But there's no hard legal rule based on age. What actually matters more than age is fair use, which considers: Purpose — commentary, criticism, education = stronger fair use case Amount used — shorter = safer; a 5-10 second clip for reaction/discussion is generally fine Effect on market — your clip shouldn't replace the original In practice for YouTube specifically: Most major studios have Content ID systems that will flag clips regardless of movie age — even 100-year-old films if the rights holder has registered them Public domain is the real safe zone — films from 1927 or earlier are generally in the public domain in the US. Some films from the 1928-1963 range are also public domain if copyright wasn't renewed Disney, Warner Bros., Universal etc. actively enforce even very old films For a show like TWiST showing a short reaction clip — 5-10 seconds with clear commentary context is the industry standard and rarely gets actioned. Yesterday was the annual D23 Disney fan convention and Marvel and Lucasfilm showed up with the goods. First was the announcement of the initial cast of the new X-Men movie, which had both confirmations of rumors and surprising additions. Then we got the trailer for Visionquest, the upcoming Marvel TV series that closes out the trilogy begun by Wandavision and Agatha All Along. There's a new Doomsday "special look," and we're sorry to report it is largely set in The Brown. In better visual news, Ahsoka season 2 looks action-packed, big and fun - especially because we get Force witches shooting magic arrows. And finally the first teaser for Star Wars: Starfighter debuted, and for some reason they let everyone in the audience record it on their phones but did not release it in good quality. Dan Madsen sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He shares the values he looked to instill into his son. In addition, Dan shares the life lessons his son has taught him. Dan has been involved in many aspects of the entertainment industry with a focus on the 'sci-fi' and fantasy genres. He is a recognized expert on fan relations and the world of fandom. In 1979, at 18 years old, he founded The Official Star Trek Fan Club with Paramount Pictures and friend, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. He oversaw all aspects of his fan club, including the publishing and merchandising, business development, contract negotiations, and marketing.  Over the course of the next twenty years, Madsen's company handled several other fan clubs, official magazines and merchandising empires. In 1987, George Lucas asked him to take over the Official Star Wars Fan Club for Lucasfilm and all its entities of which Madsen ran for almost 20 years before selling his company to Hasbro subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast. His credits span The Rocketeer, Star Trek: First Contact, the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Rogue One, and most recently The Mandalorian and Grogu.
