Bryan Kohberger's Defense Found Unknown DNA at the Murder Scene — The Real Killer?

The Idaho murders case ended with a guilty plea, and it still won't sit quietly — because a loud corner of the internet is certain Bryan Kohberger was framed. In this one, we go straight at the forensic theories and pull them apart. The center of it all is a knife sheath left in a young woman's bed and the male DNA found on its snap. Theorists need that DNA to be a tiny, plantable speck. The lab says the opposite — there was so much of it that the amount itself is the problem for the defense, not the prosecution. We unpack what touch DNA actually is and why a single-source profile on that snap is so hard to explain away. Then the harder cards: an unidentified man's blood on a stairway, a DNA mixture under a victim's fingernails with no match to Kohberger, the untested debris, and the accusation that the FBI built a false trail and misled a judge. We take each one seriously, then show why none of it outweighs a man's own skin on the weapon — the weapon his own account ordered online. This isn't a recap. It's a point-by-point answer to the questions that keep this case alive, told in plain language for the people who actually want them answered. Was he set up, or is the truth just simpler than anyone wants it to be?END_LINKS:Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Stephen C. Meyer has a PhD from Cambridge in the philosophy of science, and he thinks AI just handed him his strongest argument yet. I spent years pushing back on him. Today I laid three traps. Watch what he does with the third one. Subscribe if you want science with evidence, not speculation. Meyer is a philosopher of science and director of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute. His argument: every large language model is trained on text produced by conscious agents, and when you query its own outputs iteratively, it collapses into incoherence. That dependency, he says, is a tell. AI can recombine information. It cannot originate it. And that distinction points, in his view, to something minds do that matter alone cannot explain. I push back on all of it. We go after the Oklo reactor, a natural nuclear fission reactor that ran for millions of years in Africa two billion years ago with no human input whatsoever. I ask whether that breaks his information-from-mind argument. He sees the trap before I spring it, concedes the point where concession is honest, and explains exactly where the threshold lies. We also get into the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and Vilenkin's admission that quantum cosmology may require a mind predating the universe, the junk DNA prediction that Meyer's team made in the '90s before the ENCODE project confirmed it, and why beauty in physics can lead a field astray. What you'll hear: - Why model collapse is Meyer's strongest argument and where it has limits - The Oklo reactor trap and what Meyer's honest answer reveals about design detection - What Vilenkin actually said about a mind predating the universe - Whether intelligent design makes testable predictions or only retrodictions - The junk DNA call and what the ENCODE project found - Why beauty as a guide to physics has produced mathematical castles in the air Stephen Meyer thinks AI proves minds can't be reduced to matter. Is model collapse evidence of design, or is it just bad training data? Athenian Democracy provides innovative readings of ancient theorists to reveal both the complexity of democracy's achievements and its limits. In Athenian Democracy: Modern Mythmakers and Ancient Theorists (U Notre Dame Press, 2026), noted political scientist Arlene W. Saxonhouse offers fresh and provocative explorations of ancient political theorists, lending new insights about democracy's foundations and principles. These insights are more relevant than ever in a moment when the viability of democratic regimes is under scrutiny. Saxonhouse provides an in-depth discussion of the modern mythmakers (Hobbes, Paine, Hamilton, Mill, and Arendt, among others) who, in praising or excoriating Athenian democracy, have in fact distorted it to support their own assessments of democracy. She then offers detailed reinterpretations of the writings on democracy of four ancient theorists who had directly experienced life in the first democratic regime: Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, and Aristotle. Saxonhouse argues that the mythmaking that often attends our views of Athenian democracy—whether as a flawed, slaveholding regime that fostered factions and oppressed women or as an ideal regime of egalitarian and participatory democracy—blinds us to the deeper understanding of democracies that these ancient theorists can offer. Arlene W. Saxonhouse is the Caroline Robbins Collegiate Professor of Political Science, Emerita, at the University of Michigan. She is the author of numerous books and articles dealing with ancient Greek political thought, including Free Speech and Democracy in Ancient Athens and Fear of Diversity: The Birth of Political Science in Ancient Greek Thought. During the 1960s, theorists like Jeremiah Ostriker used early computers to determine that spiral galaxies would be unstable and "fly apart" without a massive spherical halo of unseen matter. This theoretical need found concrete evidence through the pioneering work of Vera Rubin and Kent Ford. By observing the Andromeda galaxy, they discovered that rotational velocities did not diminish at the outer edges, a phenomenon called "flattening the curve." This proved that a significant amount of invisible mass must exist to provide the necessary gravity. To map this mass, modern astronomers use gravitational lensing, an effect predicted by Einstein where gravity bends light from distant objects. This work continues in Chile at the Vera Rubin Observatory, which is designed to map the distribution of dark matter across space and time. (2/8)2020 ESA EUCLID

