Anne Chow: Lead Bigger Anne Chow was the CEO of AT&T Business and the first woman of color CEO in AT&T's 140+ year history, responsible for leading a $35B global operating unit of over 35,000 people. She was named to Fortune's Most Powerful Women in Business twice and today serves on a number of boards, including FranklinCovey, 3M, and CSX. She is the author of Lead Bigger: The Transformative Power of Inclusion. We all know the importance of values, but it's often hard to know where to begin when clarifying them with a team. In this conversation, Anne and I explore how to align on values that support a great culture and move towards a vision. Key Points Values and ideologies are distinct. Leading bigger means honoring diverse ideologies while aligning on core values. Bigger leaders have the courage to admit and cite situations where they fall short. When asking people to craft values, invite them to start by individually considering their personal values. When discussing values as a group, highlight both the common agreements and also the outlying ideas. Leaders must ultimately decide which values best embody the culture and vision of their organization. Bring in different stakeholders to do a gut check on whether the values are legitimate. Measure behaviors against values and review and update values and metrics regularly. „Společnost musí například zaplatit svým dodavatelům technologií, kteří uvedou věci do původního stavu. Stojí jí to platby za přesčasy vlastních zaměstnanců, kteří musejí leckdy pracovat i o víkendu. Existuje velké množství nepřímých nákladů, které ani nelze spočítat,“ konstatuje v podcastu HN Zdeněk Grmela, šéf kyberbezpečnosti ve společnosti T-Mobile, konkrétně její divizi T-Business, která radí firemním zákazníků.

Our featured guest is Trae Watlington, head of integrated strategy for AT&T Business at BBDO Worldwide. We may have Matthew McConaughey to thank for Trae Watlington's contributions to advertising and branding. After seeing a movie where the actor portrayed an ad executive, Trae realized that advertising might just be the coolest job out there (he's not wrong). He later went to school for advertising and public relations but then his career unexpectedly changed direction. Despite interning at agencies of all sizes in his early post grad years, Trae later landed a branding position that brought all of his favorite parts of advertising together. Now, Trae has come full circle and continues to infuse innovation into building brands from scratch, renovating existing brand architectures, and everything in between with the help of integrated strategy! Get excited because this episode is more than just alright, alright, alright. Guest Bio:Branding used to mean something very different to Trae, having grown up with a family who owned farmland in his native state of Texas. This “son of a preacher and a teacher” observed countless great examples of emotional intelligence at home. Since then he has found creative ways to lead teams to success simply by treating people how he would want to be treated. When he's not spending quality time with his wife and children, Trae can likely be found having a blast at a Garth Brooks concert.Key Takeaways:We discuss the blurred lines between branding and advertising into today's multi-channel marketplace. Trae teaches us about integrated strategy and why its key for making branding and advertising successful. Want to keep cross-departmental yet interconnected goals moving forward smoothly? Trae tells us how. We gab about how emotional intelligence plays into branding both on a business and on a personal level. We learn how Trae brings humanity into his leadership style.

In Part 2 of this 4 part series focused on the ‘Future of Work', we will discuss with Adrian Di Pietrantonio, Dubber's EVP of Global Platforms & Partners, what top challenges surfaced in this research, the most pressing organizational gaps that must be addressed, and what role Conversational Intelligence plays in addressing these critical issues.

