Professor David Nutt, a renowned Neuropsychopharmacologist, specializes in researching the effects of drugs on the brain, particularly in relation to conditions like addiction, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. As the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of the non-profit DrugScience and the head of the Center for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, Professor Nutt is a leading advocate for evidence-based drug policies and innovative approaches to mental health treatment. In the episode, Professor Nutt explains his role as a neuropsychopharmacologist, emphasizing the study of how drugs affect brain function and mental health. He shares his extensive experience in prescribing medications and exploring brain mechanisms through pharmacology. Professor Nutt highlights the importance of neurotransmitters in brain communication and how drugs can mimic or block these chemicals to treat mental illnesses. He reflects on his influential 2010 Lancet paper, which evaluated the harms of various drugs and controversially concluded that alcohol was the most harmful substance overall in the UK. This finding has been replicated in studies across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, reinforcing the need for policies that address both personal and social harms caused by alcohol. The discussion also covers Prof. Nutt's efforts to develop synthetic alcohol, aiming to provide the relaxing effects of traditional alcohol without the associated health risks and social harms. He emphasizes the potential of these alternatives to reduce alcohol-related deaths and improve public health. Additionally, Prof. Nutt delves into the use of psychedelics like psilocybin for treating mental health disorders, explaining how these substances can reset brain function and offer long-lasting relief from conditions like depression. He contrasts this with traditional antidepressants, which often need to be taken continuously and can have significant side effects.Professor David Nutt's work highlights the transformative potential of science and innovation in addressing some of the most pressing issues in mental health and drug policy. By advocating for evidence-based approaches and exploring new treatments like synthetic alcohol and psychedelics, Nutt aims to reduce the societal and personal harms caused by substance abuse and mental illness. His insights underscore the importance of continued research and the adoption of policies that prioritize scientific evidence over political expediency, ultimately fostering a healthier and more informed society. Today we're wrapping up our podcast year with 5 impactful conversations from 2023. This year has been an incredible journey learning more about food and medicine and I hope you've found the lessons from the podcast as fascinating as I have!First off I share a snippet from my conversation with Dr Robert Lustig (#209 Why a calorie is not a calorie) about whether you can you be a sugar aholic? Robert's passion for this subject is palpable, and perhaps after hearing Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, talk on the subject today, you might be inclined to review your sugar intake yourself? The realisation of our dropping attention spans is worrying. You don't have to ask many people in your network to realise that this phenomenon is not unique. This conversation I had with Johann Hari (#193 Why you can't focus) encouraged me to inject mind wandering into my daily routine.Jessie Inchauspé is now a global phenomena and has influenced millions of people to become more conscious about the impact of sugar spikes on their wellbeing. In this snippet (#144 Flatten Your Glucose Levels), we focus on Jessie's backstory and what led her to pursue a career in science and the revelation of how her own glucose rollercoasters were affecting her health.Professor David Nutt is at the forefront of psychedelic research and on this podcast (#211 Psychedelics and the new era of Psychiatry) he breaks down what these molecules are, the research behind them and why he believes they have great promise for mental health and beyond. And lastly, but by no means least, my conversation with Sheila Dillon (#156 The Power of Food). Sheila's realisation around food and medicine, touching on her own experience of cancer, her sisters and the phenomenal impact of the food programme to spark ideas and challenge dogma in our crazy complicated world of food.

I can't help but love it when some people f*ck with authority, especially when they are on the right side of history. Prof. David Nutt is one of those people. David is currently the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology and director of the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit in the Division of Brain Sciences. He is also the Chair of DrugScience (formally the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD)) and President of the European Brain Council. But he's probably best known for up-ending everything we were taught about drugs in high school after he authored a study published in the Lancet that showed, through a multi-criteria analysis, that things like cannabis, psilocybin and LSD weren't nearly as harmful to people as was our then (and still, frankly) vice, alcohol. And we should all be grateful he did because in many ways that was a pivotal moment for the psychedelic renaissance and the start of a healthy reexamination of psychoactive compounds in our society. His recent book, Psychedelics: The Revolutionary Drugs That Could Change Your Life - a Guide From the Expert, was published in June 2023 and is now available for pre-order in Canada and the US. In this episode, Joe interviews Imran Khan: Executive Director of the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. Khan shares his journey into the world of science and policymaking, beginning with science journalism and inspired by David Nutt's famous ‘Equicy' paper and subsequent firing for telling the