New Episode: The Power of Friendship In this episode, I read On Friendship by Khalil Gibran and sit down with my friend Sarah Daniels for a heartfelt conversation about what it truly means to be a friend. We explore the importance of boundaries in friendships, the value of being our own best friend, and how cultivating a strong relationship with ourselves allows us to build deeper, more meaningful connections with others. Friendship is not just about companionship—it's about growth, healing, and becoming the best versions of ourselves. Listen in as we share insights, stories, and reflections on the role of friendship in our lives. And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship. And he answered, saying: Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving. And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace     When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.” And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart; For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit. For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.     And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, we ring in the new year with 8-Bit Christmas. We can focus so much on the areas we feel behind, the areas of lack, that we miss the places where we are winning. As we enter the new year, instead of looking at what we want to accomplish, let's focus on who we want to become. When we do that, the what will follow the who. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What was the greatest gift you received as a kid? What was a gift you really wanted that you never got? Looking back over the year, where are you winning? What are you proud of? What have you accomplished? In the past year, what's not working? Where do you feel behind, missing out? What is lacking? What of these things do you have any control over? Where has your joy been choked out by the pressures to perform? What are some ways you can choose an act of defiance against the busyness you feel? Where do you feel the most pressure to perform, to be perfect? How do you invite God into your plans? Your work? Your marriage? Where is God thwarting you so that you can find more life in Him? Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, we talk about the 1982 movie Tron. We see how the relationship between the programs and the users is a reflection of the relationship between ourselves and our creator. The MCP becomes a distortion of who he was created to be by his search for knowledge and power. But when we have a relationship with our creator, and do the things we were designed to do, we experience a joy even in doing hard things. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. Questions In Tron, we see that programs rely on users for their existence. How does this parallel our dependence on a Creator for our existence and purpose? Discuss the concept of free will in Tron. How does it relate to the idea that God has given us the freedom to make choices in our lives? In the movie, programs are created by users and subsequently develop relationships, loyalty, and even rebellion towards their creators. How can this be seen as a reflection of our own complex relationship with God? The storyline in Tron explores themes of oppression and liberation, where the programs revolt against their oppressive Master Control Program. How does this parallel our own struggle with sin in rebellion to God? The underlying message in Tron encourages the notion that the programs hold significance beyond the virtual realm and deserve recognition and respect. How does this reflect our understanding of our own significance as creations of our Creator? Tron explores the idea of faith and trust between users and programs. How does this parallel our own need for faith and trust in our relationship with God, especially in times of uncertainty and adversity? How does Flynn's selflessness and sacrificial nature in "Tron" reflect Jesus Christ? How can we embody this in our own lives? Flynn represents hope and redemption within the virtual world. How does his unwavering belief in the good in others align with Jesus' teachings? How can we adopt this perspective? Flynn's humility and purpose mirror Jesus' humility, like when he washed his disciples' feet. We can learn from Flynn to cultivate humility and purpose in our own lives. Flynn's courage and determination in "Tron" echo Jesus' example of fearlessly opposing injustice. How can we draw inspiration from Flynn to stand up for what's right? Flynn's forgiveness towards betrayers reflects Jesus' teachings on reconciliation. How can we apply Flynn's forgiveness to our own relationships, extending grace to others? This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we head out on an adventure to discuss The Goonies. What's needed to live a great adventure?  Fellowship of misfits who somehow all fit together.  A sense of expectancy—“God, what do you have next for me?” Finally, a passion that refuses to take Troy's bucket, realizing the adventure is the treasure.  Goonies never say die—let's discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What was one of the first movies you saw in the theater? What adventures did you do as a kid? Who were your best friends as a child? If you have a talent or gift that you think is too weird and it's never going to be used, just give it over to God and He will use it. Our specific brand of strange is exactly what the world needs. But we can disqualify ourselves if we don't trust the calling we've been given. Victory or Death! Let's discover God's truth in this movie. Questions How do you feel stuck? What is your weird gift/talent? Who wins the Rogen award? Seth, Joe, or Alex? What is the necessary that you need to do today? What pressure do you face when you try to do everything? How does that feel? How do those around you respond? What comes to mind with the line, “Peace and prosperity brought with them boredom and monotony?” Where does your life feel monotonous and boring? What do you do to escape that feeling? What opportunities have you been offered that you turned down? Why did you do that? What regrets do you have about it? This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we are excited to have a woman join us to talk about one of her favorite movies, the original Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Biehn. We discuss the differences between Sarah Connors in this movie contrasted with her character in T2. And we break down how she is transformed from a naïve waitress into a confident warrior. Storms coming, so come with us if you want to live, and let's discover God's truth in this movie. About Sarah: Sarah Daniels works as a staff member of the Crossing LIFE Church in Windham, NH by day, and toils as an aspiring author by night. She's a movie nerd who's stuck in the 80s, and grew up with classics like The Last Starfighter, The Goonies, and The Terminator. She's currently funneling the life lessons she learned from them into a movie devotional and hosts monthly movie nights at her church to teach people how God can speak to us through movies and other aspects of pop culture. She's passionate about hearing the voice of God and encouraging people to break out of the Matrix and embrace their true identities as sons and daughters of God, and how to partner with God using their unique creative giftings, whatever those might be. Questions How do you respond when the storms are coming? Where do you feel naïve? Where do you feel confident? What does the enemy look like? How would you define him? What would it be like to live at peace with others? To live in a way that does not perceive people as the enemy? How do we tell the good guys from the bad guys? When is your response out of proportion to what is happening? Are your decisions governed by love or fear? How can you tell the difference? Do you believe God is disappointed in you? What if God isn't disappointed in you? What would that change? To dive into this content even more, visit our website: www.menatthemovies.com/podcast. ET MUST HEAR!

