ABOUT THE EPISODE:Are Islam and Christianity separated brothers, mortal enemies, or something in between? History tells the story.SponsorThis month, we're talking about how Christians engage with Islam, a conversation Southern Seminary has taken seriously for a long time. As President Al Mohler has put it, you can't prepare a minister for today's world without reckoning with Islam. That conviction is why Southern now offers a PhD in Islamic Studies, and why it's home to the Jenkins Center, a team devoted to helping pastors, missionaries, and everyday believers reach their Muslim neighbors with the gospel. To find resources and learn more about degrees, visit sbts.edu/islamicstudies. And be sure to listen to our interview with Dr Ayman Ibrahim, who is the head of the Jenkins Center.Resources to Click“Islam and Christianity: A Brief History” – Tony Costa“Does the Bible Predict the Coming of Muhammad?” – Tony Costa“Jesus in Islam” – Tony Costa“Does the Qur'an Really Deny That Jesus was Crucified an Died on the Cross? In this profound episode of School of Divine Mysteries, the Mahdi Aba Al-Sadiq explores the hidden spiritual realities behind prophecy, testing, and human destiny, joined in conversation by his disciple Tiffany. This episode delves into the forgotten covenant of the souls, the world before creation, and why this physical life is not a first test—but a reenactment of an ancient one. Through deep Qur'anic insights, prophetic narrations, and esoteric knowledge, the discussion uncovers how inner belief and disbelief manifest across lifetimes, why divine tests repeat, and how free will, destiny, and spiritual purification truly work. The conversation also examines envy as the root of spiritual downfall, the unseen burden of divine authority, and why even prophets and messengers were tested with humility and self-knowledge. Using powerful symbolism, timeless myths, and sacred history, this episode challenges common assumptions about righteousness, leadership, and what it truly means to be chosen by God. Viewers are invited to reflect on envy, obedience, reincarnation, the Rajʿah (Return), and the mercy embedded in divine justice—making this episode essential viewing for anyone seeking deeper understanding of Islamic mysticism, the Ahlul Bayt, and the spiritual mission of the Mahdi in our time.

Bliss in Triple Rhythm–A Toolbox for Poets: Nine Ways to Shape A Word Song: Shown in 300 Original Poems by Martin Bidney https://www.amazon.com/Bliss-Triple-Rhythm-Toolbox-Poets/dp/1987402561 Mmartinbidney.org This book of word songs in unexpected melodic patterns will surprise you by its equally unusual liveliness. I’m so eager to begin singing for you that, as you noticed, I’ve already written a prefatory poem in one of the varied kinds of triple rhythm units I’ll be illustrating (la LA la; weak STRONG weak; one TWO three; x/x). The strangest thing I’ll be doing in my collection is to bring about a resurrection of ancient stanza patterns embodying the musical structures I love. The uncustomary triple-rhythm stanza forms richly displayed will acquire a real if unlikely novelty by presenting tools so extremely old. About the author Martin Bidney, Professor Emeritus at Binghamton University (NY), writes poetry books that are dialogues. In “Shakespair” he converses in Shakespearean sonnets with the 154 that the bisexual Bard himself wrote in the 1590s about his boyfriend and girlfriend. In “A Unifying Light” Martin converses with Qur’anic passages on the topic of Jews and Christians in the Qur’an and the Islamic virtues they embody. “East-West Poetry” shows Martin replying, in poems, to passages from both the Qur’an and Rumi. “Poems of Wine and Tavern Romance” offers 103 dialogues between Martin and Hafiz, the 14th century Persian pub poet he translates, a Muslim Sufi who was bisexual, like Shakespeare, and whom Germany’s greatest poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, called his “twin” brother! (Martin translates Hafiz from the same version Goethe used.) In fact, Martin has also translated Goethe’s own “West-East Divan” (divan means “collection”) and wrote conversational reply poems to all of Goethe’s 240 lyrics. Martin’s dialogue book with the greatest Polish poet, Adam Mickiewicz, contains, on facing pages, the sonnets he wrote in response to the “Crimean Sonnets” he translated from Polish. In “Like a Fine Rug of Erivan” he translates 39 Pushkin poems from Russian and recites them on a CD. His wide-ranging fascination with revelatory writing stems from “Patterns of Epiphany,” where Martin pioneered a method of analysis he has since applied to over 20 authors.

