"This is how we stitch the world together." I hope you've got a cup of tea with you, because you're going to want to settle in for this BEAUTIFUL conversation. Have you ever experienced a deep longing to connect more deeply to your dog, to the natural world, to the cosmos? Well, you are going to LOVE this episode. My guest today is Dr Saskia von Diest. Saskia earned a PhD in plant pathology, and has a background in postdoctoral research on how intuitive interspecies communication is used in agriculture. Since then, Saskia has pursued her passion for supporting others in having their experience of communicating with non-human Nature, and develop that both for their own benefit, and for the collective benefit. She has been communicating with various forms of Nature for 11 years, and with 15 years' experience in teaching and facilitating in various countries, Saskia loves creating opportunities for individuals and groups to connect and communicate with Nature's healing power and practical wisdom. She's also trained in Family Constellations and in the Way of the Warrior Healer. Saskia founded Ecofluency in 2021, to consult, teach, and facilitate Nature communication experiences, for individuals, groups and organisations, and to promote other voices in this field. In this conversation today, Saskia and I talk about how Ecofluency developed, and we do a deep dive into what it means to connect and communicate with all of life, all of consciousness, and why this is so needed in today's world. Spoiler alert: Not only can YOU communicate directly with nature, but you are ALREADY doing it!! Saskia shares her own story of how entering into Nature communication helped her heal a deep sense of loneliness. She also talks about a communication session where a client's dog who was crossing the rainbow bridge helped to reframe and shed more light on the spiritual roles that humans and dogs are playing for one another. Saskia also shares a surprising message from the land to a client who wanted to protect it. And she provides us with some really easy tips for starting your own nature communication journey today with your own dog. This is one of those conversations that will remind you of just how important your personal thread is to this whole tapestry of life, and leave you changed. If you would like to work with Saskia, starting May 6th 2024, she is running a 6-week online course that is designed for all experience levels. For more information, visit Saskia's website, https://ecofluency.org, where you can find out more about her offerings, including this course and a Summer Solstice workshop she will be holding in the UK. If you'd like to enter to be considered for the opportunity to win a free animal communication session with me for your pet, all you have to do is rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, take a screenshot of your review, and send it to me on Instagram @mysticdogmama. Birthdays can be emotionally tumultuous, but when approached with intentionality, they can be opportunities for growth. As my birthday approaches, I like to spend the month or so leading up to that date doing a life inventory - I call this the birthday portal. I turn inward and review what habits or patterns I need to get go of or call in. What I need to forgive others or myself. What wild dreams or desires I want to embrace for the coming year. In my birthday portal reflections this year, I came across a list I wrote to myself on my last birthday - 37 thoughts I'd like to share with you. Today's episode has a lot to unpack and some of it may not resonate with you. As always, I hope you find some hidden gems that speak to you, that move you, that guide you on your journey of healing and self-liberation. I've never viewed growing older as something to dread. Instead, I see it as an opportunity to grow further into our wisdom, power, and wholeness. Join me in today's episode as I unpack what I've learned this past year and share a special opportunity that just might be what you've been waiting for. Listen to episode 361 now! In episode 361 of the Embodied Podcast we discuss: [2:19] What a birthday portal is and how Elizabeth likes to commemorate it [8:23] Why we should be aware of the anger and grief we take forward with us and the need to process it [13:08] How Elizabeth has been focusing on being an instrument of healing and not the force itself [16:31] The importance of communicating what we have the energy for with others and with ourselves [26:28] Why the yawns didn't get edited out of this episode :) [35:42] A perspective on emotional eating that honors your body and soul's needs [41:02] Why we are allowed self-love and how it is necessary and holy [43:09] What it means to pay attention to reciprocity and energy flow in our relationships [53:18] How Nature is our best teacher and giver of wisdom on how to allow things in our lives [58:26] The details on the newly updated Professional Embodiment Specialist Certification Training For full show notes and resources, head tohttps://untameyourself.com/podcasts/361 About the EMBODIED Podcast with Elizabeth DiAlto Since 2013 I've been developing a body of work that helps women embody self love, healing and wholeness. We do this by focusing on the four levels of consciousness - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. In practical terms this looks like exploring tools and practices to help you tune into the deep wisdom of the body and the knowing of the heart, which I believe are gateways to our souls. Then we cultivate a new relationship with our minds that allows the mind to serve this wisdom and knowing and soul connection, rather than override it, which is what many of us were taught. If you've been doing self help or spiritual development work for a while, these are the types of foundational things that often people overlook in pursuit of fancier concepts that often aren't practical or sustainable. Here, we will focus on building these strong foundations so you can honestly and thoroughly embody self love. If you're feeling it, subscribe to the show, and leave us a review wherever you listen from. You can also keep up with show updates and community discussion on Instagram here.

