Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2025 2:59

“Procurement is at the point where they're trying to figure out next steps on digitization, and it will be an immediate priority for everyone in the next couple of years.” - Gordon Donovan, Vice President of Research - Procurement and External Workforce at SAP It is Gordon Donovan's job to read every single piece of research that's published on procurement, the workforce, and the supply chain. More importantly, it is his job to figure out what it means. As he told Philip Ideson, “I've got the best job in the world.”  All of this information gives Gordon a deep and comprehensive view of the global procurement landscape and the challenges and opportunities that it presents.  In this episode, Philip draws on Gordon's depth of knowledge to discuss the findings of SAP's recently published Economist Impact report, as well as what the research tells us about procurement's vision, priorities, and opportunities for the future.  Listen in to hear Gordon and Phil discuss the report, which included some surprising findings, as well as: Why digitization tops the list of procurement's most important priorities How procurement can handle increased complexity and workloads, even as headcounts remain stagnant Procurement's AI maturity journey and where they are on the path to acceptance and adoption compared to other business functions Links: Subscribe to This Week in Procurement Gordon Donovan on LinkedIn Read the 2024 Sap Economist Impact Report Listen to Gordon Donovan in a previous episode: From C-Suite Priority to Procurement  Unpacking SAP's 2024 Economist Impact Report Strategy: Managing Risk at Scale

On March 14th 2023 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposal to establish legally enforceable levels for six types of ‘forever chemicals' known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It is expected to prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of serious illnesses attributable to PFAS. The rule would require public water systems to monitor PFAS levels, notify the public of these and reduce them if exceeding the proposed standards. Developed over several years and grounded in the authority that the EPA has from US Congress, through the Safe Drinking Water Act, the goal is to issue a final PFAS drinking water standard by the end of 2023 or early 2024. This will result in a standard to which all water systems in the US must adhere.Sarah Doll, national director for Safer States, an NGO fighting pollution, speaks to Naka Kondo, the lead editor of Back to Blue about the significance of the EPA proposal to limit PFAS in US drinking water - and what needs to happen next.Follow the Back to Blue series for more podcast episodes, or visit backtoblueinitiative.com for more content.Back to Blue is an initiative of Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation. Charles Darwin once dismissed the ocean as a ‘tedious waste, a desert of water.' Some of his contemporaries disagreed. The brave Challenger expedition of the 1870s set out to discover what lurked beneath, traversing over 100,000 kilometres and discovered 4,772 specimens, from sea snails to snake eels, discovered the deepest trench on earth, and toppled false assumptions about the lack of life under the waves. Over a century later, the Census of Marine Life picked up the baton. An eighty-country collaboration, with 2,700 scientists, the project identified another 6,000 species. Yet even these numbers are a literal drop in the ocean. Oliver Steeds, Ocean Census director and chief executive of Nekton, a UK-based marine science and conservation institute, speaks to Naka Kondo, the lead editor of Back to Blue initiative about a new mission, the Ocean Census, launches this year with a far greater ambition: to find at least 100,000 new marine species in its first decade.Follow the Back to Blue series for more podcast episodes, or visit backtoblueinitiative.com for more content.Back to Blue is an initiative of Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation. In this podcast we are going global and focusing the conversation around the findings of a new report published recently by Economist Impact called Infrastructure for Good – Building for a better world. The report has been produced in association with Duke University in the US and is supported by global consultancy Deloitte. There's a link to the report in the resources section below.Essentially the report points out that while infrastructure is a transformational investment for supporting growth and social development and touches nearly all of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), around the world this investment delivers widely divergent outcomes. In short, without proper planning and a clear understanding of the factors behind this divergence, infrastructure can actually increase rather than reduce global inequality. To guide us through this report, the conclusions and its recommendations, and of course to explain how it has been possible to properly understand how infrastructure investment value can be benchmarked, I am joined today from New York by Pratima Singh, Principal in Policy & Insights at Economist Impact, one of the report authors and an expert in the economic and social drivers from infrastructure investment.ResourcesInfrastructure for Good reportInfrastructure for Good websiteCase studiesThe Barometer dataInfrastructure for good - the methodology

Against a backdrop of economic headwinds, peaking inflation and ongoing geopolitical tension, the world looks uncertain for business and particularly for procurement. Whilst the Economist Intelligence Unit is forecasting global inflation and supply chain disruptions to ease over the year, they also expect supply chain diversification to remain front of mind for business. These conditions create opportunities for procurement as a function to redefine, refine and progress. However, this may not be an easy task. A 2023 Economist Impact survey, sponsored by SAP, shows that the majority of C-suite executives have relatively low levels of confidence in procurement's ability to effectively work with the rest of the business to deliver on the company's strategic objectives. Though, the same C-level executives believe that the procurement function is at the centre of a business' ability to effectively manage risk. Drawing on the expertise of Baber Farooq, Lisa Martin and Kelly Barner, Elizabeth Mackie will dive into the detail of the opportunities these changing global dynamics are creating for procurement to answer the following questions:What are the impacts of global disruptions, such as inflation and geopolitical tensions on procurement, and why does this matter?Do opportunities exist from this disruption? If so, where are they and what needs to be done for procurement to capitalise on them? With more ambitious ESG objectives becoming the rule rather than the exception, what opportunities exist for procurement from a greater focus on ESG and decarbonisation? What does all of this mean for the rest of the business?"Opportunities for procurement in uncertain times" is a podcast series supported by SAP.This episode is hosted by Elizabeth Mackie, Senior Manager, Trade at Economist Impact. As child abuse professionals, you've probably wondered how the U.S. and, in fact, your state stack up on child sexual abuse prevention and intervention. The Out of the Shadows Index aims to answer that question by examining the legal framework, public policy, and also investments by states and countries. In today's episode, we speak with Araceli Irurzun Pérez, research analyst at Economist Impact and a lead researcher on the Out of the Shadows report. As you will hear, the results are a bit surprising and turn upside down assumptions that we might have about the landscape within and across states. Are these responses predictable by political affiliation? Nope. Or exclusively about financial resources? No, sir. And yet, one of the chief findings was that, while Children's Advocacy Centers bear much of the burden for child sexual abuse prevention and intervention in the U.S.—and, indeed, in every state—they are woefully under-resourced.Want a roadmap to improve child sexual abuse prevention and intervention in your state?
