Swappie, Europe's leading platform for refurbished iPhones, reveals a staggering €140 billion worth of unused mobile phones languishing in European households, underscoring a significant opportunity for economic recovery and environmental sustainability. Recent data from the European Commission highlights that over 700 million mobile phones are currently unused across the EU. Assigning an estimated average value of €200 per device, this dormant stockpile represents an untapped value of €140 billion. Each holiday season, millions of new smartphones are purchased, leading to a significant increase in the number of idle devices in households. This annual surge exacerbates the existing issue of tech bloat, underscoring the urgent need to reintegrate these devices into the circular economy. "Encouraging the circulation of these unused devices is crucial," says Emma Lehikoinen, Chief Operating Officer at Swappie. "By bringing them back into the market, we not only unlock substantial economic value but also contribute to environmental conservation by reducing electronic waste." A KANTAR study undertaken by Swappie indicated that 62% of Irish consumers retain their previous smartphones. Beyond the economic implications, unused mobile phones contain valuable materials, including critical raw materials essential for new technologies. The European Commission reports that the collection rate for mobile phones is under 5%, with an estimated 700 million unused devices stored in households across the EU. Enhancing the return and recycling of these devices is vital for resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. Swappie is at the forefront of the refurbished smartphone market, offering consumers high-quality, affordable alternatives to new devices. The company's rigorous refurbishment process ensures that each iPhone meets stringent quality standards, providing a reliable and sustainable option for tech enthusiasts. As the number of idle phones continues to rise, especially after the holiday season, Swappie urges consumers to consider the environmental and economic benefits of trading in their unused devices. Reintegrating these smartphones into the market supports the circular economy and helps mitigate the growing issue of electronic waste. See more stories here.
Swappie, an online iPhone refurbishment company focused on sustainability, is sharing its ways of making this Christmas season more green. Swappie puts their iPhones through a 52-step process to ensure that they are working properly and make any necessary repairs. According to Swappie, "the carbon footprint of a Swappie refurbished smartphone is 78% less than that of a new smartphone." In 2021, the company comparatively reduced emissions by 23,550 tons of CO2E, which is equivalent to what almost 400,000 trees consume over 10 years. It was founded in Finland, in 2016, after the founders were the unfortunate victims of an online scan to repurpose and purchase phones. The ambition of a circular economy for technology is at the root of everything Swappie does and is what drives them on their mission of making refurbished devices, more common and popular. At Swappie, they believe tech doesn't have an expiry date, and to extend the life of an iPhone, Swappie purchases the device you've outgrown and either repairs it in-house or recycles all the reusable parts to be used again and again. The process of buying and selling refurbished iPhones has attracted over 1 million customers. Tips for a Greener Christmas from Swappie 1. Experiences, more than things Instead of buying physical gifts that may end up unused, get gift experiences such as concert tickets, cooking classes, or even a subscription to an online service. These gifts are memorable, personalized, and don't produce waste. 2. Shop local Supporting local artisans with sustainable practices reduces the carbon footprint associated with shipping and packaging. It also helps build community resilience. 3. Buy gifts with a purpose Choose gifts from brands that prioritize social and environmental impact, such as fair-trade goods, organic products, or items from companies with a clear give-back mission. 4. DIY Handmade gifts, such as home-baked treats, upcycled crafts, or personalized photo albums, carry sentimental value without harming the environment. Encouraging creativity and personalization can reduce the waste that comes with mass-produced items. 5. Wrapping Avoid single-use wrapping paper and instead, opt for reusable alternatives like fabric gift wrap (like furoshiki, the Japanese wrapping technique), recycled paper, or repurposed materials like old maps or newspaper. Tying gifts with reusable ribbons or natural materials like twine can also add charm without waste. 6. Charity For the person who has everything, make a donation in their name to a cause they care about, such as an environmental charity or a community project. It's a thoughtful way to reduce material waste and contribute to a meaningful cause. 7. Go digital! Gifting digital content, such as e-books, audiobooks, or streaming subscriptions, minimizes material waste while offering entertainment or learning opportunities. 