Dr. Mario Luis Small grew up in Panama City, the son of an architect in a tight knit community of other families. He learned first-hand the way that spaces and social connections shape well-being and community. In this episode of Shared Space, I talk with Mario, Grafstein Family Professor in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University, about how his early experiences shaped his future work and his discovery around the importance of social capital, trust and social ties in strengthening communities across the globe, and specifically the nature of architecture and urban design to shape connection. Dr. Small has published award-winning articles, edited volumes, and books on topics such as social relationships, urban poverty, and the relationship between qualitative and quantitative methods. He has amazing books, from Villa Victoria to Unanticipated Gains, to his latest book, Someone To Talk To: How Networks Matter in Practice. In this episode, we discuss... Mental fortitude is the ability to focus and find solutions amid adversity. It's being able to get back up when you fall. As entrepreneurs, we hear about this all the time, but it's often easier said than done. Whenever we face challenges, we have two options: fight or flight. At that moment, we need to make a choice. Will you take ownership of the situation and keep going? In this episode, Lisa Tamati joins us to talk about how her personal life and business challenges built her grit and determination. She shares several business secrets to take your work to the next level. Mental fortitude is not just about your attitude towards challenges; it's also how you deal with your daily life routine. Lisa shares some healthy habits we need to incorporate into our lives. If you want to be inspired to build mental fortitude, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn how to build mental fortitude through consistent action. Discover how you can actively take ownership of your life and decisions. Understand how to create healthy habits and routines in your daily life. Resources If you want to optimize your health and fitness, check out Lisa's epigenetics program. To find out more about how Lisa and her mother defied the odds, get your copy of Relentless. Follow Lisa on her website and Peak Wellness. For more information about health optimization, you can follow Lisa's podcast, Pushing the Limits. You may also tune in on Apple Podcasts. You can contact Lisa through email (support@lisatamati.com) or find her on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Episode Highlights Building Mental Fortitude over Time Lisa learned discipline at a young age through her father and gymnastics. Gymnastics taught Lisa how to work hard, overcome fears, and perform in high-stress situations. Lisa shares that wanting to please her father and prove herself capable was a big driving force in her actions. Take Action When we make mistakes and stumble, we get back up again. As we keep taking action, we might fail, but there's a chance for success too. Lisa shares how she did a little bit of everything. Although she wasn't qualified in the usual sense to do the work, she finds ways to do them anyway. Overcome Challenges and Obstacles Lisa shares the hardest challenge she ever had to face was almost losing her mother to an aneurysm. They told her to expect the worst, but Lisa refused to accept it. She read up on everything she could about brain injuries and aneurysms to help her mother. Listen to the full episode to hear Lisa's story! How to Take Ownership Lisa notes how doctors have limitations. Some work long shifts and have hundreds of patients per day. We need to do the work and have due diligence. Obsessively researching helped Lisa get her mother back to good health. Take ownership of the situation and get into the details of your problems. Lisa's Business Secrets Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is essential. Knowing them means you find the right partners and people to cover your weaknesses. Quit when an idea isn't working anymore is crucial. It can be tempting but don't keep holding on to it. Time management means more energy throughout the day. Knowing what you need to focus on saves energy. Building a Healthy Habit Through epigenetics, Lisa knows when the optimal time is for exercise, intellectual work, and resting. It's common for people to say entrepreneurs need to work harder, working over 18 hours a day. This kind of attitude is dangerous and leads to health issues and sleep deprivation. Resting can be just as productive as work. Understand that if you're not stressed all the time, you can be more productive in half the amount of time. How Nature and Nurture Helps Us Genetics doesn't spell our destiny. It just guides us on what we have to watch out for. Once we know what we're susceptible to, we can build a routine to optimize our health. You can influence how your genes express through the actions you take and the environment you put yourself into. Through epigenetics, you can learn about what you can eat and what you should avoid, when and what you should exercise, and more! Learn more about personalizing your routines in the full episode! Accepting Yourself and Your Body Often, our goals focus on the way we look and how we perform in specific sports. We need to understand and accept that our bodies are different, and it's a reality that some sports just aren't for us. Being different isn't bad. It means we have different roles to play. Pushing your limits, in your way, helps you learn more about yourself. Becoming stronger means facing challenges head-on. Lisa's Advice on Building Mental Fortitude Remember, we're more capable than we think. Live your life and keep working towards your big goals. Don't forget to rest. Recovery is an important part of working hard too! 