We were visiting the George Herbert Walker Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas with David and Sallie Burnett in April of 2022. David took the seat behind the Resolute Desk and said these prophetic words- “It is up to us to give back to society. It is what makes us great.” Not all giants stand tall. Some walk among us quietly, leaving footprints not in sand but in the hearts of those they meet. Such was David Burnett. Lafayette, Colorado, is like many small towns—a place where neighbors know each other's names, where the rhythm of life hums along at a steady, familiar pace. But every so often, a soul comes along who doesn't just live in a town, across a cul-de-sac, but weaves himself into its very fabric. David Burnett was that kind of man.He was more than just a neighbor—he was a force for good. A board member on countless nonprofit organizations, he didn't just believe in making a difference; he did it, over and over again. And not by standing on soapboxes, not with grand speeches, but with something far more powerful: a giving heart, a generous spirit, and the courage to ask others to join him. Consider this: David served on the board of the Association for Community Living in Boulder County, advocating for those with developmental disabilities. He sat on the finance committee, ensuring funds were wisely allocated to provide services and opportunities for those who needed them most. At EPIC, he was a trusted advisor, working to expand employer-sponsored childcare. He understood that when working parents had reliable childcare, families and businesses thrived. And so, he worked. Not for accolades. Not for recognition. But because it was the right thing to do. He lent his expertise and heart to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Board, knowing that quality healthcare should never be a privilege—it should be a promise. And the YMCA of Northern Colorado? David's fingerprints are there, too. The recent opening of the Inspire Preschool and Infant Care was a testament to his unwavering belief that all children—regardless of background—deserved a strong start. His dream was free universal preschool, a vision he pursued with the same fire that fueled his every endeavor. Some people shy away from asking for help. Not David. He knew the secret—people want to give; they just need someone to show them how. And he was that someone. A phone call, a handshake, a moment of eye contact—David had a way of making you believe that yes, you could do more, you should do more. And because he believed it, you believed it too. He and his wife, Sallie, raised their daughter, Brittany, with the same values. She watched, she learned, she followed in his footsteps. Devoting her life to nonprofits wasn't just a career choice; it was a calling, a legacy. Her father's legacy. And that legacy lives on. Recently, the David Burnett Childcare Center opened at the YMCA of Northern Colorado. Brittany said, “Dad worked so incredibly hard for this project and for free universal preschool for children of all ages across Colorado. His vision was to open access for early childhood education to give them a chance to succeed at an early age. I am proud of his legacy and heart for others.” As for David's career? He was a bank executive with Wells Fargo who happened to see beyond the money and into the currency of life itself. But even the strongest among us are not invincible. Colon cancer came for David at 55. Too soon. Far too soon. And yet, some legacies are not measured in years but in lives touched. In lessons taught. In communities made stronger, charities made richer, hearts made fuller. David Burnett was better than a friend. Better than a brother. More than next of kin. He was a resolute role model.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

John Konsin is co-founder and CEO of Prapela, a company pioneering noninvasive stimulation to improve infant breathing and oxygenation. The company's infant mattress technology has already received two Breakthrough Device designations from the US FDA, which expedites clearance for clinical usage. Prapela expects to debut an additional application based on the technology in 2025. John and Wendy connected at the Redefining Early Stage of Investment (RESI) Conference in Boston, which Life Science Nation hosted. (Wendy recently interviewed Dennis Ford, founder and CEO of Life Science Nation, which specializes in fundraising for life sciences companies.) In this episode, John describes three clinical applications for Prapela's technology and outlines the company's global expansion strategy, focusing on providing valuable insight into navigating international markets, regulatory challenges, and cross-cultural communication. The Science Behind Safer Sleep At the heart of Prapela's innovation is that 62% of healthy infants experience irregular breathing patterns and oxygen desaturation in their first three months of life. The Collaborative Home Infant Monitoring Evaluation (CHIME) study monitored over 1,000 healthy infants at home using hospital-grade equipment to track their respiration, cardiac activity, movement, and oxygen saturation levels. Episodes varied in frequency, severity, and duration among babies—some experienced them once, while others showed multiple occurrences. Most significantly, these breathing irregularities occurred not just in at-risk infants but in otherwise healthy babies, highlighting a previously unrecognized challenge in early infant development. (Ramanathan, R., et al. (2001). Cardiorespiratory events recorded on home monitors: Comparison of healthy infants with those at increased risk for SIDS. JAMA, 285(17), 2199-2207.) Prapela's infant mattress helps to regulate babies' breathing through a gentle, barely perceptible vibration. The innovation grew out of research by Dr. David Paydarfar, who, in the 1990s, discovered that a specific