8. Long lasting is the way! Encourage choosing products that are built to last, reducing the likelihood of them being replaced or discarded quickly. For tech, refurbished iPhones from Swappie are a great example of high-quality, durable gifts, thanks to a 12-month warranty and extensive 52-stage refurbishment process "Because we can all agree, that great tech shouldn't cost us the earth." If piled together, this amount would equal the height of 4,500 Eiffel Towers3. Unfortunately, only 20% of global e-waste is formally recycled4, leaving a staggering amount in landfills and informal recycling operations, causing significant harm to the environment and human health. "Every phone that is refurbished and reused is one less phone in a landfill," says Luísa Vasconcelos e Sousa, Country Manager for Swappie Ireland. "Our mission is to make refurbished mainstream and, in doing so, help mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste." Our team took the iPhone12 through its paces, after surviving an initial scare. Swappie suggest that you may save 78% CO2 when buying a refurbished phone compared to a new one. They also offer a trade in for your older models, and also a phone switch option too if it breaks. Swappie iPhone 12 reviewed A few years ago our testers got their hands on another Swappie iphone, and they were happy with their experience that time around. Therefore it was with baited breath that they anticipated returning to this company and their refurbished iPhones. It almost began very badly too. While the exterior packaging was all as to be expected, when the tester opened the box, not anticipating that the phone inside was not secured, it fell straight out. Thankfully it only landed on the testing table, but some quick investigation suggested that the inner cradle where the phone sat was not spoke to that particular model. While we know it can be a pain to find the right cover for new phones, this should not be an issue for the iPhone 12, due to its time on the market already, and it's relative success too. However it seems critical that the internal packaging of the box also ensures that the phone is secure until the user takes out. Naturally there was some internal discussion about if our tester was ham fisted, but they held to their belief that it was the phone and lack of appropriate packaging, rather than their cavalier approach to opening boxes. After all of that drama, and perhaps a little rose tinted, our reviewer was extremely positive about the device. It delivered all the things you would expect from the iPhone family and the 12 in particular. It looked and felt like the real deal. The price point is naturally a big appeal too, and Swappie have aimed to address concerns about battery life too. Everyone knows that iPhones are not great for the length of time they hold a charge, and so it makes sense that you would then walk that concern through to a previously used phone too. They aim to ensure that your attempts to be ecologically conscious are not comprised by a poorer user experience at the same time. An Earth Day Survey by Swappie Highlights Urgent Need for E-waste Education as the World's Generation of E-waste Rises Five Times Faster than Documented E-waste Recycling As the world celebrates Earth Day, Swappie, Europe's largest iPhone refurbisher, has unveiled a dire need to educate people about the impact of e-waste. This alarm bell comes as a study by the United Nations reveals that a record 62 million tonnes of e-waste was produced in 2022, up 82% from 2010; on track to rise another 32%, to 82 million tonnes, in 2030. The challenges of dealing with E-waste Swappie did a pan-Europe community survey to gauge people's knowledge and awareness about sustainable habits, carbon footprint and the impact of e-waste on the planet. The result was a startling and urgent need for more awareness across all age groups shedding light on widespread ignorance regarding e-waste and its consequences. Globally, the annual generation of e-waste is rising by 2.6 million tonnes while the documented recycling rate has dropped from 22.3% in 2022 to 20% in 2030 - as recycling efforts fail to match pace with the monumental growth of e-waste generation worldwide. The key highlights from the survey are as follows: Awareness Gap: A staggering 62.7% of Irish respondents were unaware of the projected 82 million metric ton increase in e-waste by 2030, equivalent to discarding 1,000 laptops every second. Personal Impact on E-Waste: Around 25% of global respondents correctly estimated their annual e-waste production. Knowledge of iPhone Carbon Emissions: 22.7% correctly identified that it emits approximately 82 kg of CO2 in its first year of life. Concern for the Environment: Despite the lack of e-waste awareness, the majority of Irish respondents expressed significant concern about their carbon footprint and environmental impact. 61.6% rated their concern as 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-5, indicating high levels of worry about their personal environmental footprint. Sounding the alarm, Luísa Vasconcelos e Sousa, Country Manager for Ireland at Swappie said: "These survey findings underscore the critical importance of raising awareness about e-waste and its detrimental effects on our planet. It is evident that there is a strong desire among consumers to make more informed choices to mitigate their impact on the environment - but the buck doesn't stop here. We, at Swappie, pledge to inform more and more people about e-waste and how every person can contribute in making the world a better place." Swappie remains committed to environmental education and sustainability, aiming to empower individuals with knowledge to combat e-waste and reduce carbon emissions. As part of its Earth Day initiatives, Swappie will be launching educational campaigns and resources to help individuals better understand and address the challenges posed by e-waste.