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “Having that mentality of just ‘go, go, go' and take action, and [when you] fail and get back up again: learn from that mistake. And that resilience, I think that comes from that because you do fall on your face sometimes; and other times, you're hugely successful.” “You have to be the one that goes and does the work, does the research, and not feel as if you don't have the right to do that because we live in a day and age where we can access the greatest minds on the planet.” “So many people are just written off as: you've got a terminal illness, you've got cancer or you whatever the case may be, and there's no hope for you. When that is not true.” “I used to work up until 12, 1 o'clock in the morning. I don't anymore because it's a false economy, you think you are getting more done by being an absolute hard entrepreneur working 18 hours a day, all that does is lead to health issues and problems and sleep deprivation.” “So genetics is not your destiny - it depends on which genes are turned on and off, how they will really express and this is when your environment comes into it. So if you have a combination of knowing what your genetics are, and knowing how to optimize them, and avoid trial and error, then you'll be able to do the best with what you've got.” About Lisa Lisa Tamati is one of New Zealand's well-known ultramarathon runners. With over 25 years of experience as an ultra-endurance athlete, Lisa has competed in the world's most challenging endurance events. She has also led and participated in various expeditions in locations like the Gobi Desert, the Sahara Desert, and the Himalayas. Inspired by her experiences, Lisa has written about her running journey in Running Hot and Running to Extremes. Her latest book, Relentless, recounts how she and her mother defied the odds. The book is a personal look at Lisa's mental fortitude and how she did everything to save her mother from the brink of death. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week we’re going to learn about carnivorous sponges, which is a suggestion from Lorenzo. When I got Lorenzo’s email, I thought “oh, neat” and added carnivorous sponges to the giant, complicated list I keep of topic suggestions from listeners and my Aunt Janice, and also animals I want to learn more about. When I noticed carnivorous sponges on the list the other day, I thought, “Wait, sponges are filter feeders. Are there even any carnivorous ones?” The answer is yes! Most sponges are filter feeders, sure, but there’s a family of sponges that are actually carnivorous. Caldorhizidae is the family, and it’s made up of deep-sea sponges that have only been discovered recently. We know there are lots more species out there because scientists have seen them during deep-sea rover expeditions without being able to study them closely. We talked about sponges way back in episode 41, with some mentions of them in episodes 64 and 168 too, but only the filter feeder kind. Let’s first learn how a filter feeder sponge eats, specifically members of the class Demosponge, since that’s the class that the family Caldorhizidae belongs to. Sponges have been around for more than half a billion years, since the Cambrian period and possibly before, and they’re still going strong. Early on, sponges evolved a simple but effective body plan and just stuck to it. Of course there are lots and lots and lots of different species with different shapes and sizes, but they almost all work the same way. Most have a skeleton, but not the kind of skeleton that you think of as an actual skeleton. They don’t have bones. The skeleton is usually made of calcium carbonate and forms a sort of dense net that’s covered with soft body tissues. The tissues are often further strengthened with small pointy structures called spicules. If you’ve ever played a game called jacks, where you bounce a ball and pick up little metal pieces between each bounce, spicules sort of resemble jacks. The sponge has lots of open pores in the outside of its body, which generally just resembles a sack or sometimes a tube. One end of the sack is attached to the bottom of the ocean, or a rock or something. The pores are lined with cells that each have a teensy structure called a flagellum, which is sort of like a tiny tail. The sponge pumps water through the pores by beating those flagella. Water flows into the sponge’s tissues, which are made up of lots of tiny connected chambers. Cells in the walls of these chambers filter out particles of food from the water, much of it microscopic, and release any waste material. The sponge doesn’t have a stomach or any kind of digestive tract, though. The cells process the food individually and pass on any extra nutrients to adjoining cells. Obviously, this body plan is really effective for filter feeding, not so effective for chasing and killing small animals to eat. The sponge you may have in your kitchen is probably synthetic or manufactured from a sponge gourd, not an actual bath sponge animal, but it’s arranged the same way. Go look at that sponge, or just imagine it, and then compare it mentally to, say, a tiger.

