Gareth Brown's 2024 novel brings us a little sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, action, and time travel along with crazy characters and lots of drama. Cassie Andrews, a book seller in New York City, receives a magical book from her favorite customer who happened to die in the bookshop. The doors in this wonderful book take her and her best friend Izzy to wherever they wish. They encounter numerous people who also possess “special” books and people who use their books' powers for evil. The Clos des Fous Pinot Noir we enjoyed tied in the sweet friendship of Cassie and Izzy and this wine that was grown by four friends in Chile. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/readingbetweenthewines/support
Magical realism isn't my preferred genre—I typically gravitate toward psychological thrillers with a sharp twist or historical fiction with heart-wrenching accuracy, but when I heard about this debut novel, The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown, a book about books with a unique concept and complex world building just a shade off of our own, I couldn't resist.
There's a food theme in this week's episode as we head to Wigtown to chat to The Hebridean Baker Coinneach MacLeod, food historian Pen Vogler on her books Scoff and Stuffed and philosopher Julian Baggini tells us How The World Eats. Plus we get the Books of Your Life from Gareth Brown and find new books in the RNIB Library. The image used is a fun collage featuring moments from the Wigtown Book Festival, along with some of the authors and their works. On the top left, there's the festival's lovely handwritten-style logo with little birds fluttering around it. Just beside that, we see the cover of The Hebridean Baker by Coinneach MacLeod, showcasing a man in a kilt standing in the rugged Scottish outdoors—probably hinting at some great Scottish baking stories! To the right, we have the RNIB Connect Radio logo. In the middle left, there's a picture of three smiling people: Robert Kirkwood (who you might know from RNIB Radio) is standing on the left, holding a microphone. Next to him is Coinneach MacLeod holding a book, and to the right of him is Pen Vogler, who is holding her book Stuffed: A History of Good Food and Hard Times. Then, on the center right, there's a nice portrait of Pen Vogler herself, looking thoughtful and confident, with her book cover prominently displayed next to her. Moving down to the bottom, on the left is the colorful cover of How the World Eats by Julian Baggini, which seems to explore food from different cultures across the globe. And on the bottom right, there's a picture of Julian Baggini himself, standing casually outdoors against a stone wall. All in all, this collage gives a taste of the authors and books you'd encounter at the festival, with a nice focus on food and culture.
In a talk sponsored by RNIB Connect Radio, Gareth Brown talks to Teddy Jameson live on stage at the Wigtown Book Festival about his best-selling time-travelling page turner, The Book of Doors. Plus we find some brand new books in the RNIB Library.

In this WEEKEND WATCHLIST I'm joined by Gareth Brown from Forager Funds to talk about Blancco (AIM:BLTG) Here's a recent quarterly report from Forager: https://foragerfunds.com/news/investor_resources/quarterly-report-both-funds-september-2021/ “Erasure software market leader Blancco (AIM:BLTG) reported its full year result. The second half was strong, as expected, with revenue up 19% despite a currency headwind. The Enterprise division, selling direct to large corporations, continues to shine, with second half revenues increasing 35% and important new business wins that should be recurring in nature. The ITAD division, which sells erasure licences to equipment recyclers, did better than we should expect longer term, with a surge of end-of-life hardware processing occurring post COVID. The mobile phone recycling division didn't inspire, generating revenues the same as the prior year, but it should benefit significantly from the return to normal life.” Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Proudly brought to you in association with S A Partners, a world-leading business transformation consultancy.IntroductionWelcome to episode 33 of the Enterprise Excellence Podcast. I am so pleased to have Mr Gareth Brown with me here today. Gareth has a wide history in Enterprise Excellence, working for and leading organisation transformation journeys to award-winning results. Gareth is passionate about helping organisations establish continuous improvement and development in leadership, process and results.SummaryGareth won a Shingo prize at VistaPrint for this approach. It was a greenfield opportunity, as the factory was being built from the ground up. Gareth asked the staff, during construction, about how they wanted to work in this new facility. He used a future-state visualisation exercise. Imagine you are at a BBQ in two years, and you're telling your friends and family, "I work for (insert). It's incredible, it's achieving so much, and I love working there." Gareth then asked the team for their top five reasons for being able to state this. These set of values or behaviours were grouped and became the cultural framework for the team. When tricky conversations about the culture arose in the following six months, which they did, consulting the list of behaviours was often enough to diffuse any problems. The initial group of 30 staff was being scaled to 100 people. The expectation was that the new people would assimilate to the way things were being done (excellently!) from the start. Onboarding new staff in the right way, focussing on excellent culture and behaviours is an ideal situation. Quotes4.18min if you don't know how you're actually performing, then it's very, very difficult to engage in the problem. Right? So you need to be able to put the problem or the opportunity up in lights. So that's the first thing.7:00min and even before we turned the first machine on at VistaPrint, we had discussions with the team about, "What does good look like? What kind of organisation do we want?"11:05min but it was certainly helpful to be able to visualise that long term equation and use that as a basis of, "Why are we doing these things?"13:20min every hour that we spent on building these foundations right at the start would save us nine or ten hours of grief later on.14:42min I think we underestimate the importance of really investing in that person as a leader at the start to make sure that they're part of the team and they understand where you want them to think differently as well as where you'd like them to subscribe to the existing paradigms. Key TakeawayThe key takeaway from this episode was Gareth's focus on people, process, and performance. Gareth outlined the importance of getting people on the journey and culturally engaged first. Without motivation to change and adopt new things, there is very little chance of team members engaging and supporting the journey. Emotion, either positive or negative, helps people embrace and lock away new learning and form new habits. When new people join a new organisation, they naturally have a high level of emotion and desire to fit in. This is a prime time to achieve cultural and systemic alignment with people. If you have a greenfield site opportunity, plan upfront and focus on the most important things, as Gareth and his team did. If you don't have that opportunity, review your new team member onboarding process. How can you improve this system to engage new employees early? Align them to the culture and system improvement approach you are looking to in the future? LinksGareth's Profile: linkedin.com/in/garSA Partners

