Pro cocker spaniel trainer Gene Barnhardt joins me to cover all things flushing ... and more! You've seen Gene handling dogs on Wingshooting USA TV, and now we'll hear his insights into spaniels from retrieving to range, quartering to water work. Gene is also a breeder so expect insights on how to find the best pup, too. We'll talk teaching steadiness, how to hunt with flushers, mistakes we make when training a flushing dog, and how a "place board" is the ultimate retrieving tool. Gene also offers a couple unique observations on what to do - and not do - when your dog brings a bird back to you ... Welcome to Season 5, Episode 32! We love having conversations with a lot of amazing authors of a lot of fabulous books. It's even more fun when we're able to invite an amazing author who's also a long-time friend or family member. So this episode is exciting for us because our guest is Kimberly Tso, the author of the new picture book Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken which is published by Third State Books (one of our favorite publishers)! And yes, we've known Kim for the better part of three decades. Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken is a picture book inspired by the true story of Lillie, a real chicken trained to play tic-tac-toe in New York's Chinatown Fair arcade, and her relocation to a farm for rescued animals. Featuring vibrant paintings of Chinatown by Louie Chin, Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken showcases a local cultural touchstone and shows how children can stand up for what they believe in and solve tough problems with clever thinking. You don't have to wait till Tic-Tac-Toe Chicken's release date on August 19, 2025, because it's available for pre-order through Third State Books, Bookshop, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and more! You can even get a signed copy from Once Upon a Time Bookstore. Kim is an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) SoCal and SCBWI LA. She loves the challenge of writing complex ideas in an accessible way. She also likes to draw, paint, and collage. In addition to writing children's books, Kim is the owner of Velocity Ink, LLC, a consulting firm that provides grant writing and strategic planning services to progressive nonprofit organizations. A very successful grant writer, she's also the author of the workbook "Fix It and Get Funded: 10 Do-It-Yourself Repairs for Grant Proposals.” To see more of Kim's work, you can visit her website kimberlytso.com, or follow her on Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, or subscribe to her Substack newsletter. About a month ago I spoke at Dappcon about Solidarity Primitives we've been building at Bread Cooperative. Before my talk, Naomi Oba gave her own wonderful presentation titled Crypto Culture and its Discontents that unknowingly set the stage quite well for mine so I had to ask her on the podcast. We discussed the issues with crypto culture including obsession with quantification and financialization, and how to feel emotions instead. Naomi also helped write the Sapphire Punk manifesto, an exploration of a post-cypherpunk politics that reject the extreme individualism rooted in the original cypherpunk movement."All that is solid turns into data points." - Engels probably if he was still aroundThis is also the first episode that is sponsored by NYM, the world's most private VPN. Just a few years ago, historian and activist Dr. Ibram X. Kendi seemed to be everywhere. At the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, Kendi became one of the leading voices on racism in America—and particularly what he described as antiracism. But over the last few years, as a backlash grew against the BLM movement, Kendi also came under attack. His ideas urging people to be actively antiracist were often the target of conservative critics fighting against DEI policies and the teaching of critical race theory. Kendi was also accused of mismanaging an antiracism center at Boston University, which laid off much of its staff before closing last month (BU cleared Kendi of financial mismanagement.) On this week's More To The Story, Kendi responds to the criticism he faced at BU, argues that the Trump administration's policies are harming both white and Black Americans, and discusses Malcolm Lives!, his new book for young readers about Malcolm X.Producer: Josh Sanburn with help from Zulema Cobb and Julia Haney | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Deputy Executive Producer: Taki Telonidis | Executive producer: Brett Myers | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Listen: Black in the Sunshine State (Reveal)Read: I'm Racist. BE A BETTER SHOOTER with these insights from NSCA Level 3 instructor and bird hunter Dave Fiedler. My friend Dave has a different take on becoming a better shooter ... simplify, shed a bad habit (or maybe two), and soon you'll be yelling "Fetch!" Dave will take us through a lesson just as he teaches at Mid Valley Clays & Shooting School with an emphasis on hunting, not target shooting. You can take his tips into the garage and the range, then the field, from practice to practical. In the second half, we cover gun fit for us regular folk who aren't buying a bespoke English shotgun ... simple things we can do to ensure our eye, cheek and shoulder are working together. Then we fix some of the common in-field goofs we make with our feet-eyes-hands-shoulder-gun. "Fix It" squares away your mobile mapping app; and listeners share their horror stories when I requested their worst Friday the 13th bad luck. And it's all brought to you by: HiVizSights.com, RuffLand Kennels, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Pointer shotguns, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.

Ep 277 Why VAs Fail (And How to Fix It) with Barbara Turley If your A-players are bogged down in busywork—or worse, you're the bottleneck—then this episode is your wake-up call. The true cost of bad delegation isn't just time—it's lost momentum, missed profit, and mental burnout. Why Your Team's Wasting Time (And Bleeding Profit) Most business owners know they're leaving money on the table—but they don't realize just how much it's costing them. The real profit leak? It's not your marketing. It's not your pricing. It's your people strategy—or more accurately, your lack of one. When your A-players spend half their day buried in tasks a trained assistant could do, you're not just wasting time. You're eroding profit, burning out staff, and stunting growth. In this eye-opening episode, Barbara Turley exposes the hidden cost of messy operations, bad delegation, and hiring without process—and offers a blueprint to fix it. In This Episode, You'll Learn: The #1 reason delegation fails (hint: it's not your VA). How to build systems that free your best talent to focus on growth. Why your P&L doesn't show your biggest profit leak. The profit-first approach to optimizing human capital. What scalable delegation really looks like in a 350-person company. Key Takeaways (A.K.A. Expensive Blind Spots): Hiring a VA without systems is like putting a race car driver in a junkyard car. Most businesses bleed profit by forcing A-players to do admin work. Bad delegation isn't about bad people—it's about bad process. High growth with low structure = burnout, churn, and cash chaos. Without an operational foundation, strategy is worthless. Meet Barbara Turley: Barbara Turley is the Founder & CEO of The Virtual Hub, a 350-person global VA firm that's helped over 200 founders escape the weeds and scale smarter. With a background in equity trading and financial strategy, Barbara brings a sharp operational lens to business growth. Her company boasts a 95% Net Promoter Score, a 4.8-star client rating, and a track record of 50% year-over-year growth. She's the systems whisperer behind countless business transformations—and a fierce advocate for optimized human capital. In 2014, Nick Hanauer sounded the alarm: if economic inequality kept growing, the pitchforks would come—for him, and for the rest of America's wealthy elite. Then 2016 happened. Donald Trump was elected president on a wave of economic populism that correctly identified massive inequality as a problem, but which offered all the wrong solutions. The inaugural episode of Pitchfork Economics lays the groundwork for everything that followed. We revisit the urgent warning that launched the show, explore the deep myths that still shape our economy, and explain why telling a better story about how the economy works is the first step toward building one that works for everyone. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series—essential listening for anyone ready to ditch trickle-down and think middle-out. Ganesh Sitaraman is a law professor at Vanderbilt University and a leading expert on constitutional law, economic inequality, and political economy. He's the author of several influential books, including The Crisis of the Middle-Class Constitution, The Great Democracy, and Why Flying Is Miserable and How to Fix It. Sitaraman has served as a policy advisor to Senator Elizabeth Warren and co-founded the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator. Walter Scheidel is a historian at Stanford University whose work explores inequality, economic history, and the rise and fall of civilizations. He's best known for his acclaimed book The Great Leveler, which argues that throughout history, extreme inequality has only been reduced through violent shocks like war, revolution, or plague.
