Zen teacher and mindfulness pioneer Fleet Maull joins me for a deep dive into neurosomatic mindfulness, bearing witness, and the science of awakening. We discuss plunge practices, time in prison, the nuances of running summits, and the shift from the 60s to the 90s in spiritual culture. Fleet shares insights on trauma, self-regulation, the five neural networks of enlightenment, and “practice stacking.” We also explore the balance between conceptual and embodied mindfulness, the pitfalls of spiritual materialism, and what neuroscience reveals about awakening. A thoughtful, full-spectrum conversation for meditators and seekers alike. Freedom is often something we say we want, with the implication being that we don't have it. We aren't free, because of x, y, or z. Then we look outside ourselves to find fault, laying the blame for our situation (whatever that may be) out there. When nothing changes, the ego is safe in the notion that the situation isn't our fault. The means to change it isn't in our hands. So, the cycle continues. The realm of possibility isn't entered. What is possible, though? We will learn: How to understand the defining moments that got you here without placing blame. How to find presence, even when the present moment isn't where you want to be. The link between radical responsibility and mindfulness-based emotional intelligence. Whose fault is it that you are the way you are? Or that you are where you are? We tend to get tunnel vision when things aren't going our way. But our limitations are all just perceptions. Instead of seeing them as roadblocks, we can choose to see what they're funneling us toward. But how do we finally move beyond blame so that the wider perspective is our default? That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Fleet Maull. Dr. Fleet Maull is an author and a renowned growth mindset teacher who delivers his training programs and seminars around the world both in-person and online through Heart Mind Institute. He's a meditation teacher and founder of the Prison Mindfulness Institute and National Prison Hospice Association, all while serving a 14-year mandatory-minimum federal drug sentence, 1985 to 1999. He's talking to Amy about his mission to be of service to help those who have been shamed, forgotten, and alienated from society. You'll hear his incredible journey from drug smuggler to founding the Prison Mindfulness Institute and National Prison Hospice Association, catalyzing two national movements, while serving a 14-year mandatory-minimum federal drug sentence. Dr. Maull developed the Radical Responsibility empowerment model that embraces 100 percent ownership for each and every circumstance we face, free of blaming oneself or others. Fleet is a Roshi (Zen master) in the international Zen Peacemaker Order and Acharya (senior Dharma teacher) in the global Shambhala meditation community. He is the author of Radical Responsibility: How to Move Beyond Blame, Fearlessly Live our Higher Purpose and Become an Unstoppable Force for Good in the World. Today, Commander Divine is joined by his friend, Amy Jurkowitz, to answer questions from his followers on Facebook Live, as well as questions submitted prior to the livestream. Mark shares interesting insights on what it takes to be a great leader, how to cultivate compassion, how to start a mindfulness practice, and other suggestions on improving our mind, body, and spirit. Key Takeaways: There were several questions about leadership including the following: @drpedre: What do you think it takes to really be a leader? What characteristics? @pthompson34: What qualities and characteristics do you feel a strong leader obtains? Mark broke down the top 4 characteristics needed in a great leader. Self-Awareness: Great leaders need to understand their strengths and weaknesses, as well as a general understanding of human nature and how we show up in the world. Self-Control: The next step after becoming aware is using that awareness to guide in self control. A great leader is able to show restraint and remain calm under pressure. Humility: It's not about the leader. It's about the team and the mission. A great leader knows when to step aside, and let the team take the credit. Openness: A great leader has an open heart and is inclusive of all people and listens to all points of view. @pablo_vasconez27 How does a leader confront other peoples' views after explaining a decision made? Unless this is new information that impacts the decision, the decision has already been made, but it's important to listen and thank people for sharing their perspective. @AnnShippymd How do you show up when you really don't feel like it? Do something hard to change that feeling; that could be a cold shower or a hard workout. If that doesn't work, fake it till you make it! @its_meeh_hanna What is your evening routine 3 hours before bed? -Beach walk and/or aikido or acupuncture -Prepares dinner with his partner(sharing builds intimacy!) -Debriefs the day over dinner. -Reflective practice in bed. -Pays close attention to sleep hygiene. @truehealthproject Do you find that breathwork brings up anxiety? If breathwork makes you anxious, you're either doing it incorrectly, or you're doing the wrong type of breathwork to activate a parasympathetic response. You need to focus on a slow inhale, and a slow exhale. Box breathing is a great practice for this! @zenthesavage listened to the conversation you had with Dr. Fleet Maull. Interesting