This podcast interview focuses on the entrepreneurial journey of turning transparency into business advantage. My guest is Zach Wasserman, Cofounder and Tech Evangelist of Fleet.  With over a decade of experience in open source software development, Zach helped create the widely-adopted OSquery project at Facebook in 2014, which has since become an industry standard for device visibility and is now governed by the Linux Foundation. After transitioning through a role at Kolide (later acquired by 1Password), Zach became the maintainer of a project that would eventually evolve into Fleet. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Zach discovered that what truly energizes him is "building software that's making someone's life better" - specifically IT administrators and security professionals who manage company devices. This human-centered approach led him to transform a personal passion project into a rapidly growing company that's challenging traditional business models in enterprise software This inspired me to invite Zach to my podcast. We explore how being open source gives Fleet a strategic edge. His approach rejects the common belief that enterprise sales requires complexity and secrecy. We discuss how community building leads to faster adoption and better results than traditional sales tactics. The formula is simple: be transparent, earn trust, and close deals faster. Here's one of his quotes: "The best way to lose a deal is to our own open source product, because those people remain prime prospective customers that we really need to continue to understand and figure out how we are going to build enough new value in that premium product for them to want to pay for it." By listening to this podcast, you will learn: How building on existing open source foundations can give startups immediate credibility with enterprise customers Why passionate early adopters can close deals remarkably easily compared to traditional prospects The entrepreneurial wisdom of identifying and connecting with actual budget holders while still maintaining engineer enthusiasm How customer-driven unexpected use cases can dramatically expand your market vision and product roadmap For more information about the guest from this week:  Guest: Zach Wasserman  Website: fleet.com Learn more about your ad choices. In an era where cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated and devastating, organizations can no longer afford to treat cybersecurity as the sole responsibility of their security teams. This episode of the Pure Report features industry veterans Jason Walker, Tech Strategy Director of Cyber Resilience, and Jason Langer, Tech Evangelist, to explore why cyber resilience must be approached as a team sport, breaking down the traditional silos between IT operations and security teams. Drawing from their extensive experience in data protection and security, the two Jasons delve into the stark realities of cyber impacts, including the sobering statistic that one in five organizations report employee terminations following outages. They examine the NIST Cybersecurity Framework through a collaborative lens, offering insights into how different teams can work together across the five key areas: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. Through real-world examples and strategic discussions, listeners will develop a deeper understanding of why alignment between IT leaders and CISOs is crucial for building true cyber resilience. As organizations grapple with evolving threats, this timely discussion during Cybersecurity Awareness Month offers actionable strategies for fostering cross-team collaboration. The episode explores the evolution of cybersecurity conversations over the past five years, provides practical advice for improving security posture through teamwork, and highlights Pure Storage's role in enabling organizations to build robust cyber resilience strategies. Whether you're an IT professional, security specialist, or business leader, this episode provides valuable insights into transforming your organization's approach to cybersecurity from a siloed responsibility to a collaborative effort. In this episode from last year, we spoke to Aravind Putrevu. Aravind is a developer advocate turned angel investor, but to leave it at just that would be a disservice. He has his fingers in many pies, including DevRel consulting, where he helps companies with their product marketing and strategy. And of course, as any good DevRel or engineer should, he also has an itch to build something valuable, so he's working on a SaaS tool that he's still keeping in stealth mode. Aravind speaks to us about his transition from DevRel to angel investing and his propensity for startups and working with founders. When it comes to the world of consulting, Aravind walks us through his role with a company, from strategy, to marketing, to introducing their brand to the public as a DevRel. He speaks about the culture of DevRel, how all too often a singular person gets hired to do the work of an entire DevRel team, both code and community, and how this overload leads to the inevitable cycle of burnout that he sees frequently. We also chat to him about his work as a senior developer advocate at Elasticsearch, where he had the benefit of a large developer team working with a popular product that had insane traction. He says that Elasticsearch is a classic example of how DevRel can work when the founders are the first developer advocates. Aravind is also a speaker who has given talks at many large conferences, and he tells us a little about how he coordinates a team where five people have all signed up to speak at the same conference. A happy problem to have! In this episode, Bill sits down with Alex Merced, Senior Tech Evangelist at Dremio, to explore the evolution of data lakehouses and their role in bridging the gap between data lakes and data warehouses. Alex breaks down the components of data lakehouses and dives into the rise of Apache Iceberg.---------Key Quotes:“I love just get really deep into technology, really see what it does. And then scream at the rooftops how cool it is. And basically that was my charter. And [Apache] Iceberg, the more I learned about it, the more I realized this is really interesting.”“Interoperability and data. Basically, a lot of the things that kept data in silos is now breaking apart.”"So here we're talking about something that's going to be a standard. And that's when I think of the highest levels of openness matter because if it's something that a whole industry is going to build on, it should be something that the whole industry has to say in its evolution…And that's the beauty of openness that it does create these nice sort of places where we can collaborate and compete together.”