In this episode of Travel Party of 5, we dive into the vibrant and diverse food scene of Portland, Oregon. Join us as we explore one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon, starting with the stylish Hyatt Centric. This hotel offered a fantastic experience, even allowing me to check off another brand from my Hyatt bingo card. Situated in the heart of downtown, the Hyatt Centric is not only a convenient stay but also one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon. While in Portland, I had the chance to sample some of the best Vietnamese food Portland has to offer. I had a standout visit to Cuon, a small, unassuming spot that served the most delicious banh mi sandwich I've ever had. This little gem truly showcases the best Vietnamese food Portland boasts, with its perfect blend of flavors and fresh ingredients.Portland is known for its fun and eclectic dining scene, and I got to experience some fun Portland restaurants firsthand. Cartopia was a fantastic food stall area with a variety of choices, from Egyptian/Mediterranean to Pizza to Pad Thai, making it an ideal spot for a group dinner. Another highlight was Lil' Shalom, where I enjoyed delicious Mediterranean dishes like burnt beef ends with hummus and pita.Of course, no food tour of Portland would be complete without a nod to the iconic Anthony Bourdain. I had the pleasure of dining at Apizza Scholls, a spot Bourdain visited during his time in Portland. The pizza here lived up to its reputation, making it one of the must-visit fun Portland restaurants.Back at the Hyatt Centric, I enjoyed the hotel's amenities, including a convenient restaurant in the lobby serving breakfast, coffee, and evening meals. This made it easy to grab a bite without venturing far, though Portland's bustling food scene always tempted me to explore more.Throughout the episode, I share more about my stay at the Hyatt Centric, detailing why it's one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon. Its central location made it easy to explore the city, and its industrial-chic vibe added to the overall experience. However, for families planning a trip, I offer tips on choosing the right accommodation to suit everyone's needs.Join us as we uncover some fun Portland restaurants and the best Vietnamese food Portland has to offer. Whether you're planning a trip to the city or just a foodie at heart, this episode is packed with insights and recommendations to make your Portland adventure unforgettable. Don't miss out on hearing about the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon, and the delectable delights that await you in this fantastic city. Are ranked choice voting and multi-member districts a cure for the hyperpartisanship and partisan extremism plaguing politics? In this episode, we talk with Rob Richie, who has been the leader of FairVote since co-founding it in 1992. Richie shares evidence for how ranked choice voting is increasing representation and opportunities for new voices and new players in politics in places where it has been adopted. Mary Peltola, who is the first Alaska native to ever serve in Congress, is one such example. As a result of the passage of ballot Measure 26-228 in the 2022 election with 58% of voters approving, Portland is set to become the largest city in the United States to use both ranked choice voting and multi-member City Council districts, a combination known as proportional representation that political scientists agree is a “gold standard” of democratic systems. We also talk with Damon Motz-Storey who was part of grassroots efforts to adopt the reforms in Portand. Links in this episode FairVote  Portland Charter Review Commission  RCVIS

On today's episode, we're chatting with best selling author and Teaching Pastor at Bridgetown Church in Portand, OR, Pastor John Mark Comer.   So, if you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you’ve heard us share from time to time how God’s had us on this journey over the last few years of moving from just a "Church on Sunday, smallgroup on Monday, daily quiet time" lifestyle to really learning and centering our lives around the ways of Jesus (the spiritual disciplines) with the goal of course to become more like Him.  And it's been wonderful to hear from so many of you who have been on a similar journey as well!   It’s crazy to say that I’ve been a Christian for most of my 38 years of life and am just now learning about incredible things like the Prayer of Examen, how to practice Sabbath, and the one that’s probably changed me the most personally, the practice of slowing down, or as Dallas Willard puts it, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.   John Mark has just released his 4th book with this exact title, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, and we could not be more excited to chat with him about it today!  John Mark shares his journey of going from “successful” megachurch pastor, to hitting a wall of burnout and hurry sickness, to coming out on the other side, still loving and serving Jesus but now thankfully from a much healthier place emotionally and spiritually.   We talk with John Mark about what it looks like to move from just a "church on Sunday" lifestyle to truly centering our lives around the rhythms of Jesus in order to become more like Him.  John Mark unpacks the danger of living a hurried life, just how much it actually steals from us, and practical steps to move toward a slower more soulful way of living.   Take a deep breath. Let your heart slow down. There has only been one boxing card in Portland, Oregon in the last 12 years. This past December, former super featherweight champion Steve Forbes and co-promoter Christina Lunzman organized a five-fight card under their promotional banner, 2 Pound Sports & Entertainment. Headlined by Tacoma, Washington-based cruiserweight prospect Marquice Weston, the event proved that boxing was welcome in the Rose City. It's been a few months, but on August 25th, 2 Pound Sports & Entertainment returns to the Jackson Armory for another five-fight card. On a special edition of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, boxing historian Patrick Connor welcomes Forbes and Lunzman to the show to discuss 2 Pound's "Fight Night 2," The Contender, the future of boxing in Portand and the Pacific Northwest and more. Megan Smithey set the tone for Odyssey's "Body" show way back in December 2015, opening the event with a story that ran the gamut between funny, sad, and heartwarming. It's a story about her relationship with her body, and with the voice that lives in all of our heads, telling us we're not good enough. From Megan's Odyssey bio: Megan Smithey is a biomedical research scientist, who secretly just wants to be left alone with an old dog and a good book. A transplant to the desert from the Pacific Northwest, she is surprised that her “temporary stop” in Tucson has lasted eight years, and that her tolerance for rain and gloomy weather has been completely ruined by living in this beautiful place. Once again, the universe has proven her “plan” irrelevant and a tiny bit naïve, so now she's trying to lessen the stranglehold on the reins. This is proving a great idea, yet a difficult practice, over and over and over and over… This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room on December 3rd, 2015, and was curated by Carolyn Langford Hussein Fort. For Jono's "Fool Disclosure" of the week he opens up on his return to strugling with porn.  We talk basketball and the Portand trail blazers road to the playoffss. We finish with Jono running us through the school play he is writing and how being late for its pending deadline is a source of almost as much shame and guilt as his return to porn.

