Cracking the Nazi Code: The Untold Story of Canada's Greatest Spy

The Institute of World Politics

About the Book: In public life, Dr. Winthrop Bell of Halifax was a Harvard philosophy professor and wealthy businessman. But as MI6 secret agent A12, he evaded gunfire and shook off pursuers to break open the emerging Nazi conspiracy in 1919 Berlin. His reports, the first warning of the Nazi plot for WWII, went directly to the man known as C, the mysterious founder of MI6. Throughout this, a powerful fascist politician quietly worked to suppress Bell's alerts. Nevertheless, agent A12's intelligence sabotaged the Nazis in ways that are only now being revealed. The Harvard philosophy instructor Winthrop Bell, aka British secret agent A12, was a star student of Edmund Husserl, the founder of modern German phenomenology. Bell was the first spy to fight the Nazis, in 1919, and the first to warn against their plans for the Holocaust, in 1939. His papers were held under classification for many years and were only recently declassified. They show how he dealt severe blows to the earliest Nazis, hindering them from taking over the world. How can this history help us to combat antisemitism today? About the Author: Jason Bell is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of New Brunswick in Canada. He has taught in the graduate program at the Higher Institute of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and at Mount Allison University in Canada. He has served at the University of Göttingen in Germany as Fulbright Professor, as scholar-in-residence at Boston University, as Research Fellow at the Husserl Archives-Leuven, and as d'Alzon Fellow at Assumption University. He was awarded the doctorate in philosophy at Vanderbilt University.

Duccio Locati joined us to talk about all things mindset. Specifically Duccio talked about how our subconscious mind plays a HUGE role in whether or not we're healthy. Have you ever wondered why seemingly healthy people come down with disease and sickness? How could a health nut come down with some kind of illness or cancer? Perhaps it has a lot to do with our subconscious mind. We talked a lot about reprogramming the subconscious mind on the show with Dr. Bruce Lipton quite some time back which you will want to hear. On top of learning how the subconscious mind affects our actions and attitudes we also talked about the unconscious mind and the super conscious mind. What people don't realize is that the belief systems, our attitudes and emotions (which directly affect our health and physiology) are controlled by our subconscious mind. Some people say it's has high as 80 to 90% of what we think about is subconscious programming. That's why people will get sick yet their conscious mind (which Duccio Locati says only runs the mind 5% of the time) doesn't want to be sick. Their body is following orders from the subconscious mind. It's a weird concept but our will power and logical mind is run by the conscious mind. What we really want to do is to get rid of negative, dis-empowering thought patterns from our subconscious mind. Since the subconscious brain controls up to 95% of our brain, we should place most of the emphasis there instead of trying to increase will power. Duccio Locati works with something called PSYCh-K. It's an entire system that's designed to help people get rid of limiting beliefs and reprogram your subconscious mind. Reprogramming your subconscious brain isn't just applied to health and healing, it can be applied to self esteem, success principles, earning more money, improving relationships and so much more. It's our subconscious brain that's causing all the issues in our lives whether they be physical, spiritual or emotional. I hope you enjoyed this show with Mr. Duccio Locati. Visit his site below! Conflict research as a subject area has often been prone to colonial mindsets and thinking. In a world in which power disparities between wealthy states and the former colonial world remain very large - indeed, often huge - there are significant structural imbalances of power between the the North and South. These are reflected in the resources available to the academic community. Privilege can often create regressive attitudes and mindsets, which reinforce and reproduce these power disparities. In this episode, we introduce the Silent Voices Bukavu Project, a collaborative research project, based on the sharing of experiences and creation of dialogue, which has created an intellectual and cultural resource for the global academy. The project seeks to identify and share problems in order to promote and encourage collaborative best practices.  Featuring professor Koen Vlassenroot, Director of the Conflict Research Group at Ghent University, Emery Mudinga, the Director of Angaza Institute and Associate Professor at Higher Institute for Rural Development, Bukavu, and Irène Bahati, a Congolese researcher at the Study Group on Conflict and Human Security and Teacher at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Bukavu. Producers: Luke Cooper, Azaria MorganSound editor: Camilo Tirado Intro music: The Drama by Rafael Krux (used for education purposes under Creative Commons License).   