Three weeks after accepting a new role as an American Airlines spokeswoman in 1995, Jennifer R. Hudson was paged out of bed in the middle of the night. The worst had happened. Flight 965 had disappeared in the mountains of Colombia, and Jennifer needed to report to the scene of the crash to coordinate the company's public relations response. Unnerved and uncertain, she had to push aside her doubts and power through what would become one of the most harrowing experiences of her career. Jennifer would go on to serve as a Vice President of Communications for British Airways, a PR Manager at the Sabre Group, and eventually the head of her own independent agency, Think Beyond PR. But the experience of immersing herself in a tragedy that cost 159 lives sticks with her to this day, forging a set of PR instincts and resolve that have served her well. And in the wake of recent air disasters, including the American Eagle 5342 tragedy in Washington, her story offers rare insights into what's happening behind the scenes right now. ----- You can learn more about the crash of Flight 965 in this episode of Mayday. They first crossed paths in 1978 when Kyra Sedgwick was 12 and Kevin Bacon 19, though he doesn't remember it! The pre-teen complimented the young actor after seeing Kevin perform in an Off-Broadway play. Ten years later the two were married, and they've remained happily so for 36 years. Just ask the goats they occasionally serenade when posting Instagram videos from their Connecticut farm. In this fun Valentine's week episode, we share the love story of Hollywood couple Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, including a few highlights from their individual lives and careers. How did Kevin convince Kyra, his somewhat reluctant movie costar, to go on a first date with him? When Kyra was hesitant to do “The Closer,” how did Kevin help make it possible for Kyra to accept what would turn out to be her most acclaimed role? What devastating personal crisis did the Bacons experience in 2008? And in which projects have the couple collaborated not only with each other but also occasionally with one or both of their children? We discuss all this and more in this uplifting episode that will leave you feeling “Footloose” and fancy-free!

Welcome back to Artbeat Radio! Today, relax and listen to our re-imagined lyrics and original soundscape. For this first project, the Artbeat Radio class at CECA chose to rewrite Alicia Key's hit song, “If I Ain't Got You” but with a sweet twist. Service users in the class provided input and feedback on their favorite desserts, ultimately deciding the main theme of the song would be, “If I Ain't Got Ice Cream.” Service users wrote the lyrics and decided on the tempo of the song, key, and instrumentation. As you listen to the recording you will hear Jesus Q. open the song with a spelling of the word “ice cream” while Juliet R. joyfully laughs in the background. Maria G. and Michael H. sing loudly through the verses and chorus before the whole class breaks into an instrumental solo section. Maria G., Michael H., and Jesus Q. take turns soloing on the piano, Juliet R. and Jesus Q. hit the drum, and service users in class all take turns playing the shaker. The students then close out the tune with a loud chorus of "yum!" “Dreaming of Ice Cream” Some people live for trés leches Some people live for apple pie Some people eat dessert for breakfast like mermelada on French toast Some people think pizza Enchiladas and chips Are the only way to go And I've had them before But they just don't compare To that magical food Some people want it all But I don't want nothing at all If it ain't you, ice cream If I ain't got you, ice cream Some people want carrot cake Some just want everything But everything means nothing If I ain't got ice cream Some people search for a milk shake They like to drink them Some people need three dozen flavors Others just want pink shaved ice Some people think pizza Enchiladas and chips Are the only way to go And I've had them before But they just don't compare To that magical food Some people want it all But I don't want nothing at all If it ain't you, ice cream If I ain't got you, ice cream Some people want carrot cake Some just want everything But everything means nothing If I ain't got ice cream "Oceanic Soundscape" Soundscapes are musical compositions that encompass natural-occurring sounds from specific environments. CECA service users worked collaboratively to create this ocean soundscape featuring percussive and wind instrument recordings combined with environmental sounds to create the breezy and oscillating effects one experiences while visiting the ocean. Instruments such as the ocean drum, native flute, rain stick, and tone blocks were utilized by service users PJ (Lawrence W. III), Kyuta S. , Norberta C., and Jennifer R. to build a soundscape transporting the listener to their ideal beach visit. Service users explored layering and looping techniques to create desired musical effects contributing to the overarching goal of transporting anyone listening to a peaceful, beach day. In today's podcast I am sharing an interview that I participated in with The EFT Tapping Training Institute in collaboration with Suzanne Fageol and Dr. Craig Weiner from Tapping Out of Trauma Continuing Education Seminars called using EFT tapping for traumatic grief. EFT stands for the Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional problems for over 5,000 years, but without any of needles. Instead, it allows an individual to simply tap using their fingertips to apply energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while thinking about specific problems or struggles. EFT can be used in a variety of circumstances and is often used to change negative feelings, reduce