Fundamental to Islamic thought is the idea that there is a way that human beings simply are, by nature or creation. This concept is called fiṭra. In The Politics of Islamic Ethics: Hierarchy and Human Nature in the Philosophical Tradition (Cambridge UP, 2025), rooting her investigation in two central passages in the Qur'an and hadith literature, where it is asserted that God created human beings in a certain way, the author moves beyond discussion of the usual figures who have commented on those texts to look instead at a group of classical Islamic philosophers rarely discussed in conjunction with ethical matters. Tracing the development of fiṭra through this overlooked strand of medieval thinking, von Doetinchem de Rande uses fiṭra as an entrée to wider topics in Islamic ethics. She shows that the notion of fiṭra articulated by al-Fārābī, Ibn Bājja, Ibn Ṭufayl, and Ibn Rushd highlights important issues about organizational hierarchies of human nature. In Episode 584 of the Bible as Literature Podcast, Fr. Marc Boulos explores Luke 9:10 through the Semitic root ס־פ־ר / س־ف־ر (samek-fe-reš / sīn-fāʾ-rāʾ), uncovering a rich biblical ecology of sending, hearing, obeying, recounting, and carrying the word of God.Beginning with a sharp critique of Greek epistemology and the modern assumption that knowledge originates in the human mind, Fr. Marc argues that Scripture presents a radically different orientation. The fool who says "there is no God" is not merely the unbeliever, but the one who enthrones himself in the seat of judgment, making human reason the source of truth. In contrast, the biblical witness portrays humanity not as the author of knowledge but as its recipient, addressed and commanded by God.Tracing the root ס־פ־ר across the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Qurʾan, Fr. Marc shows how the apostles' "report" in Luke 9:10 is far more than a missionary debrief. Their recounting belongs to the same scriptural pattern found in Abraham's slave, Moses, Ezekiel, Joseph, and the prophets: the slave is sent, encounters God's action, and returns to recount what God has done. The true witness does not testify to his own experience but hands on the command and deed of the Lord.Along the way, Fr. Marc explores the connections between journey (safar), scroll (sefer), scribe (sofer), unveiling, dreams, hearing and obedience (ש־מ־ע / س־م־ع), and the contrast between faithful slaves who carry God's word and false prophets who recount only the dreams of their own hearts. The episode culminates in a powerful reading of Luke 9:10 in which the apostles appear not as religious entrepreneurs reporting their accomplishments, but as slaves who have been found, sent, instructed, and returned to hand back the word they received. The question is not what a person knows, but which way he is turned. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In this talk, the sālik — the spiritual seeker — is reminded of the importance of remaining consistent in their dhikr regimen. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman explains that the one who abandons dhikr is like a person who neglects their cultivated field. Just as a field requires continual care in order to flourish and bear fruit, the seeker must likewise strive in remembrance if they desire a sound heart constantly occupied with the remembrance of their Lord. For some servants, Allah opens for them the doors of Paradise in this world, and this occurs when their hearts find joy and sweetness in His remembrance — through recitation of the Qur'an, murāqabah, and other acts of devotion. The delight they experience is so profound that one of the righteous is reported to have said: “If kings knew the happiness and joy we experience in our hearts, they would fight us for it with their swords.”

