It's Gay Pride (in America)! To commemorate iconic homosexual musician George Michael in the week of what would have been his 62nd birthday, and for our fifth annual Pride episode in the last week of Pride MONTH, Matt takes a look at the enduring cultural impact of George Michael's song Father Figure, and the idea that, as eminent American producer, Dick Clark once put it “Music is the soundtrack of your life.” And from there, Matt talks about how George Michael's music helped him as a small boy to re-discover the fun of pop music, and maybe even life, after the sudden death of his father. It's an episode about a whole lot of things, it runs a slim, almost 27 minutes (a commute!), and it includes Liza Minnelli, Stephen Sondheim, and The Pet Shop Boys in a small but reassuring way.Subscribe to our substack hereFollow us on Instagram hereFollow Matt Phillp hereFollow Erin Hosier hereFollow Elizabeth Thompson here This is a public episode. Little Richard was rock ‘n' roll's flamboyant architect. Lesley Gore sang that no one owned her. Sylvester was a gender-fluid icon who helped define disco. Freddie Mercury made rock operatic, and George Michael demanded freedom. What all of these LGBTQ artists had in common was bold hitmaking—and fear of being fully out of the closet. For decades, queer acts topped the charts while cloaking their true identities and paving the way for today's more openly queer stars. For Pride Month, join Chris Molanphy as he traces the hidden history of queer hitmakers on the charts—including those that managed to be both out and No. 1, right up through our modern age of Lil Nas X and Chappell Roan. It's a celebration of these artists' quest to feel… mighty real. Get more Hit Parade with Slate Plus! 'Gone', el tema que abre el nuevo disco de HAIM, incluye un sample evidente y algo precipitado de 'Freedom!' de George Michael. Porque 'I Quit', más que un álbum de ruptura, es en realidad el disco de la libertad para el trío de hermanas y una oportunidad de reinvención creativa. As What Next celebrates Juneteenth, please enjoy this episode from our colleagues at Hit Parade. What Next will be back in your feed on Monday. Want more Hit Parade? Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 9ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 tháinig an nuacht amach go bheir an airm agus na gardaí ar drong a ghoid 400 mhíle punt ó veain I Luimneach agus beir siad orthu ó eangach. I 2000 tháinig sé amach go raibh rátaí iasacht tithíochta ag dul suas ach go mbeadh an praghas de thí ag laghdú don chéad uair I 5 bhliain. I 2001 chuaigh an fhoireann iománaíocht Tiobraid Árann chuig cluiche ceannais na Mumhan agus bhuaigh siad I gcoinne an Chláir le pointe amháin. Ghortaíodh John Leahy I rith an chluiche agus ní raibh siad cinnte ag an am an mbeadh sé chun imir arís an bhliain sin. I 2010 d'oscail bóthair nua san Aonach Urmhumhan in ainneoin na rudaí a dúirt na daoine a raibh ina chónaí ann. Ainmnithe Ormond Keep Road, bhí sé ag dul idir cúpla eastát tithíochta agus bhí sé páirteach den phlean nua a bhí ag comhairle baile an tAonach Urmhumhan. Sin Jason Donovan le Sealed With A Kiss – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1989. I 2007 bhí George Michael an chéad duine chun ceolchoirm a bheith acu ag an stad nua Wembley I Londain agus bhí dhá cheolchoirm aige ar a turas 25 Live Tour. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Michael J Fox I gCeanada I 1961 agus rugadh aisteoir Johnny Depp I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1963 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 9th of June, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1978: An armed gang who got away with £400,000 from a security van in west Limerick slipped through the huge army and garda dragnet combing 3 counties for them. 2000: home loan rates were going up but housing prices were starting to fall for the first time in 5 years. 2001 – Tipperary Senior Hurlers reached a Munster Final, they won over Clare by a single point. It came at a cost with John Leahy taken off injured and a chance of missing the final was a possibility. 2010 - A much-debated new road opened in Nenagh despite continued opposition from local residents. Dubbed the ‘Ormond Keep Road,' the new route travels between several housing estates and forms part of a plan conceived by Nenagh Town Council. That was Jason Donovan with Sealed With A Kiss – the biggest song on this day in 1989 Onto music news on this day In 1990 Wilson Phillips went to No.1 on the US with 'Hold On'. 25 years earlier to the day Wendy and Carnies father Beach Boy Brian Wilson had been at No.1 with 'Help Me Rhonda'. 2007 George Michael became the first music artist to perform at the new Wembley Stadium in London when he played the first of two shows at the venue during his '25 Live Tour'. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 2ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 sheol an Aire Sláinte Charles Haughey scéim ar leith chun cabhrú le daoine óga sna cathracha a raibh riosca orthu damáiste a dhéanamh dá shaol. I 2000 bhí na hairí ón thuaidh faoi ionsaí ó na n-antoisceach ó dhá thaobh. I 1998 maraíodh 15 eallach ar fheirm I Toomevara de bharr go raibh toirneach agus tintreach ann. Bhí na heallaí ar foscadh faoi chrann seiceamar nuair a bhí sé ag cur báistí go trom agus thit an crann orthu. I 2006 bhí rangú san Aonach Urmhumhan sa tábla IBAL go hiontach mar chuaigh siad ó 'go leor bruscar' go 'níl aon bhruscar ann'. Chuaigh siad ó 51ú háit chuig 13ú háit. Sin Sonique le It Feels So Good – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2000 Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1973 chuaigh Paul McCartney chuig uimhir a haon I Meiriceá lena albam Red Rose Speedway agus fuair sé uimhir a haon lena hamhrán My Love agus d'fhan sé ann ar feadh ceithre seachtaine. I 1984 fuair Wham! A chéad uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain lena amhrán Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. Scríobh George Michael an t-amhrán agus bhí sé páirteach den bhanna cheoil. An inspioráid don amhrán ná nuair a scríobh Andrew Ridgeley nóta dá thuismitheoirí ag rá 'wake me up before you go' agus scríobh sé 'up' dhá uair agus mar sin scríobh sé an teideal 'wake me up before you go go'. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Wentworth Miller sa Bhreatain I 1972 agus rugadh aisteoir Ethan Slater I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1992 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. The cattle were sheltering in a hill field under a sycamore tree from a heavy downpour of rain when the "act of God" occurred. 2006 -Nenagh's ranking in the national IBAL league made a dramatic improvement, rising from the categorization of ‘Litter Blackspot' to ‘Litter Free Status'. rising from 51st place out of 57 towns to 13th in the latest survey. That was Sonique with It Feels So Good – the biggest song on this day in 2000 Onto music news on this day In 1973 Paul McCartney had both the No.1 positions on the US charts when 'Red Rose Speedway', went to the top of the album chart and 'My Love', started a four week run as the No.1 single. 1984 Wham! had their first UK No.1 with 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.' Written and produced by George Michael, one half of the duo. Inspiration for the song was a scribbled note left by his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley for Andrew's parents, originally intended to read "wake me up before you go" but with "up" accidentally written twice, so Ridgeley wrote "go" twice on purpose. One of the worlds greatest George Michael tribute acts is on his way to Wellington and while Wellington Mornings' music man James Irwin is a fan of tribute acts, Nick certainly isn't. Are tribute acts good or a gimmick? James also takes a look at the albums turning 25 this year, and upcoming gigs in the capital. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor Wentworth Miller was born in the UK in 1972 and actor Ethan Slater was born in America on this day in 1992 and this is some of the stuff he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.
Clare and Hannah both share a song that rocked their world. Hannah tries to rap (sort of), and Clare tells the story of the 10,000-pound haircut. Like the comments section of George Michael's "Careless Whisper," we hope you find this episode charmingly, wholesomely, vaguely off-color.The songs:“Change” by NF. “Careless Whisper” by Wham! featuring George Michael, 1984Sexy Sax ManSupport the showWe provide links and other resources to help you find and enjoy the things we talked about on this episode! David and Brad dissect Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin spectacle featuring an all-female crew of “astronauts” in form-fitting space suits and Katie Perry kissing the ground after an 11-minute joyride in an undeniably phallic spacecraft. Then comes the irony of New York Attorney General Letitia James—who pursued Trump on property valuation charges—now facing similar accusations of falsifying loan applications and listing her father as her husband. The episode wraps with the cautionary tale of Minot, North Dakota's mayor, whose personal 'rocket launch' video accidentally landed in his city attorney's inbox—proving once again that incompetence knows no political boundary. All this plus squirrel beheadings, Disney cruises, and George Michael appreciation.

Seven arrests in twelve years and more than a couple sleepless nights inside a London prison. This reads like the description of a stereotypical Sunset Strip metalhead, not that of pop prince George Michael. George's criminal transgressions include a bust for a “lewd act” in a public place, a crack addiction, numerous car crashes. George Michael was on a collision course with an early death, but he died of a broken heart. Along the way he made great music. Here's his story. Which early MTV icon is your favorite? Why?
