At a time when digital content creators have become a major source of information for people, a UNESCO survey published Tuesday revealed that 62% do not carry out rigorous and systematic fact-checking of information before sharing it. But 73% express the wish to be trained to do so. UNESCO is launching this month the very first global course to address this, with more than 9,000 participants from 160 countries already registered to participate. "Digital content creators have acquired an important place in the information ecosystem, engaging millions of people with cultural, social or political news. But many are struggling in the face of disinformation and online hate speech and calling for more training. As part of its mandate for media and information literacy, UNESCO will support them through the first-ever global training course," said Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO's Director-General. The UNESCO "Behind the screens" survey is the first global analysis of digital content creators' motivations and practices, and of the challenges they face. It involved 500 influencers in 45 countries, with the expertise of a dedicated research team at Bowling Green State University (USA). As well as demonstrating that fact-checking is not the norm, the survey finds that content creators have difficulty with determining the best criteria for assessing the credibility of information they find online. 42% of respondents said they used "the number of 'likes' and 'shares' a post had received" on social media as the main indicator. 21% were happy to share content with their audiences if it had been shared with them "by friends they trusted", and 19% said they relied "on the reputation" of the original author or publisher of content. Journalists could be a valuable aid for digital content creators to verify the reliability of their information. However, links and cooperation are still rare between these two communities. Mainstream news media is only the third most common source (36.9%) for content creators, after their own experience and their own research and interviews. Lack of awareness of their rights and duties The survey also revealed that a majority of digital content creators (59%) were either unfamiliar with or had only heard of regulatory frameworks and international standards relating to digital communications. Only slightly more than half of the respondents (56.4%) are aware of training programmes addressed to them. And only 13.9% of those who are aware of these programmes participated in any of them. This gap can put digital content creators in legal uncertainty, exposing them to prosecution and conviction in some countries. It also prevents them from asserting their rights when they are themselves victims of restricted content online. For example, about a third (32.3%) of digital content creators reported being targeted by hate speech. But only 20.4% reported the case to the social media platform. The world's first training course built for and with influencers While 73% of respondents requested training, UNESCO and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas (USA) partnered to develop the first global month-long course. It aims to empower content creators to address disinformation and hate speech and provide them with a solid grounding in global human rights standards on both Freedom of Expression and Information. The content was produced by media and information literacy experts in close collaboration with leading influencers around the world to directly address the reality of situations experienced by digital content creators. The course just started and runs for 4 weeks; over 9,000 people from 160 countries enrolled and are currently taking it. They will learn how to: source information using a diverse range of sources, assess and verify the quality of information, be transparent about the sources that inspire their content, identify, debunk, and report misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, collaborate with journalists...
The content was written, produced and voiced by Google NotebookLM AI (https://notebooklm.google.com/). So, you are wondering if AI newsfluencers are welcome to attend too? The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas (https://knightcenter.utexas.edu/), in collaboration with UNESCO, is offering a free online course titled "Digital Content Creators and Journalists: How to be a Trusted Voice Online." (https://journalismcourses.org/journalism-meets-content-creators-join-our-free-course-to-become-a-trusted-voice-online/) This course aims to bridge the gap between traditional journalists and digital content creators by equipping them with the skills needed to produce ethical and trustworthy content in the digital age. The course will focus on building audience trust, navigating the ethical responsibilities of shaping public opinion, and creating compelling content during conflicts and crises, while also promoting media and information literacy. The course is offered in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish and will be led by experienced professionals in the field of social media storytelling and journalism. The course material is organized into five modules covering topics such as the evolving information landscape, ethical considerations in content creation, promoting media literacy, and the importance of verified information during crises.

“A regulação virá. O problema é o que virá. As diferentes forças vão aproveitar o momento para puxar para um mundo mais democrático, ou menos democrático“, diz Rosental.