Shaykh Abdur-Rahman (hafizahullah) begins by mentioning the Qur'anic verse in which Allah describes the servants upon whom He sends His peace and mercy. In this verse from Surat al-Baqarah, Allah explains that when calamity befalls them, they say: “Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.” He then explains that the seeker should recognise the nature of this worldly life: it is inevitable that one will experience hardship and trial. Believers, in particular, will be tested in their wealth, health, and lives. He further advises that remembering death and reflecting upon the rewards and blessings Allah has prepared for the believers in the Hereafter helps cultivate patience and steadfastness in times of loss and calamity. As a result, even amid worldly hardship, the seeker's heart can remain tranquil and at peace.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir describes Surah An-Naml (The Ant, Qur'an 27) as a chapter that emphasizes Allah's wisdom, power, and guidance through the stories of prophets such as Musa (Moses), Sulayman (Solomon), and Salih. A central focus is the story of Prophet Sulayman understanding the speech of the ant and his interactions with the Queen of Sheba, showing gratitude, justice, and submission to Allah. The surah also warns against arrogance and disbelief while encouraging reflection on the signs of creation and the truth of the Hereafter. This video series is a curated collection of reflections and summaries drawn from the 30 Days with the Qur'an series, where each Juz was explored over the month of Ramadan. While not a full tafsir, these concise and heartfelt talks aim to highlight key themes and insights from each Surah to inspire a deeper connection with the Qur'an. In this series, we've taken those reflections and focused them surah by surah, offering a dedicated video for each chapter of the Qur'an. The goal is to spark curiosity, build motivation, and encourage further study of the Qur'an in a manageable, engaging format. Whether you're revisiting familiar Surahs or exploring new ones, these summaries are here to help you pause, reflect, and fall in love with the Qur'an all over again. Anyone familiar with Imam Ghazali's works will recognise the immense influence this book had on him... We owe a great debt to Dr Yasien Mohamed for bringing this exceptional work into English... With excellent knowledge of Arabic and English, coupled with a serious background in ethics, he provides us with a translation that works well and conveys the contents of the Imam's works." No one will be able to ignore the summons. No one will be able to resist, delay, negotiate, or escape. As the Qur'an describes humanity following the caller without deviation, Dalia and Imam Magid explore what it means to live in a world where we often ignore Allah's call, yet are heading toward a day when responding will no longer be optional. They reflect on the complete silence of that gathering, the collapse of worldly status, and the profound significance of Allah describing Himself as Ar-Rahman in a scene of overwhelming judgment and power. In this episode, you will learn:

Among the issues addressed in the book are blasphemy laws that restrict free speech in dozens of countries—with Pakistan often regarded as home to some of the most troubling cases.Akyol will discuss the issue with two Pakistani scholars: Husnul Amin, author of the book's chapter on blasphemy, and Muhammad Khalid Masud, the book's academic adviser and a distinguished scholar of Islamic law and theology. The three will also explore how a reformist reading of the Qur'an and other Islamic sources can help build a case against blasphemy laws. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, Fr. Marc Boulos explores the profound connection between the Qurʾanic account of Adam as khalīfa (خليفة), Paul's teaching on κοινωνία (koinonia), the biblical function of stewardship, and Luke 9:7–9, where Herod is troubled by reports concerning Jesus. Why is Herod perplexed? Why does Scripture repeatedly shift attention away from the identity of the messenger and back toward the command of the One who sent him?Drawing on the Qurʾan, the Hebrew Bible, and the New Testament, Fr. Marc argues that the central conflict in Scripture is not ignorance but rebellion. Like Iblīs before Adam, Herod hears the command but refuses to bow. He seeks understanding through sight, observation, and human judgment, while Scripture consistently calls human beings to hear, obey, and cross. The episode also examines the fundamental conflict between the biblical framework and the Greek philosophical tradition. Plato teaches that man escapes the cave through contemplation and attains truth through a clearer vision of reality. Aristotle locates perfection in the Unmoved Mover, the highest principle understood through