truth. Realizing how strong the disconnect was between political and science worlds, his goal became to represent science when it comes under attack; using campaigning, lobbying, advocacy work, etc., and essentially becoming a translator between science and society – bringing these overly complicated concepts down to a level every day culture can understand. At UC Berkeley, he's focusing on research, training scientists to be better communicators, educating the public on the benefits of psychedelics, and trying to make research more trustworthy. He discusses the word “science” and how it's used to describe lots of things; the hard problem of consciousness; color constancy, perception, and the influence of priors; the risk of abuse in all therapies; trust and why people don't always “trust the science”; the risks of putting too much faith in experience insights; the word “sacred”; and more. He concludes by discussing the findings of the first UC Berkeley psychedelic survey, which revealed public sentiments and attitudes towards psychedelics, and, while mostly positive, truly proved the need for people like Khan to be out there educating the public. So yes, it is ubiquitous, but there is a front runner.   Check out the full list and see where your state ranks: Alcohol Consumption by State   In 2012 British researcher Dr. David Nutt was tasked by the government to put harm scores on 20 of the world's most harmful drug. He is 51 and lives in a small town in Indiana. Chad is married, and they have three children. He works for the government. He enjoys talking recovery, umpiring softball, and cycling.   Chad's parents divorced when he was young. He never felt like he fit in at either of his parents' homes and was a people pleaser doing whatever he could to fit in. Chad moved in with his dad when he was 13. After an ankle injury he was sidelined from sports, and he ended up finding a new group of friends that dabbled in drugs and alcohol. He says he struggled through high school and was looking at the military instead of going to college. He was looking forward to having some structure that he didn't feel he had growing up between two households.   After graduating, Chad spent the summer partying and started basic training in August. He was sent to Germany after more training, and they drank a lot there. He started to notice that he needed to drink just to feel normal. He ended up leaving after one deployment and realized the military wasn't for him.   Chad left the military and went into construction work. He and his wife hadn't married yet, but she was pregnant, which was frowned upon by her family. Four years after having their daughter they got married and while they got a house together and continued to grow the family, Chad drank to deal with his stressors. It got to the point where Chad couldn't do anything without a drink in his hand. He says drinking took a front seat to everything else. On days when he could not drink, he was starting to have symptoms of withdrawal. He began to hide alcohol and his tolerance grew.   After a bad blackout and confrontation with his wife, he felt terrible and realized that he needed help. His wife encouraged him to seek inpatient treatment which is what Chad was hoping for. With his wife's support he found a rehab that helped him a lot. He was able to talk to therapists and realize that he wasn't alone. After 30 days in rehab, Chad started AA, started reading more books about recovery and has found Zoom meetings and listening to the RE podcast very helpful.   Chad's plan for recovery moving forward: Dig deeper into his recovery and be of service.   Chad's parting piece of guidance: A life worth living can be found in sobriety. Did you know that alcohol works on the GABA system? Such intricate mechanisms and their implications for brain research are the focus of our insightful conversation with David Nutt. A pioneer in the field of psychopharmacology, David's groundbreaking work opens up intriguing possibilities for treating disorders like addiction, depression, and anxiety. We walk through David's journey, from his surprising discoveries to the complex tensions he navigated when making policy suggestions to reduce alcohol's harms. Our candid chat with David takes us down memory lane to when he chaired the Home Office Advisory Council's scientific committee and the palpable shift in his life. We delve into the dichotomy of alcohol, seen as one of the most harmful drugs, yet legal, and the ripple effects of alcohol advertising on underage drinking. Pioneering research by Lachmayr and Jürgen Rehm is put under the microscope as we explore the startling link between alcohol and at least seven types of cancer, with an added focus on cirrhosis of the liver. The conversation takes a thrilling turn as we dissect David's efforts in developing Arca-Rell, a promising alcohol-free alternative. In the midst of discussing the nuances of alcohol and potential treatments, we take a deep dive into an emerging trend - the therapeutic use of psychedelics. From their role in anti-war protests to their potential in lifting lifelong depression, we navigate the complex terrain of psychedelics. Join us as David leaves us with invaluable insights from his book, podcast, and charity work. Strap in for a riveting journey through the enthralling world of psychopharmacology. Psychedelics have been stigmatised and criminalised for over 50 years, but David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology and a leading worldwide authority on drugs, feels we're on the cusp of a major revolution in psychiatric medicine and neuroscience that could see psychedelics being used to treat mental health conditions. In this chat with Fearne, David explains the difference between the brain and the mind, and how psychedelics switch the latter off so the former can heal and lay down new thinking patterns. They discuss the potential therapeutic purposes of these drugs for conditions including PTSD, addiction, anxiety, and eating disorders. David's new book, Psychedelics, has recently been published by Yellow Kite and is available as a hardback, ebook and audio book. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Can neuroscience explain what happens to the brain on psychedelics? And even if we map the brain while it's tripping, does that tell us why these experiences can be so transformative?  We'll talk with some of the pioneers in psychedelic research — from Amanda Feilding's boundary-busting work to Robin Carhart-Harris' theory of the "entropic brain." Also, renowned neuroscientist Christof Koch goes down the rabbit hole on 5-MeO-DMT, also known as toad venom.   Original Air Date: July 15, 2023 Interviews In This Hour: Exploring consciousness on toad venom — The godmother of the European psychedelic revival — How therapeutic psilocybin could help heal long-buried trauma — Magic mushrooms and the 'entropic brain' Guests: Christof Koch, Amanda Feilding, David Nutt, Robin Carhart-Harris Never want to miss an episode? Subscribe to the podcast. Alcohol is the most widely used drug in the world, but it is also the cause of three million deaths each year and has been linked to many other long-term illnesses. In addition, the loss of productivity due to hangovers has an outsized impact on some economies. People still want to have a good time, though, and innovators are dreaming up ways to enjoy the effects of alcohol, without the costs.Jason Hosken, our producer, visits Brixton Brewery to speak to co-founders Jez Galaun and Xochitl Benjamin about the rise of alcohol-free beer. Natasha Loder, The Economist's health editor, investigates the herbal drinks that claim to mimic the effects of alcohol. Plus, David Nutt, a professor at Imperial College London explains how alcohol affects the brain and why his synthetic alcohol could reduce excessive drinking and end hangovers forever. Dr. Suresh Muthukumaraswamy — LSD Microdosing, Classical Psychedelics vs. Ketamine, Science and Speed in New Zealand, Placebo Options, and The Infinite Possibilities of Studying Mind-Altering CompoundsDr. Suresh Muthukumaraswamy completed his PhD in Psychology at the University of Auckland in 2005 after which he joined the newly established Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre as a postdoctoral fellow. While at Cardiff, he started research work with psychedelics in 2011 in collaboration with Professor David Nutt and Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris investigating the neuroimaging correlates of the psychedelic drugs psilocybin and LSD. In 2014, Suresh received a prestigious Rutherford Discovery Fellowship and returned to the University of Auckland where he works in the School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and leads the Auckland Neuropsychopharmacology Research Group.Suresh's main research interests are in understanding how therapies alter brain function and behavior and in testing methodologies to measure these changes in both healthy individuals and patient groups — particularly in depressed patients. At the University of Auckland, he has conducted clinical trials in depressed patients involving ketamine, scopolamine, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. He has received several Health Research Council of New Zealand research grants to support this work, including a grant to investigate the effects of microdoses of LSD on brain and cognitive function. Suresh has published 117 papers, with his work receiving 8000+ citations. This special episode of the podcast is a live recording from an event hosted by the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF). EHF began in 2016 as a pilot immigration program and has matured into a fellowship of more than 500 technologists, creatives, investors, entrepreneurs, educators, and systems designers, committed to New Zealand as a base camp for global impact. From more than 50 different nationalities, including New Zealand, fellows span a range of high-value sectors: media, education, cleantech, venture capital, and mental health initiatives/research just to name a few.EHF and its fellows aim to make a meaningful impact in New Zealand/Aotearoa with projects that often have global applications. Please enjoy!*For show notes and past guests on The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast.For deals from sponsors of The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast-sponsorsSign up for Tim's email newsletter (5-Bullet Friday) at tim.blog/friday.For transcripts of episodes, go to tim.blog/transcripts.Discover Tim's books: tim.blog/books.Follow Tim:Twitter: twitter.com/tferriss Instagram: instagram.com/timferrissYouTube: youtube.com/timferrissFacebook: facebook.com/timferriss LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/timferrissPast guests on The Tim Ferriss Show include Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Jackman, Dr. Jane Goodall, LeBron James, Kevin Hart, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jamie Foxx, Matthew McConaughey, Esther Perel, Elizabeth Gilbert, Terry Crews, Sia, Yuval Noah Harari, Malcolm Gladwell, Madeleine Albright, Cheryl Strayed, Jim Collins, Mary Karr, Maria Popova, Sam Harris, Michael Phelps, Bob Iger, Edward Norton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Neil Strauss, Ken Burns, Maria Sharapova, Marc Andreessen, Neil Gaiman, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Jocko Willink, Daniel Ek, Kelly Slater, Dr. Peter Attia, Seth Godin, Howard Marks, Dr. Brené Brown, Eric Schmidt, Michael Lewis, Joe Gebbia, Michael Pollan, Dr. Jordan Peterson, Vince Vaughn, Brian Koppelman, Ramit Sethi, Dax Shepard, Tony Robbins, Jim Dethmer, Dan Harris, Ray Dalio, Naval Ravikant, Vitalik Buterin, Elizabeth Lesser, Amanda Palmer, Katie Haun, Sir Richard Branson, Chuck Palahniuk, Arianna Huffington, Reid Hoffman, Bill Burr, Whitney Cummings, Rick Rubin, Dr. Vivek Murthy, Darren Aronofsky, and many more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