A special welcome to those of you listening on OccupyProWrestling.com. If you want to bring our updates to your website...email us: desk@justprowrestlingnews.com. (STINGER: AEW) AEW is just weeks away from its first live touring since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It announced dates and locations for three upcoming Dynamites - the first to be held away from Jacksonville's Daily's Place in NINE months. Dynamite will be at Miami's James L. Knight Center on July 7th...followed by two Wednesdays in Texas - July 14th at the H-E-B Center near Austin...and July 21st at the Curtis Culwell Center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Tickets for all three shows go on sale Friday morning. AEW says it will comply with all local guidelines concerning COVID-19 safety - that includes seating capacities. AEW also announced a pair of rescheduled live events. First, in St. Louis on FRIDAY, November 5th. That's being called an “AEW TNT television taping”. Also, a live Dynamite in New Orleans on January 12, 2022! We'll get another look at former Lucha Underground Champion Marty Casaus on tonight's AEW Dark. He'll go one-on-one with Jungle Boy. Also tonight, Brian Cage vs. Bear Bronson. Plus, Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston will be in tag team action. On last night's Dark: Elevation...Moxley delivered a Paradigm Shift from the second rope to pin Danny Limelight. Dark Order's Alex Reynolds pinned Private Party's Isiah Kassidy with a rollup. After the match, Matt Hardy and Marq Quen helped Kassidy lay out Reynolds, John Silver and Colt Cabana. Also, Pro wrestling lawyer Mark Sterling pitched himself as the one to manage Jade Cargill, and she was at least willing to listen as she followed Sterling backstage. (STINGER: WWE) TWO title matches on tonight's NXT. Raquel Gonzalez defends her NXT Women's Title against Mercedes Martinez. Santos Escobar gets his rematch for Kushida's Cruiserweight Title. It's Two Out Of Three Falls. Plus, NXT Champ Karrion Kross in a non-title match against Austin Theory...and Killian Dane vs. Imperium's Alexander Wolfe. A new match added to WrestleMania Backlash - The Miz vs. Damien Priest in a Lumberjack Match. Damian Priest pinned John Morrison on last night's Raw...after The Miz's attempt to help Morrison backfired. The gave Priest the right to choose the stipulation for the Backlash match. Raw Women's Champ Rhea Ripley pinned Asuka last night in a non-title match...as Charlotte Flair looked on. Those women will be in a 3-Way for the title at Backlash. Charlotte and Asuka were also on opposite sides of a 6-Woman tag to open the show. It was brought to a screeching halt when Alexa Bliss suddenly appeared on-stage - riding her swing set...alongside Lilly. Bliss said she's keeping her eye on “someone”. The match resumed...but then, Shayna Baszler appeared to lose control of her legs. Asuka swooped in with a shining wizard to get the pin. Charlotte knocked out Asuka after the match. Alexa and Lilly chuckled as they looked on. End scene. An ugly ending to a match between Sheamus and Humberto Carrillo. Carrillo was delivering a sunset flip powerbomb from the apron to the arena floor, but Sheamus landed on Carrillo's left leg. The ref waved off the match and declared Sheamus the winner. A win for Carrillo would've earned him a shot at Sheamus' U.S. Title. The main event was a non-title match between WWE Champ Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre. But Braun Strowman interfered and power slammed BOTH men as the show ended. Jinder Mahal returned to Raw with a win over Jeff Hardy. Shelton Benjamin pinned Cedric Alexander with a T-Bone Suplex. Also, the team of R-K-Bro and Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston beat AJ Styles, Omos, Elias and Jaxson Ryker. Randy Orton pinned Elias with an RKO. After the match, Orton RKO'd Woods and Kingston. Riddle was befuddled. (STINGER: ROH) On this past weekend's Ring Of Honor TV, Angelina Love beat Quinn McKay, thanks to a timely distraction by Mandy Leon. EC3 & Flip Gordon beat The Briscoes. EC3 pinned Mark Briscoe after Gordon hit Mark with a chain. But EC3 never saw Flip's cheating. And Brian Johnson's open challenge was answered by...PCO. Johnson kicked out of PCO's moonsault...but he later beat Johnson via submission. The NWA Tag Team Titles will be defended tonight on Super Powerrr. Aron Stevens and Kratos facing a challenge from Thom Lattimer and Chris Adonis. Plus, Matt Cross vs. Matthew Mims - the winner gets a TV Title shot...and Jax Dane vs. Slice Boogie in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. That's JUST Pro Wrestling News for Tuesday, May 11. Laurie & Matt continue to gather data on the heart & soul of a teacher, this time collecting choice insights from Ryan Sagare (pronounced SAY-GAR, like if you were drunk and tried to say "Sammy Hagar" and it just slurred together). Laurie & Matt got to know Ryan through School Rubric, the international education website Ryan co-founded. Matt affectionately refers to Ryan and Wallace, another School Rubric co-founder, as the "School Rubric Dudes." Now based in Austin, Texas where he works as the Coordinator for Distance Learning at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas, Ryan traces his educational path from the Pacific Northwest, to the Midwest, to South America, and eventually the Lone Star State. He informs of us how his mother forced him into his first teaching job at age fourteen, which sparked a journey that would include some questionable outdoor education, luxurious digs in Brazil, and an embracing of online learning. Ryan shares his belief that passion burns in the heart & soul of all great teachers, along with how he married the Girl from (almost) Ipanema. On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Leigh Anne Tiffany. Leigh Anne is a second-year doctoral student in the Information & Media Program with a dual major in Environmental Science and Policy. She works jointly with John Besley, Ph.D., in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations, and Bruno Takahashi, Ph.D., with the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism in the School of Journalism. Her research centers on topics related to science communication and public engagement with science.Leigh Anne's research is inspired by her prior careers as a scientist working in wildlife conservation, a multimedia science journalist for outlets like the PBS NewsHour, NBC, and NPR, and a public relations specialist for a wildlife nonprofit in Washington, D.C. In these different roles, she experienced firsthand the current crisis of scientific findings being regularly miscommunicated to the public. She decided to get her doctoral degree to help find evidence-backed ways to combat this systematic problem. Her research addresses science communication from the viewpoints of scientists, journalists, and public relations practitioners. She looks into why these groups want to communicate about science (and how they do so), how do these groups interact with one another when communicating about science, and the effectiveness of training programs aimed to help these groups become better science communicators. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. You can ask questions about future episodes here. Check The Sci-Files out on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube!