intellectual contemplation. In both cases, salvation is associated with sight, understanding, and ascent.Scripture presents the opposite movement. Abraham does not contemplate, he crosses. Israel does not speculate, it crosses the sea. Elijah does not discover truth within the cave, he leaves the cave under command. The prophets are not enlightened by self-reflection but confronted by the word of the Most High. The biblical problem is therefore not lack of knowledge but refusal to submit. The obstacle is not ignorance but rebellion.Herod's διαπορία (diaporia), his inability to find a way through, becomes the literary embodiment of this conflict. He seeks a passage through observation, evidence, and human reasoning, yet the only crossing available is obedience. Like Iblīs before Adam, he refuses to bow before a command that God has placed into the hands of another. Thus Luke's Gospel and the Qurʾanic account of Adam converge on the same question:Will you submit to the One who sent the messenger? The messenger may disappear. The steward may pass away. The shepherd may fall. But the command of the Most High continues to cross the Arabah. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Have you ever thought of someone and had them appear moments later? Or found something beautiful growing exactly where something painful once was? In today's episode I explore synchronicity through an Islamic and spiritual lens, the idea that nothing happens by accident, that our souls are part of an invisible network of connection, and that the moments we tend to brush off as coincidence might actually be something far more intentional. Drawing on a beautiful Sufi teaching about the soul as the real internet and the Qur'anic understanding that all of humanity is deeply, spiritually interconnected, I look at what these everyday signs are really pointing to. From a spontaneous visit that solved a car-washing problem, to a rose blooming  from a place of grief, today's episode is an invitation to slow down, pay attention and trust in divine arrangement. Whether you're Muslim, spiritual, or simply someone who has experienced one too many coincidences to keep dismissing them, this one is for you. With peace and love always, Amber xoxo

I don't really follow football but this past week there seemed to be a lot of it in the news. One of the most contentious stories has been that of Southampton who admitted to spying on their opponents training sessions. They've now lost their appeal against expulsion from the Championship play-offs, which they described as `manifestly disproportionate.' For many of the fans who are hurt it may seem like an unfair and collective punishment. But while the fallout has been enormous, the issue isn't really about the consequences for breaking a rule. Football survives mistakes, controversy and questionable refereeing decisions every week. What it can't survive is the erosion of trust. Once clubs begin believing covert spying and deception are acceptable routes to competitive advantage, the integrity of the sport itself starts to erode. Competition in all areas of life must still have moral boundaries because if winning becomes the only value left, then every other principle gradually becomes negotiable. Whether in football, politics business or our relationships, a culture obsessed purely with outcomes eventually loses the moral language needed to restrain itself. Success begins to justify deception and eventually people no longer even recognise dishonesty because it has become so normalised by success. But if restraint is important so is the principle of proportionality. The Qur'an says, ` we have made you a middle nation' a verse which inspired Muslim thinkers to regard balance and equilibrium as a spiritual act. A small wound shouldn't become a lifelong bitterness, a mistake shouldn't lead to total exile and justice should always be distinguishable from revenge. This isn't weakness, its God consciousness contained in the sacred words, `By justice, the heavens and the earth endure.' When so much of our culture encourages us towards extremes, cutting people off, letting disagreement turn to dehumanising, and destroying peoples reputations, the courage to remain fair even when you're hurting or angry is a difficult but necessary virtue. On losing their appeal Southampton issued a statement apologising to their fans and supporters stating that `trust now needs to be rebuilt' and that they were determined to act with humility and `put things right.” And in the end that is all any of us can hope to do whether in sport or in life in general. All of us carry a relationship we could mend, a trust we can uphold, and while its not always easy, perhaps one of the quietest forms of spiritual maturity is the ability to put something right before time makes the repair impossible.

