well just go home you know I'll find people's phone numbers I thought why I don't know where I have people's phone numbers so be prepared is my point And remember at least one phone number, have a backup plan. And more importantly, the purpose of this is to ask for help. I went to the store and one of the guys at the store said, "Oh, that happened to my mom recently." And she just called the dealer and the dealer had somebody come out and do it. But the person I called, the dealer I called, well, Tesla, they had me verify all kinds of information. Well, how many, you know, what was the level of charge you have? I was like, I don't know. I left. I left. I left my house at a certain amount. She said, well, it's not the same charge. Yes, of course, because I had used the charge. And so the thing that you have to do is rely upon asking and be kind on the journey and continue to ask for help. I had to run back and forth to from where this phone was located, it was a stationary phone, not a cell phone. I didn't borrow a cell phone, the stationary phone in a store, I had to run back and forth. And fortunately, everybody, you know, played along and they didn't hang up the phone. They helped me on this journey. People are willing to help if you're willing to ask and you're willing to be kind about it. And so, really look outside of yourself for the goodness of humanity and rather than get angry or frustrated or you know even flummoxed. It's really an opportunity to look around and find your solution. Be curious. Be curious enough to find that solution. Curiosity is going to get you further than You know curiosity about well, what's possible? I wonder I wonder how this is all gonna work out I wonder if I'm gonna be able to get into my car I wonder if I'm gonna be able to find people's phone numbers and so have a backup plan also be curious have a backup plan and Have that backup plan in writing on a piece of paper somewhere because we are so reliant on our phones. I know I am and everything is stored inside of there and if all of those devices are in the same place what are you going to do? So remember you have the goodness of your heart and the goodness of the other people in the world who really do want to help you. They do want to help you find a solution and get to the root of the issue and they will help people more easily when people are kind. Fortunately, I was kind enough. So my name is Sheevaun Moran. Our Irish Stew Drinks Party is back with PJ Rigney, founder of The Shed Distillery--home of the breakout star of the burgeoning Irish gin category, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, along with its Sausage Tree Irish Vodka, and Drumshanbo Irish Whiskey. The magic happened when PJ rolled the dice after an innovative career in the global drinks industry to strike out on his own.“To build a distillery is one thing, to create the product is another thing, but to create a way of communicating to consumers to build a brand is another thing entirely,” he says.PJ wanted his distillery to be in the wild, un-manicured heart of rural Ireland, a place of curiosity & inspiration, surrounded by nature, immersed in rich history. He found it all in the beautiful village of Drumshanbo Co.Leitrim, on the shores of Lough Allen, at the foothills of Sliabh an Iarainn (The Iron Mountain). His Shed Distillery is now a major contributor to the Leitrim economy and a draw for spirits enthusiasts and tourists worldwide.Join us as we explore the role of innovation and storytelling in spirits sector success straight from the curious mind of PJ Rigney.LinksThe Shed Distillery WebsiteX/Twitter Instagram FacebookYouTubeLinkedInDrumshanbo Gunpowder Irish GinWebsitePJ RigneyLinkedIn

This week we sat down with Kathy Kipp Clayton and Bill Turnbull to talk about the fascinating chapters they contributed to a new book entitled No Division among You: Creating Unity in a Diverse Church. Bill, and his wife Susan, are two of Faith Matters' co-founders. Kathy and her husband Whitney have served around the world on Church assignments for the past two decades. Whitney served in the presidency of the Seventy until his release in 2020. They now help supervise and often travel the world with the Tabernacle Choir. Kathy is an author and an education innovator. In their essays, Kathy and Bill share how the everyday, sometimes uncomfortable situations we find ourselves in at Church can be a profound opportunity to get curious about what others are seeing, especially when we don't see eye to eye with them. They talk through their own experiences learning to love people they didn't expect to love, and finding ways to open themselves to questions rather than fear — to look at differences or aberrations from the norm as ways to connect. At a time when in-person gatherings, clubs, and associations are in decline across society, these experiences we have with others at Church might be increasingly rare. We really hope you enjoy this conversation.
There is nothing more powerful than a story well told. Woven into the very fabric of what makes us human, story fuels connection. It fosters empathy. And it holds the power to impact not just the individual but humanity at large. Few understand this better than Brian Grazer—a man devoted to the idea that when curiosity and conversation combine, great art is made. One of Hollywood's most prolific film producers, Brian and his Imagine Entertainment partner Ron Howard are responsible for a litany of critically acclaimed, box-office hit films and television shows including Apollo 13, 8 Mile, Splash, Arrested Development, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, and many more. His productions have been honored with numerous awards including an astounding 10 Oscar wins, 50 Emmys, and 11 Golden Globes. Today we explore Brian's unique approach to storytelling, why he believes questions are more important than answers, and why curiosity has been the “superpower” that fueled his rise as one of Hollywood's leading producers and visionaries. Curiosity is so central to Brian's success in fact that he wrote a book about it entitled, A Curious Mind, which he has recently expanded upon in a newly released version. It was a thrill to sit down with a man that I deeply respect and admire. This conversation left me with a newfound appreciation of curiosity not only as an art form, but as a powerful driver of human happiness.