Founding director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation and professor of pediatrics and computer science & engineering at UC San Diego, Rob Knight, discusses several aspects of his past and ongoing contributions to the field of microbiome research. He also discusses his recent focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. On this episode, you'll learn the following: Why COVID-19 is causing a very time-sensitive need for serology tests to detect antibodies What dietary factors affect the microbiome in certain viral and bacterial diseases (e.g. salmonella, influenza) Why planting eucalyptus trees outside Australia was a terrible idea, and how this relates to pathogenic bacteria and microbial communities in the human gut Rob Knight helped develop the technology that enabled the field of microbiome research to get where it is today. For example, Knight's lab has developed software for microbiome analysis, lab protocols for looking at thousands of microbiomes simultaneously, and the American Gut Project, which analyzed hundreds of thousands of microbiome samples from humans to plants to soil and oceanic environments. He explains that while the human genome is fixed, the microbiome is constantly changing. The idea is that if it can be understood what causes or leads to changes in the microbiome, then it may be possible to control the microbiome in ways that confer health advantages. When COVID-19 began spreading globally, Knight was working on a project that aimed to determine the relationship between diet and the microbiome, and how it might make people more or less susceptible to disease. He's now carrying out this research with an eye towards the current pandemic, and hoping to identify whether there are dietary or supplemental interventions that can help people combat the virus, or prevent symptoms of the virus altogether. Knight is currently trying to develop technology that will allow for a broader, simultaneous view of the entire metabolome and microbiome, and the influence of diet upon them both. “In many ways, COVID-19 is providing a stress test of what we can do right now, which is going to be very useful for pointing the way towards what we need to develop over the next few years,” says Knight. He continues by explaining the importance and challenge of being able to detect antibodies to COVID-19, as this would indicate whether someone has been exposed to the virus and is therefore likely to have immunity against it. Armed with this knowledge, people could re-enter work spaces where the risk of COVID-19 exposure is high, and do so knowing that they are unlikely to contract and fall ill from the virus. He also explains the protocol he's developing to this end, which includes COVID-19 surveillance of individuals who are at risk but currently unaffected by the virus, testing of individuals who are showing symptoms, and testing of people who have recovered from the virus. Knight dives deep into the fascinating details of this work and the continuously evolving field of microbiome research. He offers listeners with an impressive amount of information on microorganisms, the latest research on virus-host microbiome mechanisms based on animal models, how bacterial and viral infections respond to certain dietary interventions, how microbiome analysis can be predictive for the development of certain diseases, and more. It has been called “the great destroyer” and “the evil.” The Pentagon refers to it as “the pervasive menace.” It destroys cars, fells bridges, sinks ships, sparks house fires, and nearly brought down the Statue of Liberty. Rust costs America more than $400 billion per year—more than all other natural disasters combined. Journalist Jonathan Waldman traveled from Key West, Florida, to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to meet the colorful and often reclusive people who are fighting our mightiest and unlikeliest enemy. He went into an abandoned steelworks with a brave artist, and then he nearly gets kicked out of Ball Corporation’s Can School. Across the Arctic, he followed a massive high-tech robot that hunts for rust in the Alaska pipeline. On a Florida film set he meets the Defense Department’s rust ambassador, who reveals that the navy’s number one foe isn’t a foreign country but oxidation itself. Through all of these adventures, Jonathan (Jonny) uncovered more about the destructive nature of rust and the implications on our society than anyone ever has, and in this episode we ask him all about it! His newest book is titled, Rust: The Longest War. Jonathan has written for Outside, The Washington Post, The New York Times, McSweeney’s, and the Utne Reader, and also worked as a forklift driver, arborist, summer-camp director, sticker salesman, climbing instructor, and cook. Before landing in the book world, he put in time at a newspaper, a website, a magazine, a radio show, a TV production company, and a couple science museums. He studied writing at Dartmouth and Boston University’s Knight Center for Science Journalism. "We need to re-engineer engineering. Engineers are busy fixing all of the problems we don't have, but they're ignoring all of these problems we do have." - Jonathan Waldman Quotes from Jonathan: What we learn in this episode: Why is a soda can the most engineered object on earth? What are the dangers of plastics and why are they used in almost everything? Why is rust one of the most costly items in our national defense budget? Today on Terra Verde we ask: What place is there for environmental stories in the new, networked, multiplatform, and interactive world of media? It is a foregone conclusion in media circles that journalism as we know it is, or soon will be, kaput. As the huge machine that is 20th Century journalism is dismantled, long before the vultures get a chance to pick at the bones of the last remaining printing press, a class of media creators, critics, and consumers are getting a chance to look over the damage and see what is worth preserving, what is worth building upon, and what is worth throwing away. Dan Gillmor, director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is one of those multi-hyphenate creator/critic/consumers. In a recent submission for the Media Re:Public series, Dan suggested a vision for a participatory media, including five principles that could guide journalism in the 21st Century.