Qualcomm loves to make long, industry-changing bets. It’s why we created STEM engagement programs, like Thinkabit Labs, that encourage students to pursue STEM careers in the future. It’s also why we set up Qualcomm Ventures, our investment arm that supports dozens of up-and-coming tech companies that are changing the way the world connects. Earlier this summer, Qualcomm Ventures hosted its first annual Female Founders Summit, inviting ten female-led start-ups to compete for a chance to win $500K and the potential for additional funding and mentorship. The winning company was Blue Canoe Learning, which combines brain-based methodology, speech recognition, and AI in a mobile app to help non-native English speakers speak the language with confidence. In this episode, we caught up with a few of the summit’s attendees: Varsha Tagare, the managing director of Qualcomm Ventures; Susie Armstrong, the SVP of Engineering at Qualcomm; and Sarah Daniels, the CEO and co-founder of Blue Canoe Learning. We discussed their favorite parts of the Female Founders Summit and the importance of STEM when encouraging diversity in the tech industry.

The Graham Arrowsmith 60th Birthday Episode Co-host of The Next 100 Days Podcast has just had his 60th Birthday. We recorded this special episode on the day. The original intention was for Kevin Appleby and his wife Ruth to join Graham at a getaway venue right next to the beautiful Menai Straits in Wales. Events conspired and so we recorded the podcast with Kevin still in Northumberland. Graham invited his family to join him to discuss their lives. We hope you enjoy this little bit of self indulgence, and laugh along with Graham and his family. Kevin Calls This The FIFTY TEN Episode! Very funny, I must say! And it didn't take long before it all went horribly long (hopefully not on the podcast)! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Take-Fifty-10.mp4 Any tips for Graham on being 60, beyond "Graham eat less", will be welcomed on our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/thenext100days Graham was speaking from Telford House next to the Menai Straits. On this day in 1918, Allied forces launched a new attack on the Hindenburg line, and in Folkestone Adam is steaming towards the harbour. Written by Sarah Daniels Directed by Ciaran Bermingham Editor: Jessica Dromgoole Notes Home Front returns to a bruised, but optimistic Folkestone for its fifteenth and final season. Amongst hushed rumours of peace, our characters dream about a brighter, democratic future, whilst struggling to maintain morale after four years of a seemingly endless war which has seeped into every aspect of civilian life and drawn in everyone. Subtitled "Onward", Season 15 of Home Front is story-led by Katie Hims, with Sarah Daniels, Shaun McKenna and Sebastian Baczkiewicz completing the writing team. Onward is the troopship which goes up in flames on the first day, momentarily stopping soldiers from departing from Folkestone to the Western Front. It is also the Allies' movement towards a retreating German front; it is the tentative hopes of progress in a post-war Britain; it is the drive for a wounded community to find some kind of peace, however fragile.

On this day in 1918, the Times published plans for Alexandra Day, a project to sell pink roses to raise £1m, while in Ashburton, Cora Gidley sees her roses differently. Written by Lucy Catherine Directed by Jessica Dromgoole Notes The Home Front story returns to Devon, a county central to the country's desperate hopes for a good harvest, in which the upheavals and social schisms of WW1 were felt particularly keenly. Summer 1918 marks the point when Britain was on the brink of starvation, with the most important harvest of the war looming, both literally and metaphorically. Women, children, prisoners of war and wounded soldiers are all being put to work on the land. However, there are also those unable or unwilling to help the Government drive to feed the war effort. Dartmoor prison now houses 1000 conscientious objectors, much to the fury of local people with family away fighting, whilst at nearby Seale Hayne, a radical new hospital for shell-shocked soldiers has opened. Season 14 challenges notions of a harmonious rural idyll. Season 14 of Home Front is story-led by Sebastian Baczkiewicz, and subtitled "Needs Must When the Devil Drives". Lucy Catherine, Katie Hims and Sarah Daniels complete the writing team for this season, which will also feature the return of Anton Lesser, Matthew Beard and Maggie Steed, and guest appearances from Geoffrey Palmer, Mark Heap, Jonathan Bailey and Damien Molony.