North American culture is in transition in many ways, and religion is one of those areas that is in transition, especially away from organized religion to other avenues. As such these various avenues are resources for resistance to oppression and for positive activism in our world.  Both of today's guests live in the Portland Metro and represent the transition that is taking place. Karen Garst says that "Organized religion is a cultural barrier to full equality for men and women." She is the author of Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life Without Religion.  Her website is The Faithless Feminist.  Rabbi Brian calls himself "a modern-day rabbi with John Lennon’s inclusivity and a Blues Brothers mission." He lives in Portland and does most of his work on-line at Religion Outside the Box.  --- Karen L. Garst has a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in French. She obtained her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She moved to Oregon in 1980 to serve as field representative of the Oregon Federation of Teachers. In 1988 she was selected to serve as the executive director of the Oregon Community College Association and in 1996 as the executive director of the Oregon State Bar. She retired from that position in 2008. She is married and lives in Oregon. -- Born and raised on the small island of Manhattan, Rabbi Brian grew up exceedingly rational. He thought he was going to be a math major and then an architect. Asking many ‘why’s led him to rabbinical school where he continued to struggle with the answers he received. In 2000, he left mainstream, organized, denominational religion to pursue religion-outside-the-box ( ROTB.org). In 2007 he took up working full-time as a mathematics (and life lesson) instructor where he recovered his minister’s heart. In 2015 Rabbi Brian followed his calling to nourish spiritual-religious hunger full time – no matter people’s theology, religious background, or lack of either. He lives in Portand, Oregon with his family. October 21, 2015 After a week off while we ramped up for the new site, we’re back at World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan in Portand for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. With me is bassist/composer Jaime Leopold. You may know him from his current group Short Stories. If you’re real good, you know him from the legendary Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Jaime was on the scene in San Francisco for all those hippie hijinks…he knew Neal Cassady, Kesey, and nearly all of the other luminaries. It was Cassady who once said, "“We are actually fourth dimensional beings in a third dimensional body inhabiting a second dimensional world!” Jaime even spent a little time in the pokey back then for helping distribute what we in Oregon can now buy in stores. He quit music for a long time, but is back on the scene. Stories? He’s got them.

He's also been known to play ahead of the curve (tablets and smartphones) and see the trends and revolutions coming, albeit sometimes he gets there too early. He also sees things differently and has been at the forefront of early and seed stage impact focused support and investing and for years. He's a serial tech entrepreneur turned impact investor and ecosystem builder. His company, Fledge, is an innovative model for all forms of accelerator and incubator programs, and are one with a model that allow companies to continue to receive support from the accelerator once their cohort graduates. Fledge's innovative for-profit investment thesis allows companies to focus on the most important metric to their success - getting customers - while using a small portion of their revenues to gradually buy back equity from its investors. This models provides investors with a 4x return on their investment, and makes the ROI comparable to tech investing. With the launch of Aviary, Luni has now built three major required pieces of a startup ecosystem. A pre-accelerator, an incubator/accelerator program, and now a seed stage impact investing fund. In this episode, Luni will give you the blueprint for how you can join him and start building an impact focused startup support ecosystem in your city.   Admittedly Michael “Luni” Libes is one of the biggest reasons for my entry into the field of impact investing. He was an early influence when I first got involved in the space back in Seattle, and was one of the people that gave me the opportunity to start learning and developing my understanding of impact investing and conducting due diligence on social good startups. It is because of all of these reasons that I am so excited to bring you this episode and share with you a glimpse into how seed stage impact investors see the world of social enterprise and startups.