convo. Among the topics you discussed, I'd like to learn more about cultivating compassion for oneself and others, especially to overcome atmospheres of shame or hate. When we have difficulty with others, it is often a sign we recognize things about them that we dislike about ourselves. We must first love and accept ourselves, flaws and all. We can also practice a loving kindness meditation. This is a great way to send kindness to ourselves and others. Another part of this is the practice of forgiveness. We must forgive ourselves and others, whether in writing, in person, or just in our minds. Forgiveness is crucial to healing. How to get started with meditation? Joining a community with a qualified teacher is really the best way to go. If you must get started on your own, it can be extremely helpful to start with a practice like box breathing to calm the central nervous system first. Box breathing(deep belly breathing with a count of 4 in, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, repeat.) Outlook on accelerated pace of digitization and decentralization? We are changing at an exponential rate. People are starting to awaken. However, the direction the world takes is really going to depend on asking the right questions, and more and more people waking up.

He is a tireless and dedicated peacemaker and servant leader working for positive social transformation and a more just and sustainable global society. In this episode, Adam and Fleet Maull discuss:Getting yourself unstuck from the Drama TriangleSetting up good boundaries Using breathwork and meditationKey Takeaways:Recognizing that your stuck in a drama triangle could help unstuck yourself from it. Being stuck into the role of a prosecutor, a rescuer, or a victim is determined by your mindset.Know when to say yes and when to say no. Take saying yes or no to yourself as an example, if you say can't say no to yourself you're not gonna accomplish much but if you don't say yes to yourself you won't have any joy in life. Knowing the balance of when to say yes and when to say no is the key to build good boundaries. Taking a breath allows us to have a moment of recognition when we're faced with challenging situations. It allows us to recognize our options instead of just falling into an automatic reaction. "We need to balance out all the negativity we're exposed to with positive things. "The thing that's so radical about radical responsibility is that it's the idea of embracing every circumstance we face in life." Dr Fleet Muall The worst turn of events can turn out to be the best thing to happen, which turns someone's life around to be more useful and meaningful. This is true for our guest today, Dr Fleet Muall, who was able to turn his bad luck of being imprisoned into a journey of growth and transformation. Dr. Fleet attributes this to taking ownership of his actions and working towards being and doing better. Dr. Fleet Maull, PhD and author, is a renowned growth mindset teacher who delivers his training programs and seminars worldwide, both in-person and online, through Heart Mind Institute. He is a meditation teacher, executive coach, seminar leader and social entrepreneur who works at the intersection of personal and social transformation. He is the author of Radical Responsibility: How to Move Beyond Blame, Fearlessly Live our Higher Purpose and Become an Unstoppable Force for Good in the World https://amzn.to/3sm7m3M. In today's episode, Dr Fleet will discuss the eventful journey that led him to become one of the most renowned teacher and coach. He will also provide insights on practicing mindfulness and why it is important, especially in the current world. Listen in! [3:04] But I do feel really good about what I did with my time. While I was there, I was fortunate that I had a lot of skills and training and education before I went to prison, which kind of begs the question of why I ended up there. [3:16] I earned my way into that federal prison time, but when I got there, it was a huge wake-up call, especially because my son was nine years old at the time, and I realized he was not going to grow up without a dad. [3:45] When I went in, I had a master's degree and a very intense clinical trade three-year clinical training program, and I had been trained as a meditation teacher and a Buddhist teacher for ten years. [4:52] I had a strong background, and I was devastated over what I had done to myself and my family, especially my son. [5:06] I've lived this very disciplined life of a prison monk, getting up at four or five in the morning and practicing intensively. [5:33] When I arrived there, I realized that it was an incredibly negative environment and that everyone had their own victim story of one kind or another. [6:24] Naturally trying to survive, you tend to armor up with your own story and anger and bitterness. Unfortunately, that prevents us from accessing genuine regret and remorse for any harm we've created, which fuels the journey of transformation. [6:57] It was really clear to me that I didn't want to end up coming out of prison broken, angry and bitter, and I didn't want to live that way when I was in there. [7:11] I realized that the only way through and out for me was to embrace 200% responsibility for having got myself in there, what I was going to do with my time there, and what I would be able to create for myself if I was ever able to get beyond the prison journey. [7:22] I stepped out of