I caught up with Sarita Rao, President of Integrated & Partner Solutions at AT&T Business, to talk about her new role, and the always-changing, ever-evolving technology ecosystem. Last time I spoke with Sarita back in April 2019 at the RSA security conference in San Francisco, she was in a very different role, so we kicked off with Sarita giving us a brief outline of her current role, one she's held for over a year now as President, Integrated & Partner Solutions for AT&T Business, and some of the key focus areas the role entails. We then discuss 5G and the amazing applications it has and will bring us, and in particular how 5G is just part of the bigger picture. Sarita shares her thoughts around why business leaders need to be looking at the whole ecosystem of Devices, IoT sensors, cloud-based solutions, all the way through to edge computing, and how all of these components are part of the “tech ecosystem” puzzle. We delve into what the phrase “tech ecosystem” means in Saritas' world, and what the essential components of that ecosystem actually are. Sarita also shares where she see parts of this particular ecosystem being overlooked, and what are business leaders missing in her view. I also ask Sarita how can business leaders should go about getting into the mindset of thinking about this ecosystem, rather than individual technologies, and how do the can get out of what in effect is often akin to having tunnel vision. We then look at how business leaders can ensure all the moving parts in their ecosystem will work together. We also talk about some of the business applications that this “tech ecosystem” Sarita speaks of now makes possible, such as Virtual Reality aka VR, and Augmented Reality aka AR, which are often see as being “just a few years away” it seems like, and yet we're already seeing more uptake now than ever, so I ask Sarita “is this the year this tech finally comes of age?”. Sarita goes on to share some examples of applications for VR and AR she and her team are seeing currently, such as enhancing customer experience aka CX, through to on-the-job training and many exciting innovations in between. Further to that, Sarita delves into what technologies do businesses need to take advantage of VR and AR. And finally, we wrap up with what Sarita sharing her views on what she and her team are seeing in the tech ecosystem, and what trends businesses should be focused on for a more successful 2022. Mr. Kumar also speaks to the operational realities and dilemma of speed vs safety and ethics vs loyalty. Memorable Ram Kumar Quotes/Statements It all starts at the top. The C-Suite must make cybersecurity an integral part of organizational strategic plans and priorities. Leadership commitment is a must, and it all starts from there. Leaders must commit to Security First mindset and not security as an afterthought. A cybersecurity governance model that starts and ends with CIS0/IT function is no longer enough. It is time to break down the barriers between IT, Security, and Operations, through education, collaboration, and outreach. It is tempting to think that cybersecurity is a technical issue. Throwing tools will not solve the problem. Emphasize ethics over loyalty. Business unit heads think security is the job of the CISO or IT function because they have work to do and are more focused on achieving their operational targets. They are not in the business of securing data and applications. But that doesn't mean that security can be a secondary play. Timestamps 1:35 – How do you get inter and intra-organizational buy-in for cybersecurity management? 7:14 – How do you get employees to recognize and commit to their respective roles in protecting critical data and other strategic assets? 19:04 – How do you effectively deal with the apparent conflict between the security team and the solutions development team? 30:44 – What kind of collaboration agreements can be put in place where even the third-party service providers have a stake in the game? 46:21 – Is there anything else that you wish to discuss? I caught up with Stacey Marx, President, National Business & Channels, AT&T Business on my podcast, to discuss the recent success stories around how AT&T Business have worked with and supported their customers through the last 12 to 18 months now leading up to, and during the global #COVID19 pandemic. In her role as president of National Business & Channels, Stacey leads a team of over six thousand professionals, dedicated to partnering with over three million small and medium business customers, to help them achieve growth and maximise their potential with technology innovation by leveraging the broad range of products & services AT&T Business can offer. In this fireside chat we cover some of the latest trends, business & technology challenges and opportunities small business operators should be considering as they look at the road forward coming out of a pandemic. We kicked off with my usual "get to know you", Stacey shares insights into her role, the remit and challenges of "a day in the life of Stacey Marx", as well as a look into what her business unit is responsible for, and some details around the team and ecosystem around them, and their customer base, giving us a great view of her world and the amazing depth and breadth of what she and her team bring to the market. Our conversation then delves into the challenges that businesses leaders, especially within small businesses, face in a post-pandemic world, and how technology is key to meeting these challenges, and specifically three key focus areas which I've been keen to discuss with Stacey for a while - including: #1 - The challenges SMB retail leaders face in a post-pandemic world In this segment I share that in my view, if there was one industry other than healthcare which has carried more than its fair share of the burden to see society through the last year and a half, surely it is the Retail sector. I also ask Stacy what challenges she and her team are seeing retailers in particular face as they plan now for a post-pandemic world, especially those small and medium-sized businesses who may have fewer resources. #2 - What can the Retail industry do to address these various challenges Around this key point, I ask Stacey where SMB players should be looking for ways and means to map their route out of their current state, to putting people, technology and telecommunications at the forefront of their strategic direction to address these key challenges. #3 - How is AT&T Business helping the Retail industry leverage its many offerings Here I share that I see one of the key challenges for Retailers, particularly for Small business retailers, are