type of random vibration, known scientifically as "stochastic" vibration, could improve the “pacemaker function,” the neurons in a baby's brain that controls automatic breathing. The vibration is so subtle it moves less than half the diameter of a human hair, making it effective and non-disruptive to sleep patterns. The Hospital-First Strategy The company has secured over $8 million in funding through grants and awards, allowing them to maintain control while developing their technology. John says this will enable the company to seek equity investment from a position of strength, with FDA clearance on the horizon and a clear path to commercialization. Their market strategy began in hospitals, aiming to directly and immediately impact infant care in critical settings. This approach is grounded in decades of successful medical device launches, which built a foundation of clinical credibility before venturing into the broader consumer landscape. The technology has already demonstrated its potential, reducing reliance on supplemental oxygen and minimizing the need for traditional breathing interventions. John envisions a future where "Prapela Inside" becomes as recognizable in infant care as "Intel Inside" is in computers, starting with the 52 global manufacturers of hospital bassinets and incubators: [W]e we can make this mattress fit any infant sleep device worldwide. So it doesn't matter if it's an incubator, bassinet, crib, or cot, as they use the term in international markets, right? We can make it fit those products. So, our strategy is similar to that of Intel with the microchip. You'll see a little badge when you buy a computer from Dell or some other company. It says Intel inside. By positioning their technology as a vital component that transforms standard infant care equipment into advanced breathing support systems, Prapela aims to revolutionize hospital infant care worldwide. Following FDA approval, Prapela plans to pursue regulatory clearance in other markets, initially focusing on Europe, India, and the Middle East. The sequential approach allows them to leverage their FDA clearance while adapting to local regulatory requirements in each new market. Cultural Intelligence in Global Marketing John offers valuable insight into cross-cultural communication and marketing. He emphasizes several key principles for successful global expansion: Language Simplification: English is widely spoken in international business, but vocabulary depth varies significantly. John advocates using simpler terms and friendly communication to bridge language gaps. Local Market Adaptation: Success in one market doesn't guarantee success in another. Companies must adapt messaging, pricing, and marketing approaches to local market conditions rather than forcing an American-centric approach. Brand Management: While maintaining global brand consistency is essential, give local managers some latitude in adapting messages to their markets. This is particularly critical when moving from clinical to consumer marketing, where terms like "calmness" might carry different cultural connotations across markets. He underscores the importance of remaining open to and respectful of local customs and traditions in international business relationships with a memorable story from his early career in Mexico. The general managers of manufacturing operations presented him with a stuffed armadillo. Initially puzzled by the gift, he later learned it symbolized appreciation for his patience and understanding of their culture. Brand Identity Across Borders John explains that "Prapela" was carefully constructed from Latin roots to create a unique name that wouldn't carry unintended meanings in other languages. This thoughtful approach helps avoid the pitfalls that some major companies have encountered, such as the famous case of Chevrolet's Nova in Latin American markets, where the name unfortunately translated to "doesn't go." The company's branding strategy balances global consistency with local flexibility from the outset. It maintains core clinical messaging that resonates with medical professionals worldwide while recognizing the need for nuanced consumer-market approaches. John explains that exercise is particularly important when communicating concepts like infant calmness or comfort, as cultural interpretations can vary significantly. In this week's episode of the Balancing Chaos podcast, Kelley welcomes Taylor Kulik, an advocate for families who choose not to sleep train their infants. Taylor is an occupational therapist turned holistic sleep consultant with a passion for non-toxic living, homeschooling, and snuggling babies all night. Years ago, Taylor was struggling with trusting what she knew was best for her children, and was consumed by fear-based parenting. This experience led to her passion for sharing her experiences and education with other parents who are going through the same journey to help lead them from fear to freedom.Today, Kelley and Taylor discuss the concept of self-soothing and how babies are not capable of self-regulation. Instead, babies are meant to co-regulate and borrow calm from a calm caregiver. They discuss how certain types of sleep training can raise cortisol levels in infants, insights on infant sleep and how to bed share safely, how co-sleeping benefits mental health for both parents and children, how to transition children into their own beds, and the most common reasons beyond children that adults aren't sleeping well or deal with insomnia. Aber was steckt dahinter? Warum sehen wir das als Ideal? Was machen Schlaflernprogramme mit unseren Kindern? If you’ve gone through a trying experience and NOT had the support or services that you needed, then you become distinctly passionate about helping others find those services. If those services don’t exist, then you may be determined to help provide for others