Cara Wilde is back on the podcast, and she's joining me for a co-hosted episode! Cara has been a guest on the show twice before, on episodes 13 and 116, but you've probably heard me talk about her many times, as I tend to bring up her name whenever I mention channeling. Today, we talk about how to increase the joy in our lives through connecting with Nature. More About Cara Wilde Cara supports professional women who want to make a difference in the world but are feeling stalled in their authentic work and want to reclaim their Soul purpose with confidence. She helps healers, coaches and therapists at any stage of their professional lives who are looking to deepen their spiritual and professional development. Cara left her counselling and more mainstream work behind her when she couldn’t use her psychic abilities or work with guides and began to feel as though she was working blind. She set up her own business as an EFT practitioner, started to use her channeling and intuitive abilities and felt like she’d got the team on board and helped her clients in making more significant and longer lasting changes in their lives. As part of her work Cara channels a collective called The Ancients and offers practical guidance and support specific to the needs and concerns of those of us who are deeply sensitive and passionate about creating real change in the world. Cara passionately believes that those of us considered misfits are truly here to create a new way in the world and are part of the Divine’s blueprint for a Heaven on Earth. Cara lives in Cornwall, surrounded by the ocean and stone circles. She home educates her two children and when life gets too hectic, you can find her running the trails or curled up under a heavy blanket with a good book. You can find her at her website, on Facebook, or her YouTube channel. Jay Harman is a naturalist, author and award-winning entrepreneur and biomimetic inventor. Born and raised in Australia, Jay started his career as a naturalist with the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in Australia and went on to found several multi-million dollar research and manufacturing companies. Today, Jay talks to us about his book The Shark's Paintbrush: Biomimicry and How Nature is Inspiring Innovation. How did Jay discover that nature has the solution to all of our problems? Well, it first started when he was in school. He had no interest in the teaching materials and would often daydream about going down to the beach to surf, fish, and scuba dive. You could always find him near the water when he wasn’t in school. However, the one subject Jay did pay attention to was physics. The strange thing was, physics worked in a slightly different way in nature than it did in the classroom. Jay first realized this when he saw seaweed, often fragile, keep its shape during the worst of storms. It would always form in a certain pattern and this pattern would help it keep it intact and survive the rough weather. In school, Jay was taught that the path of least resistance was in a straight line. Well, in nature, nothing moves in a straight line! It became very apparent to Jay, but not to Jay’s physics teacher, that the path of least resistance in nature was a spiral. So, Jay began applying these spiral shapes in a practical way and slowly ended up discovering that nature, really, had all the answers. However, how does all of this apply to the business world? Well, you’ll have to listen in for more great insights from Jay and how he slowly discovered that answer. Aired: 11/4/13 Nature, imaginative by necessity, has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. They have found what works, what is appropriate, and most important, what lasts here on Earth. After 3.8 billion years of R&D on this planet, failures are fossils. What surrounds us in the natural world is what has succeeded and survived. So why not learn as much as we can from what works? Today's guest, JAY HARMON is doing just that, translating nature's lessons and models into technologies that solve problems and perform tasks more elegantly, efficiently, and economically. He's the author of THE SHARK'S PAINTBRUSH: Biomimicry and How Nature is Inspiring Innovation. I believe biomimicry - a way of looking and working and designing - has enormous potential to save us from ourselves. I find this one of the most exciting developments in the world at this time.