--------Timestamps: (01:32) How Alex got started in his career(03:54) Breaking down data lakehouses(07:08) The idea behind an open data lakehouse(10:10) Alex's involvement with Apache Iceberg(15:13) Key components of a data lakehouse(23:41) The growth of Apache Iceberg(32:07) Dremio's Apache Iceberg crash course(38:43) Explaining self-service analytics--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. How can businesses navigate the complexities of cloud costs while maximizing value across their operations? In this episode, we welcome Aviram Levy, Tech Evangelist at Zesty, to explore the current state of cloud usage and waste, and how companies can effectively manage and reduce these costs. With nearly two decades of experience in IT and cloud technology, Aviram offers valuable insights into the challenges that businesses face when transitioning to the cloud's on-demand model. He sheds light on the common pitfalls, such as the lack of visibility into cloud consumption, which often leads to unexpected and inflated bills. Aviram discusses the critical role of FinOps in cloud cost optimization, explaining how dedicated teams and processes can bridge the gap between engineering and finance. He highlights best practices for implementing FinOps strategies, including the use of tools and automation to gain better visibility into cloud usage and to drive efficiency across cloud operations.  With economic volatility adding to the unpredictability of cloud costs, Aviram emphasizes the importance of proactive management and strategic planning. At the heart of this discussion is Zesty's innovative approach to cloud cost optimization. Aviram introduces Zesty's solutions, which provide real-time visibility into cloud usage and offer automated recommendations to reduce waste and optimize resources. He alsoexplains how Zesty's automation engines can dynamically scale resources based on demand, ensuring that businesses only pay for what they truly need. Additionally, the newly launched platform, "Insights," is designed to help organizations prioritize and automate optimization opportunities, making cloud management more efficient and cost-effective. Looking to the future, Aviram shares his vision for the next wave of cloud cost optimization, which will include deep tech solutions tailored to specific workloads like databases and containers. He also discusses the growing importance of multi-cloud support and the continuous advancements in automation that will further enhance cloud efficiency. The use of large language models (LLMs) has become widespread, but there are significant security risks associated with them. LLMs with millions or billions of parameters are complex and challenging to fully scrutinize, making them susceptible to exploitation by attackers who can find loopholes or vulnerabilities. On an episode of The New Stack Makers, Chris Pirillo, Tech Evangelist and Lance Seidman, Backend Engineer at Atomic Form discussed these security challenges, emphasizing the need for human oversight to protect AI systems. One example highlighted was malicious AI models on Hugging Face, which exploited the Python pickle module to execute arbitrary commands on users' machines. To mitigate such risks, Hugging Face implemented security scanners to check every file for security threats. However, human vigilance remains crucial in identifying and addressing potential exploits.Seidman also stressed the importance of technical safeguards and a culture of security awareness within the AI community. Developers should prioritize security throughout the development life cycle to stay ahead of evolving threats. Overall, the message is clear: while AI offers remarkable capabilities, it requires careful management and oversight to prevent misuse and protect against security breaches.Learn more from The New Stack about AI and security:  Artificial Intelligence: Stopping the Big Unknown in Application, Data Security Cyberattacks, AI and Multicloud Hit Cybersecurity in 2023Will Generative AI Kill DevSecOps?  Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

If you're in any way curious about the intersection between APIs and AI, and what that might be shaping up to look like, then we're delighted to let you know that this episode's guest is the perfect person to shed light on that very topic. Frank is the Principal API Tech Evangelist for SmartBear, where they deliver tools for application performance monitoring, software development, software testing, API testing and API management. In 2010, APIs were starting to become more popular and Frank was starting to get serious about creating reusable interfaces. He continued down this path and has spent the last 2 years with SmartBear, focusing on APIs, for which they have 3 pillars: testing, insights and observability. Frank tells us about SmartBear's growing interest in acquisitions, and how they've managed to balance this facet with their continuing investment in their own organic products. Their strategy is simple: build and buy. And it seems to be working out pretty well for them. We talk a lot on the podcast about marketing to developers, both internally and externally, but Frank brings up an interesting point. Almost every company used software in some way, for something. So while he and SmartBear still value developer focused marketing, they also understand that there's a whole world of non-technical people out there that have many of the same problems. And Frank knows that he and his team can be the ones to help fix them. Then, in 2019 a shift happened, and she started steering her legal career towards consulting and technology.  In this episode, we explore that shift. We talk about how and why she opted out of the partnership track and how she embarked upon a very deliberate and brave path of career reinvention. We discuss:  The very sensible and conventional start to her legal career; Why she decided law firm partnership was not for her; How she embraced the “desert of reinvention” and claimed her space in the Australian legal tech ecosystem; How she built her strong personal brand and thought leadership, including how she wrote her brilliant book, the Tech Enabled Lawyer; Her thoughts on Chat GPT and what it is actually good for;  The definition of “tech evangelist” and “knowledge management” and ideas that anyone can implement in their own workplaces; And much more. I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.  You can find Fiona on Linked In here and check out McLay Legal Consulting at: https://www.mclaylegal.com/  and buy a copy of her brilliant Tech Enabled Lawyer at Booktopia here. In this episode, we're taking a break from our artistic stint of authors and podcast hosts, and moving back into solid DevRel territory with our guest Aravind Putrevu.