exactly what YOU needed and didn’t have. This is precisely the story of today’s guest, who turned her lemons into lemonade after her own experiences and lack of support inspired her to fill the need in her area. Meisha Shockley is the owner and executive director of Shore Grace, a family wellness center providing wrap-around services to support families on the eastern shore of Maryland who are welcoming a new baby to their home. Meisha is a doula, speaker, and coach with a specialty in maternal mental health for women of color, high risk pregnancies, prematurity, and pre-eclampsia awareness. She holds a BA in Rehabilitation Counseling and is currently pursuing her MA in Marriage and Family Counseling with a specialty in Sex Education. It was her own experience with pre-eclampsia and the premature birth of her daughter that led to the opening of Shore Grace. Show Highlights: After college, Meisha worked full-time in case management with moms who just needed support When she was 24 weeks pregnant with her second child, she went to a walk-in clinic with a headache and swollen feet, not realizing her blood pressure was dangerously high and she would be admitted to the hospital After tests showed pre-eclampsia, she was stabilized and discharged She saw her Ob the next day, was readmitted to a different hospital, educated about pre-eclampsia, and put on meds to go home on bed rest At 25 weeks, she was told she would have to deliver the baby soon and was put in ICU on bed rest At 27 weeks, an ultrasound showed obstructed blood flow to the baby and a C-section was scheduled, but then rushed up as an immediate life or death situation When her daughter was born, weighing 1 lb. 6.9 oz., she remembers them saying, “It’s a girl!” Why she didn’t want to see her baby because she thought she would be burying this baby soon The baby went to NICU and she didn’t see her for two days A pivotal moment when her husband said, “Our daughter is in there fighting, and I need you to fight with her.” Even though the baby had bleeding on the brain and a hole in her heart, she was not in critical condition and had stabilized How Meisha started spending more and more time with the baby 70 days in NICU and then the scariest part: bringing her home at 3 lbs. With no one to turn to, Meisha battled postpartum depression After bringing her daughter home in August, she found out she was pregnant again in November As she started worrying and knew she was not ready for another pregnancy, she started seeing a therapist As she started journaling and using Facebook as an outlet to share, she developed a following She felt frustrated about the lack of education about pre-eclampsia How she became interested in becoming a doula, because it is the kind of support that SHE needed She started Mothering Mother Postpartum Doula Services, but knew families in her area needed more than just birth support Shore Grace Family Wellness was born, providing doulas and counselors whose goal is “to touch families wherever they are in their walk” Why Shore Grace builds lifelong relationships with families and not just provides short-term help Meisha’s efforts to break the stigma and generational habits with black women about not going to therapy or talking about the hard things Why she takes very good care of her mental health and pays attention to her triggers How she and her husband teach a Postpartum Recovery and Infant Care class together Resources: www.shoregracefamily.org Find Shore Grace on Instagram and Facebook: @ShoreGraceFam and Shore Grace Fam Find Meisha on Instagram: @MeishaShockley

Since the Prathers are grandparents for the first time with a three-month old grandson, they thought this would be a great time for a show on infant health care! In this episode, find out: --Why Structure-Function Health Care during an infant's formative years can benefit their long-term health. And why Dr. Prather says this type of care is where children should be instead of Disease Care. --That children who have 6 or more antibiotics before the age of 5 are 6 times more likely to develop learning disabilities. And why Dr. Prather says children should be kept away from pharmaceuticals (even over-the-counter ones). --How babies "love" the gentle, non-force Chiropractic adjustments in Dr. Prather's office. And why Dr. Prather says it is the safest form of health care based on insurance premiums of health care providers. --That Colic (which affects 40% of babies) comes from the gut, where infants have "exquisite sensitivity". And how Dr. Prather uses probiotics, herbals, and Homeopathics to give babies relief when medical options have little to offer. --How a baby's gut health impacts their I.Q., the strength of their immune system, and even their tendency to get ear infections. And why Dr. Prather says there is a connection between ADD/ADHD and gut health. --How Dr. Prather helps Otitis Media (Ear Infections) through Chiropractic adjustments, Diathermy, and Homeopathy. And why recommendations of removal of Adenoids and Tonsils are often unnecessary after Dr. Prather's natural approach. --Why breastfeeding is the best way to maintain the health of a baby, with 60% fewer health problems in breastfed babies. --The diagnostics necessary for young children, including a stool kit every six months up until the age of six. And why Dr. Prather says this will result in an allergy-free child that doesn't get sick. --Why an annual Hair Analysis can help prevent Heavy Metal Toxicity in children, who are far more sensitive to such toxicities compared to adults. And how Centers for Disease Control studies show 40% of children suffer from Heavy Metal Toxicity. --How Chiropractic adjustments on a child's nervous system can even impact their behavior so that the adjustments make recommended medications like Ritalin unnecessary. www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com
