Related story: Apple Vision Pro: Why one longtime software shop is jumping head-first into spatial computing Then, it's AI, politics, and a new attempt to detect and defuse deepfakes. A few weeks ago on the show, Oren Etzioni, a University of Washington computer science professor and longtime artificial intelligence specialist, hinted at a secret project in the works. This week, he unveiled nonprofit, nonpartisan technology organization, TrueMedia.org, that is developing an AI-powered tool to detect AI-generated deepfake videos, photos, and audio, aiming to combat political disinformation in the leadup to the 2024 elections. We jumped back on the line with Etzioni to get the details on the new initiatives, and discuss the pros and cons of the rapid development of new generative AI tools for democracy and society. This week's Chit Chat Across the Pond is really special. It's an interview with Ken Case, the CEO of Omnigroup. We don't actually talk much about his current work, but rather start back with how he went to college when he was only 13 years old at the University of Washington. He takes us on the fascinating journey of technology that lead him to work for Steve Jobs's NeXT computer company and how it changed his view of what computing could be. It's a wonderful story filled with super geeky details including bitnet (which I'd never heard of) and how he helped write the precursor to IRC.

The Omni Show, a podcast that features the people who bring you all the great software from Omni Group, just marked its first anniversary. The host of that show, marketing human Brent Simmons, joins us on Micro Monday to talk about what is special about this type of podcast. It’s important to note that we’re not just getting the stories of people who could potentially be stars later. We want every story and every single person’s voice. I often think back to the punk rock ethos: kill all rock stars. The audience and the band should be interchangeable. We also talk about his project, NetNewsWire, an app he first launched in 2002, sold to another company in 2005, and then re-acquired this year. That leads us to talking about RSS and Micro.blog, and what we hope to see in the future of the internet and social media.