prison and into a career as a management consultant and executive coach, leading turnarounds and transformative change processes in business. [8:32] My time in prison trained me how to work with people and how to be skillful under the most challenging situation. [10:45] There is a term called a pain paradox in psychology, where our natural instinct is to withdraw from pain. [11:15] But we all know through many disciplines, historically, across cultures into modern psychology, and everything that transformations on the other side of pain and that all the joy and transformation and possibilities on life are on the other side of it. [11:27] The thing that's so radical about radical responsibility is that it's the idea of embracing every circumstance we face in life. [12:00] We look at that not to blame ourselves at all, but simply for learning because once I see how it works and how I got from point A to B to C, I can make different choices in the future and get different results. [12:35] But then there are also situations and circumstances that we may feel we had nothing to do with, and everyone would agree it just fell out of the sky and landed on our heads, and those things may be incredibly unjust. [12:45] For ourselves, at some point, we question whether we are going to let it take us down, but here it is, and so I have to find some creative way to respond to it, transform it and move forward in my life. [13:02] Most of us associate things like responsibility and accountability with blame; we've all been enculturated into this culture of shame and blame. [14:06] It is simply about focusing my energy to do the most good, embracing my capacity for a creative response to life, and doing the best I can with that. [15:03] While I was in prison, I just focused on my practice and modelled it in terms of who I was, and people became attracted to it. [15:55] At some point early on, I also started corresponding with other prisoners. I realized it was a much bigger thing that I could do, so I started the prison Dharma network, primarily known as the prison mindful Institute. [16:12] We have a program called the path of Freedom, a mindfulness-based emotional intelligence training program for prisoners in 21 states in seven countries. [16:37] We have got involved in the whole criminal justice and public safety system that all grew out of being in a prison cell and saying, "What can I do to transform myself and to bring value to the world?" [17:18] I also have my whole for-profit business, where I am putting out summits and offering lots of online courses and online challenges that are basically in the realm of integration of mindset and so forth. [17:39] Growing up, nobody taught us anything about how to navigate the most complex system in the known universe: the human brain and nervous system. We didn't get much training on how to communicate with others. [18:42] My mindfulness and emotional intelligence training, all these things, are just kind of the basic toolkit for life. [18:55] Commercial break. [19:09] We have something called the autonomic nervous system that operates almost the whole of the human body, the human brain and the nervous system, and it has two branches. [21:01] The sympathetic branch upregulates and is about alertness, distress, and fighter flight, and the parasympathetic branch downregulates and is about relaxation, rest and recovery. [21:13] The problem is in the modern life, most of us have way too much sympathetic activation, and that's called stress. [21:36] Over time, that's the source of all the chronic stress-related illnesses, which diminishes the quality of life altogether. [22:06] A simple skill that you can learn is called strong breathing because our autonomic nervous system are connected with the breath. [22:21] When we breathe in, there's a slight sympathetic activation when we breathe out slight parasympathetic activation. [22:34] Straw breathing can be a lifesaver, and it is so simple anyone can learn it. You breathe into the nose with your mouth close, and then you breathe out through pursed lips. [23:06] One more thing that people can easily add to is 478 breathing, where you breathe in that fourth count, hold for seven counts, and then breathe out for the eighth count. [26:03] This idea of radical responsibility is not new, it has been around for a long time. [30:27] Marcus Aurelius said that most people feel their circumstances determine their destiny, but our response to those circumstances determines our destiny and even being able to respond to circumstances rather than being in just our condition reactivity. [30:32] Most of us walk around thinking we're autonomous, but we're highly mechanical, and so we need to embrace some practices to become more wakeful and more present. [31:04] Learning something like mindfulness and then embracing this idea of living our lives more in the driver's seat of our own life will transform any circumstance. [31:30] Regardless of the situation, looking for what I can do put you right back in the mind of solution-based thinking, and there is always a million different things we could do. On today's episode of Awake & On Purpose Podcast, Jennifer speaks with Dr. Fleet Maull about our personal sovereignty and the responsibility that comes with that to be accountable to and for ourselves. They also discuss mindfulness as a growing movement, and of course, Fleet's incredible journey of growth and transformation which led him