self-limiting beliefs, change repetitive unwanted behaviors and is even effective for working with and resolving traumatic memories. It is also commonly used to create positive emotional states, achieve desired goals, and attain higher states of health, well-being, and resilience. Today's podcast provides information for EFT practitioners who might encounter clients who are living with traumatic grief so that they will be better prepared to respond to the needs of individuals who have experienced an unexpected death. However, it also provides a great review of some of the foundational concepts related to traumatic grief. To learn more about EFT tapping training institute you can visit EFTtappingtraining.com or visit our Facebook page talking about the podcast untethered with Dr. Levin. Our next podcast will be on March 15th and will be an anonymous interview with a young woman who experienced the death of her partner from alcoholism. She has asked that both her and her partner's identities remain anonymous for family privacy and the stigma that often surrounds death related to addiction. Jackson is suspected of committing several more murders during the 1970s and 1980s around the Oakland area, in which at least 5 other serial killers were also operating at the same time. This week we have Anne Kiefer, who joined us to speak poetically on her beloved city of New Orleans, and how the its festive spirits have been sadly dampened by the pandemic. Anne also went through COVID-19 at the age of 75, which was doubly harrowing because her doctors were unsure how to treat the illness back in early spring. She of course survived, and is now a cheerful plasma donor. We are also joined by Anne's daughter Jennifer to add appreciated context and commentary. Pictured: Anne (L) and her daughter, Jennifer (R)
"I wrote a 55-word story in solidarity with my medical students and colleagues I had invited to share their lived experiences during COVID-19 on our Stories in Medicine blog. I wrote out of a need to “unmask” the guilt and angst of some of my colleagues and myself who, though practicing physicians, do not find ourselves directly on the front lines during these tumultuous times. Rather, we are dismayed to alternate between waves of anguish and guilt. Anguish for the suffering of our brothers and sisters in places like New York and New Orleans. Guilt, for not being shoulder to shoulder on the front lines. Guilt, because we are able to do things to take care of ourselves and our families in ways others are not. Our hearts break for our colleagues and families, their patients, and the families of their patients. We can only try to imagine a small portion of what they have gone through and will go through in the aftermath." Jennifer R. Hartmark-Hill is a family physician. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Confessions in the time of COVID-19." (https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2020/05/confessions-in-the-time-of-covid-19.html)

In this episode of the Spine & Nerve podcast, Dr. Brian Joves and Dr. Nicolas Karvelas discuss the age old question... whether or not to pursue a repeat epidural steroid injection (ESI) for the possibility of cumulative effect. Historically there was a time when it was fairly common practice to order a pre-determined series of ESIs. Over time, based on analysis of the research performed, and based on clinical experience, taking a more nuanced approach has proven to be the recommendation of most pain societies. Listen as the doctors discuss some of the available literature, as well as their clinical experience regarding this high yield / practical topic. Show notes & links available here. In this episode, I'm speaking to Dr. Jennifer Levin, a marriage and family therapist who specializes in health crises or transitions, especially related to traumatic grief and loss. We discuss ways to support others, particularly children, and promote growth after trauma. Big Ideas Traumatic grief is an unexpected, sudden loss that people experience. Sudden, devastating events can cause a great deal of grief, trauma, and stress. People experience post-traumatic growth when their life changes significantly for the better due to the experience they had with the trauma. There are four areas wherein people experience post-traumatic growth: deeper relationships increased personal strength positive spiritual changes stronger appreciation for life in general Kids and adults react differently to grief and trauma. Kids tend to float in and out, whereas adults may get stuck in deep sadness and experience more of the traumatic symptoms. The first thing to do for children after a traumatic loss is to assure safety and reestablish some normalcy and a sense of routine and structure. Helpful tools for kids are sensory-based activities, mindfulness skills, guided imagery, and visualizations. We can help them learn how to take control of their situation and give them positive feedback and praise when they use a great coping skill. Make sure children are exposed to positive relationships with other supportive adults in their lives. Especially in the case of loss, it is important for families to keep talking about their feelings. Memory Bowl Tip: keep a bowl and a stack of index cards in an accessible place. Any time you have a memory of the person, the dog, the loved one who has died, you write it down on the card and put it in the bowl. Then, when you're having a tough grieving day or on an occasion when the family is together, everyone can read the memories that are in the bowl. This is a great way to keep memories and family times together alive. Quotes Jennifer: "It's pretty amazing watching someone come in right after a loss, working through them to address both the trauma and grief and then having them