On this day in 1918, the post office stated in the Times that it accepted no liability for post lost due to enemy action, and in Folkestone, Sylvia receives a letter from her son. Written by Sarah Daniels Directed by Jessica Dromgoole Notes By 1918, some of the inevitable consequences of creating a large, paid, female workforce, and relying more than ever on educated women to run organisations supporting the war, were beginning to scare the establishment horses. Women were too free, and their freedom was too dangerous. Creating an impossible ideal of womanhood, and then attacking all other women for their immorality (read freedom) was a means of control then, and hasn't entirely died out. And hand in hand with praise for women's femininity came the other side of the coin - a celebration of purely masculine men, with an inevitable condemnation of any femininity in men. Season Thirteen of Home Front - A Woman's Place - is set back in Folkestone, which feels overrun with women, and where anxious pillars of the establishment are flustered by the proximity of all these women to all these men. Women themselves are emboldened politically by the recent introduction of female suffrage, and suppressed in turn by various measures - including the draconian DORA 40D amendment empowering the police to detain and examine women suspected of giving venereal disease to members of His Majesty's Forces. The action of Season 13 revolves around three households - Meadowthorpe (a utopian female household), The Old Rectory (a brothel) and Keepers Lodge (a home for unmarried mothers) - which are popularly taken to be much of a muchness. Season 13 is story-led by Sarah Daniels, with episodes by Sarah, Lucy Catherine and Katie Hims.

Written by Sebastian Baczkiewicz Directed by Jessica Dromgoole Notes The excitement and fear provoked by the Bolshevik Revolution that overturned Russia, Britain's greatest ally in the war, rippled out around the world and - briefly - made people believe that anything was possible. Season 12 of Home Front, 'Giddy with Possibility', is set back in the world of industrial Tyneside, at a time of unprecedented unrest and union activity, and where ladies' football is gaining a foothold in the national imagination. By Sarah Daniels. A special edition of Home Front, marking the centenary of Britain's first Gotha Air Raid, which devastated Folkestone on 25 May 1917. Weaving real historical figures and testimony with the stories and characters of Home Front, Sarah Daniels pays tribute to the people who died in this sudden, shocking atrocity. Written by Sarah Daniels Sound by Martha Littlehailes Directed by Jessica Dromgoole NOTES Friday 25 May 1917 marked the beginning of the Whitsun weekend, and shoppers queued in Tontine Street outside Stokes Greengrocers, who had put word around town that they were stocking fresh potatoes on that day. A squadron of Gotha planes who had attempted an attack on London, were returning unsuccessful, and tried their luck bombing the railway line that took thousands of soldiers daily to the coast. Some planes attacked Shorncliffe Camp, killing 18, mainly Canadians, while others swept east across the town. A single bomb was dropped on Tontine Street at 6.22pm (breaking the clock of the Congregational Church). It killed 63 - 10 men, 28 women and 25 children. More than 100 were injured. On Thursday 25 May 2017, the first plaque commemorating the victims will be unveiled in Folkestone.

On this day in 1917, newspapers reported that food prices had risen 94% since the start of the war, and Ralph Winwood returns from France to a Folkestone he doesn't recognise. Written by Shaun McKenna Directed by Allegra McIlroy Sound: Martha Littlehailes Editor: Jessica Dromgoole NOTES HOME FRONT SEASON 10: OUR DAILY BREAD Season Ten has as its theme the Church and Class. By April 1917, food shortages were becoming a focus of Great War Britain. In Berlin, the day before our season opens, there were food riots and strikes in protest against food rationing. Meanwhile in Britain, discussions were beginning about voluntary rationing for the upper classes, and the working classes struggled to afford what food there was. Nearly three years into the war, with no prospect of peace on the horizon, and many, many families touched by loss and grief, the desire to memorialise the fallen took hold, and the debate about intercessionary prayers (i.e. for the dead) raged. Just after the season's close, the Archbishop of Canterbury controversially included an intercessionary prayer in his new prayer book. Out of nowhere, on 25 May 1917, a fleet of Gothas attacked the South coast of Britain, specifically Folkestone, in the first ever air raid on Britain, causing the greatest number of civilian casualties of the war to date. A special edition of Home Front: A LIGHTENING, written by Sarah Daniels and directed by Jessica Dromgoole, was broadcast as Radio 4's Afternoon Drama on 25 May 2017 to mark this anniversary. Season 10 of Home Front is story-led by Sarah Daniels (THE CAZALETS, EATING FOR ENGLAND), and written by Shaun McKenna (THE FORSYTES), Sebastian Baczkiewicz (PILGRIM, MR RAINBOW), and Katie Hims (LOST PROPERTY, BLACK DOG).

The key is to get clear on what it means to be creative.”
