New Materials, Food Innovations in Focus for Inventure

Startups creating new materials, including for food industries, can have a significant climate impact, making them interesting targets for the Nordic investment firm Inventure,  partner Tuomas Kosonen said in an interview on the sidelines of the TechChill startup conference in Riga in late April 2022.Inventure is a Helsinki-headquartered seed-stage investor, known for its investments in companies like Wolt and Swappie.**A few key takeaways from Tuomas Kosonen:**We are not an impact investor. We are a pure financial investor, but in the past years, all ESG-related topics have raised their meaning, coming from all also from the portfolio and from LPs. We have to be very aware of all these topics.**That's something that is like super important on the agenda of pension funds, insurance companies, and public money. And, of course, it is super nice to see what kind of impact money can make. So if the big money or institutional investors would not care for it, most of the investors, at least, wouldn't put that much effort into that one. But actually, you might not even qualify for the money, like the LP commitment, if you're not part of that.**Especially what we have done in the past is on new materials, so like, plastic replacement, or like carbon nanotubes. That's something that has a huge environmental impact. So that's something we are now looking for in the coming two years. **Food-related companies will have a direct impact line quite fast, much faster, some material technologies. And then the food, I guess, is superheated as well. Yes, and we have looked at meat replacement companies; unfortunately not invested single one of them yet. There have been some quite interesting ones.

Today I welcome Linus Dahg, an investor at Inventure, a Nordic investment fund based in Helsinki and Stockholm.  What are the characteristics of the Nordic market? How such a small market managed to bring unicorns like Spotify to life?  What is the maturity of the Nordic ecosystem compared to Europe (second generation of entrepreneurs after Spotify and co ?) Are there specific areas in which you consider the Nordics to be ahead?  Why is Sweden more advanced in tech than its peers such as Finland, Norway, Denmark, or Iceland

Time management ,social connectedness, problem solving, self efficacy, self motivation and the biggest of them all, the art to focus are some of the many skills children learn if they play any kind of sport. Sport encourages kids to strive hard to become the best version of themselves and the never to give up attitude, the famous Mamba Mentality is such a positive message for children to apply in academics or to life in general. Sports is definitely not a distraction but a huge enabler of effective education.

In this podcast episode, we had the pleasure to speak with Tuomas Kosonen (Inventure) & Alain le Loux (Cottonwood Technology Fund). Inventure is a Nordic technology fund backing early-stage entrepreneurs. "Having our roots in Finland, we enjoy domains many don’t feel comfortable with, and make big bets on deep tech and scalable technologies." Inventure is currently investing from their third 120M€ fund. Cottonwood Technology Fund is an early-stage VC fund that invests both in Northern Europe & Southwest USA. Cottonwood’s investment approach and focus is on hard science, pre-seed, seed and early-stage funding. In this conversation we discuss (among other topics) how to invest in high tech and deep tech, how Europe becomes mature in terms of tech and venture capital (but is still behind US), and the risk of underfunding high tech companies. Enjoy! Thanks to Novel-T, the startup generator and incubator at the University of Twente, for hosting this podcast recording.