This podcast series has been funded by the UK government’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) as part of the LSE Conflict Research Programme. Prof Marcora is well known in the world of sports science and considered an expert in this subject. He has a Bachelor in Physical Education from the Higher Institute of Physical Education of Lombardy (Italy). A MSc in Human Performance at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (USA), and a PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Wales-Bangor (UK). He has taught at the Bangor University (UK) and the University of Kent (UK) , where he was made an honorary Professor. Prof Marcora's research integrates exercise physiology with motivation psychology and cognitive neuroscience to better understand fatigue, endurance performance and physical activity behaviour. He is the author of Sport and the Brain: The science of preparing, enduring and winning, and has over 185 scientific articles, being cited over 10,000 times. He has been a consultant for many organisations including British Ministry of Defence, Juventus, MAPEI Sport and ASICS, and in 2018 he began his post at the University of Bologna, where he teaches applied physiology and training methodology. What we cover in depth How the brain regulates performance What is the difference between pain and fatigue How his model differs from the classic understanding of fatigue, e.g central governor theory What’s going on ‘inside’ when we are racing at the limit and we ‘hear’ the voice inside saying counter productive messages Recommendations for masters rowers to prepare to do their best in a maximum test/race Interventions to maintain/increase performance when feeling fatigued How would you incorporate the application and training plan design How to integrate brain endurance training with traditional training sessions Advice to masters rowers looking to integrate this... a lot of science How brain endurance ties into recovery strategy, role of sleep and the role of meditation The most effective primers to ward off fatigue Recommended visual and audible cues Fatigue mediation/mitigation strategies, any good stories from power/endurance sports? Burkina Faso, a rather arid country in western Africa, began to build water reservoirs 150 years ago. Today there are about 1500 of these reservoirs ranging in size from small to very large ponds. Dr. Raymond Ouedraogo knows a lot of them. Since the 1980s he has been a multi-faceted expert in fisheries, aquaculture and water management. After graduating from the Higher Institute for Fisheries Sciences and Techniques, he began his career in the Ministry of Environment and Fish Resources in Burkina Faso. He has remained in touch with BOKU beyond his doctorate, and today he is the regional coordinator of the SUSFISH-plus project. This project is a collaboration between BOKU and, among others, the National Center for Scientific and Technological Research in Burkina Faso, where Raymond currently pursues his research. Already in the project preceding this one – SUSFISH – he was an important member of the team.In this podcast, Raymond Ouedraogo talks about land and water in Burkina Faso, the different uses of water reservoirs, and how he works in the middle of politics and science to develop the maximum benefits of research for the people and the land.

In this podcast Mufti Taha Karaan will explain how do Muslim minority communities in various parts of the world create meaningful spaces and environments to flourish as religious communities, and as beneficial members of their societies? The intersection between religious identity and citizenship is a nuanced and complex topic for many Muslims living in Non Muslims countries. Mufti Taha Karaan provides an insightful overview of how Muslim minority communities engaged with the geo political realities of their times in order to consolidate their presence and growth in various locations around the world.  By analyzing and discussing the critical topics of migration, citizenship and the preservation of faith, in a coherent historical chronology and context, Mufti Taha Karaan proffers a refreshing and inspirational approach of understanding the Fiqh of Citizenship and Minorities in contemporary times. The Muslim community of South Africa, specifically Cape Town, has a rich and dynamic history which spans more than 300 years. Mufti Taha Karaan proposes that Muslim minority communities around the world should scrupulously analyse how the Muslims of the Cape preserved their faith when confronted with the various challenges of slavery, colonialism and apartheid, and how they succeeded in developing into a vibrant, confident and socially contributing community within South African society. Biography of Mufti Taha Karaan: Mufti Taha Karaan is a Shafi'i scholar born in Cape Town, South Africa, to a family renowned in both its maternal and paternal lineage for Islamic scholarship. His father, the late Mufti Yusuf Karaan (may Allah have mercy on his soul), was one of the most distinguished Islamic scholars in the Cape. Mufti Taha completed his Qur'anic memorization in one year at the Waterfall Islamic Institute, the oldest Islamic seminary in South Africa. During his stay, he assisted in the editing of the Qur'anic prints that the Institute has become famous for the world over. After finishing four years of the ‘alim course in two years, he journeyed to the Indian sub-continent and Dar al-Uloom Deoband, graduating from there in 1991 with the highest of distinctions, as did his father, in a class of over 700 students. He then travelled to