to become a thought leader in growth mindset. Indoctrination, polarization, why many people aren't proactive in their growth, and so much more are in today's episode, so be sure you don't miss it! That's interesting about what you said about learning to recognize truth, because that's always a difficult thing. Right? What is truth? And I do think the body is critical of that because the body has a lot of wisdom. And that's why I think the mindfulness movement is so important, because I think the more embodied we are, we can kind of generally recognize truth. Why do some people thrive in the face of hardship while others are crushed? To this challenging listener question, Matthew answers essentially that it’s about building resilience through the method of optimism versus the default of passive pessimistic resignation. On a deeper level, it’s about free will (optimistic) versus determinism (pessimistic).Through his search into Viktor Frankl’s “focused optimistic purpose” and “tragic optimism”, Matthew came across a phenomenon known as “toxic positivity,” which sounds awfully similar to his own concept identified as “subjective optimism.” Neither pessimism nor subjective optimism is an effective method for dealing with hardship, or even regular life, and Matthew goes deep into why only Objective Optimism is a potent antidote to the toxicity of all the others. He also refers to two previous interviews, where guests Lewis Page and Dr. Fleet Maull contribute relevant insights on this issue, which includes the question of whether “waking up” necessitates deep adversity. (Hint: It doesn’t.)Read 'What is Objective Optimism?": https://matthewboulton.ca/2020/01/15/what-is-objective-optimism/Listen to Lewis Page on Mr. Bright Side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3rj9aZ94rY&t=528sListen to Fleet Maull on Mr. Bright Side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbolq8MX9MY&t=3sWatch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPV9AovHYK8Learn more at https://matthewboulton.ca/ or https://www.facebook.com/matthewboulton.ca/

The notion of transmuting the difficult stuff in your life into something positive has become a cliche. Turning lemon into lemonades, making your mess your message, etcetera. But, as I have said many times on this show, there is a reason cliches become cliches: they’re true. And it is extraordinarily helpful, in my experience, when someone can re-language and revivify an ancient truth that has been ground into platitude through rote repetition. My guest today does just that. Fleet Maull spent many years in prison on serious drug-related charges. He used that time to fuel a deep meditation practice and public service career. He’s practiced for nearly five decades in the Zen, Tibetan, and Vipassana Insight traditions. He’s also written a book called Radical Responsibility. In this episode, we talk about how to, in his words, turn the gnarly stuff in your life into a gift (or, as an old Buddhist expression has it, how to use your struggles as “manure for enlightenment”). On that note, midway through the interview, you’ll hear Fleet reveal, in real time, and to my surprise, that he is actually in the throes of acute anguish at this very moment-- and he will talk about how this experience is fueling his practice. We also talk about: what he learned in prison about whether human nature is fundamentally good; the value of adding breathing exercises onto your meditation practice; what he means by “neurosomatic mindfulness.” Where to find Fleet Maull online: Website: www.fleetmaull.com Social Media: • Twitter: https://twitter.com/fleetmaull • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fleetmaull/ • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fleetmaull/ • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL_AqFCn3m6lvQTJPIx_uLg Books Mentioned: • Radical Responsibility: How to Move Beyond Blame, Fearlessly Live Your Highest Purpose, and Become an Unstoppable Force for Good by Fleet Maull: www.radicalresponsibilitybook.com • Mindfulness and Psychotherapy edited by Christopher K. He overcame incarceration and addiction before becoming an executive coach and author. Most recently he wrote his book, ‘Radical Responsibility: How to Move Beyond Blame, Fearlessly Live Your Highest Purpose and Become An Unstoppable Force For Good.’ As Fleet characterizes, mindfulness, compassion, and the practice of loving-kindness are at the crux of radical responsibility. By embracing ownership for each and every circumstance we face in life (without assigning blame or cultivating a victim narrative) we are better able to reflect upon our current situations and assess creative solutions for moving forward. In this final episode of Open Question season one, Elizabeth speaks with Fleet Maull, prison activist, Buddhist practitioner, and author of “Dharma in Hell” and “Radical Responsibility.” He has a fascinating story to tell us about his 14 years of Buddhist practice in prison, starting the first prison hospice program, and the practice of bearing witness. One of the messages Elizabeth took away from this conversation with Fleet, was the need to take ownership of one’s life circumstances. Fleet uses the term “radical responsibility” to describe how agency comes from accepting our own karma. Fleet’s example shows us that it is possible to find agency even in an environment like prison, which, by all conventional definitions, is the antithesis of freedom.