being challenged with, is finding the right Partner of Choice to help them gain access to and implement new technologies such as 5G, or ensure they have the right solutions in place for the likes of Cybersecurity, as these capabilities are not their core business. And I ask Stacey if she could share details around how is AT&T Business helping SMBs leverage your many business, technology & telecommunications offerings, and we look at a number of great customer stories, use cases and real world examples. We wrap up this great conversation with a view of what do Stacey thinks is coming over the horizon in the next 12 to 18 months, my classic "crystal ball gazing" question, and in particular what small business owners and or decision makers should be considering as they look to the short to medium term future. I caught up with Jason Inskeep, Director of the 5G Center of Excellence at AT&T Business, to discuss the latest trends, business & technology challenges and opportunities organisations should be talking about from within their board rooms down, both strategically and operationally. We kicked off with my usual "get to know you", Jason shared some amazing anecdotes and background from his early life, influences and key things which shaped his life, peers, mentors, and wonderful insights into his life growing up in a rural farm environment, and the solid foundations his parents and in particular his father gave him - all of which has clearly held him in good stead through his life so far, all of which I can relate to from my own life - we had a lot more in common than I had anticipated in fact, a very pleasant surprise. Our conversation then delved into three key focus areas which I've been keen to discuss with Jason for a while - including: #1 - What does “Mobility” mean inside the AT&T Business 5G Center of Excellence Our first key topic sees us delve into the broad topic of enterprise mobility - and by “mobility” we often immediately think of the smartphone B2C consumer handset market, but here we actually discuss key topics around the B2B space, in particular the value and impact digital cellular network mobility offers enterprise business consumers, looking to leverage 5G for edge networking and IIoT strategies. Jason also addresses how AT&T Business define mobility right now, and gives us a view into what some of the buzzy bits around enterprise mobility are, as well as the less well known value propositions, as well as clarity around what are perhaps the more important aspects for enterprise business to be aware of. And then with all of that in mind, I ask Jason to give us some insight into the impact and opportunities he and his team at AT&T Business are seeing across all industries and market segments, to help inform organisations looking to invest in mobility to gain business benefits from it. #2 - Key challenges businesses face in leveraging mobility solutions Here Jason shares a fantastic overview of what’s happening in the remote access, BYOD/endpoints/security, legacy 2G/3G etc, insights into what industry wide has been a massive need for real investment and attention in all of these in light of what this year has required with the likes of Work From Home or Service Workers on the front line be it in retail or healthcare and how AT&T Business as a whole and more specifically, now he and his team at the AT&T Business "5G Centre of Excellence" have address this space internally, and how they have supported customers through the year that has been 2020 and the various challenges it's presented thus far. #3 - Impact of 5G powered edge networks & vast IoT device networks Mobility now includes 5G powered edge networks & vast IoT device networks, here I discuss with Jason some examples of concrete use cases they are seeing currently such as video intelligence, etc. We also discuss a range of other potential use cases Jason thinks organisations should be looking to that they may not currently be taking advantage of, any outliers that he and his team are seeing which might not be immediately obvious but are high value opportunities with mobility. And we wrap up with a view of what do Jason thinks is coming over the horizon in the next 12 months, in particular what business & technology / telecommunications decision makers should be considering as they look to the short to medium term future. AT&T and VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, have launched a study that intends to combine 5G with virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) to test if it can help reduce chronic pain and anxiety for certain hospice patients. The study aims to assess a potential alternative therapy that is easier for caregivers to implement at a time and place that makes the patient most comfortable during this most difficult time. In this conversation we start with Zee let’s start with Zee Hussain giving us an update on how new & emerging technologies like 5G are opening up across the likes of the Financial Services Industry ( FSI ), Sports & Entertainment. We also discuss key topics around how specifically at Healthcare, and where are the biggest Digital & Mobile Transformation opportunities right now within the Healthcare industry. Patrick Hale also provides us, from his point of view as a CIO, what impact technology has had within VITAS over the last 5 years, in particular with patience experience. We're treated to some great insights from Zee around what lead to the opportunity for this collaboration, and what the actual VR Trial, it’s business & technical aims / goals etc were from the outset. Also shared, by Patric, is how the collaboration with AT&T Business came about - i.e. were VITAS already looking into VR technology prior to this collaboration with AT&T, what brought this 'match made in Heaven' about?". With his very unique position in that he literally live with his finger on the pulse every day around this space, Zee shares his views on where he sees the future of Digital Health evolving from a Service Providers point of view. I also ask Patrick what he sees as the larger potential for 5G at VITAS or in healthcare in general - for example how 5G will change the way clinicians treat patients - and does he envision 5G enabling a more mobile workforce. We wrap up with medium to long term views from my guests, regarding their views on upcoming trends, challenges, opportunities, key topics organisations should be talking about now from their Board rooms at strategy level all they way down to day to day operations, key things businesses should be actioning now, i.e. “orgs should be gearing up to have a 5G Strategy in place and be running PoC’s in 2020 and much more.