This episode was recorded before the tragic news of Dr. Habermas' death. We deeply mourn his passing. Dr Habermas was a man who carefully and passionately pursued the truth, and so we hope that today's episode, in that spirit, we'll pay a small tribute to his legacy. What happens to our democracy when the "written word" is replaced by the "viral image," and reasoned debate is drowned out by the hunt for clicks? University of Groningen professor Dr. Peter Verovšek joins host PJ Wehry to discuss the legacy of Jürgen Habermas and how the digital age is transforming the democratic public sphere. Dr. Verovšek explores the core arguments of his book, Jürgen Habermas: Public Intellectual and Engaged Critical Theorist. They examine the philosophical evolution of Habermas' work, from his early critiques of post-war Germany to his recent concerns regarding the "new" structural transformation of the public sphere caused by social media. In this conversation they explore:The "Desk" of the Intellectual: Why Habermas views the written word as the primary tool for public engagement and why he performs his role as an academic from the "primary place" of his desk. The First Generation vs. Habermas: How Habermas moved Critical Theory away from the "negativism" of Adorno and Horkheimer toward a consistent account where theory and practice flow from one another. The "Life World" vs. Systems: Why we must protect our day-to-day cultural lives—the "life world"—from being "colonized" by the impersonal logics of money and administrative power. Social Media as a "Double-Edged Sword": How the internet turned every citizen into a potential author while simultaneously removing the editors and fact-checkers essential for democratic legitimacy. The Intellectual vs. The Guru: Why true public intellectuals act as "early warning systems" for society rather than "gurus" who monetize their following or tell people how to live. The Crisis of Digital Authorship: Why the shift from reasoned argumentation to "appearance" and "mobilization" makes it increasingly difficult for marginalized voices to be heard in a saturated media environment. This is a conversation for anyone interested in political philosophy and media ethics who wants to understand the forces reshaping our democracy and how to reclaim a meaningful public square.Make sure to check out Dr. Verovšek's book: Jürgen Habermas: Public Intellectual and Engaged Critical Theorist

Coming off the emotional high of the Territorial Showdown at the McHale Center in Tucson, the Sun Devils hit a wall against one of the nation's elite. We react to Devin Booker's praise for the second unit and Jordan Ott's media session where he intentionally highlighted the reserves three separate times. Is the "Bench Mob" officially the Suns' greatest weapon?31:55 - Jalen Green Watch (The "Early Update" Theory): I break down my "Theorist" analysis of the Suns' rare 24-hour early health update for Jalen Green. America Can't Escape the Multipolar Order

The Foreign Affairs Interview

In the last decade, American foreign policymakers have been forced to reckon with a shifting global balance of power. Theorists have long argued over the shape of international order. But such questions now occupy practitioners, as well, as they grapple with the end of the unipolar moment that followed the Cold War and struggle to shape new strategies that account for new geopolitical realities. Emma Ashford is a leading proponent of a more restrained U.S. foreign policy. In an essay for Foreign Affairs, as well as in her new book First Among Equals, she argues that American policymakers must, above all, get comfortable with the fact of a multipolar world. “Instead of artificially cleaving the world in two,” she writes, “the United States should choose to embrace multipolarity and craft strategy accordingly.”  Ashford joined Dan Kurtz-Phelan on Monday, November 17, to discuss this new order, how the Biden and Trump administrations have dealt with these changes, and how the United States must adapt to thrive in a multipolar age. Eliot lifted lines from "The Musgrave Ritual" and appropriated them for Murder in the Cathedral, as well as found inspiration for Macavity in the Napoleon of crime.   In this "Mr. Sherlock Holmes the Theorist" episode, Don Hardenbrook, BSI ("Huret, the Boulevard Assassin") found a deeper meaning in Four Quartets, a collection of four interlinked poems by Eliot. One that echoes of The Hound of the Baskervilles. And it's just a Trifle.  If you have a question for us, please email us at trifles@ihearofsherlock.com. Our guest today is one of the most influential and provocative media theorists of our time. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in English and theater, earned a Master of Fine Arts in Directing at CalArts, and went on to teach media theory and digital economics at renowned institutions like NYU and Queens College. Over the past three decades, he's shaped the global conversation around technology, culture, and the future of society. He coined terms like “viral media,” “digital natives,” and “social currency.” His bestsellers, including Survival of the Richest, Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus, Program or Be Programmed, and Present Shock, are foundational texts for anyone questioning how technology shapes power, identity, and human agency. He's not only an academic and author, but also a cultural force. From making FRONTLINE documentaries for PBS like Merchants of Cool and Generation Like, to hosting the influential Team Human podcast, to advising global institutions, his message remains urgent: in a world being automated and optimized, we must double down on being human. He also is Co-Founder of Andus, an AI consultancy. Since launching this podcast over eight years ago, we've spoken to more than 600 people in over 500 episodes about how work can empower rather than diminish us and what still needs to change. How can we resist the seductive narratives of techno-solutionism and instead embrace a more human-centered, collective path forward? What do the survival fantasies of some of the world's wealthiest technologists reveal about our current system and how do we push back against that logic? And why is it more important than ever to reclaim agency not only over our tools, but over our values, our communities, and our shared future? One thing is clear: tackling today's challenges requires fresh perspectives. That's why we continue to search for ideas, people, methods, tools, and stories that bring us closer to the core of New Work. And of course, we always come back to the same question: can everyone really find and live what they really, really want? You're listening to On the Way to New Work, today with Douglas Rushkoff. Jay Finley Christ wrote a piece in 1949 that wasn't widely published until 1975 (if one can call the audience of Baker Street Miscellanea wide).