say, 'Oh my goodness, I think I've grown in (this way)' and to be able to focus on that." Audrey: "Unfortunately, we are inevitably going to face grief of some kind. It's hopeful to think that it doesn't have to lead to disaster." Audrey: "Many of us have been blindsided by the experiences that kids share with us in the camp or school setting, where they share something really hard that they have gone through." Jennifer: "Right after an immediate loss that's been traumatic, the first thing to do is to assure safety, establish some normalcy and a sense of routine when the world feels chaotic and out of control." Jennifer: "We see behavioral problems come up, problems with sleep, academics, friends, when there is no routine or structure or normalcy." Jennifer: "Containment may not necessarily lead to post-traumatic growth, but more stabilization, which is the first thing we have to do before we can start addressing trauma and grief." Jennifer: "Post-traumatic growth is something that happens over a significant period of time and adults can play a huge role in decreasing the chances that a child will have longterm difficulties and increasing the chances for post-traumatic growth." Jennifer: "Sometimes we have to say, 'I'm not sure how this is going to play out in the future, but right now you are safe. I got you. You're okay. I love you. All of your needs can be met right now.' This gives them a really strong foundation for growth." Jennifer: "One thing that goes without saying is parents and adults have to take care of themselves first before they are able to give this to kids. Kids are able to tell when it's inauthentic, insincere, and when the parents are running on empty." Jennifer: "Positive relationships with adults help foster post-traumatic growth. If it's not a parent, then its a teacher, a coach, a religious figure." Jennifer: "Kids and adults react differently to grief and trauma. I think it's wonderful that kids can float in and out, in and out, and when they're in the moment, the feelings are intense, difficult, scary and overwhelming. But again, with the right support and encouragement, they're going to transition out and be okay." Jennifer: "We as adults have such a role in teaching our kids how to express themselves, how to get these feelings out, and then how to cope with them." Audrey: "Usually if a child is grieving about something, usually the adults who are closest to them are also grieving. Getting outside help is so important, even if your child appears to be fine. For them to be aware that these feelings may come up at any time and there are resources for them. That's a really important thing." Jennifer: "Grief is such a unique experience for every person, every family. Everybody in a family grieves differently. I'm really big on acknowledgment, an adult acknowledging that they're sad or grieving, that they're fearful--that's the very first step." Jennifer: "Acknowledge the pain. I think it's great for your kids to see you cry. It's great for them to see you express emotion and for you to say, 'Mom is really sad right now, but I'm okay. You're okay and we're going to be okay.' Then talk about that." Jennifer: "Checking in is important because it gives the message, 'I'm here if you want to talk and if you don't, that's okay.' So what you do is monitor other things: Are they socializing with their friends? Are they doing well in school? Are they sleeping? Are they eating? Are they doing extracurricular activities? When you start to see issues there, then that's a red flag. Even though they're not talking about the grief, it's definitely impacting them." Jennifer: "We grieve the way we live. If we're someone who doesn't share our feelings very often, then when we experience grief we are not all of a sudden going to become someone who talks about all of our feelings." Audrey: "Keep talking about the person. Some people think it's better not to bring the person up but the last thing that someone who is grieving wants is for people to forget the person who was so important to them." A talk-back with the cast of You Better Sit Down: Tales from My Parents' Divorce kicks off this week's episode. The show, which recently completed its New York premiere at the Flea Theater, featured actors Matt Maher, Caitlin Miller, Jennifer R. Morris, and Robbie Collier Sublett, who all interviewed their parents, and each plays his or her own parent (or parents). In the talk-back, they discuss the process of creating the show, talking about these topics with their parents, and their parents' reactions to the show. Then, The Flea Theater's resident acting company, The Bats, presents a short piece created from online and live audience responses that they put together during You Better Sit Down and performed after the play on the same night. Next is a monologue crafted from responses by our R&D Group artist Mia Rovegno and performed by Associate Artist Dan Domingues. The episode closes out with a song written and performed by Matt Berger. The Civilians' first show ever was Canard, Canard, Goose, created in 2001 to explore alleged geese abuse in the Adirondacks. The investigation, inspired by a rumor about the geese in the feature film Fly Away Home, brought up questions about home, truth, and how we know we know - all themes that were particularly relevant for these New York artists in the post-9/11 winter of 2001. This episode is the concert version of the entire show performed at Joe's Pub in 2011 for our tenth anniversary season performed by Aysan Celik, Matthew Dellapina, Greg McFadden, Jennifer R. Morris, Brandon Miller, Caitlin Miller, and Maria Elena Ramirez. Jenny and Aysan were members of the original cast in 2002. The play includes songs by Michael Friedman, and marks the first show for which he ever wrote songs.