In this episode of The Bible as Literature, Fr. Marc Boulos delivers a powerful Mother's Day homily and biblical reflection on the meaning of Baal, husbandry, empire, and the anti-imperial function of scripture. Beginning with the Semitic root ב־ע־ל / ب־ع־ل (b-ʿ-l), Fr. Marc explains how the biblical attack is not against the husband or father, but against the corruption of husbandry into domination, ownership, kingship, and institutional power, what he calls “Baalism.”Drawing on examples from Roman slavery, Baalbek, St. George, Ezekiel, Luke 9, Isaiah, Nahum, and the Qur'an, this episode explores how scripture dismantles empire and restores humanity to its proper place as caretaker of the land rather than master over it. Fr. Marc argues that the earth functions as mother, not as a goddess, and that Elohim alone is Father, King, and Lord. The second half of the episode turns to Luke 9:6 and the Greek verbs διέρχομαι, εὐαγγελίζω, and θεραπεύω, showing how the apostles do not possess healing as power, but cross through the land as slaves bearing witness to the coming judgment and kingdom of God. Through Hebrew and Arabic lexical correspondences, Fr. Marc demonstrates how biblical language functions not as abstract philosophy, but as enacted decree. This episode challenges modern assumptions about power, property, fatherhood, rights, religion, and institutional life, while presenting scripture as an ancient anti-imperial witness against tyranny and domination.Luke 9:6Εξερχόμενοι διήρχοντο κατὰ τὰς κώμας εὐαγγελιζόμενοι καὶ θεραπεύοντες πανταχοῦ“Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and serving everywhere.” ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Anyone familiar with Imam Ghazali's works will recognise the immense influence this book had on him... We owe a great debt to Dr Yasien Mohamed for bringing this exceptional work into English... There are Names of Allah that don't just inform you… They dismantle everything you thought you understood about existence. This episode centres on two of the greatest: Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyoom - names many scholars held to be from the greatest names of Allah, 'Azza wa Jalla. Everything you see is marked by a beginning, a deficiency, an end, or weakness. But what of the One whose life was never preceded nor is His life touched by death, sleep, or any deficiency? The One who needs nothing… yet everything is sustained by Him. These names don't just describe Allah - they establish why He alone is worthy of worship, reliance, and Du'aa. And hidden within them is a powerful reality… one that transforms how distress, hardship, and need are answered. The question is - are you willing to truly understand them and find in your life a sudden burst of Tawakkul like never before?  00:00 - Precap & Introduction 01:35 - Occurrences of "Al-Hayy" & "Al-Qayyoom" in the Qur'an 03:20 - Al-Hayy 06:53 - Why All of Allah's Attributes Return to "Al-Hayy" 08:57 - Different Things People Worship and Their Reality 12:35 - Al-Qayyoom 19:02 - The Vast Meanings of "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyoom" 20:35 - Is "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyoom" Allah's Greatest Name? 22:32 - Seeking Relief Through "Ya Hayy Ya Qayyoom" 25:35 - Only the Perfectly Living Can Perfectly Sustain 27:29 - Allah Does Only What Befits His Majesty 30:46 - Evidence for "Ya Hayy Ya Qayyoom" in Du'aa 31:43 - The Distinction Between Names and Attributes in Du'aa 33:22 - Submission and Lowliness Before "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyoom" 34:28 - Acting Upon the Meanings of "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyoom" 40:16 - The Meaning of "وَبِكَ خَاصَمْتُ"  Sign up now to AMAU Academy: https://www.amauacademy.com/ AMAU Academy: https://www.amauacademy.com/ AMAU Junior: https://amaujunior.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amauofficial/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/AMAU Telegram: https://t.me/amauofficial YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/AMAUofficial Twitter: https://twitter.com/AMAUofficial iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/al-madrasatu-al-umariyyah/id1524526782 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/08NJC1pIA0maaF6aKqZL4N Get in Touch: https://amau.org/getintouch BarakAllahu feekum. #AMAU #Allah #namesofallah #islamicknowledge #seekingknowledge