In this episode of the Championship Leadership podcast Fleet Maull talks about his experience co-directing a non profit and being in prison, mindfulness and meditation, radical responsibility and so much more.

In this episode, Michael and Fleet discuss how to eradicate all negativity from our lives, skills he mastered while serving time in prison. They also discuss practices for waking up to the truth and experience of our innate, unconditional goodness, in spite of the state of the world. They look at different modes of mindfulness and how to deepen our meditation and spiritual practice.
On this episode of the Reboot Podcast, Jerry is joined by Fleet Maull, a fellow coach, social entrepreneur, and author of the recently released book, "Radical Responsibility". In this conversation, Fleet shares how his experience in the US prison system served as the impetus for the formation, development, and personal application of his radical responsibility philosophy. As Fleet characterizes, mindfulness, compassion, and the practice of loving-kindness are at the crux of radical responsibility. By embracing ownership for each and every circumstance we face in life (without assigning blame or cultivating a victim narrative) we are better able to reflect upon our current situations and assess creative solutions for moving forward. In considering radical responsibility, Jerry and Fleet tackle three important questions: How am I complicit in creating the conditions I don’t want? In what way can I take ownership for circumstances that I may not have any complicity in? What can be gained from holding your seat amongst the chaos of life? Fleet Maull visits Raghu on the Mindrolling Podcast for a conversation about the practices and perspectives that can help us all move about our daily lives with grace.Fleet Maull, PhD, CMT-P, is an author, consultant, trainer and executive coach. Fleet also serves as a meditation teacher, consultant, trainer, social entrepreneur, and end-of-life care educator. In this episode, Fleet shares how the practices of service, mindfulness and compassion enabled positive personal transformation during his 15 years in prison. He looks at how taking radical responsibility for our life can allow us to move beyond fear.
Acharya Fleet Maull, Ph.D came of age in the late sixties and discovered Buddhism as part of the counter-cultural search for authenticity. After college he moved to Peru where he encountered the writings of his first teacher, Trungpa Rimpoche, and the opportunities of living outside the system by smuggling drugs. He moved to Colorado to study with Trungpa becoming one of his primary attendants but continued to live a dual life as a dharma practitioner and drug user and smuggler. This karma caught up to him in 1985 and he faced the choice of going on the run or turning himself in. He turned to Trungpa for advice and he recommended that Fleet face what he had created, which began the pain and chaos of long term incarceration. Again faced with the choice of hunkering down and just trying to get through the time or finding a way to help others with their suffering, Fleet began to develop his practice along the ethical teachings of the precepts. Four years into his fourteen-year sentence, Fleet founded the Prison Mindfulness Institute, which has become a leading provider of mindfulness programming for both prisoners and criminal justice professionals. Today Fleet is a senior lineage teacher in the Shambhala community and is a dharma successor of Roshi Bernie Glassman. He is a senior priest in the Zen Peacemaker community assisting with Auschwitz Bearing Witness retreats and co-founded the Rwanda Bearing Witness retreats.
