Show Notes: Christiane Pendarvis found her career passion in retail and retail merchandising in Neiman Marcus department stores in Dallas, Texas. She started working in a high-end department store, and after working in the retail industry, she went back to business school and earned an MBA. Experience as a Team Lead and Mentor After business school, Christiane worked at Procter & Gamble in their brand management arena, but she missed retail and has been there ever since. Throughout her career, she has worked for various large brands and has moved across the country, including Dallas, North Carolina, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; New York City and finally L.A. She worked at various companies and gained exposure to different mentalities which gave her valuable experience in both life and work and she explains how her personal growth impacted her professional growth. Her desire today, as a senior executive, anchors on impact and exposure, showcasing the possibilities for other women. She feels blessed to have gone through these moves, cities, and companies, and has been able to impact and expose a wide group of people. She shares a story of how she helped team members grow professionally when working for a direct to consumer retailer in New York City, overseeing websites and a third-party marketplace business. Christiane aims to guide and develop people by considering both the company's needs and individual needs, leveraging their strengths to drive business performance while escalating learning, growth, and confidence. Working as CO President and Chief Merchant at Savage As CO president and chief merchant at Savage X Fenty lingerie by Rihanna, Christiane talks about her experience in merchandising roles. She describes the role as similar to a buying role, where it involves sourcing product, pricing, inventory. However, at Savage X Fenty, Christiane oversaw all functions related to product creation, including designers, fabric suppliers, technical designers, production teams, and inventory management. The role involves working on various products at different stages of development, such as holiday assortments, samples, and inventory management. Each season is at a different stage, making it challenging to balance the development of different products while also managing the business. Christiane enjoys this dynamic role as it allows him to be inspired but also tactical in solving problems. In addition to overseeing the merchandising team, she also manages e-commerce and direct to consumer sales. The Pandemic - A Rocket Year Christiane shares her experiences at Savages during the pandemic. The business started in May 2018 just before the pandemic. The business tripled its size in 2020 due to the pandemic, which was a surprise blessing for the business, as it was a direct-to-consumer business that relied on social media to attract customers. In 2021, the business almost doubled from the previous year, with a total employee base of 225 people. This growth was not only financial but also a success as a leader and executive. The company also opened retail stores, with hundreds of additional employees. Managing supply chain challenges during the pandemic was challenging, but the overall impact on the business and the cultural relevance of Savage was also a proud moment for Christiane. The Apparel Industry Culture Christiane talks about the misconceptions people may have about the apparel industry. She explains it is not all as glamorous as many people think. It is a hyper-competitive, business-oriented industry with sustainability challenges. The best people and retailers are run well, like any other business. Victoria's Secret, for example, has a $7 billion revenue business. When it comes to business, it's not just about glamor; it's about strategic product selection, consumer appeal, positioning in the marketplace, and competitiveness. People sometimes underestimate the importance of retail, thinking it's a great place to be if you're a business. However, the industry is not just about fashion, it has challenges surrounding sustainability, and responsible growth. Staying in Tune with the Market Christiane shares what she has learned about merchandising and her approach to staying in tune with the market, the importance of testing and learning, and hiring the right people for the right roles. She acknowledges that she is not a trend-setter and that she may not be able to keep up with all the latest trends. She believes that having the right people in the right roles is essential for a company to succeed. She explains how she manages her employees to help them improve their performance, enjoy their work, and remain loyal to the company. While she may not be in the loop with general trends, she does keep up with product trends. She enjoys spending time in stores and trying new beauty products, but culturally, she may not be the best person to stay updated on the latest trends. She also explains how she hires talent and ensures a cultural fit. Personal and Professional Growth Christiane shares her journey of self-acceptance and the unexpected opportunities she has encountered. She admits to never having considered becoming the CEO of a company, and has learned now to feel more comfortable not knowing and reaching out for help. She acknowledges that the false narrative of having to have it all together and expose herself to others' perspectives is a false narrative. Her openness towards uncertainty and seeking help has helped build success in her career. She has developed a long-term career plan based on exploration and curiosity, focusing on opportunities that have opened doors she couldn't have predicted. Influential Professors and Courses at Harvard Christiane highlights her involvement in various activities and courses. She started a basketball cheerleaders group, which provided her with broader exposure and allowed her to meet interesting people from different circles within the community. She also enjoyed supporting the sports team and was a member of Kuumba, a group that provided a platform for her to sing and perform and build a strong network of friends. She was treasurer of the organization that helped fund a Kuumba tour. Christiane believes that the tight network she formed at Harvard has remained strong even 35 years later, with deeper friendships formed due to the shared experience and respect within the class. Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion
In the 112th episode of Earned, we sit down with Christiane Pendarvis, Co-CEO of Pattern Beauty and former Co-President of Savage X Fenty. To start, we dive into what it was like for Christiane as she came into the top role at Pattern: CEO. After years of working in the fashion industry, the jump to beauty was daunting, but Christiane explains how she took a humble approach and understood that listening would help to build a solid foundation. Next, Christiane shares her advice to not lose sight of the clarity you once had on the outside of an organization, as it can quickly dissipate once you're immersed in the day-to-day. We explore Christiane's strategy of urgency awareness, which she uses to decide if the situation is mission-critical and requires a clean slate, or whether it requires smaller levels of change. Unpacking the success factors behind Rihanna's brand Savage X Fenty, Christiane explains that the market was “ripe” for this brand, which promotes confidence, inclusivity, and fearlessness for women. We then learn about how a brand's foundation, product assortment, and perfect-storm opportunities can lead to massive success. Christiane emphasizes the importance of a founder being ingrained in the brand's story, which she has seen firsthand with both Tracee Ellis Ross (Pattern Beauty) and Rihanna (Savage X Fenty). When people are genuine and authentic in their product and brand creation, it translates into opportunities that consumers can relate to, and products they want to buy. Christiane then reveals her own pivot to passion- and purpose-driven brands, and shares that as she's progressed in her career, the quality of an idea has become increasingly important. To close the show, Christiane speaks to the growth of the gaming industry, and where she (and her children) think it's headed next. In this episode, you will learn: The secrets behind transitioning to a brand that's making waves with authenticity and purpose. The importance of balancing brand position and cultural timing. Orcas Are Attacking Boats Near Spain. Scientists Don't Know Why This Thursday, the Supreme Court restricted the scope of the Clean Water Act pertaining to wetlands, in a 5-4 vote. This could affect the Environmental Protection Agency's power to protect certain kinds of wetlands, which help reduce the impacts of flooding by absorbing water, and also act as natural filters that make drinking water cleaner. Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the court's three liberal members in the dissent, writing that the decision will have, “significant repercussions for water quality and flood control throughout the United States.” Plus, earlier this month, three orcas attacked a boat, leading to its sinking. This is the third time an incident like this has happened in the past three years, accompanied by a large rise of orcas attacking boats near the Strait of Gibraltar. Scientists are unsure of the cause. One theory is that these attacks could be a fad, led by juvenile orcas in the area, a documented behavior in this subpopulation of the dolphin family. They could also be a response to a potential bad encounter between boats and orcas in the area. Science Friday's Charles Bergquist talks with Sophie Bushwick, technology editor for Scientific American, about these and other stories from this week in science news, including a preview of a hot El Niño summer, an amateur astronomer who discovered a new supernova, and alleviating waste problems by using recycled diapers in concrete. A Famous Sled Dog's Genome Holds Evolutionary Surprises Do you remember the story of Balto? In 1925, the town of Nome, Alaska, was facing a diphtheria outbreak. Balto was a sled dog and a very good boy who helped deliver life-saving medicine to the people in the town. Balto's twisty tale has been told many times, including in a 1990s animated movie in which Kevin Bacon voiced the iconic dog. But last month, scientists uncovered a new side of Balto. They sequenced his genes and discovered the sled dog wasn't exactly who they expected. The study published in the journal Science, was part of a project called Zoonomia, which aims to better understand the evolution of mammals, including our own genome, by looking at the genes of other animals—from narwhals to aardvarks. Guest host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Elinor Karlsson, associate professor in Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology at the UMass Chan Medical School and director of Vertebrate Genomics at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard; Dr. Katie Moon, post-doctoral researcher who led Balto's study; and Dr. Beth Shapiro, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz, who coauthored the new study on Balto and another paper which identified animals that are most likely to face extinction. The Long And Short Of Telomere Activity Telomeres are repeating short sequences of genetic code (in humans, TTAGGG) located on the ends of chromosomes. They act as a buffer during the cell replication process. Loops at the end of the telomere prevent chromosomes from getting inadvertently stuck together by DNA repair enzymes. Over the lifetime of the cell, the telomeres become shorter and shorter with each cell division. When they become too short, the cell dies. Telomere sequences weren't thought to do much else—sort of like the plastic tip at the end of a shoelace. Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers now argue that telomeres may actually encode for two short proteins. Normally, those proteins aren't released into the cell. However, if the telomere is damaged—or as it gets shorter during repeated cell replication cycles—those signaling proteins may be able to leak out into the cell and affect other processes, perhaps altering nucleic acid metabolism and protein synthesis, or triggering cellular inflammation. Jack Griffith, one of the authors of the report and the Kenan Distinguished Professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, joins SciFri's Charles Bergquist to talk about the idea and what other secrets may lie inside the telomere. Philadelphia's Mütter Museum Takes Down Digital Resources Robert Pendarvis gave his heart to Philadelphia's Mütter Museum. Literally. He has a rare condition called acromegaly, where his body makes too much growth hormone, which causes bones, cartilage and organs to keep growing. The condition affected his heart, so much so that a heart valve leaked. He had a heart transplant in 2020. Pendarvis thought his original heart could tell an important story, and teach others about this rare condition, which is why he was determined to put it on display at the Mütter Museum. The Mütter Museum is a Philadelphia institution, a medical museum that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to its rooms filled with anatomical specimens, models, and old medical instruments. The place is not for the squeamish. Display cases show skulls, abnormal skeletons, and a jar containing the bodies of stillborn conjoined twins. Pendarvis thought it would be the perfect home for his heart — and more. To read the rest, visit sciencefriday.com To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. In this special crossover episode of Adult ISH, the team is joining forces with KQED's “Rightnowish” podcast. Together, we're figuring out our collective ISH. Pendarvis Harshaw is the host of “Rightnowish,” an arts and culture columnist at KQED in Northern California, and a YR alum. He's also the author of “OG Told Me,” a memoir about his experiences growing up in Oakland and learning from community elders. Before this episode, host Nyge Turner and Pendarvis had only met once. They never got a chance to truly connect. But it turns out the two have a lot in common. Something that's been on both of their minds lately is friendships, specifically their evolution over time. This week, tune in to their unscripted conversation on this subject for double the host power, and double the advice. Adult ISH is produced by YR Media and brought to you by PRX's Radiotopia.
It's been an intense few weeks. And we believe that all of us deserve to take a break and take care of ourselves. So in the spirit of that, we're going to play an episode to help keep us all going despite all that's happening in the world. In this episode of Rightnowish, host Pendarvis Harshaw speaks with AB Banks, in the first of a four-part series called Big Love. Banks works with the People's Programs in Oakland, serving unhoused people through clinics and food donations. Banks is also deep in the practice of meditation, and recently launched a series of meditative videos called Mad Chill. AB and Pendarvis talk about love as a communal act, confidence, and how self-love can be revolutionary.

Sometimes you hear people speaking a different language like Spanish. You don't really understand the language but you know what they're saying. Other times you hear people speaking in Chinese and you don't have any grasp of what it is. When I listen to Monk play improvisation with a trio or quartet that's a whole different story. I really understand that this guy is thoughtful and he's not racing anybody Oddly enough when I listened to Monk, before I understood how his mind worked (mental illness). When I listen to his music I really understood where he was coming from. I may not have understood exactly what he was playing but I understood where it was coming from. That made a huge, huge impression on me, even playing the drums. If you look at Monk play you see what he's thinking and you can see what he's feeling and you hear it. It translates from his brain to his heart to his hands to you. That's the kind of improvisation for me. In the early days I played so much with Dave Spinozza because we grew up together and we were in bands together. If I wasn't playing in "Brethren" or Johnny Winter or Edgar Winters band than we were doing gigs at Mickell's. We played a ton of really groove and improv stuff. Somebody would write a song like Tropea (John) or Leon Pendarvis. We would play the head a couple of times and than Pendarvis would blow or Spinozza would blow or Will Lee would start going off. I liked it cause it didn't last too long. I'm thinking you say everything you need to say in a minute or two. Give them each a minute and let's move on to the next song and see what they have to say there. I didn't like it when songs lasted 15 minutes. I've heard guys say everything they need to say in 15 seconds and be very very good at it and move on. There was a guy I worked with out here in LA and I did some gigs with him. He was doing some gigs and he was calling me to play live with him. I've seen him play and I know he's great cause we did some sessions together. I said, "I'll do it but let's not do these solos that last 15-20 minutes." We rehearsed a little bit and so talked with him about it, he said, "yea man that sounds great." We got on stage and I swear to god I was yelling "stop, move on" in the middle of tunes and he never paid attention. I told him after, "this isn't fun for me, this isn't what I want to do. I don't want to go see a guy slamming cymbals, throwing sticks at the kit for 20 minutes on one song. That's what I felt I was doing. We were repeating phrases, we were going back and playing the same thing over again. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