We discuss building employee advocates out of the workforce. Empowering people with skillset and permissions to build their personal brands on social and advocate for the brand. You might be reluctant as a brand but you're sitting on an army of support! Why hire a bunch of influencers when you have such a great team? We then chat about being a dad and in the workforce. It's great to be at a solid company when you have a family and have little turnover when you go home at the end of the day and not have to worry about going back into the office. John is building a platform talking about how to balance your work and still be a parent. We are on episode #24 and this week I have an amazing guest with me - Alex Cherones, Director of Threat and Virtual Security Services & Platform Development at AT&T. In his role as Director of Cybersecurity Threat Services, Virtual Security Functions, and Security Platform development, Alex helps create next-generation, Big Data-based cybersecurity platforms and managing the portfolio for threat services. Alex and his team lead innovation for products and services, along with elevating the customer experiences and user interfaces for AT&T Cybersecurity. Alex has more than ten years of experience with product development and product management, amounting to more than $6 billion in development responsibility and accountability. His experience combines technology, product, and finance across a variety of industries and overseeing cross-functional teams; including private equity fund management, fund creation, commercial real estate, corresponding disposition and turnaround restructuring. On this weeks episode Alex and I are discussing the cybersecurity risks, responses, and responsibilities that every individual and every organization now needs to deal with on a daily basis. During our conversation we explore the current state of cybersecurity, what are some of the cybersecurity challenges businesses are struggling with today, and how are businesses addressing these challenges? We also dig into what is the future of cybersecurity defense? How will it get better? And what are companies like AT&T doing to help combat the problem? AT&T Business has become one of the fastest growing managed security services providers in the industry, because AT&T has made cybersecurity a top focus. Investments related to advanced threat detection and analysis, threat intelligence and virtualized security functions give customers more flexibility in how they deploy security solutions. AT&T’s cybersecurity solutions help secure the assets of businesses ranging from small to large, global enterprises. According to IDC’s Marketscape Managed Security Services 2017 Vendor Assessment, AT&T has advanced to the Leader category. Armed with threat intelligence from their network security analysts and other market sources, AT&T’s cybersecurity consultants assess cybersecurity risks to a business, based on its business model, market sector, technical infrastructure, cloud strategy, vendor relationships and operational dynamics. They then recommend targeted risk management strategies, products and services. Several hundred cybersecurity professionals work across both the AT&T Business ecosystem and its Chief Security Organization to protect customers from increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks. AT&T secures more connections than any other communications company in North America. They provide highly-secure connections to more than 143.8 million mobility customers in the U.S. and nearly 3 million businesses worldwide, with more than 41 million connected devices on their network as of Q1 2018. Custom Made

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2018 47:38

Welcome to episode #017 of Custom Made and today I’m joined again by Sarah Reid, Vice President of Design Research here at Dialexa. Sarah is a Product Designer whose fascination with how design and psychology interact has led her on a relentless pursuit to shape user experiences that enable elegant solutions to complex problems. Her specialties in web and UX design include layout, interaction and aesthetic design for websites and software products. Prior to joining Dialexa, Sarah leveraged her love of design thinking to design administration tools for AT&T Business to Business Services and game art for GameStop's PC download business. Most notably, Sarah worked for a healthcare industry software provider where she used her UX problem solving and process improvement skills to streamline online interactions that contained a massive amount of user information, options, decisions, complex rules and restrictions. The only precedent to an application in this industry was paying someone to sort through spreadsheets and faxing the paperwork. Sarah is someone who is concerned with the why of a product, workflow and User Experience. And, she is a fan of pragmatic research work to enable her to provide insights in a fast and smart manner - which is exactly what we are going to be discussing today. On this weeks episode Sarah and I are discussing why you need to take a pragmatic view to user research, so that you understand just enough to move forward with your product development rather than spend too much time on research that slows down the product development process, or no research at all that leads to unsuccessful products. Successful products come from understanding the user needs, their pains, and their experiences that the product is trying to deliver against. But research is still seen by many as either an area to cut from the product development process, leads to analysis paralysis or would rather move forward on assumptions based on historical data points or opinion. Typically we first encounter Research in school with research papers - learning about a topic through the systematic investigation into, and study of, materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions - and then writing a report about it. But in the real-world, this approach is not always practical, and research needs to take a different, more agile, approach if it is to be successfully applied to product development. During this weeks episode, we are going to explore the three main types of research to inform your product development and define what “just-enough” means. These three types are: - User Research - Market Research - And Design Research And before you say it, don’t get me wrong, successful products can be created by following your gut and intuition. The many successes of Steve Jobs are because of this - though the less discussed product failures are also based on gut and intuition as well. But you don’t get a good gut and intuition without being immersed in the world you are designing for. You must know about the people and their behaviors as well have the vision and strategy to bring about change. You need to build experience - and by following the advice Sarah shares in this episode, you will be on your way to building that experience to have an informed opinion...or gut!