So today's interview is with Paul Green and Gareth Brown from Todays Taekwondo. Firstly I had to congratulate them on their achievements to date 300k followers on Facebook, the YouTube channel, the website, the downloadable tutorials, and obviously for all the medals that the athletes they've coached within team GB have achieved. We chat about at the numbers 2 golds from the Olympics, 4 world champions, 8 Grand Prix golds, and those are just the ones within the top competitions, we discuss how it must have been great to be a part of those athletes achievements. Todays Taekwondo mission statement says both Paul & Gareth want to continue developing innovative methods to produce world-class athletes and coaches. I ask them when did they both sit down and decide to share their knowledge on a global scale? Did they realise how big it would become and eventually where it would take them both? The BBC sports website it states one month after resigning from team GB they had both been recruited by USA Taekwondo...... They tell our listeners exactly where they are going, doing, and more importantly if Todays Taekwondo will still be continuing its goal to help others? Next is a chat about the YouTube channel, I've watched them all......the content is impressive, I like how they hold nothing back, demonstrate it, explain it to great detail and show elite athletes also training it. it's a great way to be, to improve as coaches by giving out everything, ..... we chat about how it must keep them evolving and improving. Both Gareth & Paul must have seen so many changes in the sport of Taekwondo I ask them both if they still use methods learned back when they were competing or has it evolved so much it's a completely new set of skills and drills. We take a walk back down memory lane and I ask them if we can look back at both their lives so far, where did Taekwondo start for them both and why did they decide to take up a martial art. GB Taekwondo has been a major part of both their lives competing and coaching, they've both competed and coached at a high level. Which made them most nervous, anxious, or determined, competing or coaching? I ask them a little about Team GB here as I know after speaking to some of the GB Taekwondo guys they are missed, they have both been a major part of the success GB has had and is continuing to have so don't miss their answers. I ask them both, looking into the future where do they think GB Taekwondo will be in the tables and what do they think needs to happen to keep the standards they have both helped to achieve. What is the long-term goal for Paul Green and Gareth Brown? where do they see themselves in 5-10 yrs, does their own training centre come into it or do they want to be the coaches the countries come running to when medal counts get low......? I ask them what is each of their proudest moments. What advice do they have for up and coming athletes and also coaches looking to make a difference? And finally the one last question from me, what is it that makes Taekwondo different to other martial arts and how would they describe what it takes to be a black belt? How can you get in touch with them? See links below. Email: todaystaekwondo@gmail.com Facebook: @todaystaekwondo YouTube: Todays Taekwondo Website: www.todaystaekwondo.com It was an enjoyable interview and I look forward to interviewing them both once they settle into America.

Master Rondy is the owner of White Tiger Taekwondo & Martial Arts - known as the world's largest superschool located in Cary, NC, USA. The 24,000 sq. ft. school just celebrated its 22nd anniversary and enrolled its 12 thousandth student. Master Rondy lived in Korea from ‘94-'96 as a member of the Korean Tigers Professional Demonstration Team. Today she is the Program Director and instructs at White Tiger, is a columnist for Taekwondo Times Magazine, serves on the Kukkiwon Advisory Board and the US Taekwondo Committee. Master Rondy also travels the world to share her marketing and PR background to help other school owners “achieve their dream”. So today's interview with Master Rondy McKee we will be discussing the Business side of running a martial art school and a few other questions on Taekwondo. I first met Master Rondy with my instructor Master Andrew Brown from Glasgow, he had met Master Rondy over in Korea and was invited to come over to White Tiger Tkd Headquarters in Cary, North Carolina maybe 1997/8. We chat about how amazing White Tiger is and how her profile has grown since those days. We hear about her background and how she came to get where she is today. Master Rondy is running business seminars all over the world, with her most recent in Spain. I ask Master Rondy if she could tell us about the kinda things she teaches at these seminars. Next, I ask Master Rondy what would she say is the biggest problems facing independent martial arts schools and also what kind of things keep coming up in her seminars from other school owners......... is this why she has set up the White Tiger Global Alliance? I ask her to tell us a little more about this alliance and how can people get involved. Two of GB's National coaches, (Paul Green & Gareth Brown) have both picked up coaching director jobs within the US taekwondo coaching team - I ask Master Rondy if she has much experience of The National team set up? And if she has any advice or warnings for them. Next, I ask if Master Rondy would you like to get more involved within the World Taekwondo set up, if so what would she like to do and see happen. The Kukkiwon is still responsible for Taekwondo black belt certification and Master training, I ask Master Rondy if she thinks there's something more the Kukkiwon could do to promote and spread the knowledge some of these high ranking masters have? I've seen on a few occasions Master Rondy also practices Wing Chun with Samuel Kwok we chat about cross training - one last question from me- the usual one... what is it that makes Taekwondo different to other martial arts and how would she describe what it takes to be a black belt. And finally we ask her how can people get in touch with her and we've shared her answers below; Master Rondy Email: MasterRondy@gmail.com Facebook: @masterrondy White Tiger TKD Facebook: @WhiteTigerTKD Website: www.whitetigertkd.com 919-469-3553 office 919-208-3912 cell White Tiger Global Alliance Facebook: @GrandmasterRondy Website: www.whitetigergloballiance.com