How can the Metal Working Nation close the manufacturing skills gap? As the manufacturing industry continues to grow with the demand for fast and excellent production, it is imperative that the proper skills be found, fostered, and taught. Even with the desirable technological sophistication of the modern manufacturing world, young talent isn’t being found quickly enough to fill the gap left by the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. Jim and Jason brainstorm with guest speakers Hernan Ricaurte (Owner of Ricaurte Precision), Brian Grigson (General Manager of Axxis Corporation), and Brain Pendarvis (Owner of Pendarvis Manufacturing) about how manufacturing leaders can take action to influence the next generation of machinists. Be sure to listen to the entire episode to catch the best insights into the real and persisting problem of the manufacturing skills gap! Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact Putting a finger on the pulse of the manufacturing skills gap Ricaurte, Grigson, and Pendarvis all agree that the skills gap is certainly a major issue of the modern manufacturing world. The “great wave” is here; the older are retiring and the younger aren’t qualified or aren’t interested. Pendarvis shares the struggle of finding talent skilled in the newest manufacturing technology. Leaders know that you can’t just stick anyone on your CNC machines. While the skills gap is a real and present problem, it doesn’t have to remain that way. Changing the perception of manufacturing is the first step. Most high schoolers don’t even know that trade school for CNC machining or similar work is an option. Many still think that they have to go to college to have a meaningful career. Manufacturing, however, offers so much at such little training cost. Building bridges with your community is the first step to closing the skills gap. Give presentations at the local middle and high schools, invite schools to tour your facilities and show them that what they need - and want - in a career can be found in manufacturing. “It’s not always money that people want,” says Grigson. A clean environment, security, incentives, and evident room for company growth are all attributes that can help your business attract young talent. Effective training is grounded in effective culture Who are you as a company? What is your niche? While there is a skills issue, it is important to only hire the skills that you need. What is your company culture? The culture that you want to foster within your business begins with you as the leader. One challenge created by the skills gap is finding someone who is not only talented but also a good fit within your company. Having more experienced employees shadow and oversee the work of new hires or interns provides the opportunity for not only the skills - but for the culture - to be taught. Ricaurte shares the lessons he learned from studying the manufacturing culture of Japanese machinists. Fostering a culture of accountability and excellence if key. Attention to detail, respect for one another, and the willingness to learn are all necessary to an effective workplace Training the younger generation within that culture will help produce the future talent that you need. Don’t forget to listen to the rest of the episode for more insight into fostering effective culture! What makes a great modern machinist? It actually depends on the work and skill-set required! With the advancement of technology, the skill sets needed by manufacturers grows more diverse. While not everyone will be adept in all areas of machining, they always need to be willing to learn and grow. Curiosity is a sign of a great future machinist. While genuine curiosity, humility, excellent work ethic, and personal drive are all hard to detect in an interview, they should be attributes that you are striving to discover. Running an apprenticeship or internship program at your shop is also a highly effective way to discover and nurture new talent. Involve high schoolers in your company’s growth and demonstrate to them the future possibilities within manufacturing. Hiring part-time can also be a good tactic to see if you and your new employee are a good long-term fit. Finding and providing opportunity in unlikely places Your local high school isn’t the only place to find potential future talent to invest in. Underprivileged communities are gold when it comes to finding young people with the passion and drive to try something unconventional - such as attending trade school to learn CNC machining. There are bright, curious minds everywhere! Many kids don’t know that manufacturing is even an option among today’s career paths. Manufacturing leaders need to begin investing in and inspiring the talent and ability of young people. Yes, the manufacturing skills gap is a problem, but it’s not insurmountable. Listen to the full episode to learn more about how you can make a difference in inspiring the next generation of manufacturers! Here’s The Good Stuff! Preparing for the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. Do the challenges created by the skills gap affect all parts of the country equally? The tie between the skills gap and advancing technology. Knowing your niche gives you vision in knowing what talent to pursue. The challenges surrounding changing the old perception of manufacturing. Different strategies for finding the right fit. What you should be looking for in a potential hire. What you value may differ with each job opening. Conversation Parade: An Adventure Time Podcast – Infinite Guest Podcast Network
We're five episodes in to the new season of Adventure Time, meaning John and Mike have plenty to talk about on the latest Conversation Parade. Mike has noticed that there's been a lot of talk about trusting the process in some recent stories. He's wondering if it's the King of Ooo saying that or someone much higher up the pecking order. John has been thinking about dirt holes and how each of the five new episodes features dirt holes. Are they graves? Are they gardens? Are they some combination of the two? Plus, we talk to Adventure Time writer and voice of Root Beer Guy (and Dirt Beer Guy) Jack Pendarvis. He was a mild-mannered university professor in Mississippi when he got the call to join Adventure Time. Now he's a mild-mannered cartoon writer who still lives in Mississippi.
Harold Lee returns to the podcast to drop some knowledge on his youngest grandson. Topics covered are Elkton Diner history, Turkey's role in World War I, bringing train service back to Elkton, how we are related to General John Buford and his role in the Civil War. Also we talk of Harold's mother's experience teaching school in the bayou. Cameos from grandmother Frances Lee and family friend Jim Kline. Thanks to the estates of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. @DMTAMpod