the Middle East and completed a two-year graduate diploma at the Higher Institute for Islamic Studies in Cairo, Egypt. Mufti Taha is the recipient of numerous chains of transmission (ijazaat), from well-respected scholars in India, Pakistan, South Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, among others, in numerous fields of Islamic study. Currently, Mufti Taha is the Mufti of the Muslim Judicial Council. He is a sought-after speaker at Islamic symposia and conferences but attends them sparingly, preferring to spend most of his time at the Islamic seminary, Dar al-Uloom al-Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah, that he founded in 1996. The educational thrust of the seminary reflects Mufti Taha's own pioneering vision and commitment to squarely interface with the challenges of the modern age through the twin objectives of preservation and progress. In his teaching, writing and legal verdicts (fatawa), Mufti Taha regularly addresses contemporary issues such as the challenges of post-modernity, feminism, Islamic economics and finance, the old and new Orientalisms, and fiqh issues affecting Diaspora Muslim communities. His students describe him as divinely-gifted with encyclopaedic knowledge; possessed of a near photographic memory; an insatiable bibliophile within the Islamic sciences and without; a teacher that never ceases to inspire; endowed with an elegant calligraphic hand and a penchant for poetry; thoroughly unassuming, pleasant, brilliant and tender-hearted. Since the enlightenment period, belief in God and organized religion has come under significant attack.  The unremitting question regarding the compatibility of revelation and reason continues to plague us in current times.  Atheism as a “belief” system or worldview is on the rise, and many individuals feel obfuscated and confused amidst the high levels of intellectual scepticism. How should Muslims face and immunized themselves from these ideological challenges? How did our luminous scholars of the past respond to the various intellectual and doctrinal quagmires of their age so that they were able to preserve sound belief in the integrals of Islam? In this lecture, Mufti Taha Karaan succinctly articulates a systematic overview of the various components that contribute to the Islamic science of belief ('aqeeda) and dialectical theology (kalam). By contextualizing the various challenges that historically confronted Islamic doctrine, he provides a lucid methodology in comprehending the integral epistemic avenues that contribute to correct belief in Islam. This is Haji’s first main role in a feature film. The film’s soundtrack also includes music performed by Haji on saz, a traditional stringed instrument. Synopsis The film consists of two stories that by chance intersect at the forty-minute mark. The first one is about Khaled, a young Syrian refugee who has lost virtually all of his family. Almost by accident, he drifts to Helsinki as a stowaway passenger on a collier to seek asylum without great hopes for his future life. Wikström, the other protagonist, is a travelling salesman of about fifty (representing mainly men’s shirts and ties). In the beginning of the film he leaves his alcoholic wife and his profession and turns momentarily into a poker shark. With the small amount of money he thus gains he then buys an unprofitable restaurant at the far end of an inner court along a back street in Helsinki. When the authorities decide to return Khaled to the ruins of Aleppo he, just like many others, decides to stay illegally in the country and disappears into the streets of Helsinki. There he meets, besides various types of racism, also pure kindness. Finally Wikström finds our fellow sleeping in the inner yard of his restaurant. Perhaps he sees something of himself in the battered man because he hires Khaled as a cleaner and a dishwasher. For a moment life shows us its sunnier side, but fate soon intervenes and the film concludes with an open ending leading either to a respectable life or to the cemetery. For a person driven into a corner, both have their merits. Båda upplevde a point of no return i sina urprungsländer. Musiklista:Bashar Sharifa - Nahawand Tarabband - Baghdad Choby Dunia - Roaming Maher Mahmoud - Twilight Maher Mahmoud - Mirage Dunia - Roaming Dunia - Laugh Maher Mahmoud M Fl - Damascus, One More Aspect Shadi Ali Maher Mahmoud - Ya Mashghool Tarabband - Ashofak Baden Tarabband; Nadin Al Khalidi, Sång, Saz, Mandole, Gabriel Hermansson, Gitarr, Mandole, Kör, Filip Runesson, Fiol, Romain Coutama, Elbas, Fredrik Gille, Slagverk, Kör, Valter Kinbom, Slagverk, Kör. - Heli Tarabband; Nadin Al Khalidi, Sång, Saz, Mandole, Gabriel Hermansson, Gitarr, Mandole, Kör, Filip Runesson, Fiol, Romain Coutama, Elbas, Fredrik Gille, Slagverk, Kör, Valter Kinbom, Slagverk, Kör. - Heli Tarabband; Nadin Al Khalidi, Sång, Saz, Mandole, Gabriel Hermansson, Gitarr, Mandole, Kör, Filip Runesson, Fiol, Romain Coutama, Elbas, Fredrik Gille, Slagverk, Kör, Valter Kinbom, Slagverk, Kör. - Rassina Tarabband; Nadin Al Khalidi, Sång, Saz, Mandole, Gabriel Hermansson, Gitarr, Mandole, Kör, Filip Runesson, Fiol, Romain Coutama, Elbas, Fredrik Gille, Slagverk, Kör, Valter Kinbom, Slagverk, Kör. - Rassina Amar Chaoul, Nadin Al Khalidi, Filip Runesson, Gabriel Hermansson, Romain Coutama, Tarabband, Valter Kinbom - Salam Alekum Kompositör: Romain Coutama Bolag: KAP SYD