This week Jess chats to the General Manager of Uber in Ireland about the rollout of the taxi service in Limerick. We'll take a closer look at the environmental impact of buying refurbished vs new and we'll hear about the tech platform helping women to understand their hormone health.

Startups creating new materials, including for food industries, can have a significant climate impact, making them interesting targets for the Nordic investment firm Inventure, partner Tuomas Kosonen said in an interview on the sidelines of the TechChill startup conference in Riga in late April 2022.Inventure is a Helsinki-headquartered seed-stage investor, known for its investments in companies like Wolt and Swappie.**A few key takeaways from Tuomas Kosonen:**We are not an impact investor. We are a pure financial investor, but in the past years, all ESG-related topics have raised their meaning, coming from all also from the portfolio and from LPs. We have to be very aware of all these topics.**That's something that is like super important on the agenda of pension funds, insurance companies, and public money. And, of course, it is super nice to see what kind of impact money can make. So if the big money or institutional investors would not care for it, most of the investors, at least, wouldn't put that much effort into that one. But actually, you might not even qualify for the money, like the LP commitment, if you're not part of that.**Especially what we have done in the past is on new materials, so like, plastic replacement, or like carbon nanotubes. That's something that has a huge environmental impact. So that's something we are now looking for in the coming two years. **Food-related companies will have a direct impact line quite fast, much faster, some material technologies. And then the food, I guess, is superheated as well. Yes, and we have looked at meat replacement companies; unfortunately not invested single one of them yet. There have been some quite interesting ones.
Swappie, the leading end-to-end online destination for buying and selling refurbished smartphones, has announced that it is opening a pop-up shop in Dublin. It's the first of its kind outside of Swappie's origin country of Finland and was chosen because Ireland is a key market for the company. Since its launch in Ireland in 2020, Swappie has been providing Irish people with an opportunity to purchase environmentally responsible smartphones. Now it's going to be easier than ever with the opening of a physical store in Dublin city centre which will give consumers a chance to see, touch and feel the iPhones before they purchase. Swappie's Pop Up store, which is located at 32 Exchequer Street, Dublin, opens on Monday May 30th and will remain open until June 27th, 2022. The shop will be open from Monday to Saturday 10am until 6pm and on a Sunday from 10am until 3pm. Speaking about the opening of the pop-up shop, Swappie Country Manager for Ireland Casper Andersen says ‘Ireland is a key market for us at Swappie so having a physical presence with the pop-up store will allow us to talk directly to our customers face to face. Our research shows us that Irish people are increasingly looking for ways to lessen their environmental impact however they do shop less online than some of their European counterparts and it can be daunting to buy a refurbished iPhone. We know trust is not built in a day, so the opening of the pop-up shop is an important move for us at Swappie. Having a physical presence will help us hear more about what Irish people want when it comes to refurbished technology'. Swappie, which currently operates in 15 countries across Europe, aims to drive positive impact by bringing the circular economy to the masses. With consumers becoming more aware of the impact their choice of device can have on the environment, Swappie is in a unique position to provide customers with a high quality, more affordable and environmentally friendly way to upgrade their phones. It's predicted that smartphones will generate 146 million tons of CO2 emissions this year, with 83% of those emissions coming from the manufacture, shipping and first-year usage of the 1.4 billion new smartphones forecast to be shipped in 2022. Keeping a mobile phone in use for an extra year cuts its lifetime C02 impact by a third, reducing the demand for precious resources and cutting emissions associated with buying a new phone. In the Swappie Pop-Up store on Exchequer Street in Dublin 2 customers looking to buy will get to experience a refurbished iPhone and hear more about the refurbishment process which is carried out in Swappie's own factories in Helsinki and Estonia. Consumers will be able to order a Swappie phone on site which will then be delivered free of charge. Those looking to sell an old iPhone, will also be able to find out what their phone is worth and begin the process of selling it. Swappie announced in February 2021 that it had raised €108 million in Series C funding to accelerate its European growth and to allow it to continue to meet the growing customers demand for refurbished goods. It is transforming the market by closing the loop on refurbished electronics for the first time and making the circular smartphone economy accessible to the masses. The overall market for used and refurbished smartphones increased by 15% year on year in 2021, beating all expectations. Swappie's headcount is also set to increase from 1,200 to 2,200 people by the end of the year. See more stories here.