"Stop lying to yourself." Mohammed Aamir, a co-founder at a startup helping people to quit their nicotine addiction, tells us that honesty is a key to success in the startup dorm room. As an entrepreneur, you can fake confidence, but if you lie to yourself about how well your company is doing, then you are on your way to failure. Being honest with yourself and your teammates will allow you to correct poor business, leadership, and product decisions and mistakes before they cause your demise. And if you are on the wrong path, possibly even pursuing a startup idea that has no product-market fit, having self-awareness and the humility to let go and move on will save you from waisted time and money. Aamir gives great insight into validating your problem and solution before you start building to prevent such a loss. Other insights revealed in this phenomenal episode of Startup Dorm Room include: Starting a company as an international student. (It is possible!) Overcoming the fear of failure, even when pitching. Finding meaning in your work, and putting people over profits. Sometimes you can wing it, and it all works out. The Power of Visibility: Shivani Siroya on Inventure and the Emerging Middle Class   The planets aligned and I had the opportunity to speak with a woman in high demand and nearly constant motion: Shivani Siroya, founder and CEO of InVenture. We discussed the emerging middle class, the secret sauce of context in our daily lives, and the frustration and fantasy that gave her the idea for this brave new world of data science and quality of life.   The process that led Shivani to create InVenture - what she describes as mobile technology and data science company - was an organic one. Raised in both India and the US, she always had a sense that the people around her, regardless of geography or means, were equal. As a part of her work for the UN Population Fund, she spoke with over 4500 individuals in 9 distinct markets, and this deep dive only broadened her concept of value when it came to people and their businesses. The more she spoke with people, the more she realized that banks have a massive blind spot when it comes to determining lendability: they didn’t see their prospective customers’ daily lives, or how they interacted with the world around them. In her own words, “We needed to create a system for financial services that put people on a level playing field.” Thus, InVenture was born.   InVenture allows members of the emerging middle class in developing nations to forgo the dusty old school FICO type score and apply for loans and credit directly via their smartphones. Not only that, but the decision takes only a handful of minutes - and if consumers are denied, they are given insights as to how to improve their “score.” InVenture determines a person’s lendability by comparing their answers on a short questionnaire to the mobile data gleaned from their smartphones, and within moments someone who was once invisible to banking institutions is now able to make purchases for their business or even pay to attend school. By using this technology to uncover previously obscured data points, the InVenture team aren’t just providing consumers with money - they’re giving people unprecedented access to a chance at improving their quality of life.   Join us as we delve into this massive onramp for the emerging middle class, visibility as a superpower, data privacy, and the future of InVenture. Will citizens of the world soon be using their smartphones to prove their lendability? Shivani firmly believes that fresh relevant data, rather than a static snapshot is a more accurate reflection of that person. “Our ability to see that, as a company, is our value.”   Shivani LInkedIn Shivani Twitter Shivani TED profile Inventure site   For more visit: instigating.co Production: www.moondogmarketing.com

Jasmine Burton, an inspirational 24-year-old running a startup in Africa, hopes to improve women’s health via redesign of water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure - sparking the foundation of Wish for Wash. In this episode, you’ll learn how a variety of waste management gaps exist despite how far the western world has advanced the human experience. This creates an odd disparity between knowing that billions of people defecate in buckets and bags, yet are using smartphones to WhatsApp message each other.  Jasmine speaks on the challenges of making the cost per unit to be under $20, and how to make it affordable to the low-income communities that need the product most.   Key Takeaways: [00:10] According to the UN, 6 billion people have access to mobile phones. Yet, only 4.5 billion have access to working toilets. [01:15] Jasmine’s senior design team won the InVenture competition for their design of an inexpensive mobile toilet. [02:55] Jasmine explains her journey from Georgia to Zambia, and how her company is inspired by how access to toilets hinders women’s advancement worldwide. [04:30] Her team was the first all-female team to win the Georgia Tech InVenture competition. [05:00] At the end of 2014, she founded Wish for Wash and moved to Zambia to join a global health initiative, and now self-identifies as a “toilet designer”. [07:45] The need for healthy food is much easier to communicate than the need for good sanitation, making it difficult to convince people to change their behavior. [11:21] There’s nothing “wrong” with the way western civilization deals with sanitation and waste. However, there are opportunities to recycle waste rather than just moving it away from people. [13:15] The “sanitation value chain” explains the aspirational sanitation experience - capture, contain, transport, and repurpose. [14:15] Wish for Wash is looking at the other end of the value chain. Rather than thinking of how to profit from waste, they are focusing on capture and containment. [15:00] Their toilet design is modular, allowing for both sitting and squatting. They are also prototyping a manual bidet for communities who practice washing rather than wiping. [17:25] Access to affordable manufacturing is the current barrier to entry, especially allowing them to make quick and frequent iterations. [24:30] One of the biggest lessons learned in this venture is to practice patience. [26:00] There’s a challenge in selling both a product and a behavioral change at the same time. [27:15] They are exploring military applications, among other contexts for using the toilet. [28:12] Jasmine speaks to her big goal this year for Wish for Wash. [30:00] In the future, they would like to find a less invasive way to collect data, such as a mobile app. [32:39] Supporting the cause can be as simple as having a conversation with Jasmine and her team. [33:20] Charlie shares his final thoughts on the 3 ways he wants you to consider this episode.   Mentioned in This Episode: InVenture Wish for Wash Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor

The Lean Startup is a process for turning ideas into commercial ventures. Its premise is that startups begin with a series of untested hypotheses. They succeed by getting out of the building, testing those hypotheses and learning by iterating and refining minimal viable products in front of potential customers.