For the final ( for now ) episode in this hidden beings series, we're entering one of the strangest, most serious, and most misunderstood parts of the Islamic unseen: the djinn. Not just genies or horror-movie demons. Definitely not just folklore. In Islam, the djinn are hidden beings created from smokeless fire. They hear revelation. They believe and disbelieve. They are morally accountable. They appear in the Qur'an, in hadith, in family stories, in dreams, in fear, in thresholds, and sometimes in the strange feeling that the room is not as empty as it looks. This episode explores the djinn through Islamic tradition, Qur'anic cosmology, the qareen, pre-Islamic Arabian poetry, Pakistani and South Asian folklore, possession narratives, sleep paralysis, mental health, and the wider Idiot Mystic hidden beings series.Mothman was modern high strangeness.Fairies were the hidden people.Daimons were the strange inner companions.Shedim and demons brought us into Jewish and Christian spirit worlds. And now, the djinn bring us into the Islamic unseen. The question at the center of this episode is simple:What does it mean to live in a world where unseen intelligence is not an exception, but part of the structure of reality?Welcome to Idiot Mystic.Join the Idiot Mystic Discord:https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmMFollow Idiot Mystic:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idiotmysticTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@idiotmysticYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@idiotmysticWebsite: https://idiotmystic.comListen on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/idiotmystic

Samiha Rahman's Black Muslim Freedom Dreams: Islamic Education, Pan-Africanism, and Collective Care (New York University Press, 2026) follows three generations of Black American Muslims as they pursue education through the Tijani Sufi order in Medina Baye, Senegal, outside the anti-Black and anti-Muslim racism of the United States. This deeply rich ethnographic book captures the transatlantic flows of Black American religious life through the prism of Black mothers and othermothers (as conceptualized by Patricia Hill Collins “motherwork”) and the young people whose lives are transformed through the process. By focusing on the Islamic education offered by the Tijani Order, such as Qur'an education, we learn about the intricate networks of kin that step in to support the young Black Muslims who have migrated for schooling, highlighting the tangible realities of collective care and service that circulates within the Tijani Order. These registers of care and service are informed by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse, the Senegalese Islamic scholar, Sufi Shaykh, and pan-Africanist, whose teachings define these networks of education, organizing, and care work. The book then offers critical insights into the flow of one particular Sufi community between the United States and Senegal, and how dreams of better futures for Black Muslim youth and the liberatory goals of Pan-Africanism intersect to co-constitute a significant economy of collective care, Sufi service, and Islamic piety. This book will be of interest to anyone who works on education, Sufism, Black and African Islam and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. Islam is proliferating across the United States. This is due in part to immigration from other nations. According to ChatGPT, it's believed that between 55-60% of Muslims in the United States are immigrants. Around 1970, the number of mosques in the U.S. was estimated to be around 100. By the year 2000 that jumped to around 1200 mosques and by 2020 that jumped to around 2,800 mosques, a 25-fold increase since 1970. A broader inclusive estimate for 2026 put that number between 3,700 and 4,000 mosques and Islamic centers and growing. Could this be a sign of the Islamizing of America? To answer that question, Crosstalk welcomed back Usama Dakdok. Usama is founder of the Straight Way of Grace Ministry. He is the speaker on Revealing the Truth About Islam and founder of The Straight Way of Grace Ministry. Usama speaks fluent Arabic and has translated the Qur'an into English. He is the author of Exposing the Truth about the Qur'an, Exposing the Truth About Jihad and the booklets, The Violent Truth about Islam and The Straight Way to Eternal Life. There have been massive public relations campaigns put on using libraries across the country in special outreaches known as "Know Your Muslim Neighbor." Following up with that effort, the Council on American/Islamic Relations (CAIR) joined forces with the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations to promote what they call "National Open Mosque Day," which began this past Sunday. It's an attempt to open doors to the wider community as they invite people of all faiths and backgrounds to explore and learn about Islam. Listen as Usama communicates a timely warning about Islam!