Lisaks sellele säästab Swappie tohutus mahus planeedi tervist, andes juba toodetud asjadele uue elu. Swappie Eesti personalijuht Britta Breckon ütleb, et hetkel tegelevad nad e-poena, mis ostab kokku, hooldab ja müüb vaid Apple'i toodetud telefone. Pikas perspektiivi, kuna platvorm on loodud, võiks tulla plaani ka teiste telefonide, kuid ka muu elektroonika taaselustamine. Hetkel müüakse second-hand iPhone'e üle Euroopa enam kui veerandsajas riigis. „Legend räägib, et üks kahest Swappie asutajast, Sami Marttinen, olla tahtnud 5–6 aastat tagasi osta endale soodsat iPhone'i. Eesti operatsioonikeskuses töötab hetkel 375 inimest,” selgitab Breckon. Kiiresti arenev ettevõte ootab enda juurde tööle kõiki, mitte vaid neid, kellel on kogemusi elektroonikaga. Personalijuht ütleb, et annavad igale uuele töötajale ise kontoris kohapeal vajalikud teadmised ja oskused. Lisaks on palk konkurentsivõimeline, töökeskkond inspireeriv ja ettevõte kiiresti arenev. Stuudios vestlesid vana elektroonika uuele elule aitamisest Swappie Eesti personalijuht Britta Breckon ja ajakirjanik Martin Hanson.
We catch up with Casper Andersen to learn more about his goal to ensure 50% of phone sales are refurbished models. About Casper Andersen Casper Andersen is Swappie's country manager for Ireland. His background is in investment banking and tech. Casper is overseeing the growth of Swappie in Ireland. About Swappie Since its launch in Helsinki in 2016, Swappie has become the Number 1 online destination for buying and selling refurbished iPhones in Europe. The Finnish start-up, which was founded by Jiri Heinonen and Smi Marttinen, now helps customers in fifteen countries choose environmentally friendly and affordable ways to stay up to date with the latest technology. The company's aim is to have 50% of all smart phones bought refurbished ones. In June 2020 Swappie raised €35.8 million in a funding round to support its international expansion into new markets including Ireland. Since its launch here in 2020 over 30,000 Irish consumers have chosen to buy from Swappie. Research shows that more and more Irish consumers are increasingly considering opting for a refurbished device. People aged 18-24 years are even more likely to do so. 27% of Swappie's customers are in this age bracket which is by far the largest group. All Swappie iPhones are refurbished by Swappie at their own factories in Helsinki and Estonia. They are put through a rigorous 52 step process covering cosmetics, hardware, battery and cleaning, and all Swappie spare parts have OEM quality. All Swappie iPhones also come with a 12-month warranty. Swappie's Irish customers are served by English speaking staff in the company's Helsinki Headquarters.

Most of us like new stuff better than used stuff, but not all new stuff is good for the planet. Sami is a guy who, with his team, figured out how to make used stuff into really good stuff. Refurbished stuff, as he calls it. Well, he might prefer to say refurbished iPhones, specifically. Sami is the Co-Founder and CEO of Swappie, an exponentially growing Finnish startup selling, you remember it, refurbished iPhones. Want to learn more about how to build a product and service that satisfies customers and makes the economy one step more circular? Sami knows a thing or two about that. Expect to learn: • How Swappie approaches internationalization • What is Swappie's philosophy when it comes to VC money and external funding • How Swappie has integrated a customer-centric approach to every step of their business model --- This episode is sponsored by Business Finland and this time we're promoting two things we really love: Finland and entrepreneurship.
